The last three IDF military adventures (south Lebanon, Gaza and this one) have not put Israeli use of force in a good light. They have done Israel far more harm than good. It would have been simple enough to disable the ship without the poorly planned and conducted commando confrontation. Sometimes I think the state of Israel is its own worst enemy.

I don’t know what the ultimate results of this latest “use of force” will be, but I know that South Lebanon and Gaza have been relatively quiet since those wars. We don’t fight to put ourselves in a good light, we do it to protect ourselves.

First of all it’s not that simple.
Second of all, if you do disable the ship, you give the passengers the option of claiming a humanitarian crisis on board, or declaring a hunger strike, creating a long media frenzy.
the results aren’t optimal, but the only solution was a quick resolution of the problem.

Golly, that’s strange: I just read an article in the French press citing an eyewitness account by a European present during the boarding. According to him, there were no metal poles, only wooden.

Normally, this video would invalidate his testimony. But I rather doubt it will make much difference to the French media.

Bad Penny Dept. wouldn’t you know it, good old Charles Enderlin (he of the Mohammed al-Dura hoax) is still working as a ‘Grand Reporter’ for France’s Channel Two. To his credit, his analyses were a tiny bit more measured that most - which may be the reason they haven’t run any of his reports since I saw the first one the morning after the boarding.

re: #15 comradebillyboy

Let’s see - Hizbullah invades Israel and takes Israeli soldiers hostage and kills several others; fires thousands of rockets at Israel and Israel invades Southern Lebanon to eliminate Hizbullah’s military capabilities. Since then, Hizbullah is supposed to be disarmed under UNIFIL and UN SCR 1771. Sounds like the Israelis got that one right, even if they didn’t eradicate the Hizbullah scum (who by the simple act of surviving claim victory and now hope to take over the Lebanese government coopting UNIFIL in the process).

Hamas attempts to murder Israelis with kassams and mortars. Israel doesn’t take kindly to this following Israel’s withdrawal in 2005 in the name of peace. Israel goes in and eradicates much of Hamas’ military capabilities. Now? There aren’t as many kassams being fired - which isn’t as good as being completely kassam free, but the deterrence has been restored.

The Israeli blockade has thwarted Hamas military capabilities, and the humanitarian aid continues flowing through Israeli and Egyptian ports into Gaza such that there aren’t food or energy shortages except when Hamas purposefully tries manipulating things to create a crisis and propaganda event.

That’s what happened here too - Hamas got their supporters to engage in a violent encounter on board one of the flotilla’s ships - the rest were peacefully transited to Ashdod.

Is the world waking up?
Following U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and others, the President of the Czech Senate, Dr. Přemysl Sobotka, says the Turkish flotilla was a planned provocation designed to entrap Israel.

Dr. Sobotka told Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin on Wednesday, “As a doctor, I certainly regret any loss of life, but there is no doubt that this was a planned provocation designed to drag Israel into a trap.”

“Many in the European community feel as I do,” he added, “but they are afraid to speak out publicly.”

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) — Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo said today that he has instructed the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv to provide consular assistance to 12 Malaysian nationals who were detained by Israeli authorities following the attack on the Freedom Flotilla in the Gaza Strip May 31.

Romulo asked its officials in Israel to provide assistance to these Malaysian nationals upon the request of their government.

In a note verbale sent to the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian government requested the country to provide consular assistance in accordance with the agreement on “Assistance by ASEAN Missions in Third Countries to Nationals of ASEAN Member Countries in Conflict/Crisis Situations.” Malaysia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.

I don’t disagree that the flotilla is getting more coverage than it should. I’m just saying that in a media with a “disaster-of-the-week” state of mind, things are either going to be obsessively covered and eventually forgotten to a degree when the next disaster comes along.

It doesn’t mean that the previous events were never actually covered, and it certainly doesn’t mean that it no longer gets top billing in their affected regions.

Note how the BP Oil Spill is being viciously relegated across international media right now compared to the flotilla. And the Cheonan incident is still weighing heavily on the minds of the Koreans.

Israel lost the friendship of Turkey when the Islamists came to power, and no matter how much sucking up to Turkey we do, this relationship is going only one way so long as they are in power. so rather than do the bidding of our neighbors, the proper thing to do is to stand up for your principles and your word. So long as there is a blockade on Gaza, Israel must enforce it. To back off this one time is to invite a hundred more such “peace” flotillas.

An e-mail contact writes:

This morning KPFA interviewed a passenger from one of the smaller “flotilla” boats.

He had also been on the U.S. ship Liberty during the 6 day war in 1967.
The Liberty ship was attacked by Israel, as most of you probably know. Some U.S. armed forces were killed.
It was a notorious event and error acknowledged error by Israel, and one that Israel-haters love to replay and create conspiracy theories about….

So what kind of first hand testimony would you expect from such a person?

He said that the IDF boarded their boat while most of them were sleeping, and took over control of the vessel after roughing up the people that were driving it (my paraphrase).

He was personally “shot with a paint ball gun…. and it did not hurt”.

After being captured, the Israeli’s were “very polite” to them.
They were “please” and “thank you”.

The boat passengers were individually interviewed, generally being asked about their health and also if they would like to go home that same day or remain for three days for observation (which would be in a jail) and then be sent home. He opted for the former.

As far as he could tell, everyone was treated very politely.
The Israeli’s “seemed to want to just get it over with quickly”.

Something tells me that this guy is not going to go over big with the “progressive’ crowd.

And just how were they supposed to disable it?

It’s simple, Foul the propellers with a steel net, a real heavy one. Suddenly unbalanced, the (probably ill-maintained) shafts warp, the warpage feeds on itself, the shafts jump their bearings, the seams start to open, the whole bottom splits open, and the ship sinks in about 30 seconds.
It has happened before.

I hear what you’re saying. And you could add that the Cheonan is being covered more accurately too. I see that in Korea it is of major concern. I don’t see the Irish getting that excited about it, yet another ship was launched from Ireland to break the blockade.

So in about a week we’ll see if you’re right. I hope you are. I hope this passes quickly, and falls into the heap of weekly sensations.

73 researchok  Jun 3, 2010 9:49:32am

If the ‘freedom flotilla’ passengers had no compunction when it comes fashioning deadly weapons to assault Israelis who are boarding a ship to inspect the cargo, one can only imagine how delighted they would to transport weapons to Hamas terrorists who are unburdened by the charade of ‘peace activism’.

That would only get in the way of diluting the crystal clear Hamas message of genocide.

What do you call putting a group of young men armed with slingshots, gas masks, and flak jackets in the middle of the Med, and forcing the Israelis to respond?

The Islamic Way.

Imagine a culture which requires killing off a significant percentage of each generation of young men, so that many young women can be forced to be the second, third, or fourth wives of an older man. You get a warped reality so that bloody victories—or bloody defeats—are better than bloodless victories or peace.

That is the dynamic behind all Islamic thinking. Peace, even with other Islamic countries is a condition only to be tolerated if you must. Feuds, especially long standing ones that kill only young men, are good. If you can’t stir up racial, national, or ethnic hatred? Hey, what about Sunni vs. Shite? That’s always good for a few dead men, and we can claim they are martyrs on both sides! Everyone wins, except the dead, and they were destined to be losers anyway.

I could go on, but you should get the picture by now. Occasional Moslem leaders try to be serious about peace, but before they get too far, assassins will be literally dying to martyr them. If you want to know if an Islamist was part of the planning for an assassination, do a body count. Thirty and up? Sure thing, especially if the dead included the assassins.
