The Right had a damn good shot at Reid this year. I predict they will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Given her current track record, I predict we’ll be getting her “fuck the minorities” speech about the second week of July.

And another teabagger is on track to win the primary in Colorado.

“John Cornyn and the NRSC keep saying they are staying out of primaries, but keep getting involved,” said Erick Erickson, founder of the influential conservative blog Redstate.com. “The NRSC’s integrity is on the level of Arlen Specter and Charlie Crist, both of whom the NRSC supported with Norton.”

Of course, Erick Son of Erick would be the perfect person to ask about integrity.

Unemployment pays more than a regular job? Obviously, she’s never had to survive on unemployment.

“That’s not my job” she says? (with regard to bringing jobs to her state)…this woman is writing Harry Reid’s campaign commercials for him.

“Its not my job to create jobs” I wonder what she thinks her job is then.

Somebody help me do some math.

Federal Minimum wage is $7.25 (I know varies from state to state but lets use it as an average)

7.25 * 8 Hours a day, * 20 at least days in your average work month= $1160 a month. Minus taxes.

Can someone tell me how much people get for unemployment these days?

Maybe not on paper but THAT is exactly the job people expect their Senator to do, that’s how you keep getting elected. You can be a POS, but if you can bring jobs and “pork” how the people will keep electing you.

Depends on how much you made in your previous job, but up to a certain cap. That used to be a hair over $400 a week here in NY, but that was 5 years ago.

From eHow.com:

#
Step 1

Figure out your base period for calculating unemployment. For instance, if you start your claim in November of 2008, the base period you would use is July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. The highest quarter during this base period is used to calculate how much you have earned. The earnings are only for work preformed for an employer that pays unemployment insurance.
#
Step 2

Look at the base period where you received the highest pay. This is the base period that is used to calculate your potential unemployment benefits.
#
Step 3

Calculate the highest quarter earnings with a calculator. You will receive four percent of the total wages in the highest quarter. The maximum weekly benefit rate requires earnings of $8,875.00 for a weekly check of $355.00. The minimum weekly benefit rate requires $1,325.00 for a weekly check of $53.00.
#
Step 4

Calculate what your weekly benefits would be if you have another job. Take your weekly gross income and subtract $30.00. Multiply the balance by 67 percent. Take the total WBR and subtract that total to get the amount you will receive for partial unemployment benefits for that week.
Example:
Weekly Benefit Rate is $335 Gross income is $275
1. Gross income $275 - $30 = $245
2. $245 X .67 = $164.15
3. $335 WBR - $164.15 = $170.85
4. Round $170.85 down to $170

How much jobless pay would you get?

Could you live on less than $300 a week? The average unemployment check in the U.S. is $293.

Below you’ll find a state-by-state list of maximum weekly benefits.

The solution is that unemployment support eventually runs out. Someone unemployed for a unusually long stretch of time probably needs to re-train and shoot lower. Of course Congress can extend benefits during tough times, as they are doing now.

I wonder exactly when the average American nitwit in the tea bag orientation realizes that the Tea-bag leadership that is supposed to be on their side, actually holds them in the deepest contempt. The sad thing is that they likely won’t ever get that message.

If this were someone else’s country, I would laugh at the obvious Darwin award implications of it. Unfortunately, it is not another nation - and in this nation, being an utter moron who is batshit crazy and in possession of a barely functioning 8th grade education, does not preclude one from voting.

You know I’m sure that someone used to making a decent salary might wait until their unemployment is almost used up to take that job as a cart pusher at Target.
That is if Target is hiring.
That does not mean they are spoiled.
It means they are smart as their time would be better spent sreaching for a better job, networking and stuff like that.

Unemployment, food stamps and such help keep people in their homes and fed. It also keeps these people as consumers and we want people to keep buying stuff.

The fuck did this woman call me? “Spoiled”? When’s the last time this woman had to go from business to business, getting told to her face “don’t bother” when asking for an application because most businesses can barely afford to keep the skeleton crews they already have? Or spent hours hunting through want ads and online listings to find out that most of the jobs that are hiring require experience or education that she lacks? Or had to decide which is more important: Keeping the lights on or food on the table?

“Spoiled,” my ass. I’d gladly trade places with her in a minute if she thinks that the unemployed have it so good.

Unemployment is not a handout—it is an insurance payout. Your employer counts the premium as part of your compensation package when you are working. People earn their freakin unemployment.

50 lawhawk  Mon, Jun 21, 2010 1:03:00pm

re: #38 LudwigVanQuixote

Sadly, most voters don’t realize that most politicians hold them in contempt - and it doesn’t matter what party we’re talking about. The politicians have an entitlement complex and that the voters are there for them, rather than the other way around. Voter apathy also plays into that, and that even with corrupt politicians you get constituents who think that they’re doing a good job so should keep getting reelected.

