Chris Matthews, ‘Rise of the New Right’

Politics • Views: 4,115

This video playlist from MSNBC contains the complete Chris Matthews feature, “Rise of the New Right.” You can jump to any section by clicking the “Playlist” button that appears at the lower right of the player when you move your mouse over it.

Regular LGF readers will notice that almost everything in this show has been previously covered here, but Matthews does a creditable job of documenting the resurgence of an unhinged far right element, spearheaded by groups like the John Birch Society with roots in paleo-conservatism, conspiracy theories, and old-style antisemitism.

Kind of a shame that Matthews was the one who did this. He’s not going to reach the moderate conservatives that really need to hear the message.

Matthews has a worthy documentary with this one. It does lean left, but its quite serviceable.

It is a good run down of a story that needs to be told.

Excellent documentary and chronology of events. I think Chris Matthews has been reading Little Green Footballs. We’ve covered most of what I’ve seen so far — almost in exact sequence.

speaking of wingnut theories, i was told that obama’s management of federal finances will soon lead to 30% of federal budget obligations being owed in debt service every year for the foreseeable future

are any credible analysts predicting that?

no one that you would consider credible…

but if you trust your self do the math on a 13 trillion debt and lets see what you come up with?

24 Gus  Sun, Jun 20, 2010 5:40:37pm

Skipped over to Stewart Rhodes of Oathkeepers. What a wast of gray matter that is. He brought up the Hessians as an example for what amounts to his paranoia. Worthy of high ridicule.

25 Randall Gross  Sun, Jun 20, 2010 5:42:03pm

I thought he went pretty light on them all, there’s a lot more out there that he only lightly touched upon. It’s a documentary that will be paid heed by the left, but it’s not effective enough to wake up what moderates are left in the GOP I don’t think.

my feeling is the administration would have run the numbers beforehand and arranged the interest payments in such a way that ss, medicare, and military expenditures would not be seriously impacted, since this would lead to serious chaos, deep depression, and, additionally, destroy the credibility of the democratic party forever

i also have to imagine that the united states government would have some leverage to negotiate terms

If you click the link in my post, the MSNBC page for the show has more embedding tools. One nice feature - you can mark a section of a clip that you’re interested in, and embed the marked section instead of the whole thing.

Chris definitely leans liberal, but he’s no moonbat or wingnut. He can be a bit of a bulldog at times, but I actually like that about him. I think the strongest feature of this documentary is the historical part.

SNIP

Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by a father and mother, a single father, two fathers, a step father, a grandfather, or caring guardian. We owe a special debt of gratitude for those parents serving in the United States Armed Forces and their families, whose sacrifices protect the lives and liberties of all American children. For the character they build, the doors they open, and the love they provide over our lifetimes, all our fathers deserve our unending appreciation and admiration.

It’s a smart move by Obama, IMO. It’s like one of us using a post to Stalkers. Like the Stalkers, the so-cons are sure to overreact, at which point Obama looks sane and normal while they look crazy. And if they don’t react badly, then it still doesn’t hurt him. Win or draw.

Correct. Technically, two fathers can also mean two brothers with one being the father with his brother, etc. I wonder if he’ll be chided for not mentioning “two mothers” — no wait, that’s already started. There again on the technicality, fathers day is for fathers and not mothers so it would be an absurd point.

So cool, you made me look it up. Wiki, but:

According to the legend, a woman named Emily D. West — a mulatto, and hence, the song’s reference to her being “yellow” — who was seized by Mexican forces during the looting of Galveston seduced General Antonio López de Santa Anna, President of Mexico and commander of the Mexican forces. The legend credits her supposed seduction with lowering the guard of the Mexican army and facilitating the Texan victory in the Battle of San Jacinto waged in 1836 near present-day Houston. Santa Anna’s opponent was General Sam Houston, who won the battle literally in minutes, and with almost no casualties.

Summer Solstice

LONDON — New Agers and neo-pagans descended on Stonehenge to celebrate the summer solstice, each hoping to catch a glimpse of the sun as it rises above the ancient stone circle early Monday morning.

