That sounded more like she was reporting on the action of “the gulf lawmakers” then making the statement herself… that is not to say she does not agree.

God helps him who helps himself.

By the way the well is also leaking a lot of methane, and some of it is getting into the atmosphere. Methane is a greenhouse gas too.

Rick Perry: Oil spill may be ‘act of God’.

lol…

“From time to time there are going to be things that occur that are acts of God that cannot be prevented,” Perry said.

BP is off the hook and deserve an apology! Now if we can only get god to set up an escrow account to clean up all that oil.

16 Irenicum  Sun, Jun 20, 2010 2:38:28pm

What’s so incredibly insulting in all this “act of God” talk is that the ones using it are supposedly devout people. And yet the God they say they all believe in has a few things to say about personal and even corporate responsibility. But in saying that the oil spill is an act of God, they’re denying any human responsibility for what happened. And that, my friends, is exactly their point. Utter blasphemy!

17 Charles Johnson  Sun, Jun 20, 2010 2:39:04pm

So basically, Sarah Palin is begging God to help clean up the mess that Rick Perry thinks God created.

Pretzel theology.

18 allegro  Sun, Jun 20, 2010 2:39:11pm

Gov. Perry’s stance isn’t really surprising when you read the Texas Republican Platform. A few choice pieces:

We also urge the Texas Legislature and the United States Congress to enact legislation prohibiting any jurisdiction from allowing any substitute or parallel system of Law, specifically, but not limited to, Sharia Law, to be recognized which is not in accordance with the Constitutions of Texas or of the United States of America.

Candidate Eligibility – A candidate running for office should be required to reside within the geographical boundaries of the office sought. A candidate must submit proof of qualifications for the office being sought, including proof of citizenship and in the case of a presidential candidate, an original or certified copy of a birth certificate, bearing names and signatures of parents, attendant(s), as well as date, time and location of birth for the purpose of satisfying the requirement of being a “natural born citizen”.

Controversial Theories – Realizing that conflict and debate is a proven learning tool in classrooms, we support objective teaching and equal treatment of all sides of scientific theories, including evolution, Intelligent Design, global warming, political philosophies, and others. We believe theories of life origins and environmental theories should be taught as challengeable scientific theory subject to change as new data is produced, not scientific law. Teachers and students should be able to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these theories openly and without fear of retribution or discrimination of any kind.

We pledge our influence toward a return to the original intent of the First Amendment and toward dispelling the myth of separation of church and state.

Except for non-citizens, we further oppose any national ID program, including the Real ID Act and the use of Radio Frequency Identification Chips (RFID) on humans.

There is so much more. It’s all in there. Didn’t miss a nutbar beat.

These include well funded, vigorous political and judicial attempts by powerful organizations and branches of the government to force acceptance, affirmation and normalization of homosexual behavior upon school children, parents, educational institutions, businesses, employees, government bodies and religious institutions and charities. re: #41 Charles

they’ve done a lot down here that appeals to the electorate and then comes back to slash and burn. and yet, we [as a state] keep voting republican.

see: prop 12. caps on medical malpractice. sounds like a good idea - except they made the caps so low, that plaintiff’s lawyers rarely take on those cases anymore, unless the person injured made [x] amount of dollars, where [x] is an amount way over minimum wage. see, economic damages weren’t capped.

so, fewer plaintiff’s cases. guess that might also sound good - except that there are people who REALLY deserve to have their case heard by a jury, who never make it to court, because they can’t afford it - texas law requires a medical expert to testify, and they charge as much per hour as a lawyer [sometimes more].

and the republicans keep saying that it was medical malpractice that drove up insurance premiums, only there was NO statistical increase in cases during the time insurance premiums went up. the only difference? insurance companies tried to fight more cases.

bottom line: there are doctors who should NOT be practicing medicine because of gross negligence, who are still practicing, because they haven’t been hauled into court. families that are sorely in need of money due to medical negligence [not a bad outcome, which is expected and i understand that, but medical negligence is altogether different] can’t get it …

and yet the republicans claimed it as a victory.

the machine down here has been on spin cycle for a long, long time.

don’t even get me started on hurricanes and insurance companies.

summation: texas politics = cesspool of bad craziness. and now i will step off my soapbox.

They’re real upset about them gays, too.

Homosexuality – We believe that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases. Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God, recognized by our country’s founders, and shared by the majority of Texans. Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable “alternative” lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should “family” be redefined to include homosexual “couples.” We are opposed to any granting of special legal entitlements, refuse to recognize, or grant special privileges including, but not limited to: marriage between persons of the same sex (regardless of state of origin), custody of children by homosexuals, homosexual partner insurance or retirement benefits. We oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values

It’s the gift that keeps on giving! More:

State Militia – We support the establishment and maintenance of a volunteer Constitutional State Militia, with assistance from County Sheriffs.