The messages being sent by politicians is generally to see that they get 1) elected; 2) reelected; and 3) rinse and repeat. Message testing consists of what will play well so that they get reelected.

The GOP sure is raising up quite a crop of canny politicians this year.

And it’s going to get them elected… pay attention to the mood of the country. Wrong or right… this is what happens when when the kleptocrats and plutocrats are allowed as much freedom to plunder and rape this country as they have been doing. Yes, this sort of political theft has been going on since the beginning of time, but, it has now become a majority, a tipping of power, something that can’t just be mitigated by the lonely few honest politicians left.

This is not crazy… it’s to be expected… it’s a normal reaction.

If I were the enlightened despot, I would make the following restrictions.

No voting if you:

1. Wear a mullet. Sorry, no excuses - none.

2. Call the Civil War the “War of Northern Aggression.”

3. Honestly believe that the universe is less than 6,000 years old. If you have some complicated interpretation of scripture that allows you to accept that we measure the the age of the universe in the billions of years, but reconcile it with scripture somehow, that is another matter. But f you honestly can not be swayed by any evidence, then you do not get to vote. Voting is an exercise of power of the collective destiny of our nation. It requires educated and prudent judgement that understands changing conditions.

4. Honestly believe that your opinion has the same merit or weight as scientific fact or that you are the equal of a scientist or a medical doctor in rendering judgement on such matters when you could barely pass algebra.
No excuse for that. Go whine to someone else. Government should be handled with humility, not the sort of arrogance that assumes that you are such a special snow-flake that your views have equal merit to all others in all cases.

5. Get so riled up that you have to protest, but then can not really articulate what you are protesting about. Exercising voting rights is an expression of power and a sacred duty - not the pass time of virulent sheep.

6. Just as we should not let paranoid schizophrenics vote - we should not let those who believe in Britherism or Deatherism or Trutherism vote. Those views when passionately held are prima facia evidence of mental illness. Government should be restricted from the insane.

Before people get riled about the elitism and condescending humor of my post. Please consider the following fact. Democracy fails if the citizens are not capable of making a democracy work. We have seen it fail in numerous other less developed places where we imposed democracy. We are seeing it fail now in our own nation. Western nations are not immune to having the corrupt and stupid members of their societies seize political control through ostensibly democratic means. Hitler, after all, was elected.

I guess your solution is food stamps forever and ever. There should be a program to help the person get off food stamps.

Let me guess…when you see someone buying groceries with food stamps and they pull out a $20 bill to pay for the six pack of beer that they have added to their groceries, you immediately think they’re abusing the system. Maybe if we forced people on food-stamps to buy nothing but Cheerios and 2% milk the world would be a better place. Then again, maybe not.

I was on food stamps for a few weeks in 1975 while I had a job.

Is there a problem with cheaters these days? I really don’t know. I would guess there are but I don’t know how pervasive they are.

That’s the way it’s supposed to work. Yes, there are always cheaters. There are always bank robbers, but we still build banks.

Well posted. Of course the voters who buy this shit are to blame ultimately for it. I am very serious when I say that voting is a grown up endeavor that requires due diligence. If you think and act like a child, you have no business exercising grown up rights.

There are always, always people who game the system…one bad apple and all that.

We all knew that welfare cheat with the caddy that Regan talked about…of course she really did not exist except in the mind of people who don’t want other people get “entitlements” they themselves are not getting.

And this is why I have supported and continue to support legislative term limits at every level of government. We have created, through our apathy and our blind support, government of professional politicians, of 535 elected royalty who believe themselves above their station above the unwashed masses who put them into office and pay their salaries. If it’s good enough to keep presidents from overstaying their welcome, then it’s good enough for Congress critters as well.

Precisely. It’s about Angle being the “best the GOP could come up,” it’s about the fervent, wild-eyed, frothing lunacy that has gripped their base since Obama won. Tarkanian would have probably beat Reid black and blue in November and been a fine addition to Congress. But he doesn’t speak “Populist” and so never had a chance against Angle.

One small quibble? Wasn’t Hitler’s Party “elected” to a number of seats with about 1/3rd of the vote would get them in Germany’s version of the senate?

Sorry my bad his party evidently got 43.9% of the vote at its very best (with Hitler already as the guy in charge of the executive branch more or less) before that the highest they got was 37.4 in July 1932 in July

Hitler’s party never broke the 50% mark and Hitler himself was appointed Chancellor….

