An Open Letter to American Spectator

For the record, because I half expect the American Spectator to ignore it, here’s the email I just wrote to the editor:

Dear Editor,

As you may or may not be aware, one of your contributors, Robert Stacy McCain, posted several comments on Twitter today, referring to Mexicans as “beaners,” British people as “faggots,” and Germans as “Kraut swine.” Do you have any comment on this? Is this the kind of image you want your publication to present?

The details are in this post, quoting directly from Mr. McCain’s Twitter feed:

They won't can him and they won't even dress him down.

For them to do that is to have to admit an icon is flawed and they were wrong. If they call him out they will be asked why it took so long.

RSM is a lot like Hamas- he has never hidden who he really is or what he stands for. Those things are out there for anyone who takes the trouble to see for themselves. He may say one thing to those 'outside' the fold but he has a long history of saying quite another to those who hold him in high esteem. He has no cause to hide his documented bigotry because he has army of useful idiots who will defend him.

RS McCain today tweeted today mocking the UK, Germany and Mexico. He called them Faggots/Limeys (Brits), Kraut Swine (Germans) and Beaners (Mexicans). This was clearly a mock at those nations. Ever the hypocrite, the Jazz Man who mocks Catholics, Conservatives and Sarah Palin with worse language is creating manufactured outrage by having his Blog groupies tweet this story. To make matters worse, he once again displays delusions of grandeur. He emails American Spectator and posts it on his blog. He really believes they will respond to him or fire McCain. This is a Totalitarian act on the part of a man who admires Communists!

Sure, there are DINOs, at least in the minds of those on the Left fringe. Joe Lieberman is the first to come to mind. It's interesting how those accusations were toned down once the Left realized that the Democrats needed his support to get bills out of the Senate.

The Loony Left is sometimes as bad as the Rabid Right, but they are much smarter even if they're sometimes slow to pick up on realpolitik.

Good idea. If you don't have cedar planking, plain old aluminum foil may do the trick. You don't get the full grill effect, but it distributes the heat evenly and prevents losing the fish into the fire.

Random story, but I feel like sharing:

My (now ex) girlfriend is English. When she came with me to visit my parents here in the States last Christmas, she was delighted at the friendliness and openness of the Americans she met during her brief stay. The lone exception involved a visit from my brother's drunken high school "buddies". The three of them are 23 years old, haven't completed college or held steady jobs since high school, and pass their days getting drunk and stoned while playing XBox Live. I wasn't at home when they came a-calling, but the highlights (before she retreated to my bedroom to avoid serious argument) included frequent piss-poor attempts at some "English" accent and unfunny lines about Redcoats, horrible food, and the US "bailing out England" in WWII. Also on tap that night, as the three blathered on were a litany of homophobic and racist remarks about blacks.

The fundamental difference between RSM and these "failures to launch"? You tell me.

Even with taking the name of a fishy character gifted as a superb writer you're afraid of cooking fish? Ironic.

Look at it this way, the more practice you get cooking fish, the better it will turn out. That recipe you linked to looks yummy so you have no option but to go for it.

If I lived in your area, I would not hesitate to invite myself over for a taste.

Here's what I read.

The comments overheard were made by reporters assembled from other newspaper and television outlets, and at no time was the voice of our photographer or our reporter heard on the stream. It's very likely that those reporters and photographers were unaware, or simply forgot, that there was one television station with an open microphone broadcasting to the world. If you did not hear their comments, you can watch a portion of them here, captured by a viewer who was watching the FOX40.com live stream.

Additionally, it should be noted that FOX40 reporter, Andria Borba was not in the room where our signal was broadcast. She was across a courtyard, inside the actual event with Governor Palin. The voices heard delivering commentary after the speech were male.

Our photographer was also not in the room at the end of the speech. There was no cell phone service in the room, so he had to temporarily leave his camera on a tripod to walk outside and call our news director to ask how long to leave the feed up.

Rule of thumb: ten minutes of broiling for every inch of thickness. Test with a fork to make sure it's cooked all the way through.

