GOP Candidate Arthur Robinson: Dump Oil and Nuclear Waste at Sea

Wingnuts • Views: 4,110

Here’s more data on the extreme views of Arthur Robinson, the GOP mutant candidate for Oregon’s 4th Congressional District, who says we really ought to Dump Oil and Nuclear Waste at Sea.

The oceans are starved for it.

“Wastes dumped into the deep ocean will soon reach the bottom, where they are less hazardous than nearly any other place on Earth. Most materials will remain there: marine organisms are rare in the deep ocean, food chains are long, and few materials will be carried back to mankind. And that is what waste disposal is all about…

…The oil companies’ reckless greed, we are told, has devastated the oceans with their oil spills.

Baloney.”

[…]

“As for oil spills in the open and deep ocean, they amount to far less than natural seeps and river runoff, and any unbiased oceanographer will confirm that they are a boon to marine life, inflicting damage mainly on the oil and shipping companies. For crude oil is a natural, organic, biodegradable product of the earth’s ancient plant and animal life, and it is this type of hydrocarbon that marine life in the open and deep ocean is starved for.”

Lots of CO2 is good for plants!

But seriously folks, anyone who wants to dump nuclear waste at sea hasn’t watched enough Godzilla movies, that or lives nowhere close to the coast….

Teh stupid. It burns!

Yes, throw all your garbage in the ocean. I mean, it not as though a continent the size of Texas, made entirely out of garbage, will form in the middle of the huge ocean.

Oh wait. It’s twice the size of Texas.

A local tabloid once did some reporting on back when the Navy was dumping stuff in big tins marked WARNING: RADIATION off the coast of California.

One old gentleman explained that he’d taken out a number of loads of this stuff. You were supposed to wait until it sank, but he allowed that when a barrel didn’t seem to be going down fast enough, they’d shoot some holes in it to get it to take on water.

Encasing nuclear waste first, then putting it in the remotest part of the surface of the Earth, is probably as good an idea as we can come up with to do with the stuff (assuming you don’t want to recycle it through other type of nuclear reactors.)

Yet it’s Robinson’s totally blind faith in the dispensable nature of the environment that is on display here.

Robinsion is one of the original anti-environmentalists. His approach is rooted in his religion. He was creating talking points against AGW, which are still used today by the deniers, before Al Gore got on the issue and started to publicize AGW widely.

In other words, a great deal of the stances people like Palin take on these issues were worked out by Robinson in the 70’s. Robinson and one of his co-authors, Gary North, both disciples of Rushdoony, and their friends were creating the basic talking points decades ago, when Palin was in grade school and Limbaugh was just a horny young man trying to figure out what to do for a career.

On this topic, I have thought that it might actually be a solution to the nuclear waste problem, to vitrify the stuff, and put it at the bottom of deep shafts drilled in a subduction zone, because you would be mailing it to the center of the earth, more or less.

If you chose your location on the subduction zone carefully, avoiding places like the Cascades, where the dropping plate makes some volcanoes and burps some of the subduction material back up relatively soon, the vitrified waste might stay down for a long time.

Does any lizard have a geology answer on how long a complete loop back tot he surface might take from a relatively quiet place on a subduction line?

If the time is significantly longer than the longest half lives of the stuff you are trying to get rid of, this burial method might work.

The GOP tapped into the mother load of looney when they picked Robinson to bear their banner.

Robinson doesn’t stand a chance. So he gets to be a loose cannon since he doesn’t have to worry about losing. The incumbent, DeFazio, won with 80% of the ballots in 2008 and the Reps didn’t even run an opponent. Pretty much anything Robinson says is flame bait for the press. The Dems should still shove Robinson down the Reps throats.

The GOP tapped into the mother load of looney when they picked Robinson to bear their banner.

re: #98 LudwigVanQuixote

Question to Austin and Bagua…

The last thread had the start of a discussion about how to shut down the oil flow from the BP disaster.

Could the two of you please elaborate on what was being discussed earlier.

My basic question is, what is there that is available to plug the hole. Why did we not just try to plug it in the first place. How would we go about doing so?

From what I understand, the BOP did close, however there was a tiny leak which eroded into a larger leak. This is why there was no leak initially, and the leak appears to have grown.

Thus the follow on attempts to activate the BOPs where ineffective, also, at least half of them would have failed anyway and some of them were destroyed during the initial blow out.

