Tech Review: Alsoft DiskWarrior

Technology • Views: 2,142

One Mac utility that has maintained its incredible quality for many years, through many different revisions of the Mac OS, is Alsoft’s DiskWarrior 4. And I want to give them a big plug right now, because once again DiskWarrior has resurrected a startup disk that lost its startup.

This morning I was browsing some Mac sites and saw that Adobe had released a new version of their Flash Player, to address a list of security issues that had been known for quite some time. So I downloaded the installer, quit all my browsers and other apps, installed the new version, then cranked up Safari 5 to make sure everything was still fine.

Everything was not still fine. Flash videos weren’t appearing all the time. Sometimes they’d show up, other times they wouldn’t. Worse, I started having other weird display problems in Safari; flickering dialog boxes, symptoms I had never seen before. Good work, Adobe.

I decided to restart in Safe Boot mode, by holding the Shift key during startup. This clears all the caches, does some other housekeeping, and runs the Unix fsck utility to find and repair any disk problems. Or it’s supposed to, anyway; in this case, it got about a quarter of the way through and hung up. I waited over an hour to make sure, because an fsck on a 1TB disk can take quite a while, but that thermometer bar was not budging.

I forced a shutdown (by holding down the power button for five seconds), then restarted in Safe Boot mode again. Same thing happened. Argh. More drastic measures were obviously required.

Fortunately, I have a bootable image backup that’s automatically updated every night, via the excellent SuperDuper backup program. So I restarted the computer again, this time holding down the Option key to display the list of bootable drives, and picked the backup, which started up right away.

This is where DiskWarrior came in; whenever I have a problem like this, that can’t be fixed via Safe Boot mode, the next step is to try DiskWarrior. I rarely have to try anything else.

DiskWarrior works by analyzing a disk’s complete directory, and building an optimized replacement directory that is verified and then written to the damaged disk, and I’ve seen it bring some disks back to life that seemed like total goners. And it came through again this time; after rebuilding and replacing the directory, I restarted again and everything worked right away.

A little bit faster, in fact, since the new directory is nicely optimized too. I heartily recommend DiskWarrior for all Mac users; it’s one utility you absolutely must have, for those inevitable hard disk problems that plague us all.

P.S. I don’t know for sure that installing the latest Mac Flash Player caused all these problems, but my system went south immediately afterward. If you want to install it (and I’d recommend it, since it fixes some serious security holes), make sure you have a backup first.

P.P.S. After running DiskWarrior, my system works fine even with the new Flash Player, so the player isn’t the cause; possibly the installer.

P.P.P.S. I take back what I said about the new Flash Player working fine. I suddenly began getting psychedelic screen displays in Safari. The screen was all jumbled up like a jigsaw puzzle. Whee!

I just ran the Flash uninstaller, and reinstalled the previous version. (I wish I didn’t still have to use Flash player. This is one of the suckiest pieces of software in wide distribution.)

How is this better than going back with Time Machine? You should have been able to undo a safari/Flash update with that.

Also, the new Flash works fine on my Windows 7 PC. :-)

See, the only reason you folks have with Hard drive issues is because you are not running hot swappable Raid 5 Optical Hitachi SCSI arrays..

The disk wouldn't start up at all, and DiskWarrior found lots of problems in the file system. Something (probably the Flash installer) laid waste to the directory structure. Can't fix that with Time Machine.

Check out Planet Vampire, and look for Wesp's fixes. They have been pretty stable from my experience. On install, you can choose from Patch fixes only, or fixes + alterations/additions he has made to the game.

Hitachi will sell you an Enterprise 15k optical SCSI drive for about 5000.00 a pop.. These drives aren't play school...And that's cheap compared to what we sell the Gov't for the NSA and CIA....Those are pricey drives

I really doubt that a Flash install corrupted your filesystem! You may have a disk drive that's starting to go flaky. Check to see if there's a SMART diagnostic program you can run to check the health of the disk.

I keep my machine clean, run Malware bytes on a regular basis, stay away from sketchy sites, and if I think I've hit a questionable site by following someone's link run an immediate scan. I also don't download "fun games" and crap anymore...and I never, NEVER, open attachments sent by my parents who are relatively new to email and forward crap they get from their aging friends...or I view them on my googly-phone, which I can always reset to factory settings and delete all data with a simple swipe of my finger (address book, phone numbers, etc. are all on my gmail anyway, so the phone automatically recovers said "lost data").

Back about 8 years ago we upgraded our product line from the 7700 to the 9900.. But we had a warehouse full of 7700's..And the big boys wanted the new system.. So we offered 7700 SAN systems for free.. Just sign a support contract...You make alot of money on service and support..We cleaned that warehouse out... If I remember correctly Sabre, The Airline reservation system snapped up a 137 Boxes...

re: #19 Charles

re: #3 reuven

Charles' data was safe on the backup, it's just that he would have had to replace the internal drive with a new one. Sometimes an irrecoverably broken filesystem is caused by the disk starting to fail due to old age, but sometimes it's just a glitch that can be easily fixed by DiskWarrior.

I have replaced my internal drive once, years ago, and was happy to have backups of my most important data to an external disk (WD 500 GB MyBook) and network mounts, which I did manually from time to time. I kept my research data and music, but lost a lot of odds and ends that I ended up missing, including some holliday photos which I only have on hardcopy now. After the disk replacement, I got a second external disk, and have done automatic Time Machine backups.

