‘Ace of Spades’ and Right Wing Blogosphere ‘Ethics’

Blogosphere • Views: 30,384

In his feverish rush to smear LGF by any means possible, wingnut hateblogger Ace of Spades makes an accusation. (Amid a whole bunch of outright lies.)

I have to say this again: Charles Johnson had a bad reputation, even when he was nominally on the right, for simply stealing other bloggers’ finds. I really should contact one of the people ripped off by him to get him to write a post on this.

Well, this is very curious, because there’s a story behind this one that doesn’t end well for Ace of Spades.

Back in March of 2008, Steve Gilbert of the blog Sweetness and Light publicly accused me of stealing one of his stories — which I absolutely did not do. When I wrote to him and explained where I had gotten the story (readers tipped me to it, as often happens), he refused to believe me and threatened to “ruin my reputation” with other bloggers.

So I preemptively wrote emails to several other bloggers, including Ace of Spades, to explain the situation before Steve Gilbert could poison the well with false accusations. This is what I wrote:

… by the way, Steve Gilbert is tossing around some ridiculous threats to “ruin my reputation,” because he’s convinced that I stole a post of his — and it’s completely untrue. I never read his post, all the info came from LGF readers, and I can easily prove it if I have to.

Just in case he emails you about it.

CJ

And here’s the reply from Ace of Spades, openly admitting that he feels no compunction at all about stealing posts from Mr. Gilbert:

… For reasons I won’t bother you with I do not link him and if he has a good story or video I will swipe the link without crediting him.

I have reasons. He’s blackballed from my site, forever.

This is the kind of person who represents the right wing blogosphere: a rank hypocrite, who accuses others of the unethical acts he performs himself.

And because lying creeps like Ace of Spades will undoubtedly now try to claim I’m faking this, here are the full headers of the email, which I will supply to anyone who requests it.

oh. Well. For reasons I won’t bother you with I do not link him and if he
has a good story or video I will swipe the link without crediting him.

I have reasons. He’s blackballed from my site, forever.

Two more points that probably should be answered, among all the shameless lies in “Ace of Spades’s” post.

First: “Ace of Spades” says that I used PayPal donation information to out the people at the stalker blog (a blog composed of people who were banned from LGF for various reasons, including supporting genocide among other lovely concepts).

This is a deliberate lie; they’re spreading the lie to try to damage my income from donations. I have never revealed information from PayPal, and I never will.

In fact, the stalkers even filed a complaint with PayPal last year to try to get my account shut down; PayPal dismissed the complaint as unfounded. Which it is.

All information that I used to identify these creepy obsessed individuals came from publicly available sources on the Internet, or from people who had the decency to inform me about them. Period. Any information you share with LGF through PayPal is absolutely kept private.

And what they fail to tell you is the reason why I outed these people — because they were sneaking repeatedly back in to LGF with sock puppet accounts, stealing large amounts of content from LGF and posting it at their blog, and even threatening my life on several occasions. The stalker blog has also had comments posted with threats against President Obama. Their web host once shut the site down for a short period, when their craziness got so bad it couldn’t be ignored. They now use a web host in another country with looser standards about acceptable behavior.

Those are the people I “outed,” and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. But I did not do it with PayPal information.

Second: “Ace of Spades” also claims that I tried to hog all the glory for the Dan Rather incident, another claim that is 100% false. I went out of my way to share credit with everyone else who helped move the story, over and over and over. In point of fact, my very first post about the Dan Rather documents gives full credit to Free Republic and Powerline. I’ve done this repeatedly throughout the years, and I have never claimed all the credit for myself.

The right wing blogosphere is inventing a weird series of alternate reality myths about me, based on blatant lies by deranged people, trying to literally destroy my reputation and my income. Stone the unfaithful monkey!

Is LGF the only place on the web with Sane Republicans these days? Or am I just not looking hard enough? (Not that I've been looking very hard....)

Yes..We are here.. I emailed Charles my Award for being the Republican of the year.. There was a day you could win that by being a moderate...

What exactly does "being a party man" entail?

You see I'm a democrat so I basically say whatever the hell I want. Trying to get democrats to vote all the same way is like herding cats, and if you don't believe me just look at how Healthcare reform played out under Obama....

