A Birther on the CA GOP Ticket?

I haven’t been paying much attention to raving Birther kook Orly Taitz’s campaign for the GOP nomination for secretary of state, but amazingly, there’s actually a chance she might win today: GOP bad dream: Birther on ticket.

California Republicans optimistic about their prospects in November could find themselves with a bit of a problem after the votes are counted in Tuesday’s primaries — a statewide ticket with the so-called “Birther Queen” as one of their candidates.

Orly Taitz is an Israeli émigré who has spent the past two years filing lawsuits challenging President Barack Obama’s right to be president on the grounds that he was born in Kenya. In the process, she has earned herself $20,000 in court fines.

Now she’s running for the GOP nomination for secretary of state, and with her establishment-backed primary opponent mounting a less-than-stellar campaign against her, operatives say there’s a chance she could win.

Just what the Republican Party needs — a Birther secretary of state. It’s a measure of how pervasive this craziness is on the right that Taitz is even in the running at all.

UPDATE at 6/8/10 11:48:15 am:

Good grief. Republican Jewish Coalition Hosts Birther Taitz As ‘Special Guest’ At Annual Bash.

The longtime Birther agitator and dentist who is now running for the GOP secretary of state nomination in California was a “special guest” of the Republican Jewish Coalition at the group’s “annual summer bash” at the Beverly Hills Hilton Sunday. Also in attendance: GOP heavyweights Karl Rove, former Senator Norm Coleman, and California Senate candidates Chuck DeVore and Carly Fiorina.

The program for the event, touted by Taitz on her website, lists about 15 “Special Guests” including Coleman, Reps. Connie Mack (R-FL), Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), Edward Royce (R-CA), and Taitz. Speakers included Rove, who gave the keynote and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) (with whom Taitz is already acquainted).
