An Open Letter to American Spectator

Media • Views: 4,155

For the record, because I half expect the American Spectator to ignore it, here’s the email I just wrote to the editor:

Dear Editor,

As you may or may not be aware, one of your contributors, Robert Stacy McCain, posted several comments on Twitter today, referring to Mexicans as “beaners,” British people as “faggots,” and Germans as “Kraut swine.” Do you have any comment on this? Is this the kind of image you want your publication to present?

The details are in this post, quoting directly from Mr. McCain’s Twitter feed:

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com…]

I’ll be happy to post your response at my blog. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Charles Johnson

90% they don't. It's reckless to give higher odds than that on questions that can actually break one way or the other.

What McCain posted on Twitter is far, far worse than the private emails that got Dave Weigel fired.

For them to do that is to have to admit an icon is flawed and they were wrong. If they call him out they will be asked why it took so long.

Sure, there are DINOs, at least in the minds of those on the Left fringe. Joe Lieberman is the first to come to mind. It's interesting how those accusations were toned down once the Left realized that the Democrats needed his support to get bills out of the Senate.

The Loony Left is sometimes as bad as the Rabid Right, but they are much smarter even if they're sometimes slow to pick up on realpolitik.

Good idea. If you don't have cedar planking, plain old aluminum foil may do the trick. You don't get the full grill effect, but it distributes the heat evenly and prevents losing the fish into the fire.

Random story, but I feel like sharing:

My (now ex) girlfriend is English. When she came with me to visit my parents here in the States last Christmas, she was delighted at the friendliness and openness of the Americans she met during her brief stay. The lone exception involved a visit from my brother's drunken high school "buddies". The three of them are 23 years old, haven't completed college or held steady jobs since high school, and pass their days getting drunk and stoned while playing XBox Live. I wasn't at home when they came a-calling, but the highlights (before she retreated to my bedroom to avoid serious argument) included frequent piss-poor attempts at some "English" accent and unfunny lines about Redcoats, horrible food, and the US "bailing out England" in WWII. Also on tap that night, as the three blathered on were a litany of homophobic and racist remarks about blacks.

The fundamental difference between RSM and these "failures to launch"? You tell me.

Even with taking the name of a fishy character gifted as a superb writer you're afraid of cooking fish? Ironic.

Look at it this way, the more practice you get cooking fish, the better it will turn out. That recipe you linked to looks yummy so you have no option but to go for it.

re: #37 Charles

Yes, they are. Read the post.

Here's what I read.

The comments overheard were made by reporters assembled from other newspaper and television outlets, and at no time was the voice of our photographer or our reporter heard on the stream. It's very likely that those reporters and photographers were unaware, or simply forgot, that there was one television station with an open microphone broadcasting to the world. If you did not hear their comments, you can watch a portion of them here, captured by a viewer who was watching the FOX40.com live stream.

Additionally, it should be noted that FOX40 reporter, Andria Borba was not in the room where our signal was broadcast. She was across a courtyard, inside the actual event with Governor Palin. The voices heard delivering commentary after the speech were male.

Our photographer was also not in the room at the end of the speech. There was no cell phone service in the room, so he had to temporarily leave his camera on a tripod to walk outside and call our news director to ask how long to leave the feed up.

I often wonder just what those kinds of moralizing scolds think transgendered people actually do to be such a threat to their fragile worldview. Maybe I should show up and scare some of them up in Idaho on Hallowe'en. ;)

If you get a chance, try to watch the NatGeo series How the Earth Changed History with Scottich geologist Iain Stewart. Beautiful, engaging and fascinating treatment of history, anthropology, geography and geology. Information is the bane of creationists and climate change deniers...so watch it for yourself and get others to watch it also.

Who's that?

From wiki.