And one more point -- this asshole also claims that I tried to hog all the glory for the Dan Rather incident, and that is also absolutely 100% false. I went out of my way to share the credit with everyone else who helped move the story, over and over and over. There are many posts on the subject in which I credit Buckhead at FR for originally noticing the problems, and Powerline for being the place where I learned about it. I've done this repeatedly throughout the years, and I have never claimed all the credit for myself.

Ace of Spades is just flat out lying.

Being a party man in this case means that you'll criticize the party in an attempt to reform it, but you're not going to leave it. It also means that when the time comes to actually donate and vote, you give the money and votes to your party.

This whole thing is weird. Bloggers in a specialized subject area will all pretty much write about the same subjects and the same news. The blogosphere is big, but the more specialized the subject, the smaller will be the group of active bloggers. We usually mention where we first saw some bit of material. It's not only courteous, it encourages reciprocal behavior. Genuine scoops are rare, and creeps who steal material without attribution are also rare.

Read the comments to the article. His readers are taking turns shitting on LGF and Charles and trading high-fives. This isn't something that just came out of the blue, these assholes have been harboring this grudge for a long time now, pissed off that LGF isn't there helping to lead the ODS charge. That facts and logic are winning out over conspiracy theories and a drive to paint Obama as the anti-Christ. A very good article but Mr. Filozof misses one very important point: Obama is a Liberal Socialist. Chistians and Jews are BOTH looked upon as distractions, by Obama and his ilk. Both are to be villified, condemned and if at all possible...eliminated!

Barack Hussein Obama (mmm mmm mmm) has nothing but disdain and disgust for Jews and Israel. Oh, he loves all that Jewish money contributed to support Liberal Socialist Democrats and Liberal Socialist causes, but deep down he despises Jews and Israeli Jews as well. He has made this point over and over and if he could openly say it, he would in a New York minute!

Liberal Socialists, like their National Socialist cousins, have no use for Jews. Never did! Both political systems do however, actively embrace Islam as it is the antithesis of Judaism. Sadly, if Liberal Socialism EVER is able to completly dominate the political landscape in our nation, it will rapidly morph into National Socialism, complete with camps, goon squads and death chambers to accommodate death panels! Socialism ALWAYS does this, and our homegrown Liberal Socialism is no different in the overall scheme of things to come.

That's why Obama supports our contry's mortal enemies and denounces our country's only friend in the Middle East. It's a Jewish thing, that regretably, American Jews are blinded to.

Top US senators: Obama, stand by Israel

WASHINGTON – The top two US senators are urging President Barack Obama to stand by Israel in the face of recent global pressure following the lethal raid on the Gaza-bound Marmara ship.

Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote a letter to the President, urging him to show strong support for Israel in international bodies, insist on the Jewish State's right for self-defense, and look into the terror connections of the Turkish organization that led the violent Gaza sail.

The letter constitutes a clear message to Obama, letting him know that both Democratic and Republican senators are united in their objection to an international probe of the sail, as well as any changes to the Gaza blockade policy.

The top senators will be circulating the letter among the other senators in a move expected to be completed by Wednesday, when the document will be handed over to the president.

Now that's what I call bipartisanship!

Germany Wants Alleged Mossad Agent Turned Over By Polish Police

Germany is seeking the extradition of an alleged Mossad agent, arrested in Poland last week on suspicion of participating in a plot to kill a senior Hamas official in Dubai, a spokesman for the Federal Prosecutor said.

Police in Warsaw on June 4 or June 5 apprehended a man reportedly known as Uri Brodsky, who was taken into custody under a European arrest warrant issued by Germany, spokesman Andreas Christeleit said today by phone from the Karlsruhe-based Federal Prosecutor’s office.

Prosecutors allege that Brodsky used a stay in Germany to help a fellow Mossad agent obtain a German passport to enter Dubai and assist in the murder of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. Al- Mabhouh, a founder of the armed wing of Hamas, was killed in Dubai in January.

Polish police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski in Warsaw said in a telephone interview that he couldn’t immediately confirm or deny the arrest and would first need to make inquiries.

The WhiteHouse specifically said they favor an "Israeli-led" investigation. The claim that they're going to call for an international investigation led by the UN is completely false.

