The GOP’s Newest Star: Far Crazier Than Rand Paul

Politics • Views: 3,894

Rand Paul’s getting all the media attention for his ludicrous comments about the Civil Rights Act and the BP oil spill, but he is actually far from the most extreme Republican nominated last week.

Meet Arthur Robinson, who won the GOP nomination for Oregon’s 4th Congressional District.

Mr. Robinson is so full of bad craziness he makes Rand Paul look sane, a prodigious feat. Robinson is a climate change denier (he’s the huckster who concocted the “Oregon Petition Project”), a survivalist, a young earth creationist, a theocrat, and of course, a home schooler.

And when I say “home schooling,” I mean complete cultural separatism.

Home schooling is no more than a tool that can be used to keep a child out of the World.

If a young person is kept out of the World, the Lord will raise him (or her). Little else is necessary. The links to the Lord are already built into the child. He will follow those links and will directly help the child. All children receive this help. Parents really need do very little in addition.

He’s the perfect candidate for what the GOP has mutated into — the party of throwbacks and reactionaries.

Sure, I think home schooling could work. My advice for anyone considering this would be not to look at Robinson for guidance.

At least Robinson is honest enough to declare his distaste for the Enlightenment openly. This is really the crucial divide between traditional Goldwater/Buckley conservatives and the current crop of would-be theocrats. There are many other differences, of course, but all of them flow from this fundamental historical position.
This is probably why the theocrats are so eager to re-write American history and portray the Constitution as rooted in their superstition rather than in Enlightenment philosophy.

It's a separatist type of Christianity, one that emphasizes separation from "worldly corruption" to avoid the faithful being tainted. The Amish practice a form of this, but unlike them Robinson is not a pacifist.

AS always here is my FYI homeschooling post.

Homeschoolers are lots of different types of families.
Tons of people do it, not just evangelical nutjobs.
School is not the best environment for all children especially if yours is not "normal", but learns in odd ways or is a tad eccentric.
Homeschooling done right opens the whole world up to a kid and allows them to be among children and adults of all ages not just a room full of 10/11 year old kids.
blahblahblah......

"Separatist" .... I didn't even have the time (or characters in the entry... hey, who would have thought 16000 characters wouldn't be sufficient to describe the looniness of where these people are going?) to do that justice.

From his Self-Motivation for the Study of Science

Remember also, that the World affects all of the people living in it. Just because an activity is Christian does not mean it is safe. Often Christians are especially vulnerable to Christian activities because their guard is down. The label indicates that the activity is safe.

When our family goes to church, everyone sits together in the main service. This has always been the case - even when the children were small infants. Sunday schools and children's churches are public schools, too.

The Lord is in the child's heart. Do not let anything, regardless of its label - come between the child and the Lord.

The dude's a control freak. He's scared his children might be contaminated even in the same church he attends.

Nor did I have time to delve into the rest of his family, including his current wife (he was widowed) and her writings on food.

71 lostlakehiker  Sun, May 23, 2010 11:53:39am

Throwbacks, eh?

During the interval between the acceptance of evolution and the rise of modern understanding of genetics, atavism was used to account for the reappearance in an individual of a trait after several generations of absence. Such an individual was sometimes called a "throwback". The term is often used in connection with the unexpected reappearance of primitive traits in organisms.

The notion of atavism was used frequently by social Darwinists, who claimed that inferior races displayed atavistic traits, and represented more primitive traits than their own race. Both the notion of atavism, and Haeckel's recapitulation theory, are saturated with notions of evolution as progress, as a march towards greater complexity and superior ability.

In addition, the concept of atavism as part of an individualistic explanation of the causes of criminal deviance was popularised by the Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso in the 1870s. He attempted to identify physical characteristics common to criminals and labeled those he found as atavistic, 'throwback' traits that determined 'primitive' criminal behavior. His statistical evidence and the notion that physical traits determine inevitable criminality (an idea closely related to the concepts of eugenics) have long since been debunked, but the concept that physical traits may affect the likelihood of criminal behavior in the individual remains popular in some circles.[citation needed]

Putting together the content of the post, and the meaning of the word 'throwback', I am then to conclude that the GOP has mutated into the party of genetically inferior people who display atavistic, 'throwback' traits that determine primitive criminal behavior?

