‘Ace of Spades’ and Right Wing Blogosphere ‘Ethics’

In his feverish rush to smear LGF by any means possible, wingnut hateblogger Ace of Spades makes an accusation. (Amid a whole bunch of outright lies.)

I have to say this again: Charles Johnson had a bad reputation, even when he was nominally on the right, for simply stealing other bloggers’ finds. I really should contact one of the people ripped off by him to get him to write a post on this.

Well, this is very curious, because there’s a story behind this one that doesn’t end well for Ace of Spades.

Back in March of 2008, Steve Gilbert of the blog Sweetness and Light publicly accused me of stealing one of his stories — which I absolutely did not do. When I wrote to him and explained where I had gotten the story (readers tipped me to it, as often happens), he refused to believe me and threatened to “ruin my reputation” with other bloggers.

So I preemptively wrote emails to several other bloggers, including Ace of Spades, to explain the situation before Steve Gilbert could poison the well with false accusations. This is what I wrote:

… by the way, Steve Gilbert is tossing around some ridiculous threats to “ruin my reputation,” because he’s convinced that I stole a post of his — and it’s completely untrue. I never read his post, all the info came from LGF readers, and I can easily prove it if I have to.

Just in case he emails you about it.

And here’s the reply from Ace of Spades, openly admitting that he feels no compunction at all about stealing posts from Mr. Gilbert:

This is the kind of person who represents the right wing blogosphere: a rank hypocrite, who accuses others of the unethical acts he performs himself.

Two more points that probably should be answered, among all the shameless lies in “Ace of Spades’s” post.

First: “Ace of Spades” says that I used PayPal donation information to out the people at the stalker blog (a blog composed of people who were banned from LGF for various reasons, including supporting genocide among other lovely concepts).

This is a deliberate lie; they’re spreading the lie to try to damage my income from donations. I have never revealed information from PayPal, and I never will.

In fact, the stalkers even filed a complaint with PayPal last year to try to get my account shut down; PayPal dismissed the complaint as unfounded. Which it is.

All information that I used to identify these creepy obsessed individuals came from publicly available sources on the Internet, or from people who had the decency to inform me about them. Period. Any information you share with LGF through PayPal is absolutely kept private.

And what they fail to tell you is the reason why I outed these people — because they were sneaking repeatedly back in to LGF with sock puppet accounts, stealing large amounts of content from LGF and posting it at their blog, and even threatening my life on several occasions. The stalker blog has also had comments posted with threats against President Obama. Their web host once shut the site down for a short period, when their craziness got so bad it couldn’t be ignored. They now use a web host in another country with looser standards about acceptable behavior.

Those are the people I “outed,” and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. But I did not do it with PayPal information.

Second: “Ace of Spades” also claims that I tried to hog all the glory for the Dan Rather incident, another claim that is 100% false. I went out of my way to share credit with everyone else who helped move the story, over and over and over. In point of fact, my very first post about the Dan Rather documents gives full credit to Free Republic and Powerline. I’ve done this repeatedly throughout the years, and I have never claimed all the credit for myself.

The right wing blogosphere is inventing a weird series of alternate reality myths about me, based on blatant lies by deranged people, trying to literally destroy my reputation and my income. Stone the unfaithful monkey!

Being a party man in this case means that you'll criticize the party in an attempt to reform it, but you're not going to leave it. It also means that when the time comes to actually donate and vote, you give the money and votes to your party.

The blogosphere is big, but the more specialized the subject, the smaller will be the group of active bloggers. We usually mention where we first saw some bit of material. It's not only courteous, it encourages reciprocal behavior. Genuine scoops are rare, and creeps who steal material without attribution are also rare.

I went and read that article over at AOS, and he/she certainly makes a lot of claims without backing anything up with facts or links or some something more than what appears to be his spin on the issues. Makes him look really weak... I hope his readers recognize this.

Read the comments to the article. His readers are taking turns shitting on LGF and Charles and trading high-fives. This isn't something that just came out of the blue, these assholes have been harboring this grudge for a long time now, pissed off that LGF isn't there helping to lead the ODS charge. That facts and logic are winning out over conspiracy theories and a drive to paint Obama as the anti-Christ. Basically the Right has become every bit as noxious and asinine as the Left was during the Bush years.

I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I'm not.

It is packet routing information...Each Internet packet has a header to direct it properly to the right server.. If you are sending hundreds of packets the reason they all get home is because of the header

Top US senators: Obama, stand by Israel


WASHINGTON – The top two US senators are urging President Barack Obama to stand by Israel in the face of recent global pressure following the lethal raid on the Gaza-bound Marmara ship.

Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote a letter to the President, urging him to show strong support for Israel in international bodies, insist on the Jewish State's right for self-defense, and look into the terror connections of the Turkish organization that led the violent Gaza sail.

Hopefully, this puts paid to any idea that Obama is going to OK a UN dominated investigation. He didn't favor that anyway, but hopefully now people will stop speculating.

The progs running San Francisco offered a resolution the other day...

Two San Francisco Supervisors are proposing a non-binding resolution condemning the Israeli military's actions on a Gaza bound boat that left 9 pro-Palestinian activists dead.

But some members of the board don't want to take sides.

The non binding resolution was introduced by Supervisors John Avalos and Sophie Maxwell after pro-Palestinian activists showed up at this week's meeting and urged the Board to take a stand against Israel.

“I request the Board of Supervisors adopt a resolution expressing the sadness and outrage over the action of the Israeli military and government,” said Avalos.

The resolution condemns Israel's attack on the Freedom Flotilla that resulted in the death of at least nine people and urges the President to seek an end to the Gaza boycott. Supervisor Sean Elsbernd wants no part of it.

“The U.N., I don’t think has even figured out what exactly has happened, but the Board of Supervisors is going to? This is a little bit beyond our scope,” said Elsbernd.

Other supervisors are actively avoiding comment wishing that the resolution would just go away and angry that they're being asked to take sides in a matter far afield from their legislative reach.

He's trying to take the iron out of the glove, believing like many of Bush's critics that the reason America faces so much animosity is not due to differences in ideology, but due to anger over America's past "misdeeds" and fear of future ones.

Or, long story short, he thinks that the opposite to being Bush is being a pushover.

So when Helen Thomas suggested that the Israelis should leave their country and “go home” to Poland and Germany, this was not some obscure, eccentric anti-Semite, but a liberal insider who has come to enjoy iconic status and a sense of exemption from criticism.

Note that Ms. Thomas did not call for just a West Bank free of Jews. And she did not just wish for the elimination of the nation of Israel itself. Rather, Thomas envisions the departure of Israelis to the sites of the major death camps seven decades ago where six million Jews were gassed.

Turkey’s role in aiding and abetting the flotilla, and its subsequent anti-Israeli outbursts, were excessive even by the often sick standards of the Middle East — but not exactly new. Personally, I see Obama trying to play up the "Not-Bush" angle, thinking that "building bridges" and "hitting the reset button" means overturning everything that Bush accomplished and refraining from utilizing the methods he did to create and cement past alliances. He's trying to take the iron out of the glove, believing like many of Bush's critics that the reason America faces so much animosity is not due to differences in ideology, but due to anger over America's past "misdeeds" and fear of future ones.

Or, long story short, he thinks that the opposite to being Bush is being a pushover.

I'd argue that goons like Jones were the more visible and more immediate threat before this Gaza Flotilla event. Jones' entryism into more respectable conservative organs threatens to turn the GOP into a loony bin. But this issue actually helps as it gives the great majority of the right something to agree on while silencing the worst of the crazies. It also puts the left on the defensive.

Its quite true. I dont care much what they call their street, as long as they don't try to kill me. But street names are always meant to reflect part of history, which reflects on a country identity and often shows what kind of an education the kids get. So it is worrying in a way.

I think Alex Jones is precisely a huge part of the problem. The return of the Birch Society, Glenn Beck and Ron Paul means that the right doesn't care much about Israel anymore. Popular conservative sites like Drudge frequently highlight and link to Alex Jones and conservatives don't seem to mind. Big Journalism linked to LGF on the Reuters story, resulting in maybe 200 clicks. Hot Air had a thread about the story which only received 100 comments. They just aren't that interested anymore and whacky libertarian philosophy is a huge part of the problem.

Yes. I was kind of hoping you were older (just for this purpose though :) ). Medicare kicks in at 65. There are other eligibility conditions, but I'm not familiar with them.

Under Obamacare, you would not be forced to put in 1,000 hours before getting coverage. That's one thing that it improves.

I prefer having to work for my benefits, I don't like handouts... you know that, everyone here knows that... it's not a perfect position but I try to stick to it as much as I can... and giving is more important to me than receiving... a fact that you are also personally aware of.

So, I find nothing wrong or medieval with the arrangement that Kroger has... most retail don't give half that much for part time employees... check out Walmart.

We also have a matched retirement funds for part timers. In general, Kroger treats part timers much better than common practice in retail.

I'm not saying that satisfies everyone (or you), but I know what I signed on to... if I didn't agree with it, I didn't have to go to work for them.