Back in the day, we'd get posts like that here, from the random nutbar who signed on thinking he'd find a ready choir waiting for his preaching. They all pretty much found that we weren't buying what they were selling and either moved on, moderated themselves, or ended up getting circular-filed. But now, when the drive to tar and feather Obama is overriding common sense, these nutbars are finding plenty of converts, people willing to believe anything that paints the man in a bad light. Politics may make for strange bedfellows, but it seems ODS has made for a veritable orgy of stupidity amongst the Far-Right.

Quite Concur.

'Tea party' candidates hurt by lack of organization in movement

The polls hadn't even closed Tuesday when "tea party" activists in Nevada started sniping at one another over whether Sharron Angle, the soon-to-be Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, was the best candidate to bring down Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid.

The national tea party movement has never had a central organization or single leader; in fact, it has boasted the opposite. But Tuesday's primary results provided fresh evidence of the amorphous network's struggle to convert activist anger and energy into winning results. Frustrated and lacking agreement on what to do next, self-identified tea party leaders say the movement may be in danger of breaking apart before it ever really comes together.(...)

I like to think the Tea Party movement started out as people really, honestly angry with the government and fed up with the "answers" they were being given. But along the way, like many such fledgling movements, they got co-opted by people with their own goals and ambitions and turned into yet another "big tent" under which those who were lacking a pulpit and an audience gathered to fleece the ignorant and the naive. It happened with the "anti-war movement," with everybody from MoveOn to ANSWER using Bush-hatred to fleece the useful idiots of their money and gain temporary prominence.

The progs running San Francisco offered a resolution the other day...

Two San Francisco Supervisors are proposing a non-binding resolution condemning the Israeli military's actions on a Gaza bound boat that left 9 pro-Palestinian activists dead.

But some members of the board don't want to take sides.

The non binding resolution was introduced by Supervisors John Avalos and Sophie Maxwell after pro-Palestinian activists showed up at this week's meeting and urged the Board to take a stand against Israel.

I request the Board of Supervisors adopt a resolution expressing the sadness and outrage over the action of the Israeli military and government,” said Avalos.

The resolution condemns Israel's attack on the Freedom Flotilla that resulted in the death of at least nine people and urges the President to seek an end to the Gaza boycott. Supervisor Sean Elsbernd wants no part of it.

“The U.N., I don’t think has even figured out what exactly has happened, but the Board of Supervisors is going to? This is a little bit beyond our scope,” said Elsbernd.

Other supervisors are actively avoiding comment wishing that the resolution would just go away and angry that they're being asked to take sides in a matter far afield from their legislative reach.

Take sides? Wouldn't want to do that!

Personally, I see Obama trying to play up the "Not-Bush" angle, thinking that "building bridges" and "hitting the reset button" means overturning everything that Bush accomplished and refraining from utilizing the methods he did to create and cement past alliances. He's trying to take the iron out of the glove, believing like many of Bush's critics that the reason America faces so much animosity is not due to differences in ideology, but due to anger over America's past "misdeeds" and fear of future ones.

Or, long story short, he thinks that the opposite to being Bush is being a pushover.

On the matter of Israel, here's another good Victor Davis Hanson article on the subject:

Helen Thomas, Turkey, and the Liberation of Israel

It is hard to become much more influential than the doyen of the White House press corps, who is given a ceremonial front-rows seat at press briefings and press conferences. So when Helen Thomas suggested that the Israelis should leave their country and “go home” to Poland and Germany, this was not some obscure, eccentric anti-Semite, but a liberal insider who has come to enjoy iconic status and a sense of exemption from criticism.

Note that Ms. Thomas did not call for just a West Bank free of Jews. And she did not just wish for the elimination of the nation of Israel itself. Rather, Thomas envisions the departure of Israelis to the sites of the major death camps seven decades ago where six million Jews were gassed.