Weigel has written for USA Today, as an editorial assistant on the editorial page and as a reporter for Campaigns & Elections, for Slate, The Guardian, The American Prospect, The American Spectator, The Washington Monthly, the American Conservative, Politico, the Washington Independent, and The Nation. He has appeared on NPR's Fresh Air and MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show.[10] Weigel has also blogged for The Economist's "Democracy in America" blog, and guest-blogged for Andrew Sullivan's "Daily Dish" blog.[11]

In June 2010, excerpts of Weigel's emails from JournoList were leaked and published by Fishbowl DC and later The Daily Caller. The excerpts contained negative remarks about various public figures associated with American conservatism such as Pat Buchanan, Matt Drudge, Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh as well as being critical on the way many news outlet cover the more fringe elements of the grassroots members of American conservatism.[12] As a result of the leaked emails, Weigel resigned from Washington Post and JournoList was shut down.[3][13]

The simple fact is that Chairman Mao was a pretty perceptive political thinker. You can deplore what he did in China and still realize that not everything he wrote was the sheer embodiment of evil.

(I know, this is unthinkable to many on the right. But apparently not to Newt Gingrich.)

'MPR' insinuated that there was something wrong with this post. Quite the contrary. Mao was a monster and Charles has never said anything to indicate that he feels otherwise. However, Charles was saying that even that monster had some worthwhile insights. That is not a problematic statement at all. MrPaulRevere, your interpretation is in error. But since you did not insult me, I have worked to not insult you. But Charles is no fool, but instead is an intelligent and insightful man.

Al Gore was (hopefully) the last of my dogmatic reactions to an issue because of a person. He's a dolt, a board, and probably not going to ever get my vote. But I am guilty of denying AGW for a further period of time because he was a proponent of the theory, and I was against him. That was my bad. He is on the right side of the issue even if he's on the wrong side of tactics or tact.

I'll still make fun of him if it amuses me, at his expense. But whether he was a ratfucker, literally or figuratively, means shit.

Very much. I think the old speak ins, speeches, signage, and a peaceful protest can help convey the message better. Or perhaps an organized concert.

Back on Al Gore again, eh?

I guess because Al Gore is a fallible human being, that means we don't need to worry about global warming.

Whew. What a relief.

Well, Gore is a liar when it comes to global warming. He has done the cause of raising the alarm some temporary good and permanent harm. By his lies he has made it that much more difficult for the truth to be heard, and the truth is that AGW is a genuine danger even IF the Antarctic ice cap isn't going to melt and drown FLA any time soon.

The science of AGW is sound and convincing. Exaggerations, chicken-little scenarios, and hockey sticks for which the data is lost or forged don't help the case. In the public imagination, they undercut it or even destroy it. The public reasons that if "the scientists"--and they count Gore as one---are false in one thing then they are false in all.

But no amount of human mendacity in service to "noble goals" can undo the realities. Glaciers are in retreat. Spring does come earlier. The arctic sea ice is also waning. CO2 levels are up, and the physics of CO2 includes an absorption spectrum that does help trap outgoing IR radiation from the earth that would otherwise more easily escape into space then and there.

I'm not going to discuss the 2000 election here. But that's what the crux of the Gore hate is about, I wager.

The movie was to target people who knew nothing or little about global warming. It was to bring the topic to the public, not a presentation to the scientific community, yet it was packed with that information.

He showed his own personal history because he's been at it for 30 years along with clean air, clean water, a host of other environmental concerns along with telecommunications and technology. Not so much. He regularly checked on production. We simply paper clipped him. We can argue that we would not have had the Mercury program without him, but honestly, it was a deal with the Devil.

In hindsight, we can shake our heads at the practice, but we have to remember that the Soviets were gobbling up men and technology from the Reich as quickly as we were. They basically ripped up entire factories, down to the smallest parts, and carted them back to Mother Russia to rebuild and upgrade their own forces. The scientists were given their own Faustian bargain: Work for us or spend the rest of your days in Siberia (if you even make it that far).