The other question is the effect the kink in the riser is having, it may be slowing down the leak, but also eroding. Should one be capped, the leak will get greater closer to the BOP as the pressure and flow would increase.

This is also why they are not trying to inject mud through the capped drill pipe that was leaking, despite the valve put on it. They could cause a much greater leak, 5x or more larger.

I am not all together thrilled about the idea of the “junk shot” it sounds porous at best.

The junk shot is the second top kill choice, first they will try to pump mud into the well through the choke and kill lines.

What could practically be done to close the damn thing quickly?

I believe that is the central problem. Nothing can be done quickly, because nothing was ready. The BOPs are unfit for purpose. They are trying things that are unproven at this depth. They are ready to drill at this depth but they are not ready to deal with a blow out at this depth.

BTW I don’t think we could use a nuke because of the depth this is at. I can’t see a crush proof submersible device that would fit the opening being possible to manufacture.

The relief well will be active long before anything like this could be invented and produced.

Alternatively, if Austin_Blue is correct then the BOP is doing nothing, and everything else is futile. In which case there is no downside to trying a Red Adair with another stack of BOPs as the relief well is the first, real option. (Please correct me if I’m wrong.)

I didn’t realize this was the Robinson of the Robinson method.

The Robinson method works great if your children have really smart parents and don’t have ADD. I have a friend for whom it works. It wouldn’t work for me—too little ability to sit still.

All Homeschoolers recognize that TV and junk food are not good for your kids in large amounts. How much each family allows their children varies.

I suck at restricting sugar, but I do mostly cook dinner from scratch. (I will confess to freezer lasagna.) We only eat fast food on vacation when we don’t have access to a kitchen.

We don’t own a TV, but they do watch stuff on the computer, and not just educational. (Unless Loony Tunes and Doctor Who somehow became educational. I still hold out Mythbusters as educational.)

There’s probably worse in most sausages :D

Actually the single most unkosher food is a banger or a blood sausage.

The traditional way to make one is:

Collect a bucket of pig blood.

Let it clot.

Collect the clots with flour and spices and stuff into a pig intestine.

Fry and serve frequently with dairy.

Now this may taste so good it it akin to the pleasure of experiencing the pure love of a virtuous woman. I am never going to find out. Even if it were kosher, my queasiness goes through the roof on this one.

If there is any food more unkosher, I simply don’t want to think about it. For those who don’t know, the blood taboo is the largest of the offenses.

No, that’s my point. They need to remove cut the riser over and remove the existing stack as much as they can, leaving the base and whatever components above it to keep it anchored, and lower two shear rams over it, screw them down, and squeeze off the release.

But that is the obvious fix. I must assume that BP (which wants to stop this disaster more than anyone) has determined that cutting away the riser from the BOP stack would be worse than not doing so.

Here’s what I can confidently tell you. The top kill and the junk shot won’t work. The downhole pressure ( +/- 13,000 psi) and the top down pressure capacity against it (3,000 psi) make it physically impossible. They will be pissing into the wind.

I deboned a whole leg of lamb which I marinated in olive oil, rosemary, and garlic over night, and then trimmed the fat off a 10lb sirloin and cut it into three threeish pound roasts…salted and soyed and peppered and sugared and let sit for a few hours. These (and some Hebrew National franks my wife brought from the ball park) all went on the BBQ…another friend, who runs a wine import/distributorship, provided the liquid love…other hits were a salad from the owners of Bi-Rite grocery (they also stocked the fridge for the returning family so they wouldn’t have to go shopping this week), and a thai pasta salad which I have to say, was my choice when dessert came out (cheesecakes, muffins tortes, etc.)

Rand Paul and the Kooky Fox News Judge

Rand Paul, the Republican candidate for the Senate in Kentucky, says he backed out of Sunday’s “Meet the Press” appearance because he was fearful of liberal media attacks. But avoiding the media won’t stop the questions about the candidate’s controversial views and associations. These include 9/11 conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Fox News judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano, who was recently on Fox News claiming that Arizona’s new immigration law has made it into a Nazi state.

Going beyond anything the far-left “progressives” have said about it, Napolitano claimed the Arizona immigration law, which was crafted with an eye to constitutional challenges, would bankrupt the state because of the costs of enforcing it. He then went on the Alex Jones show to repeat these and other wild criticisms of the measure. Ironically, these comments were judged too extreme even for Alex Jones, a 9/11 truther who raised money for Rand Paul and appears regularly on the Kremlin-financed Russia Today television channel.

