I wonder how the Prop 8 closing arguments are going right now. It's too bad they didn't allow this trial to be televised. But that would have hurt the defense as their witnesses didn't want to testify publicly...(nobody likes looking like a bigot on TV).

Migrant traffic shuts nature area
Security concerns cited for Buenos Aires border land

The Arizona Republic
Oct. 13, 2006

For the second time, protected land on Arizona's border with Mexico has closed to the public because of security concerns surrounding illegal immigration.

Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge closed 3,500 acres earlier this month, officials there announced this week.

Violence against immigrants and law enforcement officers is increasing on the refuge, which shares a 5.5-mile border with Mexico. The Border Patrol, National Guard and federal law enforcement officers stationed there have stepped up efforts in response. A metal vehicle barrier on the border is under construction.

As a result, "it's just not a good place for people to be recreating right now," refuge manager Mitch Ellis said. "It's a crazy place to be."

Emergency closures at wildlife refuges are usually prompted by natural disasters like floods and last 30 days or less. But since the conditions that prompted the Buenos Aires closure show no signs of improving, the land will be indefinitely inaccessible to the public.

Originally established as a haven for the meek-mannered masked bobwhite quail, the 118,000-acre refuge has been ravaged by illegal-immigrant traffic in recent years.

More than 250,000 illegal immigrants entered the refuge in 2004 and 2005. Their footsteps and vehicles have cut more than 1,300 miles of trails through the native grassland, some of which could take more than a century to recover. The landscape is dotted with rusting, abandoned vehicles and tons of clothing and trash.

More than 85 percent of land along Arizona's border with Mexico is federal land. Buenos Aires is the second public space that has had to close because of problems with illegal immigration.

About one-third of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument remains closed to the public for security reasons since a park ranger was killed by a drug smuggler there in 2002.

Those familiar with the refuge said the closure is a sad but necessary step.

"We hate to see areas get closed, but we have such a problem close to the border that we don't want to put our hunters' lives in danger," said Gabriel Paz, an officer with the Arizona Game and Fish Department and organizer of a volunteer group that picks up trash at the refuge.

In fact, even Allahpundit mentioned that this area has been closed for a while and remained close since 2006 and as the article notes:

Emergency closures at wildlife refuges are usually prompted by natural disasters like floods and last 30 days or less. But since the conditions that prompted the Buenos Aires closure show no signs of improving, the land will be indefinitely inaccessible to the public.

First built in 1792, this home has been extensively remodeled many times: after a fire in 1812, with new plumbing in 1912, new balconies in 1948 and an historic makeover in 1961.

With all the latest in security features as well as convenience. Hold full briefings for the press indoors or outside in a lovely rose garden. Need some privacy? Nap time has never been so secure as in your own private war room.

43 different residents over the years ( some longer than others ) each leaving a distinctive mark and some lovely furniture. Great for a young family - play football on the lawn or hold a wedding in the state dining room.

Walking distance to the office. Comes fully furnished with added amenities including limo fleet, helicopter, private jet and intense pubic interest.

Man killed by stray dogs he cared for

An Ohio man was killed by the dogs he and his father had taken in as strays and cared for, police said.

Michael Kywa found the body of his son, Michael Winters, 30, early Tuesday afternoon in the driveway of their house in Henrietta in Lorain County, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Coroner Paul Matus said there were hundreds of bites on the body and Winters' clothes had been ripped to shreds.

"When dogs develop a pack mentality, they can launch an attack on someone," Matus said.

I've seen Buddy only twice...BB maybe 6-8 times, but never together...I'm a Delta nut, so it's always very special for me...and btw one of the times I saw Buddy was at his club, Legends, in Chicago...I have a lot of friends up your way...one hell of a lot of music venues in that region...I love to visit up there

I saw Diamond Tooth Mary a few times in Miami at a small, very old club called Tobacco Road. I never got to see Muddy Waters before he passed, but he used to play in that bar too and there's pics of him everywhere. A friend of mine used to play in the house band so I was there most weekends.

We weren't, and still aren't, Lucas fans.
Muhahahahaha!

We played an early Imperial setting, so Luke and Leia were only about 8 when we started. This was pre-Phantom Menace, so Lucas hadn't fucked up the story yet.

I don't know for sure that installing Flash Player was the problem -- but my system got very flaky immediately after installing Flash Player. Bugs in the installer, maybe.

A 90-year-old maritime law gets BP off the hook for workers killed on the Deepwater rig.

That's because the Deepwater rig is legally considered an oceangoing vessel and was more three nautical miles offshore at the time of the accident. As a result, the families of the dead workers can only sue BP and its contractors under a 90-year-old maritime law, the Death on the High Seas Act, which severely limits liability. In some cases, BP could get away with shelling out sums as paltry as $1,000.

Gordon Jones, a mud engineer killed on the Deepwater rig, left behind a pregnant wife who had quit her job to stay home with their 2-year-old son. But thanks to DOHSA, the most BP could owe them is the equivalent of Gordon's salary over his working life, minus what he would have paid out in taxes and personal expenses. So if Gordon made $60,000 a year for the next 30 years, BP could owe the family less than a million dollars.