BYW, I saw the bit you posted yesterday that the Idaho GOP thought people like me are such a threat that we have to be banned from marriage altogether.

I often wonder just what those kinds of moralizing scolds think transgendered people actually do to be such a threat to their fragile worldview. Maybe I should show up and scare some of them up in Idaho on Hallowe'en. ;)

The simple fact is that Chairman Mao was a pretty perceptive political thinker. You can deplore what he did in China and still realize that not everything he wrote was the sheer embodiment of evil.

There is a covy of probably two hundred quail in the bushes up behind the house. We used to sit out on deck and try to count them but never got very far. I especially enjoy it when the babies are brought out for the first time. Talk about overly protective parents! Been told that only one percent actually make it to adulthood. Red tail hawks pretty rule the skies and ground around here.

I tend to have a problem with custard fillings that don't set, but this filling was nice and thick. Just perfect!

The oreo crust was a bit rich, I think next time I will just make a plain graham cracker crust.

Al Gore was (hopefully) the last of my dogmatic reactions to an issue because of a person. He's a dolt, a board, and probably not going to ever get my vote. But I am guilty of denying AGW for a further period of time because he was a proponent of the theory, and I was against him. That was my bad. He is on the right side of the issue even if he's on the wrong side of tactics or tact.

I'll still make fun of him if it amuses me, at his expense. But whether he was a ratfucker, literally or figuratively, means shit.

Nope, I was brave and did it right on the grill about 4 inches above the coals. About 4 minutes per side. Very minor sticking and lost no chunks when flipping. The came out perfectly cooked.

That recipe reminds me of this one from epicurious that I made:
Black-Bottom Raspberry Cream Pie

It uses chocolate graham crackers for the crust (and a LOT of butter). It's probably less sweet than the Oreo crust-- might be a nice compromise for you next time you make your chocolate cream one.

(read the comments at epi though for tweaks on the crust.)

The problem I had with the movie is that it was too personal, and thus too much about him and his family.

Regarding the science in the film - it was no worse than most of the stuff that once sees on TV. Very simplified, not fully explained, and presented as "ta-dah, presto" rather than as a result of many decades of work.

It was Gore who helped, when he was in the Senate, to bring James Hansen's testimony and similar stuff to prominence. In that Gore did good work.

I know many conservatives won't forgive Gore for taking the 2000 election to court, but in the end he accepted the result. I don't blame Gore for trying, for he had clearly won the majority of the vote nation wide and it was only our state system of electing presidents that got GWB into office.

Where did Gore lie? What data for the graphs was lost? What makes you believe the Antarctic is not melting?

Sounds to me you have fallen for the misinformation spread by the denialsphere without investigating their points more fully, and have only grudgingly accepted the truth of AGW.

I much prefer the BBC documentaries, though they sometimes fall down on the job too.

Yes, the occasional NOVA show does a good job, but even that very long running series can fall into the "sciencetainment" trap.

I have, on multiple television programs and in various books. And I agree that it is truly horrifying, not only as an example of man's inhumanity to his fellow man, but also the human cost of the many advances that typified the Third Reich. The Soviets and Imperial Japanese did barbaric things to prisoners and their own countrymen alike, but they were never as...organized or callous about it as the Nazis were.

I'm not going to discuss the 2000 election here. But that's what the crux of the Gore hate is about, I wager.

The movie was to target people who knew nothing or little about global warming. It was to bring the topic to the public, not a presentation to the scientific community, yet it was packed with that information.

He showed his own personal history because he's been at it for 30 years along with clean air, clean water, a host of other environmental concerns along with telecommunications and technology. It's been his life's work when most of us were either in diapers or grade school. So forgive me if I don't accept your criticism.

It doesn't have to be, because the science is robust. The evidence is massive and overwhelming.

Denier talking points are, unfortunately, some of them true. They're lies nonetheless, from a certain point of view, since they don't prove what they're said to prove. But our work would be easier if there were no blemishes whatever in our case.