I've never seen people so charged up about this issue and I couldn't be happier about it. Republicans should pretty much not say anything else from now until November, and then again until 2012. It's a nice fantasy, just like Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

I respectfully disagree. IMHO:

1. There certainly is a tremendous dissatisfaction with not just the left and Democratic party but also the Republican party and their big spending, pro-amnesty views. Simplistically speaking, that is the larger influence on the tea party movement and their backlash, not an embrace of the far right.

2. The center and center/right is solidly pro-Israel.

3. The far right is given a disproportionate amount of attention to their numbers.

4. It is a mistake to conflate a majority of those who are dissatisfied with the direction of our country - both during Bush's big spending days and now particularly under Obama - with the far right.

Fair point. I don't for a minute believe that the US did everything right during the Cold War, or that we didn't bring some of the shit that's fallen on us since on ourselves. But we have to keep in mind that we're looking at this through a modern eye rather than what was going on then. Sometimes intervention and even wholesale overturning the apple cart prevented things from going bad or getting worse. It's all a matter of hindsight being 20/20.

That is simplistic, yes. I don't think that the 'right' and 'left' have a lot of meaning, but reflexively being anti-spending, even when it's pound-foolish but penny-wise, is definitely a trait of the far right.

Most people who are dissatisfied with spending can't actually name anything significant they'd like to see cut, and those that can, usually name things that mark them as far-right libertarians.

2. The center and center/right is solidly pro-Israel.

Depends on how you define it, I guess. A lot of people don't actually care that much about Israel, sadly. They'll respond with support on a poll, but they don't actually know much about the situation. And given that such politicians on the left as Kerry and Weiner have both made very strong pro-Israel statements, I'm not sure why you don't include "center-left" in that as well.

3. The far right is given a disproportionate amount of attention to their numbers.

Their influence is growing. With insane abortion laws cropping up in various states, Rand Paul winning a primary, it's hard to keep claiming the radical right doesn't have a lot of influence.

4. It is a mistake to conflate a majority of those who are dissatisfied with the direction of our country - both during Bush's big spending days and now particularly under Obama - with the far right.

We might wish that were true, but it's not anymore. The Tea Party/Conservative movement (as opposed to actual conservative thinking) is very much the province of the Conservative cult media, which is squarely in the camp of Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, and the Birchers. As far as these people are concerned, Buckley-type conservatives are RINOs. You might prefer to think of them as 'far right', but they are absolutely the core of the current political movement, and what most understand as 'Conservative'. The right wing blogosphere and pundits have disenfranchised Buckley, not the other way around.

1- There are factions inside the Tea Party that are "pro-amnesty" too, including none other than Dick Armey. And, while everybody is against big spending, things get a little more complicated when it's time to decide where to cut spending. This is why the Tea Party doesn't dare suggest specific spending cuts. That is, besides the repeal of ObamaCare -- which won't happen without a 60 seat majority in the Senate, and that will reduce the long term deficit according to CBO projections.

2- The center and center/right have a worse record when it comes to spending than Democrats. The fringe right is credibly committed to cut spending, but they aren't pro-Israel. Both center right and far right deny the influence of human activity in climate change.

3- Depending on what "far right" means, this may or may not be right. The anti-science views coming from the right have had a lot to say regarding the direction of our country lately.

4- Who's conflating?

With so much room in the blogosphere for real diversity and differences of opinion it is an absolute travesty that some people will undermine the platform on which they stand.

Take Charles to task for his ideas. Take him to task for his opinions. Disagree vehemently with his politics or debate the impact of global warming over the next 50 years.

LGF has proved to be a foundation in the world of blogging. The community here is like few others online. There are smart readers and opinions that span a spectrum. Scores of other blogs that span the political and ideological spectrum were started because of LGF.

That LGF and CJ have become such an object of obsession and vitriol does not diminish LGF or CJ. Those who make a point of making it personal are shooting the messenger because they can't diminish the message and no amount of personal criticism will change that truth.

Too many bloggers and others have painted themselves into a corner because they worked themselves into a frenzy and got aboard an overloaded bandwagon without thinking things things through (this applies across the board). The recent ugly knee jerk treatment of LGF by those on the right and left are testament to that.

Those are called character scars.

But in the 1930s Germany was called Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union was doing just swell, Cuba had a de facto ruler by the name of Batista, Israel did not exist and China was anything but a communist country. So, I don't know how relevant it is to a debate about Israeli policies taking place between 60 and 80 years later.

Not that the Sinti are treated that well in parts of today's Europe either, but forced sterilisations isn't really on the agenda in Sweden anymore. Europe has evolved.

The problem is centered around Sweden and Denmark, I believe.

The numbers are controversial, but in fact there is a higher incidence of crime among immigrant populations (that is true in most places).