This is not to stick up for Mr. Arthur Robinson. He's a Luddite. He's a religious fanatic. He isn't even an honest fanatic; his Oregon Institute or whatever he likes to call it doesn't make an honest case against evolution, and it isn't actually an Institute in the same sense as the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton. His take on "the World" is straight out of the Amish book. Us "english" are so worldly, I guess. The people who voted him the GOP nomination ought not have. They're reactionaries, for sure.

But it's wiser to steer clear of words that are eugenically charged and loaded with all sorts of baggage.

Sure looks like a lock-His page

District Demographics
U.S. Census data put Representative DeFazio's record in the context of the people who he represents. Oregon District 4 is 69.17 percent urban, 5.41 percent non-white, and has a population that is 4.23 percent Latino and 4.19 percent foreign-born. 7.66 percent of adults working in Rep. DeFazio's district commute using public transportation, on a bike or on foot. 8.27 percent of adults aged 25 and older in DeFazio's district have a Master's, PhD or Professional Degree.

DeFazio is Oregon's senior member of congress and he's had the seat since the Reagan administration. :D

Oh, please. Here's the definition of "throwback:"

a person or thing having the characteristics of a former time : a lot of his work is a throwback to the fifties.

Trying to imply that my use of the term is somehow tied to "eugenics" is ridiculous.

re: #46 palomino

In the 2008 election there was a huge turnout (thanks to candidate Obama.)

In that year there were no Republicans in the primary, and thus the GOP candidate on the general election was a nobody.

In the last mid-term election, though, in 2006, the results were closer. Still, the (D) got 71000 more votes than the (R).

I find it hard to believe that Robinson will win. Yet he seems to be overwhelmingly popular with the Republicans in that area. It will be interesting in the general election to see if Robinson improves on the (R) share compared to 2006.

It's red, but there's no population!

That brings up one of my favorite analyses of recent presidential elections, repeated by numerous pundits. In trying to maximize GOP victories (or minimize their losses), it's often said that the Republicans won 80% of the territory of the US. Of course this means nothing since without people, it's just space on a map. Much of the red territory is dominated by cows and dirt, neither of which have been granted the franchise.

Oregon has an interesting dichotomy. I'm actually not surprised at all that a total wacko could become the nominee in that district, because we have a lot of crazy kooks! Oregon seems to create kooks. And the Rs seem to have left a vaccuum for their nominee if they didn't run anyone in 2008. So any maniac could just have it.

Really is. Like Ms. Kagan, I am a bit curvy in the figure, and that leg-crossing business is not entirely comfortable. I either sit as she does in that photo, or cross my ankles, or, if I am wearing pants, angle one ankle across my knee, in a masculine style.

I really would not want anyone to judge my sexuality or my suitability for the Supreme Court from this. I just have shtarke pulkes.

SanFranZ, if you're ever considered for any branch of government, you can count on my unwavering support.

If you call him a goat-fucking child molester you should land a gig at CNN.

Hey, it worked for Erick Erickson.

I think it has to be a moderate for that to work for you.

But we can experiment--or NOT.

(I have this wacky thing about the dignity of the SCOTUS.)

This is how a lady politician should look.

I approve.

If I were a politician, I think I would go for the Clare McCaskill look. Everything she wears appears to have been bought in a big sale at the Kansas City Macy's.

I do like the way Palin dresses, also Pelosi.

Enterprise was well written and caught alot more of the original flavor.

She was GREAT in that movie! And she also apparently helped out with the production, brought in her own wardrobe for the production to use.

It softened my opinion of her a lot.

I had a kid in my class like that once. Total wheeler-dealer, had a little import business going in the tenth grade.

He kept trying to sell me stuff. The best episode was when he started looking into making arrangements for Russian brides coming to the U.S., and wanted me to be his first customer.

"Kyle, I'm married."

"So? I can get you a great deal."

"Also, I can't marry a woman legally in California."

"That's gonna change by the time we get the paperwork done. I can feel it."

"Even if I could marry a woman legally, I couldn't marry a woman legally, because I'm already married. To my husband."

"Whatever. Divorce him! This Russian bride will be much hotter."

"I only have a two-bedroom apartment, and one of the bedrooms is full of my husband's computer stuff. Where is this lady going to sleep?"

"That's not my problem, Mrs. SFZ."
