Giant Space Brain Sighted by Hubble Telescope

Science • Views: 9,491

This astounding new photograph from the Hubble Space Telescope shows a gigantic brain-like formation of gas clouds and star clusters in our neighboring galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. Phil Plait has an analysis of the photo with a bit of a surprise at the end: A vast, cosmic cloudy brain looms in a nearby galaxy.

The disturbing thing is it also looks sort of like a space fetus.

The really disturbing thing is…

‘“It’s not right… not… right…
‘I feel g…o…o…d….”

‘“I feel g…o…o…d…
‘I’m h…a…p…p…y…
‘…friends…”

‘Ahh, Grr, Ohhh…
‘I’m h…a…p…p…y…
‘Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness…

Phil saz:
When I see images like this, I’m reminded quite strongly that the Universe is incredibly complex, beautiful, and — my favorite of all — surprising. The more we look, the more there is to see.

Isn’t that true of all things?

34 Girth  Tue, Jun 22, 2010 5:42:33pm

Just remember that you’re standing on a planet that’s evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That’s orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it’s reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the ‘Milky Way’.
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It’s a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it’s just three thousand light years wide.
We’re thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go ‘round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that’s the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you’re feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space,
‘Cause there’s bugger all down here on Earth.

McCarthy was right only in his first sentence or what one could say the title of his treatise. Otherwise, yes, his “delivery sucked”, as did the rest of the charade of the McCarthy hearings which in turn proved to be counter-productive. Even then there are limits to what the government can control and being a Communist is a right protected by the 1st Amendment.

re: #72 albusteve

You would say that. McCarthy was an opportunistic, populist, fear monger who destroyed others for his own advancement. He ruined innocent lives, created a climate of fear nd hysteria that prevented any possibility of ratcheting down the cold war and managed to remove any people with real expertise on the Russians from the State Dept. His ambition and avarice knew no bounds and he was only stopped when he over reached and went for the military.

You are a total fool and utterly immoral for even hinting he was right in any possible way. But then again, Steve I expect you to be a disgraceful troglodyte.

re: #83 albusteve

I was referring mostly to his comments in the video I posted. “Weeding out the liars and agitators” sound like a great deal of fear mongering. The actual text of the current diatribe by Voight is as follows:

An open letter from actor Jon Voight to President Obama:

June 22, 2010

Dear President Obama:

You will be the first American president that lied to the Jewish people, and the American people as well, when you said that you would defend Israel, the only Democratic state in the Middle East, against all their enemies. You have done just the opposite. You have propagandized Israel, until they look like they are everyone’s enemy — and it has resonated throughout the world. You are putting Israel in harm’s way, and you have promoted anti-Semitism throughout the world.

You have brought this to a people who have given the world the Ten Commandments and most laws we live by today. The Jewish people have given the world our greatest scientists and philosophers, and the cures for many diseases, and now you play a very dangerous game so you can look like a true martyr to what you see and say are the underdogs. But the underdogs you defend are murderers and criminals who want Israel eradicated.

You have brought to Arizona a civil war, once again defending the criminals and illegals, creating a meltdown for good, loyal, law-abiding citizens. Your destruction of this country may never be remedied, and we may never recover. I pray to God you stop, and I hope the people in this great country realize your agenda is not for the betterment of mankind, but for the betterment of your politics.

With heartfelt and deep concern for America and Israel,

Jon Voight

Thank you so much. That is one of the more important posts I’ve made here for this venue. People ask how I am so certain that things are going to be extremely awful for America in a business as usual scenario. Well there is a multi-agency report that covers the basics with easy to follow language and more pretty pictures than you can shake a stick at.

I love the bits where they show NH moving South to point out the NH in 2090-2099 will have weather more like Carolina. That should make people go hmmm and then ask what happens to the Southern US or the Mid West where we grow most of our crops.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Nikki Haley, an Indian-American woman, handily won the Republican nomination for governor and Tim Scott, a black lawmaker, grabbed the GOP nod for a House seat in South Carolina primary runoffs Tuesday, a fresh sign of racial progress in the Deep South and the GOP.

From the SC elections board:

[Link: www.enr-scvotes.org…]

41 of 46 Counties Reporting:

Nikki R Haley (REP) 64.64% 212,715

In the 2006 election Sanford won with 601868 votes out of a total of about 1,090,000. If the same number of people vote this time, Haley will need a bit over 500,000 votes to win, less than Sanford (who got 60% of the vote.)

So, she could get less than Sanford did and still win. I wonder how many votes she will get? Will there a a positive turnout to show support for a woman running, or will old biases come into play?

re: #109 LudwigVanQuixote

Thank you so much. That is one of the more important posts I’ve made here for this venue. People ask how I am so certain that things are going to be extremely awful for America in a business as usual scenario. Well there is a multi-agency report that covers the basics with easy to follow language and more pretty pictures than you can shake a stick at.

I love the bits where they show NH moving South to point out the NH in 2090-2099 will have weather more like Carolina. That should make people go hmmm and then ask what happens to the Southern US or the Mid West where we grow most of our crops.

Well, there’s a photomontage in the report showing a butte outside Tucson as it shades from arid grassland, to grassland with desert plants encroaching, to full-blown desert, in time lapse from 1902 to 2006 or something like that.

That’s with the one degree change we’ve seen so far. The projected increase in temperature for the U.S. is anywhere from 2 to 10 degrees, with 6 to 9 likely if it’s business as usual. So, let’s say 7.

In one century.

The changes figure to be more extreme in some areas. But let’s just say 7. Now crop yields really tank when you get a series of days above 90. That used to be kind of a rarity. It mostly didn’t get quite that high. But the way the bell curve works, if you shift the mean upward, the frequency of days to the upside of any particular “tail event” such as 90+ soars.