A bit of both, really. The statistics you are thinking about relate to socalled overfallsvoldtekter (meaning someone is literally attacked and raped "out in the open", excluding date-rapes, rapes where the perp was in a relation to the victim, etc). There were 41 cases like that in Oslo, and in those cases the perps reported - but not necessarily caught - have been described as "of non-Western origin". In a number of cases, serial rapists were or were probably behind the crime. If you're looking at the total number of rapes, however, the figures are different.

Yeah I don't buy that either. The perverts name appeared first on the ballot and the establishment candidate wasn't apparently that well known either. At the very least though, if a poison pill candidate was given money to insert himself into the Dem primary by a GOP operative that should come out as part of the context. If that is what happened then it would be fairer to simply let Demint run unopposed than let this asshole drag down the entire slate of dem candidates across the state. But elections aren't about fair. Still it would be nice to know who exactly gave money to a broke, unemployed man suspected of exposing himself to a child.

You're right to do so. Nativism Wilders-style did a disturbingly good election in the Netherlands.

But at least it looks like Vlaams Belang might lose support in the Belgian elections tomorrow. And I don't think the Sweden "Democrats" will do very well in the Swedish election this fall either.

I think "a rising tide of fascist sentiment" in Europe is an exaggeration. Nobody stands Berlusconi, but the Charter of Fundamental rights hasn't been violated yet to my knowledge in Italy. And the EU doesn't exactly have the authority to just tell its member nations what to do in these cases...

In February this year the Prefect of Rome, in his capacity as special commissioner for the Roma "emergency", issued new rules regulating life in the region's seven officially designated camps. The camps are to be gated, under police supervision. Though residence is to be temporary, as a prelude to further "integration", no indication is given of where those who have to leave, or are thrown out of the camps because they do not qualify, are expected to go. Milan's mayor has announced similar rules, including camp gates to be locked at 10pm. Protest has been muted.


Ghettoization, combined with laws that allow Roma children to be taken from their mothers because their living situation is deemed dangerous to the child-- a living situation created by the state in the first place.

By the way, just so you can understand my vehemence on this issue: my fiancée is from Roma stock, and I feel that very, very little attention is ever paid to the Roma, and a lot of excuses for their ill-treatment are made. Forgive me if I seem hostile; I don't mean to be, I'm just frustrated.

How on earth does that make it a net minus? Why on earth is 'support' for Israel more important than good science?

If we really want to protect Israel, we need to stop global warming. If we really want to stop global warming, we need to end the anti-science lunacy here in the United States, and become the world leader in renewable energy that we should be.

Instead, we have GOP leaders denying that global warming is occurring.

Israel can survive the fucked-up situation that its in. It can survive the lack of support from Europe. It cannot survive unchecked global warming.

It is true that they will be affected hard by AGW. Indeed, even now with water problems they have enormous ecological problems.

Yet I suspect that they have bigger fish to fry before the land is left essentially uninhabitable.

Yes, that's what I mean. Even good people like yourself don't really know what's going on, and what's been going on. It's the eternal Catch-22: Roma are prevented from getting good educations and kept economically ghettoized, which means a lot of them turn to crime, begging or other highly-visible malfeasances that makes it all the easier for ordinary people to support terrible measures against them, on the grounds that they're all thieves and beggars.

Now I've angried up my blood. So that I don't accidentally say anything overly harsh, I'm going to go chill with my cats for a bit. It's a beautiful day here in San Francisco.

The NCDC report should come out next week, maybe Monday. Odds are looking good that 2010 will be the warmest year on record.

There is also the conflict that thier migratory lifestyle puts their kids at a disadvantage as it is not consistent with the modern European/American system of staying in one place to obtain an education.

And once again, we face the old conundrum of socially integrating while maintaining some ethnic identity. These are not matters that can be solved by any formulaic approach.

Hey, thanks for asking. No, not yet. Got fuel to the rail, so it ain't the fuel pump. Did notice a tiny crack on the dist. cap last night after the convo here, though. That may be the cause of the intermittent stalls and non starts.

Pulled the plugs last night and cleaned them. Gonna gap 'em and check for spark again later today.

Check the spark when it is cold and working versus when it is warm and not working. You can have "spark", but sometimes it isn't sparky enough. Get some starting fluid, WD40, or some gas in a small squirt bottle.When it warms up and fails, give it some fuel and see if you can get it to cough.
Some systems have a different fuel path for "warming up" than for "running".

I have a feeling of deja vu. It was said before that Meir Dagan, The head of the Mossad, have reached an agreement with the Saudis about using their airspace if needed. I think it was published in the London Times back then as well.