The annual all-night party typically draws thousands of alternative-minded revelers to the prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain as they wait for dawn at the Heel Stone, a pockmarked pillar just outside the circle proper which aligns with the rising sun.

Monday’s sunrise, marking the longest day of the year north of the equator, is scheduled to occur over the circle at 4:52 a.m. local time (0352GMT.)

If they’re in an aquarium (fishbowl, etc.) they have to have something to stand on after a certain point. We loaded up a styrofoam cup with some rocks and put it in so the little tadpoles became froggies without drowning.

Then, because I was 8 1/2 months pregnant, we took them to a local pond and let them go, at which point they probably became a statistic in the food chain, but I didn’t tell the kids that.

No, they don’t, they spend their time doing STUPID things (apologizing to BP, fer cryin’ out loud, then a bunch defending the apology! How damned ridiculous was that?)

GOP politicians are in a very tough place. The Democrats have many things that they could actually be criticised on, but talking about them would be totally uninteresting to their voters. It’s a bizarre political situation. Their voters are so heavily caught up in worshipful cults of personality that they demand bigger, crazier, more hyperbolic criticisms, rather than something reasonable and based in fact. I don’t envy them their situation at all.

My daughter told me her allergies are bothering her and she kept taking her Benadryl, and for the first several days couldn’t figure out why she was so sleepy all the time. One of her buddies finally saw her taking the benadryl and told her, well, DUH! She had to find some non-drowsy antihistimine.

I was an “escort” for a group of college kids to Milan, Italy, when I was 20ish.
Older than the kids were, anyway. They couldn’t get anyone “more responsible” than me to take the job. Herded the kids at the airport, made sure everyone had the right docs, slept for hours on the plane, got off the plane in Milan, handed the kids off to another “keeper” and fooled around, on my own in Milan for two weeks, FOR FREE! It was great!
I’d do it again in a NY minute.

Chris didn’t go far enough. I remember going home after school when the hearings were on TV. We lived in LA and my cousin Jim was a grip for one of the studios and I remember the fear that he would lose his job. It wasn’t just writers, directors, producers that were black listed, but all kinds of workers.

During the depression the communists would have meetings and serve sandwiches, people were actually going hungry. Then they would have people sign a sign-up sheet. Those sheets were then used by the RW idiots to go after people and call them “commies.” There might have been a few commies, but mostly people just wanted a sandwich.

No, Chris didn’t go half far enough and it’s amazing that now that I’m an old lady I am astounded at how much I can hate those people that are trying to do the same thing today. I really didn’t think it was possible to hate some people as much as I hate those ignorant bastards that are trying to hurt the country again. Wouldn’t you think that once would be enough?

Thanks for bringing this up Charles. Every American should know how how these people tried to hurt America before and are trying to do it again.

The new dynamic played out last week in a series of startling Senate votes, where Democratic leaders fell short on a package of new spending and tax cut extensions – and seemed genuinely surprised that they were unable to keep their own members on board.

I admit I like her too.
And I’ll admit this too -
While the situation between Charles & Dianna was not a pretty one, I’m thrilled for him (idiot though he is) that he finally got to marry Camilla, who I think is the love of his life. He should have married her before (and may have done so, if it had not been for his trying to maintain proper royal appearances)

In fact, she was one of the first high profile people to be seen with AIDS patients in Africa. Her biggest effort, though, was working internationally to ban landmines. She was a dedicated woman.

I don’t do parties. Financial markets have gone global since the mid 2000s. We were struggling under a near recession for the better part of that decade which led to the final near collapse on October of 2008 which led TARP as promoted by Hank Paulson who worked alongside the New York Fed boss, Timothy Geithner.

Even though spending has increased it still on the same trajectory as it was before January 20, 2009. Majority of spending is on entitlements and defense. With the former we have an aging population and baby boomers entering the entitlement “market.” On the latter we are fighting a two front war in Iraq and Afghanistan which are still not free or payed for by Iraqi oil revenues (as promised). At the same time we are providing military “services” for the Persian Gulf, North Korea, Haiti, East Africa (pirates), and the Indonesian region.