In hindsight, we can shake our heads at the practice, but we have to remember that the Soviets were gobbling up men and technology from the Reich as quickly as we were. They basically ripped up entire factories, down to the smallest parts, and carted them back to Mother Russia to rebuild and upgrade their own forces. The scientists were given their own Faustian bargain: Work for us or spend the rest of your days in Siberia (if you even make it that far).

I don't understand the derangement. I never saw the movie. He's barely said a word about AGW for months now. He lost the court challenge in 2000 and Bush ended up victorious. His marriage is in the swamps and now he has that ridiculous allegation dating back to 2006.

You should check it out, with the understanding that as marjorie says it was made for the widest audience possible and isn't going to be particularly satisfying, probably, for anyone already up on the science. I think the movie succeeds though.

I put off watching it too for years.

I haven't seen the movie since it came out, and I don't recall that. I'm sure it was there, it just wasn't memorable.

I'm afraid, among other things, that the practice led to a sort of normalizing of the Nazis that is still with us. I still see here, people insisting that our present enemies are more brutal, less civilized, less reachable than the Nazis or the Imperial Japanese.

It's difficult for me to understand how we've glossed over history to the point where we've forget what demons we fought and beat once.

It wasn't lost either. You are talking about the information that Phil Jones couldn't immediately produce about paleoclimate data from China. It had nothing to do with Mann's hockeystick graph, which by the way has been verified by at least 9 other studies, many of which did not rely solely on tree ring proxies, but included many more.

You have not done your homework.

But I have to say that one of the things undercutting corporate attempts to tell me and other people my age that climate change isn't real is that we sat through years of the tobacco companies getting up in front of Congress and God and saying that cigarettes didn't addict or kill, as the data rolled in.

Is there a direct parallel? No, not really. But that is an early experience for me of being aware that people who had a financial or ideological stake would lie through their teeth about science and scientists.

I'd say it has a lot to do with the fact that people nowadays have a sort of disconnect with the horrors of that time in human history. Kinda like Jenjis Genghis Khan or the Crusades, it's just something that we see in history books and only black and white films, rather than something we experience in real life. Historical revision is a powerful force, especially when trying to blunt the blow of past atrocities or claim that modern ones are far worse.

In his bringing environmental problems to greater prominence, and also some of the stuff he did as VP (such as trying to improve the efficiency of government agencies/departments.) In his legislative efforts there were some things I frowned upon - remember it was he (carrying out Tipper's wishes if not his own) who was a leading "conservative" voice against the media, etc.

Yet again, I hope that Gore fades into the sunset and enjoys whatever is left of his life, without the hassle the hate-o-sphere wants to dish out.

There is more of a parallel than you may be aware - some of the same individuals/organizations have been involved in both.

When I critique AIT about the family/tobacco part I'm criticizing the theatrical quality, not the point that was being raised. It seemed to go on for too long in the movie and it felt too smarmy to me.

To point: there has been some concern about the growing involvement of religious ideas and organizations into the realm of science. I'm not talking here of creationism (thought ID is an example of the problem.)

Peter Woit has written about this on his blog, especially about the involvement of John Templeton, who helps fund FQXi. (Woit had a brief appearance in the TV show btw.)

When I saw the show highlighting the work of Lisi (who has written of his experience being taped for the show) it seemed to me that the show had taken a turn deep into the speculative, going for a romantic view of science, not a hard one.

There is more, perhaps later I will expand on these.

I didn't realize that clip was from Shalom TV. Does anyone here get Shalom TV? I've been requesting it from DirecTV for a few years now. We have some other channel, but as I recall, it was mostly advertisements and they didn't have to many shows. I don't remember the channel name now. I should look for it again.

So, I haven't seen the movie but my impression is that it was created to provide an outline of global warming for general audiences and reflects a lot of information current to the year of production. The main point was to inspire people and not to be taken as I stated a syllabus or perhaps a text book -- although it is based on scientific facts. I think the film's website says it better:

Here's a London Times article about the High Court Judge. He banned the film from being shown in schools because he feels Gore is an alarmist and the film was more political than scientific.