Turkey’s role in aiding and abetting the flotilla, and its subsequent anti-Israeli outbursts, were excessive even by the often sick standards of the Middle East — but not exactly new. State-run Turkish television has aired virulent anti-Semitic dramas like the 2006 Valley of the Wolves, in which a Jewish doctor harvests organs from captured Iraqi civilians. Former Turkish prime minister Necmettin Erbakan once claimed that the Jews had instigated World War I in order to create Israel. Israel, Erbakan further asserted, in full-blown Hitlerian prose, was a “disease” and a “bacteria” that needed to be eradicated. The current prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, talks of sending in the Turkish fleet to confront the Israeli blockade, says he is sick of Israeli lies, and warns that his new Turkey is not “a young and rootless nation,” as Israel presumably is (note the code word “rootless”). So speaks our NATO partner and EU wannabe. This week, in reaction to criticism from the West, Erdogan labeled such concerns “dirty propaganda” — note well, not just propaganda but a “dirty” sort.

Read the whole thing, it's worth it.

re: #116 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

Personally, I see Obama trying to play up the "Not-Bush" angle, thinking that "building bridges" and "hitting the reset button" means overturning everything that Bush accomplished and refraining from utilizing the methods he did to create and cement past alliances. He's trying to take the iron out of the glove, believing like many of Bush's critics that the reason America faces so much animosity is not due to differences in ideology, but due to anger over America's past "misdeeds" and fear of future ones.

Or, long story short, he thinks that the opposite to being Bush is being a pushover.

Good point.
It reminds me when a new coach comes to a team, and want to get rid all the players that were associated with the former coach, just to say "i'll do it my way!"

I don't recall GW Bush ever condemning Palestinians naming streets after terrorists either.

And it's good he didn't. The name of a Palestinian street is a complete nontroversy, and the least of either Israel or the US concerns. We can't have the President issuing a condemnation every time the Palestinians, or the Iranians, or the Cubans, or the Russians, or any other international actors for that matter, name a street after somebody we don't like. Yet you seldom hear a peep from this administration, and sadly, from this blog.

Can you give me an example of 'peeps' from previous administrations about Palestinian incitement? No snark, I'm trying to figure out what Obama can be expected to be doing according to a previously set standard that he is not.

I'd argue that goons like Jones were the more visible and more immediate threat before this Gaza Flotilla event. Jones' entryism into more respectable conservative organs threatens to turn the GOP into a loony bin. But this issue actually helps as it gives the great majority of the right something to agree on while silencing the worst of the crazies. It also puts the left on the defensive.

Its quite true. I dont care much what they call their street, as long as they don't try to kill me. But street names are always meant to reflect part of history, which reflects on a country identity and often shows what kind of an education the kids get. So it is worrying in a way.

So, I find nothing wrong or medieval with the arrangement that Kroger has... most retail don't give half that much for part time employees... check out Walmart.

We also have a matched retirement funds for part timers. In general, Kroger treats part timers much better than common practice in retail.

That if we dismantled the "Military-Industrial Complex" we got going on around the world, we'd have this mountain of money we could funnel into all kinds of social spending and finally be able to give everybody the chicken in every pot and car in every garage they were promised.

I think Alex Jones is precisely a huge part of the problem. The return of the Birch Society, Glenn Beck and Ron Paul means that the right doesn't care much about Israel anymore.

I respectfully disagree. IMHO:

1. There certainly is a tremendous dissatisfaction with not just the left and Democratic party but also the Republican party and their big spending, pro-amnesty views. Simplistically speaking, that is the larger influence on the tea party movement and their backlash, not an embrace of the far right.

2. The center and center/right is solidly pro-Israel.

3. The far right is given a disproportionate amount of attention to their numbers.

4. It is a mistake to conflate a majority of those who are dissatisfied with the direction of our country - both during Bush's big spending days and now particularly under Obama - with the far right.

5. Conservatives threw the likes of Buchanan out. WF Buckley types are far more representative of those on the right than freakazoids like Alex Jones.

There also people who point out that sometimes when we intervene in world affairs, it turns out utter crap, like deposing the democratic leader of Iran and replacing him with the Shah. Or supporting various right-wing dictators over time.

It's not a simple dichotomy.

I, however, wish we had a mutual defense treaty with Israel.

Fair point. I don't for a minute believe that the US did everything right during the Cold War, or that we didn't bring some of the shit that's fallen on us since on ourselves. But we have to keep in mind that we're looking at this through a modern eye rather than what was going on then. Sometimes intervention and even wholesale overturning the apple cart prevented things from going bad or getting worse. It's all a matter of hindsight being 20/20.

