Did Reuters Crop Out a Broken Bottle?

Media • Views: 6,251

Here we go again.

The IHH website which was apparently supplying Reuters with their photos (which someone at Reuters then cropped to remove incriminating evidence of weapons) has now removed all photos from their site, possibly to prevent finding any more cropped images. But Reuters continues to publish photos from the “activists.”

For example, this one:

You may recall this video, showing the activists arming themselves with metal pipes, knives, body armor … and broken bottles.

Did Reuters crop this image to remove the jagged end of a broken bottle? I can’t say for sure, since the originals are now hidden by the IHH. But notice the caption:

A pro-Palestinian activist holds a bottle…

Yep, just standing there holding a bottle. I guess you get pretty thirsty wearing a gas mask.

I’d also like to see what the guy on the left is holding. I’d be willing to bet the pic is cropped again to remove evidence.

The really sad part about this is that it’s no longer surprising behavior from al-Reuters.

he needs the gas mask to protect his delicate journalist’s nostrils from the stench of guilt.

glad to see al-reuters’ integrity going up in flames [as if it hadn’t a long time ago].

Carrying over from last thread:

The captions for the photos are also showing bias. Even the language used— like them ‘holding’ the Israeli commando— is stupid. They’re not ‘holding’ him. They’re restraining him. A few of the photos have, more accurately ‘holding down’. But ‘holding’ instead of the more natural ‘restraining’ seems weird.

Or, for example, this one:

[Link: www.daylife.com…]

Pro-Palestinian activists are seen onboard the Gaza-bound Turkish ship Mavi Marmara in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea

They don’t mention the ‘pro-palestinian’ ‘activists’ are holding weapons (and a single hit from an iron bar can maim or kill someone, that’s not a fucking around weapon), they make sure to note the ship is in international waters, and they call it “Gaza-Bound”, not mentioning it’s trying to run a blockade or that it was legal for the Israelis to board it in international waters.

Maybe I’m overparsing, but it seems like every time they have an opportunity to clarify in favor of the Israelis, they don’t take it, and all terminology is slanted slightly towards the ‘activists’.

You’ve got it all wrong

Thats a bottle of champagne to celebrate the arrival of the marines. The gas mask is an OSHA safety mandate. You KNOW sometimes when you open a bottle of champagne the cork flies off and could take an eye out, not to mention the liquid itself shooting out

As I overlay the shot on various aspect rations (APS chip or full frame) I can kinda guess at the cropping, depending on which orientation you presume. I’m not an expert I just use PS… Look like there is a lot gone from the left. I’m trying to infer the photographers angle by the flash glare.

12 lawhawk  Mon, Jun 7, 2010 8:30:45am

By the way, it does look like the bottle is broken - you can see the spider-marks of a broken bottle near the guy’s thumb and forefinger.

No photoshopping, but the text reads:

Blood is seen on steps onboard the Gaza-bound Turkish ship Mavi Marmara in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea early May 31, 2010. Israeli marines stormed the Turkish aid ship bound for Gaza on Monday and nine pro-Palestinian activists were killed, triggering a diplomatic crisis and an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council. Picture taken May 31, 2010.

To me, that captioning is implying the blood came from the dead activists, whereas we’ve seen wounded Israelis being dragged along that stairwell. It makes no mention of the attack on the Israelis. It makes sure to mention that the activists were killed.

re: #12 lawhawk

fair point. also, the bottle is clearly empty of all contents. you would be able to see it [it being beer, or champagne, or water, or whatever] - and this is true even if the majority of the liquid inside had been consumed, due to the angle at which the man is holding it.

so, either an empty bottle held at a VERY odd angle, or broken. given all of the other information on the mavi, i’m going to go with the latter for $1000, trebek.

You are not overparsing. The Reuters captions were translated directly from the Farsi. Or the Arabic.

If the IDF marines were standing on their feet, one could say the “activists” were grappling with them.

Or fighting. Fighting would be a good, neutral word.

Since the pictures I’ve seen show IDF guys on the deck, with people - ahem - restraining them, “holding” is not a neutral word.

Jerusalem post: Gov’t disturbed by Reuters’ cropping of raid photos

A letter was sent to Reuters chief Tom Glocer on Monday expressing the “grave concern of the government of Israel” over the cropping of photographs taken from the Turkish Mavi Marama ship last week by Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs MK Yuli Edelstein.

The photos, which were published on Sunday in the Turkish Hurriyet daily, showed images of the commandos, their fatigues stained with blood, subdued by passengers aboard the Mavi Marmara ship but excluded the knives held by passengers.

At the popular blog LittleGreenFootballs.com, which initially took note of the missing knife, the blog’s founder Charles Johnson posted the story along with exhibits of both sets of pictures to the site.

I think that’s where the knife in the photos discussed earlier came from…could be they removed it from the commandos to stab them, or to keep the commandos from using them in self defense…can’t tell much from a still shot, so I won’t speculate either way…besides, I’ve seen no reports on how many commandos were stabbed with knives (either knives the boat people had or those they may have taken from commandos). I’m sure someone here will educate me on this, however.

If Helen Thomas had simply blurted out “they [the Israelis] should get the hell out of Palestine”, I would have given her a pass.

Plenty of people think that. Depending on how you define “Palestine”, I would even agree. For example, if it means a state alongside Israel that recognizes its neighbor, renounces the charter passages calling for said neighbor’s destruction, and does everything in its power to keep terrorists from sabotaging the peace, then, hellz yeah, get the hell out.

But her continued comments made it clear that she actually believes “Palestine” to include all of present-day Israel, and that the Jews have no business being there at all.

Top that off with her rabid, nasty, gratuitous notion that “they” should go back to the two countries that did the most to wipe them out, and she’s showing her true colors.

That her closest collaborator, the man who co-wrote her latest book and was working on other projects with her, very publicly distanced himself from her on a Sunday speaks volumes.

Retirement was overdue.

I have generally refrained from commenting on this entire storyline, as I do not feel I am knowledgeable enough on the subject. However, I have been reading and appreciate the complexity and have been trying to educate myself. I am proud to be a small part of this blog that seeks the truth, digs deeper than catchy slogans and bumper sticker politics.

Kudos to Charles and KT for calling out Reuters as well as other media for twisting the truth. And to all of the well informed posters here that take a rational and patient approach in their comments. It has been enlightening.

Maybe Obama can invite all the living ex-presidents and former press secretaries to the White House for a celebration. Carter could be left out, though. Helen was pretty easy on him, for reasons that are all too obvious now.

LGF just suddenly jump the curb again for anybody else?

Yes, it’s been doing that all morning.

Maybe now that Helen Thomas is unemployed she can join a flotilla.

We have a vocabulary problem; the Arabs are not using the term “occupied territories” the same way we are.

We, in the West, use it to refer to Gaza and the West Bank.

The Arabs use it to refer to ALL of Israel.

The sooner we in the West recognize that, the better.

Unfortunately, I doubt that Helen will get the good schellaking from the press that she deserves, not simply for her bile and hate-filled words of last week, but for the decades of treating her seat in the press briefings as a bully pulpit for her own agenda. Instead, she’ll get a warm send-off, fondly remembered for her years of “dedicated” service in the press, with people suddenly unable to find anything bad about her to say.

Like Dan Rather, and Zinedine Zidane, she ends it on a low note.

I thought Zidane reacted rather well.

Luckily, that hasn’t turned out to be the case.