Napolitano promoted Rand Paul’s campaign for the Senate on several occasions on his own Freedom Watch program on Foxnews.com and when he hosted the Glenn Beck program on Fox News Channel.

In 1976, Robinson’s newsletter (ATE) published this rebuttal of the “greenhouse theory”:

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

I’ll let Ludwig do the detail exposition of his errors, but the point I want to make is that here is Robinson, in 1976, before Hansen or Gore started to publicize AGW, creating the very talking points one still finds today in the comments at HotWingNuts, TownHall, etc:

From the link:

It is true that the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere has slightly increased in the last 100 years; but the evidence that this is due to human activity is, at best, very flimsy. (As usual, man’s activities are puny compared to the gigantic CO production be Mother Nature.)

and

The greenhouse effect is also genuine, as call be demonstrated with a piece of glass and a spectrometer. But it hardly affects the temperature of a greenhouse, which gets its warmth almost exclusively by the lack of ventilation - as proved in l909 by physicist R.W Wood, who covered one greenhouse with glass and another with rocksalt. which is transparent to all colors, including infrared.

and

The earth’s (cloudless) atmosphere is largely opaque to infrared already, trapping some of the earth’s heat radiation, and what effect an increased concentration of carbon dioxide might have on a circulating atmosphere, nobody knows for certain. But such an effect, if any, would be superimposed on the large climatic changes that take place over decades and centuries (unknown why) anyway, and the suspicion is that the corresponding (additional) greenhouse effect would have the same effect as on a greenhouse next to none.

That last one is in particular an especially strong FAIL.

Anyway, one again, the point is that 34 years ago Robinson (along with a few others) were already putting into motion the talking points used by the right-o-sphere today.

No, that’s my point. They need to cut the riser over the existing stack as much as they can, leaving the base and whatever components above it to keep it anchored, and remove the existing stack. Then they need to lower two shear rams over it, screw them down, and squeeze off the release.

PIMF.

Sheesh, it’s late.

He doesn’t need to. I’ve sent a full squadron of I-9 Howlrunners after you. Unlike older TIE Fighters, these have shields, but they’re slightly faster. They’ll cripple your ship in not time flat. Then I’ll send the Interrogation Droids aboard. And when they get done, you’ll wish you’d just been waterboarded.

That last one is in particular an especially strong FAIL.

Anyway, one again, the point is that 34 years ago Robinson (along with a few others) were already putting into motion the talking points used by the right-o-sphere today.

OK I get it now… this is a sinister plot to kill me from banging my head into my desk… First the topic of this thread, then the creepy robots and Japanese cyber molestation, now this.

Now, now, a proper haggis contains the heart, liver, and lungs of a sheep with oats and salt and pepper. It’s boiled in the sheep’s stomach. Done well, it’s edible. Topped with a whiskey cream sauce, it can be quite good.

Been there, done that, paid in Scottish Pounds.

Movie star Uma Thurman introduced McGruder, who thanked her for being “the most ass-kicking woman in America,” then broke out the other “N” word. He told the crowd of mostly aging white liberals that he had voted for Ralph Nader in 2000. Nation columnist Eric Alterman shouted “Thanks for Bush!” and in Jack Newfield’s account, McGruder dared Alterman to knock him off the podium. The illustrator grabbed his crotch and said, “Try these nuts.”

I like gefilte fish. Granted, the pulverized fish sort of looks like bread rolls on a platter but it’s tasty. Especially with some homemade chutney. I went to 2 Passover dinners this year, each at different households. One had the gefilte fish “straight up” and the other had the chutney. It might have been just a sorta salty hot sauce. Anyway, here’s another vote for the gefilte fish.

Hey everyone…just got home from a little party we threw for some friends who were flying home today from Ethiopia with their new daughter (she’s beautiful, by the way…).

It really was a lovely afternoon. You can’t beat quality time with good friends.

Upding for mouth-watering menu (despite lack of chocolate chip cookies) and am thinking I’d like to be invited to your next party.

By the way, you two…I saw Cabaret in Reno/Sparks over the weekend…I had no idea it was about the fall of Germany before WWII…as great as the songs are, the story is very dark.