They both essentially work out to the same belief: That if the US would take its nose out of other countries business and mind its own, peace would reign supreme. That if we dismantled the "Military-Industrial Complex" we got going on around the world, we'd have this mountain of money we could funnel into all kinds of social spending and finally be able to give everybody the chicken in every pot and car in every garage they were promised.

It's a nice fantasy, just like Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

Simplistically speaking, that is the larger influence on the tea party movement and their backlash, not an embrace of the far right.

That is simplistic, yes. I don't think that the 'right' and 'left' have a lot of meaning, but reflexively being anti-spending, even when it's pound-foolish but penny-wise, is definitely a trait of the far right.

Most people who are dissatisfied with spending can't actually name anything significant they'd like to see cut, and those that can, usually name things that mark them as far-right libertarians.

2. The center and center/right is solidly pro-Israel.

Depends on how you define it, I guess. A lot of people don't actually care that much about Israel, sadly. They'll respond with support on a poll, but they don't actually know much about the situation. And given that such politicians on the left as Kerry and Weiner have both made very strong pro-Israel statements, I'm not sure why you don't include "center-left" in that as well.

3. The far right is given a disproportionate amount of attention to their numbers.

Their influence is growing. With insane abortion laws cropping up in various states, Rand Paul winning a primary, it's hard to keep claiming the radical right doesn't have a lot of influence.

4. It is a mistake to conflate a majority of those who are dissatisfied with the direction of our country - both during Bush's big spending days and now particularly under Obama - with the far right.

How is it a mistake?

5. Conservatives threw the likes of Buchanan out. WF Buckley types are far more representative of those on the right than freakazoids like Alex Jones.

Obama's criticism of building in Jerusalem was unprecedented. Bush never did anything like that, and certainly never so publicly.

[Link: www.americantaskforce.org...]

Condoleezza Rice criticized Israel on Friday for planning to build new homes on occupied land in the Jerusalem area -- a move Palestinians say could wreck a peace process Rice helped launch last week in Washington.

"We are in a time when the goal is to build maximum confidence with the parties and this doesn't help to build confidence," the U.S. Secretary of State said in rare public censure of Washington's closest ally in the Middle East.

At a news conference at NATO in Brussels after she had met Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni, Rice added: "There should not be anything which might prejudge final-status negotiations.

"It's even more important now that we are on the eve of the beginning of the negotiations. I made that position clear."

Rice has to a degree staked her claim to a foreign policy legacy going into the final year of the Bush administration on seeking a settlement of the 60-year-old Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Last week's accord at Annapolis, Maryland, to resume negotiations after a violent, 7-year hiatus came after nearly a year of Middle East shuttle diplomacy by the secretary of state.

Negotiators from both sides are due to meet in Jerusalem on Wednesday for a first round of talks since U.S. President George W. Bush oversaw handshakes on the deal between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Bush, whose presidency has been marked by the war in Iraq, has been criticized by some for previously neglecting the issue.

Disputes over settlements and Jerusalem, which Israel wants as its undivided capital and where Abbas wants East Jerusalem as capital of a Palestinian state, are central to negotiations Bush now hopes can conclude before he steps down in just 13 months.

We might wish that were true, but it's not anymore. The Tea Party/Conservative movement (as opposed to actual conservative thinking) is very much the province of the Conservative cult media, which is squarely in the camp of Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, and the Birchers. As far as these people are concerned, Buckley-type conservatives are RINOs. You might prefer to think of them as 'far right', but they are absolutely the core of the current political movement, and what most understand as 'Conservative'. The right wing blogosphere and pundits have disenfranchised Buckley, not the other way around.

1- There are factions inside the Tea Party that are "pro-amnesty" too, including none other than Dick Armey. And, while everybody is against big spending, things get a little more complicated when it's time to decide where to cut spending. This is why the Tea Party doesn't dare suggest specific spending cuts. That is, besides the repeal of ObamaCare -- which won't happen without a 60 seat majority in the Senate, and that will reduce the long term deficit according to CBO projections.

