Isn't that what BP tried to tell us over the past few days?

I love this band. They've had some great songs over the years, with "I Won't Back Down" being an all-time favorite of mine.

NEWSCORE - A BP executive on Saturday said the company’s “top kill” attempt to plug the leak caused by the explosion of its Deepwater Horizon rig, the worst oil spill in U.S. history, was not successful and it is now considering other methods to plug the leak, the Times-Picayune reported.

BP said it's not working and they're considering other options. They're still running Top Kill however. That's just my opinion -- that it failed. If it was going to work the "graph" would have been swinging upwards and instead it's going the other way around.
Let me find a news article.

BP's latest efforts haven't stopped flow of oil
By Vicki Needham - 05/29/10 03:41 PM ET
The flow of oil hasn't been stopped by British Petroleum's latest attempt to plug the gushing well.
The "top kill" operation doesn't appear to be working yet and BP is planning its next move, chief operating officer Doug Suttles said Saturday...

I just saw it, CNN and then look above your last comment.
Well - the chance of it working was small, anyway.
I wonder if any of that activity we saw going on with the ROV's using the saw, etc., has to do with the future plans they're considering?

I didn't see that. I assume the next attempt will be a junk shot.
After that it looks like August for the relief wells to be completed.

The junk shots already have been tried and failed. The next option is to cut the riser off at the top of the LMRP.

For plugging the well, definitely. But the next step has a good chance in siphoning off significantly more than the Riser Insertion Tube.
And yes, we discussed several times the erosive nature of the heavy mud under increased pressure and the likely hood it would make the channels through the BOP larger. But let's wait for BP to release some pressure readings to confirm this. Prior to the mud pump, it was 400 psi over ambient above the stack, and 8-9,000 below.

/sorry to be doom-and-gloomy.
I know. But the equipment and details can be very different 30 years later and in a different well. The key factor, which is unknown, is what sort of blow-out this is? If it is a back-side blow out starting at the 9 7/8" casing at 17,168 feet, it has a clear shot up the riser to the rig in this well design.
This well design left an open annulus at that casing. Why no liner hanger at that level? Halliburton and BP will need to explain this detail.

The whole mud pump top kill attempt was the largest, literal, stock market Pump and Dump in history. All the companies involved, BP, Cameron, Transocean, Halliburton, saw about a 3% dead cat bounce on the first day when they didn't update us until the closing bell. This bounce, interrupted the 20% of so decline, and gave the them a chance to dump their stock at a more favourable price.
Pump and Dump. Pump mud and Dump stock. Brilliant, but criminal.

This is an LGF exclusive on the Bagua page.
Red Jacket Guy
While filming the leaking BOP during the Top Kill procedure and Junk Shot is messy business with all that nasty oil and mud spewing out. The underwater Spill Cam robot slowly surfaces to have its lens wiped.
First is a clip of the baby leaks above the BOP, then short time-lapse clips of the rise through a mile a sea water to the surface. There we see at least one drill ship and other vessels. As the robot is docked in its hanger, into internet fame Red Jack Guy walks past the camera.

The person who said that should be arrested, flown down to Galveston, dragged into a local bar and the tape of his remarks should be played. After which, the US Marshals who brought him in should inform the patrons they'll be back in ten minutes and won't investigate anything that happens in the meantime. Then the locals get to show him what they think of his callous little remark.

If you can hold off until June 16 you may be able to get fresh dungeness crab here in SE Alaska. Or you could catch your own with a fishing license and charter a boat.
I look forward to Sept. when my bil goes to fish in Alaska. I always get a care package of salmon, halibut and his wonderful smoked salmon.

'Top kill' fails to stop flow of oil, BP says
Venice, Louisiana (CNN) -- BP's "top kill" attempt to stop the flow of oil from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico failed, the company's chief operating officer said Saturday. The oil giant has tried for days to stop the the largest oil spill in U.S. history by pumping heavy, mudlike drilling fluid into a ruptured oil well, a method known as "top kill."
The next option is to place a custom-built cap known as the "lower marine riser package" over the leak, the company's chief operating officer, Doug Suttles said. BP crews were working Saturday to ready the materials for that option should it become necessary, he said.
"We've been prepping that all along in case we need to move to that option," he said. "People want to know which technique is going to work, and I don't know."
And if "lower marine riser package" were to fail, he said, BP engineers would try placing a second blowout preventer on top of the first, which failed to cut of the oil flow after the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig. The failed blowout preventer is a 48-foot-tall, 450-ton apparatus that sits atop the well 5,000 feet underwater.