Everything was, still and will be set up for the top 1 percent of this nation. Nothing has changed before January 20th nor after. My world fell apart on October of 2008 and hit bottom in October of 2009. This was with both Republicans and Democrats at the helm. Frankly, whoever wins in 2010 or 2012 probably won’t mean a spit of difference in my life.

The aging of baby-boomers means two things. Your adding in a larger number of people into an already bankrupt entitlement program — make that programs. And, you’re going to see an imbalance between a working population and a retired population. An aging population means higher entitlement requirements — i.e. Federal spending and/or borrowing. Heck, that includes me.

About the VFW… here… reprint…

For fathers day my family took me to our local VFW monthly Post breakfast buffet and you won’t believe some of the scary things I saw.

First of all, there was someone who brought a collection of GUNS to show off… all kinds of military weapons that I suspect would make big loud noises if they were filled with bullets and gunpowder and stuff like that.

And I think I saw some skinheads for the first time. There were all these older people wearing beat up leather vests with all kinds of patches and symbols on them… and they were wearing caps with numbers on them… they all looked like bikers… but very old… really, skinheads I think.

And there was at least one Nazi there… I know he was a Nazi because the name on his leather vest was “Gunther” and he was white. I didn’t want to mess with him.

All in all… that VFW was a nest of nationalist pride, which I could see how much of a danger this could be to our society. I was glad to get out of there. I hope when Janet Napolitano starts to monitor the internet that the federal government pays close attention to these VFW places. I heard there are thousands of these hives.

Oh yeah, that’s Walter at top form.

Oil spill will cause 1 million permanent lost jobs.

This follows the upper figure of the range I estimated here some weeks back of 100,000 to 200,000 jobs in the drilling and direct service business.

The analyst then used an employment multiplier of 4.7 (I have been suggesting 5) to arrive at the 1 million permanent lost jobs.

The Hagia Sophia is in Istanbul, which is in (modern) Turkey. But Istanbul is Constantinople (Istanbul was also the ancient Greek city of Byzantium).

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you’ve a date in Constantinople
She’ll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can’t say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can’t go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks

Then take the train to Paris. Enjoy. Then the high speed train down to the Cote de Azur. Drive along the Riviera living large.

Take the train to Florence, then the train to Rome, and another train to Brindisi.

Fly back to the states direct from Israel.
Take ferry to Haifa via Crete.

Take the ferry to Greece and a train to Athens.

BP to raise $50 billion for oil spill costs

(Reuters) - BP (BP.L) is planning to raise $50 billion to cover the cost of the largest oil spill in U.S. history, London’s Sunday Times reported without citing sources. The paper said BP planned to raise $10 billion from a bond sale, $20 billion from banks and $20 billion from asset sales over the next two years.

The oil major had said last week that it would suspend dividends and increase the pace of asset sales to $10 billion this year.

A spokesman for the group would not confirm any numbers on Sunday, when asked about the Sunday Times report

Note, suspending dividends will cause another institutional sell off, as many funds are required to have the money in dividend producing stocks.

Share price is down to 357.45 pense, and this move removes about 1 out of every 6 pounds in income for British pensioners. The damage to US investors with IRAs, Mutual Funds and Pensions is larger in absolute dollars, but more spread out.

Local effect - jobs and timeline.

The oil and gas industry provided more than 50,000 jobs in Louisiana in 2009, including 15,000 in Lafayette, according to the Lafayette Economic Development Authority. Oil workers make up slightly more than 10 percent of the local work force, but an even larger share of earnings, with oil and gas workers earning an average of $2,000 a week.

A study by the Lafayette Economic Development Authority estimates the moratorium could lead to $466.7 million in lost wages and income, delivering an economic impact of $2.4 billion to Lafayette.

The study cautions Lafayette could lose 7,756 jobs in the next year. That would drive unemployment rates above 10 percent, a level not seen since the oil bust of the 1980s.