Judeo-Christian Nation – As America is a nation under God founded on Judeo-Christian principles, we affirm the constitutional right of all individuals to worship in the religion of their choice.

Just so long as it’s either Jewish or Christian (leaning real heavy on the Christian, I’m sure)…not a lot of tolerance there for Muslims, Buddhists, Sikh, and other predominant “non-white folks’ religions”.

see: prop 12. caps on medical malpractice. sounds like a good idea - except they made the caps so low, that plaintiff’s lawyers rarely take on those cases anymore, unless the person injured made [x] amount of dollars, where [x] is an amount way over minimum wage. see, economic damages weren’t capped.

so, fewer plaintiff’s cases. guess that might also sound good - except that there are people who REALLY deserve to have their case heard by a jury, who never make it to court, because they can’t afford it - texas law requires a medical expert to testify, and they charge as much per hour as a lawyer [sometimes more].

Wow, the effects of tort reform that are never ever mentioned. It’s easier just to vilify attorneys.

re: #58 allegro

Sounds to me that the TX GOP would declare open season on gays if they could, then give those who cause harm to them a total pass.

that’s part of the machine, y’see. spinspinspin.

there’s no easy answer to medical malpractice premiums or medical malpractice, in general. but it’s particularly venomous to vilify attorneys, when the vast majority [not all of us] want the same things patients AND doctors want:

efficient, effective health care.

republicans [not all, most] + insurance companies [probably all] have very effectively triangulated the three interest groups [patients, doctors, and attorneys] so that we fight each other, as opposed to fighting the real problem.

that’s a fine texas example. but there are national republican examples of this strategy, too.

this is being used very effectively right now re: homosexual rights + marriage, oil companies + alternative energy + global warming…the list goes on.

God helps him who helps himself.

By the way the well is also leaking a lot of methane, and some of it is getting into the atmosphere. Methane is a greenhouse gas too.

You entirely missed the point. This particular methane is a danger to the marine ecosystem when in solution. It is not significant on an atmospheric scale. It could turn out significant in patches of the water.

The far greater worry is from a bio-degradation of the oil itself. The microbes that eat the oil are thriving, and also consume oxygen. If total dissolved oxygen falls to low, we get a zone which will kill all the organisms which depend on oxygen.

I’m not convinced the methane component is a major threat. Most of it goes to the surface and dissipates into the atmosphere.

I realise that, the issue is the scale. This blowout does not appreciably increase atmospheric levels of methane. Alternatively, the oil has a very measurable impact. What the article was saying is that the elevated dissolved methane could contribute to that impact on the marine ecosystem.

I can’t see what it has to do with tax deductions. As far as I know, religious groups set their own standards on who can be a member and who is eligible for sacraments. The only thing I can think of is that they might not want to have to hire gays and then provide benefits to a legal spouse.

Maybe they just enjoy making people unhappy. Who knows?

I am really leaning more toward the ‘unhappy’ at this point. I have no other explanation to determine how it’s the business of some theology to meddle into the personal affairs of someone who chooses to believe otherwise and is not a part of that theology.

“And that Word is, we have to give voice to what that means in terms of public policy that would be in keeping with the values of the Word. The Word. Isn’t it a beautiful word when you think of it? It just covers everything. The Word. Fill it in with anything you want. But, of course, we know it means: ‘The Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.’ And that’s the great mystery of our faith. As with everything in this world there are levels. I wouldn’t compare Pelosi’s level of pandering to Sarah Palin’s level of pandering. In fact, I wouldn’t even call Sarah Palin’s rhetoric pandering — I think she actually believes what she says. Whereas Pelosi was pandering.

Oh… agreed… I lived in Texas for almost 16 years… no difference in many cases… but you get my point, and so does Ray and Gus and anyone else who is trying to minimize Pelosi’s comment…

I don’t care if Palin believes it more than Pelsoi, or what level of thought is behind which comment, that has jack to do with what’s happening… and what’s happening is using religion, either sincerely or not to advance policy.

I only minimize Pelosi’s comments when it is compared to Palin’s level of religiousness. There is no comparison. As I already started Pelosi is pandering while Palin is a true believer. No, I am not a fan of Pelosi and would like to see her go as Speaker of the House.

However, I don’t see her religion affecting or having the ability to affect policy as would the consistently American Christian ethos of Palin. This at the same time when many Christians have called for the excommunication of Pelosi for her views on abortion.

Jewish joke seems appropriate here.