2- The center and center/right have a worse record when it comes to spending than Democrats. The fringe right is credibly committed to cut spending, but they aren't pro-Israel. Both center right and far right deny the influence of human activity in climate change.

3- Depending on what "far right" means, this may or may not be right. The anti-science views coming from the right have had a lot to say regarding the direction of our country lately.

4- Who's conflating?

5- What about Sarah Palin types? Jim Inhof types? Michelle Bachman types? Beck types? Limbaugh types? William Buckley these people are not.

Yep. This is one reason that European criticism of Jewish treatment of Palestinians is very hard to take. The Roma have been systematically fucked over and are still being fucked over, everywhere in Europe.

Sweden sterilized the mentally ill (very, very loosely defined) between the 30's and 50's too.

Madonna got booed at a concert in Bucharest, for criticizing the way the Roma are treated in Europe.

Yep. I bought her album after she did that.

Then I gave it to someone else, but it's still very good on her. Not many people know about the Roma situation, and, sadly, a lot of people manage to blame the Roma for their own persecution, using language almost identical to that which was used to blame the Jews.

Well, I recall Scoop Jackson as being "The senator from Boeing", and we may disagree about how trashed the neocon brand is. I don't hate Dick Cheney, for instance.

But I'll take it under advisement.

With so much room in the blogosphere for real diversity and differences of opinion it is an absolute travesty that some people will undermine the platform on which they stand.

Take Charles to task for his ideas. Take him to task for his opinions. Disagree vehemently with his politics or debate the impact of global warming over the next 50 years.

LGF has proved to be a foundation in the world of blogging. The community here is like few others online. There are smart readers and opinions that span a spectrum. Scores of other blogs that span the political and ideological spectrum were started because of LGF.

That LGF and CJ have become such an object of obsession and vitriol does not diminish LGF or CJ. Those who make a point of making it personal are shooting the messenger because they can't diminish the message and no amount of personal criticism will change that truth.

Too many bloggers and others have painted themselves into a corner because they worked themselves into a frenzy and got aboard an overloaded bandwagon without thinking things things through (this applies across the board). The recent ugly knee jerk treatment of LGF by those on the right and left are testament to that.

Those are called character scars.

A lovely quote you've found there. Funny thing is, I live in Norway, a country where Obama would probably have been a member of the Conservative party. Our minister of Children, Integration and Equality (some portfolio) - Audun Lysbakken - represents the Socialist Left party, and he is pretty much a Marxist. Not "a Marxist" as in Tea Party newspeak, but a Marxist as in:

The most important criteria for socialism to succeed is the end of private property rights on the means of production. Meaning that the capitalists should have their companies, their offices and their factories confiscated.

(Lysbakken, 2002).

(I have to note that I was a member of the same youth movement as Lysbakken in 2001, and that I wrote some pretty hardcore socialist stuff myself, too. Yet: I left. He stayed).

In spite of having a Marxist minister and a government which by American standards would be considered rather hard left, about the only people that actually believe there are "death camps" in Norway are usually also 911 troofers, often outright anti-Semites and remarkably often fans of Ron Paul.

A White House official told IBD: "This is a draft document, and we will be releasing the final regulation when it is complete. The president made a promise to the American people that if they liked their health care plan, they can keep it. The regulation, when finalized, will uphold that promise."
However, the source conceded: "It is difficult to predict how plans and employers will behave in the coming years, but if plans make changes that negatively impact consumers, then they will lose their grandfather status

What is the problem? Plans that make changes that negatively impact consumers might lose their grandfather status?

The problem is that essentially all the individually sold policies and plans now in existence will founder. How can they survive?

The account below exaggerates the problem so that it can be understood better, but a watered down version of this problem will suffice to ensure a watered down slow demise to these plans. Here's the problem:

The rational play from the consumer side is to go without insurance and pay the fine. The fine is cheaper.

Then, if you do get sick, sick enough that paying cash is problematic, you buy insurance. Health insurance plans had a defense to this scheme up til now; they didn't cover preexisting conditions. But not any more. So they enroll you, and you go straight into the hospital and get your surgery, and then you drop your insurance again.

This is called "adverse selection". Almost everyone actually enrolled in the plan will be very sick, and the plan's costs will far outstrip its premium income. It will fail.