When I was a boy-kid, Christmas time meant tamale time. Mom and the sisters did it the old fashioned way - grinder on the side of the counter, corn husks by the billions. Big tamale cooker pot, kept busy all day. We'd have a tamale eating contest at supper. I don't know what tradition that is, but it was our tradition.

Yep...a 5lb bag of it...going to start with about 2 cups and see how far that takes me, then make more if I need it. Got three bags of corn husks to work with and some pepper jack cheese to add to some of the tamales.
Be sure to shake out the corn husks. Sometimes they have little dried up bugs in them.

Around here all the restaurants sell tamales by the dozens at Christmastime. For those less enterprising than your Mom and darthstar.

I'll be by at 5pm with the beer and some drilling videos. Gripping stuff.
Sucks about the Top Kill/Junk Shot combo...but it didn't work in 160 feet of water in 1979, so they were pretty sure it wouldn't work today. Let's hope the new smaller Top Hat method is able to funnel most of the oil up to waiting tankers and they can reduce the amount of oil blowing into the gulf by a significant factor.

Necessity is the mother of enterprising, to bastardize an expression. Beans, cornbread, tamales - all of these things can be made for next to nothing. That comes in handy when you have next to nothing. That, and the process brings everyone together.

BP issues Press Release
"BP started the "top kill" operations to stop the flow of oil from the MC252 well in the Gulf of Mexico at 1300 CDT on May 26, 2010.
The procedure was intended to stem the flow of oil and gas and ultimately kill the well by injecting heavy drilling fluids through the blow-out preventer on the seabed, down into the well.
Despite successfully pumping a total of over 30,000 barrels of heavy mud, in three attempts at rates of up to 80 barrels a minute, and deploying a wide range of different bridging materials, the operation did not overcome the flow from the well.
The Government, together with BP, have therefore decided to move to the next step in the subsea operations, the deployment of the Lower Marine Riser Package (LMRP) Cap Containment System.
The operational plan first involves cutting and then removing the damaged riser from the top of the failed Blow-Out Preventer (BOP) to leave a cleanly-cut pipe at the top of the BOP’s LMRP. The cap is designed to be connected to a riser from the Discoverer Enterprise drillship and placed over the LMRP with the intention of capturing most of the oil and gas flowing from the well. The LMRP cap is already on site and it is currently anticipated that it will be connected in about four days.
This operation has not been previously carried out in 5,000 feet of water and the successful deployment of the containment system cannot be assured.
Drilling of the first relief well continues and is currently at 12,090 feet. Drilling of the second relief well is temporarily suspended and is expected to recommence shortly from 8,576 feet."

O.M.G.
How very strange!
We had a neighbor who did the same thing, walked around the neighborhood digging up plants, even saw him down by the shopping mall digging up their landscaping.
The guy was not mentally right. Does this guy have a family living with him? You might try to let them know, that behavior is so odd, there could be something wrong with him.
If that doesn't work, of course, you can always get some leaves from a yucca plant, and stick 'em in the ground around your plants, as an incentive for the guy to STOP taking your plants.

Canada Grills BP on Arctic plans
Knock on effects hit BP.
In 2008, BP paid C$1.2 billion ($1.8 billion) for rights to explore three parcels in Canada's Beaufort Sea, north of the Arctic Circle.
It has yet to announce plans to drill in the region but shortly before the US disaster, BP and other oil companies urged Canadian regulators to drop a requirement stipulating that companies operating in the Arctic had to drill relief wells in the same season as the primary well.
Cullen argued the companies had made this request because drilling a relief well within the required time limit would be too expensive, given the difficult Arctic conditions.
"It's not a question of cost," said Drinkwater.
"Your submission does say it's a question of cost. ... You cite money because you're concerned about money," retorted Cullen, reading from a BP document filed with the NEB, then listing recent disasters BP had been involved in.
Drinkwater - who said BP was not rejecting the option of a relief well - declined to answer reporters' questions following the hearing.

So if 80 barrels a minute wasn't enough downward pressure, that would mean the gusher is capable of greater upward pressure than that. And at 80 bpm, 30k barrels of mud would only last 6 hours or so.
It would be hard to get enough downward pressure, I would think, while it was leaking out at the same time.

How come the only ones telling us the navy can't deal with the oil spill are the politicians (on BOTH sides)?
Why hasn't the Pentagon weighed in? Why hasn't anyone directly asked the navy?
I'm really bothered by this.