The math works out even worse for workers without dependents. Jones' brother Chris testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that one of the other Deepwater workers who was killed was single and childless. That means his family would only be entitled to recover funeral expenses under DOHSA. But because his body was never recovered after the explosion, the funeral costs will be lower. BP could end up paying his family as little as $1,000 for their loss.

Look for BP to pay out a decent settlement to the families of the victims, but nothing super-huge. They could shell out a few million to each family to settle out of court which would save them another major PR hit if they were to fight the families.

But a senior Israeli official said on condition of anonymity that "the IHH charity is considered as criminal in Israel because it supports terrorism and has close links with Hamas," the Islamist rulers of Gaza.

Former professor charged in brother's death 24 years ago

A former Alabama university professor accused of gunning down three colleagues in February was indicted in Massachusetts on Wednesday in the 1986 shooting death of her brother.

Amy Bishop was charged with first-degree murder in the killing of her brother, Seth Bishop, Norfolk District Attorney William Keating said.

The brother's death originally was ruled an accident. His death came under renewed scrutiny after Amy Bishop was arrested February 12 in a shooting rampage at a biology faculty meeting at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

At the time of the 1986 killing, Bishop, who was 21, told authorities she had asked for her 18-year-old brother's help unloading a shotgun when it accidentally discharged.

Anyone seen a very little known film called "Agora" it is a dramatization of the story of Hypatia the "last librarian" of Alexandria. It was also the top grossing film in Spain for 2009.

It covers the rise of the "Christian" zealots who sacked and burned every center of knowledge and library in the old roman empire, (The advent of the "dark ages"). They also dragged Hypatia naked through the streets and then burned her body after finding her guilty of seduction by witchcraft (although most historians agree that hypatia was in fact a virgin). Yeah the film plays fast and loose with history a little bit for dramas sake, but it basically portrays an accurate message.

I wonder if people will look back in history a thousand years from now and make a similar story about the U.S. and the rise of partisan zealotry here?

(watch the film if you can find it, I recommend it highly)

The federal government would have “absolute power” to shut down the Internet under the terms of a new US Senate bill being pushed by Joe Lieberman, legislation which would hand President Obama a figurative “kill switch” to seize control of the world wide web in response to a Homeland Security directive.

SNIP

Similar legislation aimed at imposing Chinese-style censorship of the Internet and giving the state the power to shut down networks has already been passed globally, including in the UK, New Zealand and Australia.

We have extensively covered efforts to scrap the internet as we know it and move toward a greatly restricted “internet 2″ system. Handing government the power to control the Internet would only be the first step towards this system, whereby individual ID’s and government permission would be required simply to operate a website.

My wife dragged me back into WoW because "none of the other healers are worth a damn."

I'm ditching it when Dark Millenium comes out.

I wish people would realize how shitty that game is.

I like the ride to 80, but then you just sit there and farm, farm, farm.

Was just at the Blizzard site,it says D2 will run on Vista but requires local admin access, have to reinstall and try that,it wouldn't run with Win XP compatability mode, never tried admin.

I didn't do it so I can't say, but when I get home, I will ask Mr. Moon if you like. It plays fine now on his Vista (I think.... hehe)

What server you on? We go back and forth from EQ to WoW. Actually, I'm in a gaming group with a bunch of folks and I think they're playing Star Wars now.

re: #138 ausador

Ya think Ron Paul is going to burn the Library of Congress?

I wonder if people will look back in history a thousand years from now and make a similar story about the U.S. and the rise of partisan zealotry here?

(watch the film if you can find it, I recommend it highly)

Had 9 80s hordeside Baelgun but they're retired for now, I'm sticking with one Draenai Shaman on Kilrogg for Alliance.

re: #122 Mad Al-Jaffee

Sad to say, I've never seen any of them live. (Timing, money, distance....mostly timing, dammit.) I did, however, get to meet Muddy when he did an in-store appearance for a record store at which I worked, just after he had recorded "Hard Again" with Johnny Winter. What an extraordinary fellow. He seemed genuinely humbled and grateful for all these young people whose admiration was so evident and heartfelt. Signed everything that anybody asked, smiled the whole time. As decent a guy as I've ever encountered.

Cripes, I'm trying to remember the server...One of real popular ones.

We used to do the battlegrounds as Horde which was a ton of fun, but it got really competitive and it was taking over my life so I had to stop

I suck at being a geek. My geek meter is like a 5. I've never gotten over level 45 and I only play hunters. Mr. Moon gets really pissed at me :p I just lose interest and go on to something else. Draenais are fun though.

Oops, my bad, I missed that, sorry.

Of course not, although he would eliminate all of it's funding and throw the books out into the street for "private enterprise" to take care of. Same thing really if you ask me...

I like a lot of games but for relaxation, its hard to beat a good old fashioned zombie apocalypse game.
