In their four and a half minute video segment about Reuters cropping out the knives from those photos, Fox News crops out all mention of Little Green Footballs.

An absolutely classic case of Fox News lifting a story from the blogosphere without any attribution except unnamed “critics” and “bloggers.”

I posted a link earlier today of Foxnation giving Charles redit and someone else posted a link to Fox's main page in which he is given credt. IIRC, both quoted him, too.

Has CNN or MSNBC even touched this story?

Why should you want credit, Charles? Don't you do it for the loves of the chase?

Wait...what? Bloggers actually make real money off of traffic? Who knew?

Well, there is that, but traffic is traffic, and credit is credit. All of the networks do this crap all the time, and not just from political blogs. Tech blogs regularly get their stories lifted without attribution too.

They did this much anyway...

[Link: www.thefoxnation.com...]

But when the photos were released by Reuters later in the day, bloggers immediately cried foul, taking note of discrepancies between the Turkish originals and two in particular that had been filed by the international news organization, claiming that Reuters had purposely excluded a knife from one of the photos, and a knife and even some blood in another.

At the popular blog Little- GreenFootballs.com, which initially took note of the missing knife, the blog’s founder, Charles Johnson, posted the story along with exhibits of both sets of pictures.

25 Killgore Trout  Tue, Jun 8, 2010 5:18:47pm

Not only did they rip off the story without proper attribution they completely fucked up the presentation. It was confused, they had a hard time getting the right graphic up at the right time, they attributed one pic to a Turkish paper but the graphic they were showing had an AP watermark, and the presentation was generally confused. It's a very simple story and they made a mess of it. Show the two pics side by side or flash from one to the other and the differences become clear. It was also completely irrelevant for him to mention he was in Lebanon when the Adnan Hajj picture was discovered. He had nothing to do with it.

I expected that most right wing sources would rip off the story or try to hide LGF's involvement. It sucks but that's life. I am glad that it's starting to get MSM coverage because it is an important story and needs wider coverage. I suppose you could make a copyright claim for intellectual property. Not sure if you could win but it would be expensive to find out. Just a link or a mention is all that's required.

Ni hao, mein scaly drughi!

I've been baking - it's a dry heat, so they say - in Las Vegas since Saturday, a conference for my new gig.

Couple observations:

1) Eco was right: Las vegas is the first semiotic city, an entire urban area intended to convey a single message - "You are wealthy; spend."

2) Belaggio has excellent suites, swanky decor, great service, and a casino full of slot-zombies. Ugh! Someone ought to hide them behind a screen or something - it's a real bring-down.

3) Ain't no gambler like a Vietnamese on a lucky streak. Fellow bought everyone around him a steak dinner with his Pai Gow winnings, self included.

Question; If the hypothetical news aggregator tax thing kicks in, will Charles have to pay Reuters for using their defective or misleading material, and will Fox then have to pay the Boss when they swipe his stuff? Could make for complicated record-keeping.

Indeed.

At least Charles gives Reuters credit when he uses their cropped pictures in a story exposing Reuters. And he linked back to them.

Fox, and other media and bloggers, ran with the story but made little or no mention of Charles and LGF. And limited or no linkies. That's effed up.

Charles is a capitalist and linkies mean revenue.

I assume you are asking what this tax discussion was about. I saw it covered recently on CNBC's morning show . Basically the idea is a tax on anyone who refers to other news gathering sources because news aggregations are using content and getting the economic benefit of the work of the journalists. The point was made by one commenter that the journalism business is so ossified that they have not been nimble enough to find ways to monetize their product like Google has.

MSNBC reporting that the oil well from the Deepwater Horizon could be fracturing beneath the BOP...under the sea floor. They're saying that's why they shut down the "top kill" so quickly...as some feared, it may have compromised the bore hole below the surface...so they don't have much choice except to let it flow out the top of the BOP and they won't be able to recover much more than that for fear the downward pressure could cause it to blow out through the seabed.

Yeah. Drudge sends the traffic their way. Those sites should pay him, not the other way around. But tax laws are blunt instruments, so I'm sure the distinction of links versus showing actual copy will not be made. Google's news aggregation snips actual content.

And why might that be? Because the forces of racism an nativism are so strong?

It's because her campaign is essentially being run by national conservative activists, national RP people, and volunteers (read extremist GOP base who believe her rhetoric implicitly) She has no organized ground game.

And without a ground game, she will be pounded flat like a pancake.

More of this very relevant thinker's very serious positions:

Angle believes the U.S. Education Department should be abolished, as she explains on her campaign Web site: "Sharron Angle believes that the Federal Department of Education should be eliminated. The Department of Education is unconstitutional and should not be involved in education, at any level." Angle went further in an interview with a Nevada online publication, writing that she favored the termination of the Energy Department, the EPA and much of the IRS tax code; complete elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

What it means is they'll force the tax through when they think they've got the power to do it. That's the pattern with these things that "no one is talking about"; what it means is they will do it at the first opportunity.

But the FTC said Friday that it's not pushing for a new tax or any other news-related policy change. It's merely trying to decide if -- not when or how -- it should ever take regulatory action as part of its mission to protect consumers and competition.

What does that mean?

Looks like they're trying to decide if such a thing would even be within their purview.

Thank you for saying that.

It is a horrible spectacle and I've had more than a few nasty things to say about BP as well. What I'm worried about, is the media in two ways.

1. They have been giving superficial information from the start, the only "experts" they quote are grandstanding flakes, they have almost no sensible, real industry experts.

2. They are whipping up a frenzy of sensationalism, the leak is bad enough without constantly looking to make it a thousands times worse.

You think kids today are goofy and dumb? Try talking with a room full of supposed "experts" in the field - you'll discover that the guys running the show day-to-day (registrars, administrative policy professionals, state and even federal regulators) are absolutely hopelessly stupid. Honestly, at this conference, my team and I got into it with a fellow from Dept. of Ed - the SOB didn't know his own damned agency's reg's on transfer credit at the post-secondary level and was giving out advice that, if acted on by the audience, would put them in Dutch with their accrediting agencies, most state-level education regulators, and even Uncle Sam his own bad self.

re: #130 reine.de.tout

At the jpost site, it looks to me like they may have typed it correctly, as one word, but because there's a line break where the whole thing couldn't fit on one line, a dash was used (like you were taught to do if you needed to break a word up at the end of one line and continue it on the next line).

But Fox - the name is all on one line, entirely, that dash had to have been placed there.

I've been an editor... sometimes a word that's been broken up winds up in the middle of the page after editing and it isn't always caught on final edit.

That said, it's Fox so, it was more than likely purposeful.

No... I didn't see that... let me tell you what will increase the value of that piece more than anything... it's a stabilized piece, meaning, as it tumbled in, it managed to become stable, not tumbling and flipping, and that's what accounts for the cone shape... plus, it's a very large piece to start with... but it's that rare occurrence that it stop spinning and stabilized like a bullet... that makes it rarer.

Most pieces tumble and spin and become multi-shaped, blow up into smaller fragments and so on.