2. There's oil there.

SSN 683
The "research and development" function of the extended hull includes intelligence gathering and underwater salvage. Reportedly, the Parche can support covert intelligence-gathering operations similar to IVY BELLS and HOLYSTONE, and a remote grapple extended through a hatch in the submarine's keel can salvage relatively small items from the ocean floor (such as missiles, nuclear warheads, satellites, etc.)
Like all the Sturgeon-class submarines, Parche is of ice-strengthened construction, with reinforced sail incorporating diving planes capable of pivoting 90 degrees (vertical) to avoid damage when the boat crashes through ice to surface. Besides her bow-mounted sonar (in that location to isolate it the maximum distance from her screw), she mounts short-range navigational sonars (both upward and forward facing) plus armored spotlights and closed-circuit television cameras for under-ice operations.

Here's what the President can do - urge the Coast Guard to issue approval for those plans as quickly as possible.
Now, there are good reasons why the Coast Guard and the Corps of Engineers move slowly on these things, they have to review to make sure nothing will go wrong. And I want them to do whatever review they think is necessary.
But this isn't a time when the folks reviewing those plans need to be showing up at 8 and leaving for home at 4 every day.

Yes, it's about the bureaucracy, which exists for a reason, and which, believe it or not, protects us all even though we're unaware of it most of the time.
This, however, is sort of an emergency, and I just hope the bureaucrats are giving this the time (and overtime) it deserves to get their approvals done as quickly as they can.

I think that it is the roll of the state (the roll of the governor and local leaders) to be the first responders in any situation short of war. No?

Yes, it would have been.
In the first few days though -
BP was underestimating (by a lot) how much oil was spewing out of there.
And there's no good way to measure it, once it reaches the surface and becomes ribbons of oil spreading out all over the place. It's not like there's a solid area covered with oil - it breaks up into ribbons and spreads out.
I think people made plans based on the information at hand, and did what they had to do given the information they had.
Now - after this is all over - perhaps this stuff can all be done and put into an emergency response plan for the future, with the approvals all there and in order ahead of time. But the failure to have that plan in place is a state fault, not the Obama administration's fault.

As to BP's fault, you are on the money. I don't think anyone faults the Obama administration for the catastrophe. Those who do are idiots, not unlike the idiots who blamed Bush for Katrina.

It's kind of dumb to blame presidents. Most of the people on the regulatory end are career government employees. The only thing that changes between presidents are the executive branch leaders. The people out in the field doing inspections and such stay employed until they retire.

Exactly.
In fact, one of the reasons for the existence of a protected civil service is to ensure continuity of service, so that people with experience aren't fired and replaced with folks who have none.
They do the same thing day after day; their work changes when the laws and policies they are enforcing change.
And since there's been no incident out there for decades, then honestly, who knew there might be a problem with how the agency was functioning? It's not possible to know something when that something hasn't yet happened (if that makes any sense).

If we're going to go down the cause route in the eyes of the public there's a big difference between hurricane Katrina (an act of God) and this oil spill (an act of British Petroleum aka BP).
Sure there will be fallout inflicted on Obama because of this but it will all fall upon BP in the long run the same as it did with the Exxon Valdez. Most people remember Exxon and not "the drunk captain."
Don't forget. This is BP. It's a British corporation so the fact that it is a "foreign" oil company won't bode well with the American people. Especially when we start seeing the long term impact with the fishing industry in the region.

Did you see the link on Drudge to Bill Maher's opinion re Obama and how he should go gangsta on BP? Really blatant offensive racial stereotyping , condemnation from left in 5...4...3...
Oh, I'll give it a go. Bill Maher is an anti-vaxxer childless ding dong. Because of his miscall on that issue, everything else he spouts is compromised.

Ain't that the truth. You have to question his critical thinking skills.

For me, the jury is still out on how this administration will play out.
That said, he's got an enormous amount on his plate, more than usual.
I think he's had some wins, some losses and some draws. What I find depressing is the lack of desire to to really talk about the losses and draws. Every president has those, no big deal. As voters, we do need to talk about the quality of governance, regardless of politics.
Agreed.
Perhaps the campaign period is a better time to discuss those things.

Just the opposite, I believe.
Democracy is messy all the time. It's supposed to be.
Constant questioning os how we do things. That is the power of the press, to hold elected representatives accountable.

One of the best reasons to hope that the numbers hold up for House Republicans this fall.
Because the Republicans have a better idiot?
