Disgusting Racist Slurs of the Day

Politics • Views: 2,938

Today’s disgusting right wing racist is South Carolina Republican Senator Jake Knotts: S.C. Republicans condemn ‘raghead’ comment.

Of course they condemn it. You’re not supposed to use words like this. (In public.)

South Carolina Republicans were quick Thursday evening to condemn the remarks of a prominent Republican State Senator, Jake Knotts, who referred to a gubernatorial candidate as a “raghead” on an online political show today. [Knotts also referred to President Obama with the same term.]

Knotts, a foe of Governor Mark Sanford and his protege, State Rep. Nikki Haley, made the remark of Haley on the local webcast Pub Politics.

Haley was born a Sikh, and the slur can refer to Arabs, Muslims, or those who — like Sikh men — wear turbans. She is a convert to Christianity.

UPDATE: The State, quoting people who watched the show, quotes Knotts as saying:

“We already got one raghead in the White House, we don’t need a raghead in the governor’s mansion.”

Living in the Carolinas has taught me one thing. You never, ever know the depths of stupid state politicians will plumb.

In his non-apology, Knotts said he was just having fun like they do on Saturday Night Live and that it was an irreverent forum... I always love it when they use racist slurs on Saturday Night Live...they're so funny! Oh, wait...SNL doesn't use racist slurs for comedic purposes...

Yep, this may not be any more of a "mistake" than Rand Paul's opposition to the CRA. It is a message to the base.

There is something to that, but not as much as you think.

Here in the Carolinas the bubba's want their local guys to speak heir language- but only so much.

House reps and Senators get eaten alive nowadays by voters if they are too 'bubba'. The days of a Jesse Helms or Robert Byrd types getting elected are long over.

The ignorance of those who confuse Sikh's and Muslims is astounding.

I got to attend an awards ceremony by the Toronto Jewish Federation called "Words and Deeds", which is an annual award given to Canadians who are upstanding citizens, role models and have -- in both words and deeds -- helped make the Toronto community a better place.

The year I went, the COO of Scotiabank (Canadian bank), Sabi Marwah was given the award. He is Sikh, and very proud of his Sikh heritage.

It was really quite inspiring to see the coming together of the Sikh and Jewish communities at this awards ceremony, as many people were invited to support him.

I really don't have much tolerance for people who attack Sikh's thinking they are Muslims or Arabs.

Oh good g-d:

“This isn’t the first time I’ve said it,” Knotts said. “I’m not on a crusade to downgrade her, but if someone asks me I’ll tell ‘em. And look here, someone wants to vote for her knowing the truth, vote for her.”

Knotts said that South Carolina is a religious community.

“We need a good Christian to be our governor,” he said. “She’s hiding her religion. She ought to be proud of it. I’m proud of my god.”

Knotts says he believes Haley’s father has been sending letters to India saying that Haley is the first Sikh running for high office in America. He says her father walks around Lexington wearing a turban.

“We’re at war over there,” Knotts said.

Asked to clarify, he said he did not mean the United States was at war with India, but was at war with “foreign countries.”

The GOP really, really needs to draw a very firm line in the sand, right now, or the party is going to become a regional party of nativists, and nothing more.

If the Democrats are not kept in check by an honest opposition, we're not going to make any progress. Cap-and-trade is a good example: most of the Democrat's proposals for cap-and-trade are flawed and will do little, if any good. But they are not being criticized one those grounds; instead, the GOP is engaging in pure AGW-denial.

We need a strong GOP that's firmly based in reality, not a populist bunch of shouty cynical politicians playing to a nativist, anti-science base.

And now, some news from the weird;

Topless ban at beach doesn't apply to transgendered men with enhanced breasts

"Passersby came up to the lifeguard and said they were alarmed and unhappy with the females showing their breasts," Police Chief Keith Banks said. "The lifeguard responded and saw that they were males."

Banks says the men eventually put their shirts back on, but that it could have been difficult to issue a citation because Rehoboth law defines indecent exposure two ways:

A male is guilty of indecent exposure if he exposes his genitals or buttocks under circumstances which he knows his conduct is likely to cause affront or alarm to another person.

A female is guilty of indecent exposure if she exposes her genitals, breasts or buttocks under circumstances which she knows her conduct is likely to cause affront or alarm to another person."

"In this case, they had male genitalia; therefore, they are not guilty of a crime," Banks says.

Racist French minister fined

PARIS - A COURT convicted France's Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux on Friday of making a racial insult about a young man of Arab origin.

The Paris court fined Mr Hortefeux 750 euros (S$1,276) and ordered him to pay 2,000 euros in damages for comments he made last September about a young activist of the ruling right-wing UMP party of President Nicolas Sarkozy.

'When there's one, it's OK. It's when there are a lot of them that there are problems,' Mr Hortefeux, 52, said in a filmed encounter in September. He was apparently referring to a young man of Algerian parentage - one of France's large community of north African origin - with whom he was getting ready to pose for a photo.