We were not talking about premeditated fraud in obtaining food stamps. We were talking about someone legally using their own personal money to pay for a non-food stamp eligible article. So, with your logic, it would be wrong for a mother to purchase a special treat for their children, since they are on food stamps… “take that Matchbox Car away from that little beggar… he’s not getting any toys until I’m making 125 grand a year…”

You’re cold.

Well said, Walter…but the prevailing opinion of too many people is that, so long as a person is on food stamps, they don’t have (or shouldn’t have) personal money.

Obviously not. Now, if I can get through my day knowing that a child is starving in Darfur, why should it bother me if I see a child starving on the street by my house? Fuck WIC, welfare, food stamps, unemployment and Section Eight. I can’t help everyone, might as well help no one.

I am sorry to say that I’m not sure the “spoiled unemployed” line will lose her many votes. It’s a mild version of the sort of thing Rush says all the time. There might be people in Nevada who quite like this equation: if we got rid of all the Illegals, then Unemployeds would be able to take their jobs and quite sponging off the rest of us good, God-fearing, honest folk.

NYC car bomb suspect pleads guilty

NEW YORK – A Pakistan-born U.S. citizen has pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge accusing him of plotting the failed Times Square car bombing.

Faisal Shahzad (FY’-sul shah-ZAHD’) entered the plea to the first of 10 charges in an indictment, but said he plans to plead guilty to all of them.

He told the judge he wanted to “plead guilty and 100 times more.” He also warned that unless the U.S. leaves Muslim lands, “We will be attacking U.S.”

Entering pleas one-by-one, he began by pleading guilty to attempted use of weapons of mass destruction.

Shahzad is accused in a plot that fizzled when a gasoline-and-propane bomb failed to ignite in an SUV parked near a Broadway theater May 1. The Bridgeport, Conn., resident was arrested two days later.

Wow.
Spoiled?
What a heartless bitch.
I wonder if she was unemployed if she would head on down and take that “honest” job at WalMat or Mickey D’s?

It gets better…

In the meantime, companies continue to lay off more workers. The Department of Labor report on new claims for unemployment insurance on June 17 showed an increase of 12,000 new claims, to a total of 472,000 for the week ending June 12. The continued job cuts of almost a half a million workers a week show that the labor market is still weak. To make matters worse, more and more companies are refusing to hire the unemployed. A growing number have even said publicly that job applicants must be employed in order to be considered for a job. Even more refuse to consider applications from the unemployed but do not say so publicly.

Of course, we all that Real Americans would simply start their own small business with gumption and boot strapping while their families live on fresh air and dreams and the kids pay the bills on their paper route money! That is the Real American Frontier Approved Way!

Then, they can get bulldozed by a massive corporate environmental fuck up and the GOP could claim that any effort to recompense them is a shake down of real businesses

Yes, there are plenty of Biological weapons, and Chemical weapons. In terms of practical usage, they’re
ill suited to cause “Mass Destruction”, especially in the
hands of people who don’t have access to artillery of aircraft.

It would be noce if there was a frontier to go to. This is what people fail to understand about freedom in America. In the past, if you wanted to get away from the masses and strike out on your own, you could. That option is gone. You are trapped in this corporate owned country.

re: #157 webevintage

About 10ish years ago my husband lost his job and was unemployed for a month or so.
We were on food stamps for that time.
At first I was really embarrassed when the card would not work and the people in line would be huffing until I remembered that I had paid for this though my taxes at some point and I was not going to apologize for using a program when we needed it.
I also used WIC when my son was young because we qualified and the dirty looks I would get…

Been, there, done that.

I was astonished that when I was badly injured at work and my employer decided to challenge my worker’s comp rights, the corporate VP of HR told me to get welfare and food stamps. Seriously.

Considering it took a year to come to a legal agreement with them, it was the only feasible option. I got flamed hard for that when I mentioned it over at Megan McArdle’s.

The crowd there seems to think you should off yourself with a pistol to the head instead of being a drain on their taxes.

Yes, there are plenty of Biological weapons, and Chemical weapons. In terms of practical usage, they’re
ill suited to cause “Mass Destruction”, especially in the
hands of people who don’t have access to artillery of aircraft.

They’re better at causing hysteria.

Bio weapons, especially, aren’t nearly as effective as Stephen King had lead me to believe.

Is there a problem with cheaters these days? I really don’t know. I would guess there are but I don’t know how pervasive they are.

The cheaters have always existed and always will exist. Their numbers are very small though.

I can tell you from personal experience any changes to ‘get tough with the cheaters’ will hurt the honest a lot more. The cheaters will just discover how to cheat the new rules.

An utter crock of amoral, Machiavellian bullshit. I suppose the people let go from aerospace, the textiles and garment industries or everybody along the Gulf just didn’t make enough luck? They didn’t manage their portfolios with due assiduousness? I have no idea where your Galt’s Gulch is that you think you are not affected by corporate malfeasance, but by all means, keep making up luck.