Recently, my Time Machine disk started failing (the older external disk didn't fail first, which might be due to statistical randomness, because they were of the same make.). I could have bought Disk Warrior, but at that state of things I had only one set of data that I could trust to work - on my laptop. That was a bit scary, now that I had gotten used to having my whole system backed up, and I wanted to be able to roll back. What I did was to remove the failed Time Machine disk from its enclosure and put it in a desk drawer in case I needed to roll back to some old data on that now read-only disk. Then a put in a brand new drive in the enclosure.

Opening up the WD MyBook enclosures isn't a beginner's job though, involves some rubber gasket stripping, and they can look very different inside. If you want an enclosure that's easier to open, and cheaper, you can get an Icy Box or something like that.

I tested those at Best Buy once. Was almost going to buy it but they were a little too pricey. Don't know about the noise canceling but they fit really nice and the sound quality is very good.

Looking at that page now I should have bought that at the time. Looks like the price more than doubled.

Yeah, they are really expensive but they might be worth the investment for me. My neighbors a few doors down started running some sort of construction business in their garage. It's really loud. Some of the intermediate neighbors are going to put up a new fence to block the noise but I don't think it's going to work.

re: #2 Charles

That must be one helluva special PC.

Java update to version 6.20 just did about the same thing to me, but I only had to boot into safe mode and then load a "restore" back-up from four days previous. Turns out it was a conflict with my graphics card drivers...fixed now.

For about an hour there before I figured out what was wrong I thought I was going to have to do a complete "format C/Reload", I remember when that was the only option back in the Win:95/98 days.

Windows may have it problems, but it doesn't suck nearly as much as it used too, thank God.

(BTW: Thank you Java for automatically sending me another update that "breaks" my computer, this was the second time in four years. Maybe Apple is on to something in banning you from the Ipad, jerks. )

They claim 25 hours with 500 charging cycles. I've never tested to confirm. The batteries are expensive, $50 for one which kinda sucks. Like something Apple would do.

Wonderful on an airplane, not only cuts down the noise but the Movie sound is vastly improved.

Note that the "noise cancellation" only reduces noise, it doesn't eliminate it.

And for those of you who have some navigated the internet without ever noticing there was porn around;

'Shady' porn site practices put visitors at risk

Visitors to porn sites are at serious risk of being exploited by cyber criminals, a study has suggested.

It found that many sites harboured malware or used "shady" practices to squeeze money out of their visitors.

By creating their own porn sites researchers found that many consumers were vulnerable to known bugs and loopholes.

Competition among porn sites makes the online adult industry ripe for abuse by hi-tech criminals.

"They have almost inadvertently created a whole ecosystem that's easy to abuse for cyber crime on a large scale," said Dr Gilbert Wondracek, a computer security expert from the International Secure System Lab, which led the study.

They did something that totally broke their video player on Macs quite a while ago, and they still haven't fixed it. It's one reason I don't post their videos any more; I can't watch them.

So that's it. Weird that they would be so behindhand on something like that.

Yeah, I'm hoping it will shave off enough decibels to make things less annoying. I just noticed the new version runs off AAA batteries. I always keep plenty of rechargeables around.

Yes, I see that now. Good improvement. Not only cheaper, but you can carry a spare. Also, the charger has to be carried around and can be easily lost.

In dealing with a loud office ventilation fan which was load enough to be annoying, it pretty much silenced that. Anything louder is just cut down, but noticeably so. The effect is, of course, even stronger if you are playing music as well.

Windows does not give you the option of disabling Java, you can stop Java scripts from running in I.E. or other browsers but you can't stop it from running at start-up (and automatically downloading updates then asking you over and over to install them). I have tried to disable Java update a dozen different ways and found it to be impossible so far without screwing something else up, sucks don't it?

May Java burn in Hell!
On the bright side.. Oracle now owns Java...There are real opportunities here to reform Java and extend Javascript...
The concept of Javascript is brilliant.. No access to file systems..No calls into the Kernel.. Just an easy script to do things on the web...Oracle could expand that same concept with Databases..You could do complex views from the background safely...Instead of the complexity of XHTML calls to a table...A 14 year could write a few lines of code and manipulate views in an MYSQL Database...Safely

Yes you can disable the Java update using msconfig and selective startup. Just uncheck the box. This is an important step for someone with limited RAM.

Hummus is the new trendy dip of the moment for some reason, my local Publix supermarket that is a small one and only carries a limited selection of most things has an entire nine foot long refrigerated case at the deli that is dedicated solely to hummus in 35 different flavorings.

I can't fathom it myself, especially since they have quit carrying several chip and vegetable dips that I used to buy to have room to carry all the hummus. One can only hope that people quickly get tired of it like most other fad foods of the moment and start carrying a wider variety of stuff again.

It's been several years since I was at the restaurant, so I don't remember what the felafel looked like, but the sauce wasn't the traditional hummus stuff. It was sort of like.... have you ever tasted Pakistani mango pickles? They're packed in a sort of curried sauce & oil and they're sour (they don't even taste like mangoes, which I dislike). Anyway, the sauce sorta tasted like that, but not so strong or oily.

In fact... I may run over there now.

For ONE NIGHT - Fuggedabout Apple and Mac. Yesterday, I loaded Office 2010 Trial to our Main Computer - (Windows 7 64 Bit) real quick, no problem. To my Notebook (Vista HP 32 Bit) this morning - same thing. To a Windows XP, SP3 computer as we speak, I am down to Dial Up Speeds on a cable line to load.
I sincerely believe Office 2007 is HATED for its ergonomics. 2010 is a throwback to 2003/Open Office "3" in some major ways - ways I totally appreciate. "Word" - if you will pardon the pun - seems to have gotten out.
Office 2010 is 2007 the way it should have been - just like "7" is really Vista SE - i.e. the way it should have been. M/S seems to be getting "on the stick" again. This is good. -S-