He says though that Gore is "broadly accurate". The Judge speculates on the drying of Chad Lake the loss of Kilimanjaro’s snows and dismisses manmade global warning as a reason, that climate scientists say there is no link. And that the polar bears are not drowning.

He ends the article with this, though:

Despite finding nine significant errors the judge said many of the claims made by the film were fully backed up by the weight of science. He identified “four main scientific hypotheses, each of which is very well supported by research published in respected, peer-reviewed journals and accords with the latest conclusions of the IPCC”.

In particular, he agreed with the main thrust of Mr Gore’s arguments: “That climate change is mainly attributable to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (‘greenhouse gases’).”

I have never read a book with such raw emotion. When I read it, I kept picturing my own father. Which was probably McCarthy's intent, since he never gave a description of the man.

I don't watch what I eat or consider myself an athlete. I think if one did they should avoid gum. They use it to suspend the soy in drinks like this. And as a thickner.

Gellan gum is a water-soluble polysaccharide produced by Sphingomonas elodea, a bacterium.

"Myoplex" is a brand that is applied to several different products from EAS. But yes, they're not really a good deal, though EAS used to have one of the better reps in the body building scene (due partly to marketing, but also a bit to some good work early on.) You must be looking at their meal replacement stuff, which of course has a mix of items in it.

I preferred, when I bought the big jugs of protein, to get (from the San Diego area originally) Designer Whey, as I could get pure whey protein in unflavored variety, and when found on sale is a decent deal.

Most MRPs are not of a lot of use to adults, since we are normally looking to reduce our calorie intake and frankly the MRPs don't do that usually because they don't reduce appetite. However, for the young male who needs to add calories to his diet MRPs can be useful if they add them between their other meals. Well, that's assuming the male isn't already overweight.

Pure whey protein is good stuff for the body.

Wait, how can you agree if you don't think you're in error? That makes no sense, either tell us how it is Gore lied or admit you are, in fact, in error. Blaming Al Gore for prolonging climate denial in people who hate Al Gore is a tautological non-thought.

It's also not very bootstrappy, at the very least a person should be able to take responsibility for their own point of view. Al Gore didn't lie, he didn't cause you to lie about his purported mendacity, nothing he did makes it "harder to penetrate to the truth of the matter."

Another slap on the wrist if anything for this piece of garage. What respectable publication thinks that it is "just okay" or, you know, "in good fun" to let one of their own get away with calling Mexicans "beaners" (does McCain think he is Carlos Mencia or something?). I would get fired from my own job if I opened my mouth in such a manner. Calling British people faggots is really just morally inept in any case; yet this subhuman will continue to churn out the opt-eds as those who pay his salary will surely turn a blind eye to his obvious hate-mongering. That is the tragedy in it all, that he retains no actual responsibility for the terrible things that he says. Charles, you are doing the right thing by calling him out on it, and I commend you for it.

As a general rule, if the SPLC has an issue with you, there's a good chance that you're a slimy racist or an apologist for them.

In those days, lots of Ivy league college men were trying to get out of going and they did. He could have joined the reserves like many of his friends did, but he didn't.

He didn't have a dangerous position per se. He was a journalist, but he went and deserves that credit.

I've never said anything negative about his military service but lets not pin a medal on a senators son for spending 5 months in Vietnam carrying a camera. He didn't pull a traitor act like Kerry, which is why there is still so much animosity about the man, but he wasn't a hero either.

A couple of years ago I submitted a piece to the American Stinker on what the Right needed to do to regain influence in academia (hint, the exact opposite of what they've been doing since 2006.) I pointed out that conservatives could absolutely forget being taken seriously in academia as long as they were in bed with the anti-evolution cults. The editor told me I should read Michael Behe's book. I already have, in detail. The scene on the right now is like watching a train wreck.