Thing is, it has been tolerated in the national party because the GOP has spent the last 40+ years courting the Dixiecrats and playing on racial resentments and other issues like them. Couple that with the parallel strategy of the religious right and the socons working their way into the power structures of the party, and it's all one big recipe for disaster.

The reason we're not seeing big outrage from the national party is because the people running the national party, by and large, don't see a problem. Who cares if some liberals and a few squishy moderates get upset when the True Believers will still pull the switch at the voting booth? All we're seeing now is the Southern Strategy writ large. The things they used to turn a blind eye to here in the South are now things they gloss over on a national level.

Thinking that this was a mistake, politically, is to miss the point. This was a play to the GOP base. That it is offensive to non-extremists doesn't matter. What matters is that this exactly what the S.C. GOP base wants to hear.

To miss this point is to misunderstand exactly how extreme the GOP has become, especially in places like S.C.

If we are going to talk about racism, let us be aware that wea e all racist to a degree: it is aprt of human nature to make judgements about other people based on their appearance.

It is only an important issue if it means that we deny them access to their rights and priveleges based on their race. Some politicians have made it rather clear that they see race as a grounds for denying people these rights.

I've found that for some reason foreigners are often far more likely to unload their personal racism on an american than a fellow american is. It's weird, you're just hanging out, having a few beers and suddenly one guy starts talking about how his minority (in terms of share ownership) business partner, who's right there, doesn't really look traditionally japanese enough and is probably of korean extraction. You just sit there and smile through the other guy's discomfort. It's fun.

re: #81 Obdicut

Can you explain what you mean by this?

Unfortunately, while I might not agree with the far-right on a lot, I do agree that the spendin' that the Democrats have engaged in since takin' back the majority in '06 is way outta control and we as a nation can't afford to let it continue. Take the tax extension bill that's been dubbed a "Jobs" bill by the addition of...wait for it...yet another unemployment extension, as well as the "Doc Fix" that ultimately was cut from the health care bill to give it the illusion of cutting the deficit. And when it came out that the bill was too expensive, Dems answered by simply cutting two years off the spending, but none of the spending.

87 Obdicut  Fri, Jun 4, 2010 10:49:06am

re: #86 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

The spending is not different from that the GOP engaged in. At all. The main difference is the GOP tends to spend while cutting taxes, engaging in more deficit spending.

Furthermore, how the fuck is spending you view as excessive 'selling us down the river'?

Never said the GOP's spending was any better. In truth, I think both parties have grown overly comfortable with answering everything with a new spending bill, getting outraged and tossing out accusations when suggestions go up that spending be frozen or cut. Members of both parties are quick to clutch their pearls and get the vapors as they moan about how cutting this or that is simply "unthinkable."

As for the "selling" part, we're financin' a majority of this spendin' through selling off debt to foreign nations, like our good "buddies" the ChiComs. We're mortgaging our grandkids and pretty much our great-grandkids futures now to shovel more money on the fire. We're not Greece yet, but we're damn sure on our way.

Though that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Never said the GOP's spending was any better.

Then what did you mean by saying that the Democrat's sell us down the river, while the GOP engages with racism? Shouldn't you have said that the GOP does both? And why did you talk about the Democrat's spending since 2006?

As for the "selling" part, we're financin' a majority of this spendin' through selling off debt to foreign nations, like our good "buddies" the ChiComs.

And? I'm sorry, but in what way does that sell us down the river? The US sells most debt, still, to domestic, not foreign, sources. And China is one, and only one, of foreign debt-holders. Can you explain how that sells us down the river? I'd say that the anti-science attitude of the GOP, the endorsement of outsourcing of jobs, the tax breaks for corporations that funnel money out of the US by the GOP, all represent a hell of a lot more of that sort of 'selling' than expenditure that accrues debt.

Are you one of those who thinks that no spending was needed during the crash of the economy?

You're asking me basically to defend the GOP, which I'm not gonna do, because I think the GOP at this point is every bit as wrong as the DNC. Point is I've grown sick of the snake oil both sides are sellin', but haven't yet found a third party I could endorse with a straight face. I'd had hopes that perhaps the GOP had had an epiphany after '08, that perhaps the moderates would finally get a leg-up and throw off the last vestiges of craziness and far-right lunacy. Instead, it seems the party has decided to double down and hope the loonies can carry them to greatness.

But, as I said, it's simply my opinion, and I'm no economist. I'm just a guy sittin' out of work, waiting on the world to change.

re: #92 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

I'm sorry, but the idea that both parties are equally bad is just nutty to me. Even from a probability standpoint, it's outrageously unlikely.

Right now, the GOP's anti-science, Austrian economics, nativist attitudes are far, far, far more reprehensible and dangerous to the United States than the Democrats tendency to overspend is-- especially since the GOP tends to raise government spending more than the Democrats do.

One of my friends in high school and I decided that we would take the usual racial slurs that would have been sent our way (I'm Mexican, she's Korean) and turn them around on each other. She called me a certain Korean slur, and I called her a certain Mexican one, and those were our nicknames for each other.

IMO, it was a good way to handle things at the time. By robbing those words of their power and using them in such a ridiculous way, we showed we had a sense of humor about it all, I think.
