Imagine, when your kids are away in college, calling them up at 11pm on a Friday, and actually seeing them, SEEING them..."Uh, sweety, is that a bong on the table behind you? And why is everyone at that party naked?"

The Boy Scouts are issuing semaphore merit badges for their 100th anniversary. It is one of four merit badges from the past that boys can only earn during 2010. Another is tracking (used to be called stalking - but was changed for obvious reasons).

That's a merit badge the scout-masters earn after they meet the single mothers of some of their scouts.

I'll stick with my new HTC EVO 4G, which has almost all the features that the new iPhone4 has - including a few that actually surpass the iPhone, plus (at least in my case) a functional 4G (WiMax) network to connect to, which Apple won't be able to claim until the end of this year at the very earliest.

Another big plus is that Sprint isn't sticking caps/surcharges on their data plans in the same fashion as AT&T is.

26 Cato the Elder  Mon, Jun 7, 2010 1:53:21pm

I am trying to pen a guide for new lizards. Opinions welcome:

Updated...

A few thoughts on LGF in general:

This site isn't left or right. This site isn't pro or con per-se - at least not in a knee jerk way. This is one of the only places out there where facts have to come first. Many people talk out of their asses and they are particularly flatulent when online and protected by the anonymity of the web.

Here though, you have to actually back your statements up with real live facts. There is a distinction here between fact and opinion. Most, but not all, lizards respect the entirely subjective opinions of others. If you want to say that x appeals to you more than y for whatever subjective reason, then so be it.

We have people here who lean left and people here who lean right. For example, there is a serious philosophical debate to still be had on things like the role of and the size of government or about how to improve education or about all manner of topics that honest folks can legitimately disagree.

This drives people who just want to vent extreme views, spout slogans or make neat little categories for things crazy. The real world is rarely simple or easily classified. In the case of many things the truth seems to have a liberal bias. In other cases, the truth seems to have a conservative bias. The fact is that the truth has no bias, but people with biases hate it when the truth does not fit their preconceptions or in may cases delusions.

Some examples, given the current polarization of left and right:

If you stupidly think that AGW isn't happening, evolution isn't real, the oil-spill isn't that bad, the founding fathers never meant for there to be a separation of Church and State etc.. The truth, as in the actual facts, has a liberal bias. Too bad. And yes, you really are ignorant and likely stupid and delusional for thinking otherwise.

If you stupidly think that Hamas are somehow the good guys or that Israel acts in a way that is overly harsh militarily, by the standards of every other military in the world, then the actual truth has a conservative bias. And yes, you really are ignorant and likely stupid and delusional for thinking otherwise.

What we do not tolerate here is fabrication of facts, denial of facts, illogic and general stupidity. We really hate racism. We really hate mindlessness. We really hate fools. If you come here twisting or inventing history, you will be shown the error of your ways, usually politely at first - for a legitimate mistake, and harshly if you are pimping a hateful view. If you come here claiming for instance, that evolution violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics, a horde of Lizards will point out what the Second law actually says, why you got it wrong and why you should do some learning before opening your mouth. The same will happen if you make unsubstantiated claims about AGW. The same will happen if you spout a crazy conspiracy theory. The same will happen if you draw false equivalences or false parallels.

If you do these things, we will eat your pixels for lunch and then cackle about roasted buttocks.

There are all sorts of Lizards here. Most are very bright. Many have very detailed experience and actual expertise in very diverse fields. Almost all of us who stay here stay, not only because we form real friendships with others, but because we are constantly learning from the experience.

The bottom line is, leave your slogans at the door.

If you make a claim, be able to argue it with facts and evidence and if you can't do that, don't bother. We don't care. Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. You are not the first asshole to voice an opinion. That applies to left and right. It applies to you if you are from any sort of extreme view that thinks in soundbites rather than evidence.

This new Apple iPhone must have been a pretty good announcement because RIM (Blackberry) stock took a swan dive today.

54 american_peanuts  Mon, Jun 7, 2010 6:47:21pm

I don't get the apple-cult.
I waited years until an open source unit finally popped up and there is no way I'm switching away from the droid OS.

Just to hear apple guys saying, and talking about their market like this makes my blood boil:

10:08AM - “Let me show you some of these great apps…” Pulse, Gowalla, eBay, webMD, Iron Man, the list goes on. Showing off Elements… email: “I earned more on the sales of Elements for iPad the first day than on the past 5 years of Google ads on periodictable.com” Heh. Steve: “This is what we LOVE to hear from you guys.” Chuckles.

What the hell ? Are you happy about the fact that you make an electronic device that in order to use it an ounce beyond simple spec, you have to pay and pay and pay ???
I guess they are.

[and where is Israel in this debate ???....]

55 MichaelJ  Mon, Jun 7, 2010 8:16:00pm

Please explain yourself, american_peanuts.

Are you happy about the fact that you make an electronic device that in order to use it an ounce beyond simple spec, you have to pay and pay and pay ???

If you are referring to the apps that can be used, are you aware of the fact that there are thousands of absolutely free apps? Did you know that the average price for most apps is one dollar? How does that equate to pay and pay? I completely disagree. If you don't like having the best possible device with the most available apps, then buy something else. The droid would not even exist if it weren't for the iPhone pushing the boundaries of smart phone innovation in the first place. Do you remember what the hot phone on the market was before the iPhone debuted? It was the RAZR by Motorola. Woohoo!

re: #55 MichaelJ

Smartphone wars are far better than politics. I'll do this day in day out.

Reading back, I did get the translation wrong. They were talking about the apps, my oopsi. Also, I give you that apple is a trail blazer.
Heck, my first
10 print "boo"
20 goto 10
was done on an apple IIE which I loved so much.

But I stand my ground. In order to do anything "extra" with your iPad, you have to pay. Come on, no usb ports ? An adapter for external screen ?
It's not like they couldn't fit it in, thy didn't want to because it's a business model. Same with the fixed internal memory you have to decide in advance.

And yet, at the same time, this is a company, and their aim is to make money. If you are a supporter if this type of brand - good for you.
I'm staying with my droid.

60 srjh  Tue, Jun 8, 2010 12:09:36am

Not quite enough to get me to upgrade, but from a technical perspective there are a few nice improvements (although a 64 GB model wouldn't hurt... perhaps they're keeping it up their sleeve).

On the other hand, even the free iPhone OS 4 should be worth looking forward to, maybe even worth un-jb'ing my phone for.

61 MichaelJ  Tue, Jun 8, 2010 9:16:08am

re: #59 american_peanuts

Having tried both, I prefer the way that the iPhone works. Also, I didn't even mention the iPad, so I'm not sure why you brought it up in your reply. It's a consumer device and it is limited in scope. Apple is not targeting professionals that want to have all the ports and functionality of a laptop with this device.

If I'm not mistaken, the droid apps cost money as do any upgrades you might want, like additional memory. Motorola is a company that aims to make money as well...

They are both good phones, so it really boils down to personal preference.