“I know we can overcome anything, but these numbers are ominous,” said LEDA President Gregg Gothreaux.

“Even if it’s half-correct, it’s going to cause much more damage to our economy than the recent recession did.”

The LEDA study predicts Lafayette will feel an “immediate loss” from the 39 drills that were already in production and forced by the moratorium to stop drilling.

Another 24 wells had been approved to begin drilling, and another 16 were expected to be approved during the next six months.

Each of those wells would have employed about 230 people, the LEDA study estimates. That could lead to a loss of 18,170 direct jobs and 19,404 indirect jobs across the state.

Speaking of Byzantium, a poem by W.B. Yeats - and the origin of the title of the book that inspired the Coen Brothers film:

Sailing to Byzantium

THAT is no country for old men. The young
In one another’s arms, birds in the trees
- Those dying generations - at their song,
The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
Monuments of unageing intellect.

An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
Monuments of its own magnificence;
And therefore I have sailed the seas and come
To the holy city of Byzantium.

O sages standing in God’s holy fire
As in the gold mosaic of a wall,
Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre,
And be the singing-masters of my soul.
Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal
It knows not what it is; and gather me
Into the artifice of eternity.

Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing
To lords and ladies of Byzantium
Of what is past, or passing, or to come.

Both GOP politicians and supports dare not look past November because they have no idea what they want the GOP to do once it regains power.

Personally, I confess I’m feeling a lot like Gus. Not much more can be done about unemployment, which is going down at a glacial pace. The Dems managed to pass HCR which, while better than the status quo, is still deeply flawed — and neither party will have the political courage to do the necessary reforms in the next 3 years (at least, my best guess would be the next 7 years). Repealing the bill is a Republican fantasy that will quickly become a nightmare if there is any serious attempt to do it. Climate change legislation will not be passed no matter what happens in November. Same thing for card check and pretty much all the rest of this Administration’s political agenda.

Very little is at stake in November save the jobs of each party’s congressmen.

Yes, but they made the decision to up the ante on their own. Up to 50 billion from what was 20 billion — the latter of which I will assume was their first offer. They’re already stating they can carry 10 billion from a bond sale. At the same time they’re still generating revenue around the world which has reached almost 25 billion in pre-tax income. The 50 billion will be considered a loss.

I’m not sure why BP now is going with the 50 billion figure. It’s hard to second guess what goes on in that board room. My suspicion is that this is a sort of Hail Mary play - they’re hoping that one of two things will come out of this: 1. buy them breathing room in the feeding-frenzy melange that politicians/pundits are going, and/or 2. give them an out tax wise, where ever they are taxed, as this is one hell of an expense and consolidating it will make the write-off methods tractable.

I’d lean towards number 2. At the same time this also minimizes the courts and legal wrangling which would only prolong the negative publicity. It can actually be a win-win situation for BP if they play it right. I never checked but “where ever they are taxed” sounds about right.

That being said the final act will be the relief wells. If those don’t work that will be a major game changer and it won’t bode well for BP.

For a corporation, what could be worse than a gigantic liability? A: an unlimited liability.

My suspicion is that BP is hoping that going with a gigantic clean up fund will help them find legal space in America, maybe even written into law, and we certainly know that BP has friends in Congress.

Without HCR, this Dem Congress would have been a huge disappointment. But the GOP obstructionists aren’t really the main obstacle to the rest of Obama’s agenda. It’s the diversity of the Dem caucus. Moderate/conservative Dems from the South and Midwest just don’t agree with liberals on the coasts about much, so getting things passed is nearly impossible. The GOP rarely has such internal friction.

Maybe the finance bill won’t suck, but it seems about a year late. Shouldn’t there have been an urgency in the middle of the Great Recession to pass financial reform?