I Love Riots

Dodge the pepper bomb, rubber bullets from the gun,
Even if there were a bit of anarchistic punks,
Mace isnt wasted on college kids faces.
Woke up today and all I could say is:
(Chorus)
Man, I love college. (Hey!)
I love swat teams. (Hey!)
I love airborne toxins. (Hey!)
I love college. (Hey!)

You missed out the refrain, "Don't tase me bro!"

He was worse than that. If you want to be properly horrified you need to look into the SS run V-2 assembly facilities at Mittelbau-Dora.

I read about that. Most of the civilians killed by the V2's were people worked to death by the Germans to construct the rockets.

If it wasn't forged, it was lost.

What was lost? The original papers are very thorough about their methodology and data sets.

The "hockey stick" work is a most unfortunate misstep since it provides talking points for the other side, and talking points that cannot be shot down by simply insisting that all the science is perfect. it's not.

Ummm.... no one claims the proxy data is anything other than proxy data. Exactly what is the big issue you are alluding to without reference? The only thing that happened was the right wing lied long enough and loud enough that the gullible started to believe it.

It doesn't have to be, because the science is robust. The evidence is massive and overwhelming.

This is true.

Denier talking points are, unfortunately, some of them true. They're lies nonetheless, from a certain point of view,

No, they are pretty much all lies from start to finish really.

Sounds to me you have fallen for the misinformation spread by the denialsphere without investigating their points more fully, and have only grudgingly accepted the truth of AGW.

The Arctic IS melting. So is the Antarctic. But the timeline is nowhere near Gore's.

I have been among the first to realize that this AGW was for real. The good science is convincing. There's a lot of it. But unfortunately we lose in the public sphere when we try to insist that all the AGW science has been sound. Science doesn't work that way. People make mistakes. People lie. (Remember Piltdown man. I'd say it has a lot to do with the fact that people nowadays have a sort of disconnect with the horrors of that time in human history. Kinda like Jenjis Genghis Khan or the Crusades, it's just something that we see in history books and only black and white films, rather than something we experience in real life. Historical revision is a powerful force, especially when trying to blunt the blow of past atrocities or claim that modern ones are far worse.

"The Wave"

The movie “The Wave” is based on a novel by Morton Rhue and is based on a true story that happened in 1967 at Gordon High School in Palo Alto. The teacher starts an experiment with his students trying to show them how the Nazi regime was able to influence so many people and why no one stopped them.

Yes it is happening faster.

It's happening faster than scientists, most of whom are rightly conservative in their projections, projected. It's STILL happening a lot slower than what GORE was talking about. His movie "inconvenient truth" has been banned from classes in Britain following a court case in which it was established that he shaded the truth, to say the least.

The problems we face are real. They're coming faster than conservative (in the scientific sense) earlier warnings projected. The end state we can reach is worse than most people imagine.

But that doesn't make Gore's movie factual. It just isn't. He lied and quoted people as saying things they hadn't said. The movie is riddled with that sort of rubbish. We don't need that damned movie to make our case, and we shouldn't defend it. There is real evidence, and plenty of it.

In a few more years, at the rate things are going, we'll be able to point to the Northwest Passage as proof. The evidence keeps rolling in and it's already overwhelming. Why do we pin ourselves down defending bad data and bad science when we have good data and good science in profusion?

Actually let's go a little further. Denying AGW is either an act of blind faith in partisanship fueled by ignorance or simple evil. This will cause the deaths of billions. To understand the science, and not care, is simply evil. To lie to people in a way that will lead them to their doom is evil.

Could be, and I've not seen the movie. But I have to say that one of the things undercutting corporate attempts to tell me and other people my age that climate change isn't real is that we sat through years of the tobacco companies getting up in front of Congress and God and saying that cigarettes didn't addict or kill, as the data rolled in.

Is there a direct parallel? No, not really. But that is an early experience for me of being aware that people who had a financial or ideological stake would lie through their teeth about science and scientists.

