If any of you have never seen the show Party Down, and you have Netflix, go and watch it online. I watched most of the first two seasons (the season two finale isn't online yet) this week. One of the funniest shows in recent tv times.

Doing a google search brings up most links the past two weeks to the usual wingnut sites.

However, the story origination appears to be from June 3 here:

It appears to have been two people from the local Los Angeles NAACP who made that claim. But the national organization didn't seem to take notice.

Reading up on the Gus link regarding the Staten Island mosque issue. Since I grew up there I know more about that environment than most. I find myself somewhat conflicted over the issue. I lived all over the Island during my time there, so I know the dynamics of most of the neighborhoods. Midland Beach is a deeply Italian Catholic neighborhood and my own experience was, when I lived there, deeply racist. But that's also true of many neighborhoods across the island. Again, too many stories to tell. And yet there are legitimate reasons for the folks in the neighborhood to be pissed off, both at the Catholic church who is selling the property, and local officials who, to a person, are being cowards. My conflict in this is based in part on the fact that SI'ers were disproportionately effected by 9/11. Every funeral home was packed for months after the attacks (I know, I asked them when I was there just afterward). The emotion there still runs high. I don't have a problem with a mosque on SI. I used to live in a Muslim neighborhood there. This is an issue that strikes close to home as you can imagine.

Here is what I think has gone on, from a preliminary search:

Two people affiliated with the Los Angeles branch of the NAACP held a news conference to complain about the card. Whatever chip they have on their shoulder, it looks a bit silly from an outsider's perspective. Anyway, KTLA covered it, provided some video. That was on June 3. It was picked up a few other legit news outlets

From there thousands of sites/bloggers who have a chip on their shoulder about the NAACP try to make hay out of the situation, over the following 9 days. From ProteinWisdom to HotAir, and finally to Fox (yesterday), covering this as some sort of "news."

Even searching the LA NAACP website brings up nothing, and as I said above neither does the national NAACP site. Go ahead and double check me - I may have missed something.

My preliminary conclusion is that what was a minor bit of confusion/silliness/poor-thinking by a couple of misguided souls turns out to be a roast-the-Black-organization by the wingnut-o-sphere.

1st Amendment and the Establishment Clause plus there are already mosques in Staten Island.

If we keep moving "ground zero" further out it will never end because I'm sure many would find a reason to justify their objection to building a mosque -- which of course they already do.

Yes, it does indeed bring attention to the fact that people are insanely over-the-top sensitive. It might not be a big, national story, but it is a poignant anecdote to a culture overrun by political correctness.

Glad you're still online Gus. Obviously this story hits close to home for me. And you're right, the 1st Amendment and the Establishment Clause is fundamental to what it means to be American. I lived down the street from an Islamic center on SI years ago and had no problem with that. The opposition in this case is based, at least in part, on fear of any "other." Sadly, the folks reacting this way don't remember how their own ancestors were treated exactly the same way generations ago. Some things never change.

Okay, other things. My boss (sort of my boss - as a contractor I have different people I report to, but she is the one I work most closely with) came to my festival gig today. I get along with her most of the time, but she's not someone I would want to hang out with.

She came with her husband and two little kids (2 and 4 years old) and she was so different from at the office. She's not always uptight at work, and we get along, but today she was just really easygoing and fun. It was nice to see her, and her kids are really cute (and they dug our set.)

Yeah, I have in the past and some of my current coworkers have come out to see my band. I'm still trying to get the cute redhead chick I work with to come see us some time.

One nice thing about today is that my boss new that I needed to take off soon and told me so, but asked me if I could come over and talk to her kids because they liked our music so much. I told her to piss off because I had to go.

Not really. I went over and spent a few minutes with the kids (and told the older one she should get a harmonica soon), and that was really nice.

I saw so much blatant racism growing up that it sensitized me to the code words that try to hide the obvious ever since. I'm actually grateful for being exposed to it so early on while also being exposed to other communities. I saw the dichotomy before my eyes and it was painfully illuminating. I mentioned it before here, but I kept running into Steven Segal in a bar (Rebecca's, designed by Frank Gehry) in Venice West. As a longtime expat on a short visit to California, I had no idea who the hell he was - other than he was a cool-looking dude with a ponytail and an interesting face, always with a small group of people drinking at the bar. I actually figured him for a European.

Anyway, we began to notice each other's presence and one night he sent over a drink. It was a nice gesture, given the context, and since we were apparently on the same wavelength, I didn't feel there was anything equivocal about it. In other words, I didn't feel like the dude was making a move on me.

Being a reserved type, I just thanked him with a nod and went on with my evening at the bar of Rebecca's. He looked like he had enough drinking buddies as it was.

And that's my Steven Segal story.

What I really regret is Rebecca's, which eventually moved up to 6th Street in Santa Monica and lost its edge - as I have mine over the years.

I've read about that also.