This man has been praying devoutly and fervently, year after year, that he will win the lottery. Finally, one day, he’s at it with extra fervor, if that were possible. And a voice booms out from the heavens:

Can’t you at least meet me half way, schmuck? Buy a lottery ticket!

We can at least try to do our part. And if we get lucky and no storm wrecks the relief well drilling rigs, no further blowout makes a nullity of all our efforts, etc., would we even recognize that we’d got a break?

What would be the point of free will if nothing much really rode on what we decided?

I find it very hard to maintain my patience when we see such BS. Perhaps, if only God can save us in such a crisis, because our technology is not adequate to handle a disaster - in an operation based more on greed and cutting corners than safety - it behooves us to not drill so deeply.

Of course, God, through all those physical laws He created which you must believe He made if you believe in Him, has made it excruciatingly clear that he won’t save us from the consequences of continuing to burn fossil fuels. The Big Guy is really into cause and effect and justice and all that.

Of course Sarah Palin along with the other GOP oil whores would never think so consistently about God. God isn’t so keen on whores who abuse the public trust either come to think of it…

Here’s another one:

Immunizations - All adult citizens should have the legal right to conscientiously choose which vaccines are administered to themselves or their minor children without penalty for refusing a vaccine. We oppose any effort by any authority to mandate such vaccines or any medical database that would contain personal records of citizens without their consent.

[Link: static.texastribune.org…]

That’s ridiculous. Denying your child vaccinations is no different from denying them a car safety seat. You’re running a risk with another’s life and health. We can argue about whether adults ought to be allowed to travel without wearing a seat belt. There’s a case to be made either way. But no adult, not even the parent, has any business to deny their own child the protection of seat belts, car seats, or vaccines.

It doesn’t matter if they hold some tinfoil belief that vaccines cause autism, or that if God had meant man to wear seat belts, he’d have made the first cars with them already installed. Some decisions involving risk to life and limb are open to debate: should children play football? Others are not.

Oh yes, they won’t perish in an eco collapse as well.

I want you all to look at something that was predicted about AGW and is coming to pass.

[Link: climateprogress.org…]

“Hellish heatwave” in Pakistan sets hottest temperature in Asia’s history, 53.5°C (128.3°F); in India, hundreds die, death toll expected to rise as record temperatures soar up to 122°F

Now most don’t really care too much in the US about thousands of dead Pakistanis and Indians - after all, they are brown and not Christian, and clearly less important than our own affairs. I do happen to care. This is not a case of confusing climate and weather. The link provided shows the trend of more extreme weather and the fact that we are swinging into more and more record highs.

This is also in an area predicted for it to happen.

You see, despite 2000-2009 being the warmest decade on record, we had powerful a la nina towards the end and an unusually calm sun (not that the solar variation was a big factor in any case) We still warmed anyway, but guess what, it is el nino time in the Pacific oscillation and the sun is getting back to normal.

So get it straight. You can’t live in 150 degree weather. Welcome to real summer heatwaves… coming soon to a nation near you… Like America. Speaking of God, while we don’t notice this event, He is very very into measure for measure… When it gets here and it is much too late to do anything, we will notice.

Between coal/oil lobbyists and NIMBY’s its just a brutally hard sell.

re: #269 LudwigVanQuixote

There are ways and ways to save. A touch of inspiration in the right place at the right time can lead, after years of dedication and effort, to mighty consequences. Consider the story of the slave trade captain who had a change of heart and wrote one of the most famous hymns in Christianity.

It is evident from history that we should not expect lightning to shatter slave trade shipping, or any other sort of wickedness and foolishness of ours. We must ourselves act against such things. It is not entirely clear from history that we never get hints.

With AGW, though, do we need a hint? Doesn’t the natural world itself provide clues enough? And why do those not count as being, in the final analysis, “a hint”?

Yep. The state GOP here has been taken over by crazy people.

Oh, how I wish the Dems here were worth damn. I vote for them largely because that’s the Republican Party I have to contend with in Texas. Bad crazy all around. =/

First of all, there was someone who brought a collection of GUNS to show off… all kinds of military weapons that I suspect would make big loud noises if they were filled with bullets and gunpowder and stuff like that.

And I think I saw some skinheads for the first time. There were all these older people wearing beat up leather vests with all kinds of patches and symbols on them… and they were wearing caps with numbers on them… they all looked like bikers… but very old… really, skinheads I think.

And there was at least one Nazi there… I know he was a Nazi because the name on his leather vest was “Gunther” and he was white. I didn’t want to mess with him.

All in all… that VFW was a nest of nationalist pride, which I could see how much of a danger this could be to our society. I was glad to get out of there. Amazing how much power the Right gives Palin.