Actually, there is a very strong parallel, including a very direct one, there are 'think tanks' (Advancement of Sound Science Coalition) and individuals (Spencer) active in the denial of AGW that were active in the tobacco misdirection.

Well, it's a long discussion, longer than I want to get into right now.

To point: there has been some concern about the growing involvement of religious ideas and organizations into the realm of science. I'm not talking here of creationism (thought ID is an example of the problem.)

Peter Woit has written about this on his blog, especially about the involvement of John Templeton, who helps fund FQXi. (Woit had a brief appearance in the TV show btw.)

When I saw the show highlighting the work of Lisi (who has written of his experience being taped for the show) it seemed to me that the show had taken a turn deep into the speculative, going for a romantic view of science, not a hard one.

There is more, perhaps later I will expand on these.

But every time I've looked into one of the claims of a "lie" in the film, it's turned out to be a completely false accusation. The science in "An Inconvenient Truth" is basically sound.

Allegations like that should be taken with shakers-full of salt. And if, which I do not in the least believe, they were true, they would have nothing to do with AGW, or with the scientific merit or lack thereof of Gore's movie. As to the movie, whatever faults it may have cannot dispel the merit of the scientific proof that AGW is real and dangerous.

So, I haven't seen the movie but my impression is that it was created to provide an outline of global warming for general audiences and reflects a lot of information current to the year of production. The main point was to inspire people and not to be taken as I stated a syllabus or perhaps a text book -- although it is based on scientific facts. I think the film's website says it better:

From director Davis Guggenheim, An Inconvenient Truth is a passionate and inspirational look at former Vice President Al Gore's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it. In this intimate portrait of Gore and his "travelling global warming show," Gore comes across as never before in the media - funny, engaging, open and intent on alerting citizens to this "planetary emergency" before it's too late.

By the way, nine 'errors' (each time the word error was used in the report it was surrounded by single quote) were found by the court and the film was not banned from being shown in Britain.

Here's a London Times article about the High Court Judge. He banned the film from being shown in schools because he feels Gore is an alarmist and the film was more political than scientific.

[Link: business.timesonline.co.uk...]

He says though that Gore is "broadly accurate". The Judge speculates on the drying of Chad Lake the loss of Kilimanjaro’s snows and dismisses manmade global warning as a reason, that climate scientists say there is no link. And that the polar bears are not drowning.

He ends the article with this, though:

Despite finding nine significant errors the judge said many of the claims made by the film were fully backed up by the weight of science. He identified “four main scientific hypotheses, each of which is very well supported by research published in respected, peer-reviewed journals and accords with the latest conclusions of the IPCC”.

In particular, he agreed with the main thrust of Mr Gore’s arguments: “That climate change is mainly attributable to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (‘greenhouse gases’).”

I actually made a generic post that did not mention you. You addressed it and I replied. I felt that LostLakerHiker could have been simply corrected and not vilified. I thought you joke was appropriate especially about the "froth". And I went with that. If you think that it is easy to take a stand defending an unpopular comment, reconsider. This was never against you, it was in defense of LostLakeHiker.

My issues, in this instance, run not so much to the right or left, but rather against ganging up on someone who posted a comment that was not accepted.

Your story is a perfect example of the kind of harm Gore has done. People naturally figure that if "they" have to fudge their case, then "they" are blowing smoke. It makes it just that much harder to penetrate to the truth of the matter.

Gore was right about this much---that AGW is real and it's dangerous.

Still suffering from the tragic events that took place in 2000. You know, the one where, they won.

They did the same with Kerry. To hear people talk about him now you'd think he must have murdered their best friend or something.

And why? Why still such an intensity of hatred for a failed POTUS candidate who even his own party was lukewarm about?

My theory is that it's the culmination of 90's hate radio and the mainstreaming of right wing eliminationist rhetoric about liberals.

Not saying who "deserved" to win but I think it's high time we scraped the Electoral College. It should be a straight popular vote.