I just got done watching by far my favorite Twilight Zone episode ever: an episode featuring the recently departed Dennis Hopper as a nascent neo-nazi guided by the primordial evil of Hitler himself. The episode was from nearly fifty years ago and yet rings true to this day. Watching it was eerily familiar to so much of what I’m seeing nowadays. So many of his talking points are espoused right now. Rod Serling was truly a prophet of the human condition. I wish he was wrong. I really do. Why do we have to be this way? Never again has never been so prescient.

Right now a fun thing is drive up a canyon and park at a fire road. Walk up the fire road. A study in vistas and native plants. And recovering landscape in burn areas. Most of that is closed but I have access to private property that burned. Way back Little Tujunga Canyon.

Southern California smells like nothing else in the world. Truly amazing.

Neither does Jersey.

Oh yes exactly like that. Great stuff. Curves, ships rail, and lots of glass. What is the tower on the left?

That’s the private elevator I posted about above. It’s Old Hollywood up there - except that now it’s been yupified. When I was there, you could practically see the ghosts of the silent stars on foggy nights. Here’s a link to a blog that talks about it:

It’s all totally different now. I like the Natural Frame shot: it looks like a hand-colored postcard from way back….

Thanks, I want to get back to Jalama beach. The long road to it is the cool part. Not far from Vandenberg. Well work comes early, going to knock out for the night.

No place quite like it. I used to live up on the flank of the Hollywood Bowl - the only area accessed by a private elevator. It was Old Hollywood, quite hidden, secret and haunted when I was there…

Am I mistaken or is that elevator and the house beside it used in The Long Goodbye with Elliot Gould? It looks familiar…

Get no respect. No respect at all!

Perhaps you don’t deserve any respect, Rodney.

I’m glad someone got the reference. Dumb song, but I love it.

This is one of the things that struck me the most on my visit to the Sixth Floor Museum, the parallels between current rhetoric and then.

The closest casino to my place is called the Hollywood. It has some great pictures of Old Hollywood on the walls. Unfortunately, that’s about the only thing they got right. Terrible acoustics, terrible temperature control, no easily-seen traffic patterns in the playing areas, etc. It replaced a smaller casino on the same site that had little ambiance but was comfortable. Progress!

Anything worthy of note or way it just mindless?

Jones ranted about Matthews being MSM and having a lot less of an audience than himself, put up the straw-man that Matthews had accused the anti-healthcare-reform movement of being racist, etc…

I dunno, check out the drivel yourself:

413 (I Stand By What I Said Whatever It Was)  Mon, Jun 21, 2010 3:20:32am

Watching more of this, it gets a lot worse. He starts of with making fun of a (british?) woman from NBC who came over to do a pre-interview (?) and apparently was shocked over there laying a gun around in Jones’ studio, then segues into making fun of holocaust victims for looking subservient to their executioners on film…

Ugly, ugly human being.

re: #413 000G

Alex Jones is an absolutely loathsome human being. And he’s becoming very influential on the right wing. For example, Drudge Report now has a permanent link to Jones’s site infowars.com.

And at least 50% of the silly outrageous outrages that pour out of the right wing originate with Alex Jones or one of his cronies.

My personal stories about encounters with the “new right”.

I wanted to start a local neighborhood group to oppose a Poll Tax that the Cupertino High School District got on the ballot.

I tried to find some like-minded people and stated our clear mission. “Our agenda is to oppose this poll tax. Our group shall have no opinion on any other issue.”

I was unable to find anyone else who was willing to agree to these terms Sure they “agreed” to begin with, but soon our mailing list was littered with diatribes about “birther conspiracies”, arguments against same-sex marriage, etc. I closed down our website and our mailing list after this started.

In the end, I battled this issue by myself; taking legal action against the school board for illegally using taxpayer dollars to campaign for the poll tax. (It ended in them stopping the illegal activity, but the state AG was unwilling to prosecute them.)

I’d love to know how many of the people at these “Tea Parties” actually pay in more to the government than they take.

US Budget / US Population = $9650

wolframalpha.com

So any family of 4 that’s not paying $38,600 in federal taxes has a hard time, IMHO, complaining about high taxes, unless they explicitly trying to make taxation more fair for everyone.