True. But in the 1930s Germany was called Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union was doing just swell, Cuba had a de facto ruler by the name of Batista, Israel did not exist and China was anything but a communist country. So, I don't know how relevant it is to a debate about Israeli policies taking place between 60 and 80 years later.

Not that the Sinti are treated that well in parts of today's Europe either, but forced sterilisations isn't really on the agenda in Sweden anymore. Europe has evolved.

A bit of both, really. The statistics you are thinking about relate to socalled overfallsvoldtekter (meaning someone is literally attacked and raped "out in the open", excluding date-rapes, rapes where the perp was in a relation to the victim, etc). There were 41 cases like that in Oslo, and in those cases the perps reported - but not necessarily caught - have been described as "of non-Western origin". In a number of cases, serial rapists were or were probably behind the crime. If you're looking at the total number of rapes, however, the figures are different.

Couldn't find a solid English source for you right now, but there are lots of Norwegian sources. Here's an article in Aftenposten, the biggest newspaper in Norway: [Link: www.aftenposten.no...]

The Dem accusation is that the GOP got Greene on the ticket, knowing he's got a felony charge he's still got to face, in order to keep DeMint from being challenged come November. They say that the guy being unemployed makes his pulling together the money to get on the ballot, along with the fact that he spent nothing on campaigning, is proof of GOP voter fraud.

perhaps it is true, but it is something that they should have brought up before the votes were cast.

That's why they're demanding an investigation, because they claim there's no way this guy who spent no money on campaigning could have pulled together enough votes to beat the establishment candidate. That this totally unknown candidate's win is proof that the GOP stuffed the ballot box and got him on the ticket, knowing he'll either fail to beat DeMint or he'll be off the ticket/out of office if he gets convicted on the felony charge.

Bump: Peace Jihad

re: #479 NJDhockeyfan

This is alarming if true...

Lebanese Threaten Mass March on Israeli Border

This is an escalation of the Intifada strategy. First to create the situation where Israeli soldiers have to fight using only riot control techniques, any use of firearms, even when attacked with metal pipes, rocks or knives will result in condemnation by the international community. Then these infiltration techniques mount, become a swarm, combined with an intifada type uprising in Israel.

As we saw with the Aid Boat Jihad, 15 Israelis armed with non-lethal weapons can not control 50 peace activists attacking them with metal pipes, knives, stun grenades, Molotov cocktails, bottles, and guns. The Israelis will be have no choice but to use deadly force. The international community, especially the EU, UN and the media, will howl and demonise Israel on cue.

These peace Jihadis are not marching on Israel in order to put flowers in their guns, they are not interested in equal rights, they intend to slit the Jews throats and beat them to death. Eventually. That is the goal in stages. But first the Israelis must be harried, terrorised, demonised, weakened and exhausted on all fronts, political, financial and military.

With all this pressure to delegitimise and harass Israel from all sides. How can they focus their military to fend off missiles and mortars from Hezbollah and Hamas, with their patrons Syria and Iran looming with still greater threats.

The Israeli military, intelligence and government will be too preoccupied with the swarming peace Jihad and answering all the blood libels.

The vile international community and media will be too occupied with fabrications of Israeli war crimes each time the Israelis use minimum force to ward off a beating, knifing, abduction, missile, rocket and mortar attack.

How can a tiny country the size of New Jersey with a Jewish population about half the population of New York City survive against an endless Jihad on all fronts, military media, and political?

Yeah I don't buy that either. The perverts name appeared first on the ballot and the establishment candidate wasn't apparently that well known either. At the very least though, if a poison pill candidate was given money to insert himself into the Dem primary by a GOP operative that should come out as part of the context. If that is what happened then it would be fairer to simply let Demint run unopposed than let this asshole drag down the entire slate of dem candidates across the state. But elections aren't about fair. Still it would be nice to know who exactly gave money to a broke, unemployed man suspected of exposing himself to a child.

Please guys, don't say Europe. There are not such policies in the majority of European countries. It's as if Lebanon decided to adopt some awful policy and people talked about it using the expression "Middle-Easterners".

Ok, this is a specious comparison, since the EU has a Charter of Fundamental Rights. But you get my meaning.