Very true. But it’s a very important story. Especially now with some the loons we have on the march right now. We live in dangerous times. Thankfully, Obama is not alienated from his brain trust as Hindenburg was alienated from Ludendorff. Not that Ludendorff would have been too much help, since his societal ideas dovetailed with the Nazis in many ways.

Gulf Oil Spill update:

They will no longer try the junk shot next should the top kill with mud fail. Instead, they plan to cut off the riser from the lower marine riser package (LMRP) and attach another dome to capture the oil and gas leaking out. This because the junk shot could cut off other control options (such as the choke and kill lines)

Should this fail, next comes the option Austin_Blue was talking about, “hot stabbing” another BOP on top of the malfunctioning one, or a valve, and then trying to close off the leak ala Red Adair.

This because they believe the well is not free flowing, rather it is constrained by debris and also because of the type blowout.

Today BP announced the flow is not traveling up the main well bore. They believe the mostly likely flow path is between two casing strings. In addition, some obstructions such as cement and rocks are restricting the flow rate. This is based on low pressure readings on the lower part of the BOP stack.

This would indicate why they believe the top kill with mud could work. The pressure is below a free flow.

Germans freakin’ love Blood-based dishes.

German food gets a somewhat unfair bad rap. Some German food is actually great—schnitzel, strudel, potato pancakes.

But then some is truly repulsive—limburger cheese, blood sausage, and I would include sauerkraut. Ewwwww.

re: #240 austin_blue

…the junk shot won’t work. The downhole pressure ( +/- 13,000 psi) and the top down pressure capacity against it (3,000 psi) make it physically impossible.

I would visualize it as using a t-shirt cannon to shoot a pillows worth of feathers into the exhaust end of a wind tunnel.

East Coast here, tired too so bear with me..

I think they should cut it off as close as they can, insert a 20-50m rod about half the inner diameter size, weighted on top with a “x” ton cap weight. The rod would have divots staggered around the entire circumference and length containing an expanding ballistic rubberized material (ie: balloons). The internal portion of the rod would be hollow so that the ballistic material can be inflated using a quick expanding and hardening foam. The entire inflating mechanism would be self contained inside the concrete weight.

Slide rod into stack, until fully inserted, with weight secured over the top of the entire exposed stack. Pull the pin, hope the thing inflates, in a way like flower petals, expanding and overlapping in a matter of milliseconds.

I don’t know, my idea sounds about as good as anything else I’ve heard BP come up with.

I wonder how they define “girl” over there?

IN this case, a very attractive 26 year old brunette woman, with advanced degrees and great charm. She also has long, full shoulder length hair, the most astonishing blue green eyes and amazing figure.

In other words, the sort of girl you would never have a chance with.

She would laugh at you actually. It would be a polite behind her hand laugh because she would not want to embarrass you too much, but you are the sort who would quickly make her eyes narrow. Then she would spend some time detailing exactly why you are a loser.

Exactly. There’s an Obama Derangement Syndrome from the left, where Obama was saying one thing, and the far left was hearing five more unbelievably optimistic things that he never said.

As for me, I got EXACTLY the President I expected in Obama. A moderate Democrat who isn’t going to revolutionize anything, but who’s doing a good job in the midst of shitstorm after shitstorm.

Agree completely. He’s neither what the paranoid delusional far right says he is, nor what much of the far left imagined he would be.

Anyone who paid attention during that long campaign shouldn’t really be surprised by how he’s handled things. Not radical at all, but a cautious centrist.

Why? Tectonics won’t affect that kind of coffin. The concept is that the coffins will be subducted with other ocean sediments and recycled into the upper mantle, where the radioactive elements in place in the first place

Not really. Anything you just dump into a trench at a subduction boundary will end up being scrapped off into the sedimentary melange as the heavier oceanic basaltic plate is dragged under. It will likely be deeply buried but it is very unlikely that it will actually end up going for the long plunge into the mantle.

Tectonic melanges are interesting geologic assemblages and are typified by high pressure/low temp metamorphism (blue schist-glaocophane).

So physically, what keeps the deep well open then? Why does it not collapse during drilling? I get the idea of pressure from the column of mud, however, why does the pipe not collapse under that pressure if you were to stanch the flow? I have this picture that if you could just shut off the flow deeply enough with perhaps an explosive the whole thing would crush.

Why am I wrong?