And if you figure 90 is no problem and the crops can handle it, how about this? The frequency of 100+ days will remain small compared to 90+, but the percentage increase in those events will be still more dramatic.

Fat Americans will become a thing of the past. Then, well-fed Americans will become a thing of the past. We won’t starve, because we can take up victory gardening, cut meat consumption drastically, and pull through even if our farm yields drop to half, one third, or one quarter of what they are now. But then comes the next century. And it won’t stop getting warmer until we stop loading up the atmosphere with heat-trapping gases.

WE won’t starve. But what about others? The U.S. is one of only a few nations with food security margins of several multiples of bare subsistence. And it bears keeping in mind that no man is an island, nor is any nation. Global famine will certainly have repercussions at home. And that’s taking a pretty cold-blooded view of things. Don’t we have some sort of obligation to do what we can, now, to head off this negatopic future?

It isn’t even all that difficult. We don’t even have to accept a permanent reduction in prosperity, compared to a hypothetical future in which greenhouse gases have been magically washed from the sky so we can compare a future built around wind, solar, nuclear, passive solar design, etc. etc. to a future built around consequence-free business as usual. The widespread adaption of these technologies pays for itself over time. Reduced fuel costs add up.

What we do have to accept is an interval of modified prosperity, in which we’re busy beavers putting a lot of effort into construction that isn’t slapped together but instead incorporates thermal design features and so forth, putting a lot of effort into building nuclear power plants, wind installations, power lines for these, and by and by, large scale solar facilities in deserts that have become so hellish that they no longer even host the endangered species that we will have endangered right over the brink.

We also have to work together with the other great economic powers of today. Most particularly, China. China is far less well placed than the U.S. to adapt to AGW. China is at least as big a contributor as we are, and going forward, it will be bigger. China cannot afford to continue as she has, even if all the rest of the world stops cold. Her own consumption curve is sufficient work her own nation great harm. On that basis, she must cooperate. If we will.

With his rhetoric, Jon Voight undermines the legitimacy of the presidency. He engages in fear mongering and atavistic ballyhoo that plays in the superstitions and paranoia of the Tea Party and Fox News audience. Through his actions, he, by default, undermines the legitimacy of our nation through his hyperbolic criticism of the United States. At the same time, he heightens the level of hysteria already existent in a significant segment of the US population.

When Jon Voight writes a barely coherent rant against Obama, and publishes it at the Moonie-owned, white-supremacist-linked Washington Times, this is not really the kind of support Israel needs.

I think his support is good for Israel, and I really don’t mind at all if he is highly criitcal of Obama.

Now, this is from Pam. But I followed the other story of how Vlaams Blaang got support from Pam, Spencer, Daniel Pipes & Liz Cheney. (posted in the links - you should really check those out)

It’s a deep dark passage that you don’t want to go down.

From Pam’s cached link:

One thing is clear, Vlaams Belang is the only party that has gone out of its way to support Israel. No political party in Belgium has supported Israel. Vlaams Belang has been the only party staunchly behind Israel for the past 10 years.

Have I ever seen a movie this person was in? All I know about him is he’s someone’s dad—Angelina Jolie? Someone.

My sister and I admired him for his role in Varsity Blues. He rescued the movie (supposed to be a star vehicle for James van der Beek) from Beek’s inability to hold his own.

Spare, do you have to always go to the absolute bottom of non-sequitur in order to make a comment? I know you think that is a gotcha, but do you really doubt my support of Israel or the Jewish people in general? Do you really honesty question that?

No the issue is that people like Voight make it impossible for a reasoned defense of Israel based on the facts. Any support of Israel gets lumped in with the teabags and seen as nutty itself. We do not need friends like that. It can only hurt us in the long run.

Thank you LVQ.

How could you find it surprising? I have never concealed my disagreement with Obama’s ME policy. At best, people try to defend him by claiming that he has continued Bush’s policies. When I look at the coincidental waves of anti-Israeli sentiment and anti-Semitism sweeping the West, Obama seems clearly deficient to me.

I think we’re getting our streams crossed somewhere. No one on this thread is denying Israel’s cultural and spiritual ties to the land. I’m arguing that that’s a horrible argument to be putting forward for ownership, though.

I have no problem with it. On top of everything else, there is a clear written document which has survived 3,500 years and establishes the unique connection between Judah and Judea, the people of Israel and the Land of Israel. It is frosting on the cake and Israel has no need to justify its ownership of the land.

There is a lesson here in Winston Churchill’s speech on the occasion of Hitler’s invasion of Russia.

Churchill basically said that he had spoken against the evils of Communism repeatedly, and that today he would unsay no word of it. Nevertheless, all that paled into insignificance. The overriding need was to defeat the Nazi horde.

Israel can accept the help even of friends who are friends for odd reasons, or only friends by reason of sharing a common enemy. She does not taint herself, any more than that speech made Churchill a Communist.

As Above, So Below Dept.:

In Vatican Fresco, Visions of the BrainYour text to link…

It has been hiding in plain sight for the past 500 years, and now two Johns Hopkins professors believe they have found it: one of Michelangelo’s rare anatomical drawings in a panel high on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Two professors believe that Michelangelo hid a drawing of the underside of the brain and the brain stem on the neck and beard of God.

Michelangelo was a conscientious student of human anatomy and enthusiastically dissected corpses throughout his life, but few of his anatomical drawings survive. This one, a depiction of the human brain and brain stem, appears to be drawn on the neck of God, but not all art historians can see it there.

This is not the first picture of a human organ someone has found, or at least imagined, in Michelangelo’s Sistine frescoes. In 1990, in an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a physician described what he saw as a rendering of the human brain in the Creation of Adam, the panel showing God touching Adam’s finger.