You mean that out-of office Sarah Palin “irrelevancy” that:

a) Keynote speaker at National Tea Party Convention/
b) Keynote speaker at Southern Republican Leadership Conference.
c) Endorses Republican and Tea Party candidates nationally.
d) Make rebuttal statements on Fox News after official White House speeches.
e) Is frequently held in high regard by the GOP and New Media figures.
f) Is considered a factor in 2010 elections.
g) Is a daily contributor in the national political dialogue.
h) Is a popular speaker at GOP and Tea Party events.

You mean that power?

LVQ - I’m now curious. What would be the outcome if we “ban all oil drilling” here in the U.S.?

Or did you mean worldwide?

I mean we get off of fossil fuels as soon as possible as a nation - which burns 20% of them anyway, so that wuld make a giant dent, and export green tech in a way that works to the rest of the world or we all pay the consequences.

The consequences are billions of deaths over the next hundred years or so leading to a collapse of our democracy as we know it.

If you doubt that, ask yourself this… When in the US, there is only enough food for 2/3 people, what sort of government will we have that decides who the unlucky 1/3 are?

So yes, we need to fix ourselves and lead the world in fixing itself. We really do not have the luxury of entertaining other options.

I know that you and I disagree on how much to ban, how soon. You can debate economics and I can point to the costs of delay. In the end of the day, the laws of physics are greater than market forces. You may see my views as naive, that’s fair. I see anything that doesn’t try to move away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible as dangerous.

OK, but that is still not going to happen. The oil interests are simply too strong right now. Some these fields are going to be drilled, and what the carbon from them does, it does. People are going to demand to see new technologies in use before they agree to an oil drawdown, Frankly, electricity generation strikes me as a better lead-off issue. Nonsense. And the only thing that appears ‘Verboten’ is acknowledgment of the suffering and loss experienced by the Jews.

Interesting
that you would insert a German word into this particular discussion. You should familiarise yourself with the word “Judenrein” as that is what happened in a vast area of nations many times larger than tiny Israel.

Alternatively, Arabs are free to live in Israel and granted citizenship and rights they are deprived of in their own nations.

Real Jews care more for lives than material property. Real Jews understand that evil has no messenger… I do not have the authority to say that, but Moses already said it for us. You would know that if you were one.

Better to refer to Fox Nation and the New York Post than to come up with an original thought.

Well I don’t believe he’s actually a Jew in any sense, so …

I get your point tho’ :p

Heh :) Brookly is also a democrat - did you know? The words ‘lying’ and ‘git’ immediately spring to mind.

579 Jimmah  Sun, Jun 20, 2010 9:48:01pm

Brookly red is a Jewish democrat with a black g/f and a pet gay whale.

So when he slags off Jews, democrats, blacks, lesbians and whales, he does so with authority and legitimacy.

At least that seems to be the effect he’s aiming for.

The only reason they allow for Jews at all is they need them for all the pieces of their end-of-the-world story to be fulfilled.

Volunteer uniformed state militias, separate from the National Guard, aren’t that rare—our state (AL) has one. It is self-funded by volunteers, responds to the Governor, and is not armed.

This is Texas we’re talking about. You know they’d be armed. You never know when some gay Muslim PTSD sufferer born in another country whose sister once had an abortion may need to be shot.

Seriously, if God loves us, why would he end the world on a Saturday? Wouldn’t Monday be more appropriate?

re: #230 OldnGrumpy

From the link-

‘My favorite word? That is really easy. My favorite word is the Word, is the Word. And that is everything. It says it all for us. And you know the biblical reference, you know the Gospel reference of the Word.”

“And that Word,” Pelosi said, “is, we have to give voice to what that means in terms of public policy that would be in keeping with the values of the Word. The Word. Isn’t it a beautiful word when you think of it? It just covers everything. The Word.

Hunh?

Am I getting senile? or is that senseless gibbering?

To us, it’s gibberish. When you’re seeking votes, it’s called being a Catholic. The Word means whatever we decide it means. When you think about it, not all that different from Wonderland.

Cowboys play their early games at 11am here…

re: #292 brookly red

well now why would I watch the Cowboys even if I was drunk in the middle of the afternoon?

(easy dude, easy)

Agreed. Why root for a team that hasn’t won jack this century?

then again, you never could talk sense to Cowboy fans.

Given that I am a Jew, and you know it, understand that the Heir is more than insulting.

I really don’t care about your view here. This is about saving lives.

It would be more insulting had he spelled “Herr” correctly. I’m not sure who “Heir Quixote” is; Quixote’s son or daughter, perhaps?

Ban oil drilling now. Make wind farms here. Use eminent domain laws to tell the NIMBYs to shut up. Build nukes and deploy solar while we are at it.

Thorium reactors.