You are not going to find much in the way of oil fields on an active tectonic boundary like what I descibed (possibly in the fore arc basin? I don’t know.)
What we have in the Gulf is a passive sedimentary prism (or what used to be called a geosyncline) that has oppotunity for hydrocarbons to “cook” and migrate over time from shales into nearby resevoir sandstones and accumulate into usable and commercially viable pools or ‘fields’. The area of the gulf we are dealing with is only structurally active in terms of normal dip/slip faulting from soft sediment deformation and salt dome formation. (Pretty neat, btw…)

Chaos attacking and Dark Angels/Imperial Guard defending. I had three bastions. My friend finally could claim two of them and I had nothing left to get rid of his last squad of terminators (he started with 5 squads, I think. Sheesh!)

Are perhaps blowing the affects of the BP spill out of proportion?

Gulf recovered from last big oil spill, but is this one different?

As the studies extended into a second year, scientists noticed how fast the marine environment recovered, helped by naturally occurring microbes that feasted on the oil and degraded it.

Perhaps due to those microbes, Tunnell found that aquatic life along the shoreline in Texas had returned to normal within three years — even as tar balls and tar mats remained along the beaches, sometimes covered by sand.

The Oklahomans apparently are upset at the President for not being one of them:

Obama’s snub of state must not go unchallenged

Obama has shown a lack of presidential tact any number of times since moving into the White House 16 months ago, whether it’s been bowing before foreign dignitaries, dissing our allies (in particular Israel), or talking mostly about himself while trying to lure the Olympic Games to Chicago. This latest move is par for the course, and it’s one Republicans and especially Democrats in Oklahoma need to contest with all their might.

[…]

Maybe Obama is just thumbing his nose at our state, which did the same to him in November 2008 when Obama failed to carry a single county. You’d hate to think the president of the United States would be so petty, but who knows?

So, can we conclude that the Oklahomans want Obama to bow to them?

Hitting the marshes in Louisiana will be very different from texas beaches. It’ll literally choke the mangroves out, to start. They trap the oil in a much nastier way.

re: #235 freetoken

[Robinson said] The earth’s (cloudless) atmosphere is largely opaque to infrared already, trapping some of the earth’s heat radiation, and what effect an increased concentration of carbon dioxide might have on a circulating atmosphere, nobody knows for certain

Breathtakingly wrong. So what if IR can’t get through this or that fraction of the atmosphere without getting intercepted by a CO2 molecule? That molecule will reradiate the energy shortly, and the energy bounces around in the system. Some of it eventually reaches sufficiently high altitudes that the remaining CO2 above it is unlikely to intercept it, and half of that makes its way out into space.

This process, however clogged it may be, will be driven by a temperature at the surface that is sufficient to reradiate the daily intake of energy from the sun.

Put in more CO2, making the atmosphere a better blanket, and the surface temperature will rise just enough that the same amount of energy as always makes its way through the blanket and out into space.

Venus has an impressive atmosphere. If not for the greenhouse properties of that atmosphere, the surface temperature would be nothing special. [see Wikipedia for details] As it is, with an atmosphere about 100 times as massive as the earth’s, made mostly of CO2, (so, a concentration 3000 times as great), Venus has 300 thousand times the atmospheric CO2 of earth. Does it make a difference? After all, if earth’s atmosphere has so much CO2 that more would hardly matter, then a million times more wouldn’t matter either.

But it does. Temperatures on Venus are about 860 degrees Fahrenheit.

Robinson’s using the rhetorical tactic of qualifying his statement to make it literally true, while completely misleading. “Nobody knows for certain”. Nobody knows for exact certain just how many degrees, to the tenth decimal, a change of thus and so in CO2 would cause. But that’s not the point. Those who know anything at all, and they are numerous, all know that it will make a certain ballpark amount of difference.

Apparently some oil seeps into the ocean from the sea floor all the time anyway. Is it in any way comparable to this spill? No idea. But if there is a steady, but modest amount that leaks, there must be organisms that dig the stuff. Though, what happens when you first treat the oil with toxic dispersants? Guess we’ll find out.

re: #83 Ojoe

The long half-life stuff isn’t really the problem — by definition, the stuff with long half-lives decays slowly and emits low-level radiation that blends into the background. The really dangerous stuff has half-lives of (at most) a few centuries, so it’d be long gone before it re-emerged if properly dumped into a subduction zone.

Of course, “properly dumped” is the issue: it would need to be encased well enough to remain contained until it was drawn into the lower crust, not just dumped willy-nilly like this moonbat Robertson is suggesting.