I've got a large wicker basket with a kind of domed cage-like cover (meant for transporting kittens or puppies) that I use to take the 'Zilla with me down to the various neighborhood cafés when I have a beer or an espresso and a cigar. I do this for practical reasons, since my places faces north and he doesn't get the daily sun he should be getting - but I'm both amazed and gratified at how many people stop to say hello and chat with me when they see him. Parisians are notoriously distant, but Poopzilla radiates a kind of charisma that immediately breaks down the barriers. For one thing, he's totally there, whether he's checking out the parade of cars and passers-by on the street or just snoozing with a wing spread way out to catch even more sun. He's not afraid of people, and after a moment of sizing them up, will let them stroke his head or lightly scritch him under his beak. Needless to say, kids just love this.

A friend once said that I saved Poopzilla's ass when I picked him up as a baby and brought him home. I replied that I felt that he had saved mine. He did, and he has. What a blessing.

I don't know where you were in China, but about ten or twelve years ago, I got this intense feeling about Shanghai and considered picking up and moving over there. As I remember, this was just about the time that the city was waking up after the long colonial slumber - although no one really knew at the time what an amazing place it was going to become.

I rather regret not being there - I lived for several years in southeast Asia and always got on particularly well with the Chinese, who often ran the local businesses. I had a real affinity for them, and it appeared to be reciprocal. I loved their (at least what I took to be) their dry sense of humor and quiet irony: they were expats like me, except that their families had been there for hundreds of years, through good times and bad. They had seen it all, and could still laugh about life....

This might sound sick, but we're probably lucky they decided to turn ineptly to jihad and get busted. This guy is definitely the type to shoot up or bomb his school even if he hadn't turned jihadi.

Like I said, Columbine. Which is also probably as good a place as any to remind people that one of the original plans of the Columbine killers was to hijack a plane and fly it into the WTC.

In the article linked above the FBI concluded that Eric Harris was a psychopath and was capable of far more damage than they achieved (indeed, they intended the slaughter to be much worse but their pipe bombs failed: they intended to wait in the parking lot til the bombs went off, shoot down the people who survived the bombing as they fled, and murder all law enforcement and emergency personnel who responded.) The FBI said that as bad as Columbine was, in a few years Harris would have been much more dangerous and capable of god knows what.

If these two guys from Jersey hadn't gotten the attention of DHS and had confined their fuckwittery to us shores, who knows what they could have gotten away with.

I think the Atlantic is spot-on about using their ineptness as propaganda, though. The more they're reviled and mocked rather than feared, the less 'noble' their cause and actions seem to those who might otherwise be inspired or recruited.

Here is what I think has gone on, from a preliminary search:

Two people affiliated with the Los Angeles branch of the NAACP held a news conference to complain about the card. Whatever chip they have on their shoulder, it looks a bit silly from an outsider's perspective. Anyway, KTLA covered it, provided some video. That was on June 3. It was picked up a few other legit news outlets

From there thousands of sites/bloggers who have a chip on their shoulder about the NAACP try to make hay out of the situation, over the following 9 days. From ProteinWisdom to HotAir, and finally to Fox (yesterday), covering this as some sort of "news."

Even searching the LA NAACP website brings up nothing, and as I said above neither does the national NAACP site. Go ahead and double check me - I may have missed something.

My preliminary conclusion is that what was a minor bit of confusion/silliness/poor-thinking by a couple of misguided souls turns out to be a roast-the-Black-organization by the wingnut-o-sphere.

2. Don't protect stupidity and general craziness just because you might happen to like the organization. There isn't any defense for this that doesn't smell of partisanship. I think the Atlantic is spot-on about using their ineptness as propaganda, though. The more they're reviled and mocked rather than feared, the less 'noble' their cause and actions seem to those who might otherwise be inspired or recruited.
This doesn't mean stepping down on law enforcement or security in any way, of course.

My guess is that this is deliberate--she's going to ineptly force them to close her account by refusing to comply with their TOS or go through the appeal process-- thus ensuring lots of foamy posts to come from her, lots of attention from her fellow haters in the wingnutsphere and an outrageous outrage.

Instead of say, contacting paypal and appealing, she's urging people to attack paypal. some of that response is just Pammy being Pammy (e.g., stupid, ragefilled, prone to incitement and shrieking first asking questions later), but I'm certain some of it is another shriek for attention. The funny thing is that all her supporters are going to get from Paypal is a form letter. This is what I got from them when I sent them an e-mail supporting their decision.

Right, she has til the 17th to comply with the letter. So far she isn't complying or showing the signs of a normal person-- which would be to sign their affadavit, lodge an appeal, etc..
PayPal says 'the matter will escalate' after the 17th, meaning 'limitation or closure of your account'.

My guess is that Pammy is just going to keep posting about it rather than, you know, complying or acting like a normal person. I expect she'll keep hysterically blogging about it instead.