Sure. So where is the condemnation for Italy and Hungary for their blatant violations of that Charter of Fundamental rights for the Romany? And Czechoslovakia?

Where is even an admission of past crimes from the countries in Europe of their treatment of the Roma?

The EU keeps making promises, keeps making studies, but nothing is done. And Hungary and Italy and many other EU countries keep persecuting the Roma.

Forming the EU has given Europe a new political identity, and with that comes new political responsibilities, as well.

You seriously don't think what's been done to the Roma in Italy is a violation of human rights?

[Link: www.guardian.co.uk...]

[Link: www.errc.org...]

In February this year the Prefect of Rome, in his capacity as special commissioner for the Roma "emergency", issued new rules regulating life in the region's seven officially designated camps. The camps are to be gated, under police supervision. Though residence is to be temporary, as a prelude to further "integration", no indication is given of where those who have to leave, or are thrown out of the camps because they do not qualify, are expected to go. Milan's mayor has announced similar rules, including camp gates to be locked at 10pm. Protest has been muted.

Ghettoization, combined with laws that allow Roma children to be taken from their mothers because their living situation is deemed dangerous to the child-- a living situation created by the state in the first place.

By the way, just so you can understand my vehemence on this issue: my fiancée is from Roma stock, and I feel that very, very little attention is ever paid to the Roma, and a lot of excuses for their ill-treatment are made. Forgive me if I seem hostile; I don't mean to be, I'm just frustrated.

But Jobbik in Hungary - for instance - are.

Berlusconi is too into the 18-year-old muffs to give proper attention to being a fascist.

They tend to side against Israel, though, which makes it a net minus for me. I'll be back in a bit.

How on earth does that make it a net minus? Why on earth is 'support' for Israel more important than good science?

If we really want to protect Israel, we need to stop global warming. If we really want to stop global warming, we need to end the anti-science lunacy here in the United States, and become the world leader in renewable energy that we should be.

Instead, we have GOP leaders denying that global warming is occurring.

Israel can survive the fucked-up situation that its in. It can survive the lack of support from Europe. It cannot survive unchecked global warming.

It is true that they will be affected hard by AGW. Indeed, even now with water problems they have enormous ecological problems.

Yet I suspect that they have bigger fish to fry before the land is left essentially uninhabitable.

Yes, that's what I mean. Even good people like yourself don't really know what's going on, and what's been going on. It's the eternal Catch-22: Roma are prevented from getting good educations and kept economically ghettoized, which means a lot of them turn to crime, begging or other highly-visible malfeasances that makes it all the easier for ordinary people to support terrible measures against them, on the grounds that they're all thieves and beggars.

Now I've angried up my blood. So that I don't accidentally say anything overly harsh, I'm going to go chill with my cats for a bit. It's a beautiful day here in San Francisco.

Apologies to anyone I was too brusque with.

Speaking of AGW, according to the latest GISSTEMP analysis, looks like May 2010 was the warmest May on record:

There is also the conflict that thier migratory lifestyle puts their kids at a disadvantage as it is not consistent with the modern European/American system of staying in one place to obtain an education.

And once again, we face the old conundrum of socially integrating while maintaining some ethnic identity. These are not matters that can be solved by any formulaic approach.

Hey, thanks for asking. No, not yet. Got fuel to the rail, so it ain't the fuel pump. Did notice a tiny crack on the dist. cap last night after the convo here, though. That may be the cause of the intermittent stalls and non starts.

Pulled the plugs last night and cleaned them. Gonna gap 'em and check for spark again later today.

re: #503 Slumbering Behemoth

Check the spark when it is cold and working versus when it is warm and not working. You can have "spark", but sometimes it isn't sparky enough. Get some starting fluid, WD40, or some gas in a small squirt bottle. When it warms up and fails, give it some fuel and see if you can get it to cough.
Some systems have a different fuel path for "warming up" than for "running".

Luck to you.

I have a feeling of deja vu. It was said before that Meir Dagan, The head of the Mossad, have reached an agreement with the Saudis about using their airspace if needed. I think it was published in the London Times back then as well.
But the Saudis were very quick to deny then, and very quick to deny now.