The volcano, not El Nino? That is interesting. Is there a climate page a sharp amateur could follow to learn stuff like that?

On one page not so much. However, at the time of the eruption there were a number of links posted here that discussed the effect. If you want to track it down, James Hansen first reached prominence in the climate world by accurately modeling the global climate effects of a large volcanic eruption back in the eighties.

Another gaffe from big mouth Sharron Angle. This goes being a complete lack of empathy towards a complete lack of the actual facts. Most people pay into an unemployment insurance fund in order to receive benefits when unemployed. A good percentage of the unemployed at not receiving benefits and are either working at whatever crappy job they can find, eating into their saving or retirement funds (if they’re lucky enough to have one), or are out on the street.

The old tired cliche of “getting any job” you can get has become an urban legend. I doubt big mouth here has been paying attention but a lot of people are doing just that. However, if you were making 70K per year and have a mortgage to pay getting any job mean you’re still up the creek without a paddle. It can only work for a month tops. The urban myth aspect is that McDonald’s does not hire aerospace engineers to work in their joints. Once they see you’re overqualified (even to replace the local manager) they won’t hire you.

While I’m at it. Minimum wage is not a living wage.

This Ms. Angle is clearly not thinking about the “little people” she claims to want to serve. I was unemployed between May 2009 and April 2010. That’s 11 months. Without that $405 + $25 in benifits, I would have defaulted on my student loans and credit cards, after my 401k was tapped and my savings ran out. (Not to mention all other kinds of personal recriminations and feelings of shame.) Being in a position where I wasn’t flat-dead broke, being able to avoid begging my parents for money (for suriving, not paying loans beyond their means to pay), and being able to keep my retitement fund mostly intact was well worth the cost to society, IMHO. In addition, it justifies my paying taxes the entire time I was working! Why take taxes if government isn’t going to help its citizens in their hour of need?

257 BongCrodny  Mon, Jun 21, 2010 4:40:09pm

Howdy, all ~~

Been lurking a while, but the topic at hand is of some relevance to my personal situation, so I thought I’d add to the mix.

I’m on unemployment for the first time since 1981. Unemployment compensation in the D.C. area (no dependents) is $359, with a $25 stimulus “bonus” added. It works out to a bit under $1,600 per month, and will be about $1,450 once the $25 runs its course.

I rent a one-bedroom apartment in Northern Virginia that is somewhere in the middle, quality-wise, at roughly $1,300 per month, before electricity and gas.

I’ve eaten so much Rice-a-roni in the past four months I’m changing my middle name to “vermicelli.” The 401(k), never much to speak of, is a memory.

I’m set to move back to Maine because I can’t afford to stay down here while unemployed. I’m 53 years old, with a good work history and good references (well…I think they’re good references, but who knows?) and today is the first time in four months that I got a callback for an interview.

…and so, at least for one day, all is right with the world — relatively speaking, of course.

I would much rather be working than collecting unemployment, but I’m really glad it’s available. I’m not interested in taking unemployment for a ride, but I think everybody wins if I’m earning and paying taxes at or near the $30/hr level than if I’m paying taxes on a $7.50 job retailing somewhere.

Anyone who can figure out how to support a cushy lifestyle on unemployment is somebody that should be getting paid to be a financial consultant.

I have never seen such a thing in my life, and I constantly had to use food stamps as part of my health care job (the clients at our group home got them, so we’d use them up before the house’s budget for food)

Then again, I’ve also never seen a single person at a grocery store in my life with a chauffer waiting or a mink coat. Where do you live?

Exactly right. I’m in Las Vegas, unemployment capital of the country. My friend’s husband lost his job and they couldn’t survive on unemployment. Both of them have tried finding work doing anything. She finally got an on-call job with strange hours (she has a 5-year-old son), usually doesn’t work 40 hours a week, and she can’t pay her mortgage with what she makes in a month. Her husband has tried finding work here as well as in other states, even trying to get even a lower paying job, to no avail. Sharron Angle is clueless.

I also want to know what she did in the legislature to bring jobs to this state since that is apparently is apparently the legislator’s job, not a U.S. senator. I hope Harry Reid uses her words against her (again) when she tries to say that Harry Reid hasn’t brought any jobs to Nevada.

I hope things start looking up for you.

Never seen it down here, either. How exactly would someone get food stamps in the first place, wearing mink? I’m pretty sure they do a fairly exhaustive check of your means before they hand the stuff out. A friend of mine who’s legitimately poor had to furnish a pretty intense amount of paperwork to prove he actually was, before they would even process him.