I was on Gore's side on that one, but when he himself conceded it, it was clearly time for everyone to accept the result and move on. Agree with you on the popular vote.

Overall, our verdict is that the 9 points are not “errors” at all (with possibly one unwise choice of tense on the island evacuation point). But behind each of these issues lies some fascinating, and in some cases worrying, scientific findings and we can only applaud the prospect that more classroom discussions of these subjects may occur because of this court case.

Filtered Water, Milk Protein Concentrate, Corn Maltodextrin. Less than 2% of the Following: Soy Protein Isolate, Calcium Caseinate, Cocoa Powder (Processed with Alkali), Sucrose, Vitamin & Mineral Blend (Magnesium Phosphate, Potassium Citrate, Sodium Ascorbate, Sodium Chloride, Zinc Gluconate, dl-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Niacinamide, Manganese Gluconate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamin Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Chromium Chloride, Folic Acid, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin D3, Biotin, Sodium Molybdate, Sodium Selenite, Potassium Iodide, Phytonadione, Cyanocobalamin), Natural & Artificial Flavors, Short-Chain Fructooligosaccharides, High Oleic Safflower Oil, Cellulose Gum, Carrageenan, Cellulose Gel, Acesulfame Potassium, Gellan Gum, and Sucralose.

The only protein it contain is concentrated milk protein. Corn Maltodextrin us a carbohydrate. The rest, less than 2 percent, is pure filler garbage. And it comes in a rather thick plastic container.

I don't watch what I eat or consider myself an athlete. I think if one did they should avoid gum. They use it to suspend the soy in drinks like this. And as a thickner.

Gellan gum is a water-soluble polysaccharide produced by Sphingomonas elodea, a bacterium.

It's a polymer.

If I had to take a stab at it, I'd guess nuclear. I may be recalling this incorrectly, but it seemed as though things were more or less "normal" around the time of the boy's birth. Whatever it was that happened seems to have turned the whole planet into a wasteland in just a few years.

Would an environmental catastrophe that epic in scope manifest itself that quickly?

He has repeated a number of denialist errors that exposes a lack of research. My only response has been a desire to correct those errors. I certainly have not treated anyone (today) like a heretic.

Agreed. I don't think I'm in error, but you've argued fair.

I read the novel first and then saw the movie before it disappeared from theaters here. The book was more graphic than the movie, but the movie really drove the point home about just how far humanity had fallen.

What's your take on what caused the world-wide catastrophe?

Ron Paul!

"Myoplex" is a brand that is applied to several different products from EAS. But yes, they're not really a good deal, though EAS used to have one of the better reps in the body building scene (due partly to marketing, but also a bit to some good work early on.) You must be looking at their meal replacement stuff, which of course has a mix of items in it.

I preferred, when I bought the big jugs of protein, to get (from the San Diego area originally) Designer Whey, as I could get pure whey protein in unflavored variety, and when found on sale is a decent deal.

Most MRPs are not of a lot of use to adults, since we are normally looking to reduce our calorie intake and frankly the MRPs don't do that usually because they don't reduce appetite. However, for the young male who needs to add calories to his diet MRPs can be useful if they add them between their other meals. Well, that's assuming the male isn't already overweight.

Pure whey protein is good stuff for the body.

Wait, how can you agree if you don't think you're in error? That makes no sense, either tell us how it is Gore lied or admit you are, in fact, in error. Blaming Al Gore for prolonging climate denial in people who hate Al Gore is a tautological non-thought.

It's also not very bootstrappy, at the very least a person should be able to take responsibility for their own point of view. Al Gore didn't lie, he didn't cause you to lie about his purported mendacity, nothing he did makes it "harder to penetrate to the truth of the matter."

Yes, people feel strongly about being bullshitted. They're against it.

Here's me with my late-night half-drunk outrage...

Another slap on the wrist if anything for this piece of garage. What respectable publication thinks that it is "just okay" or, you know, "in good fun" to let one of their own get away with calling Mexicans "beaners" (does McCain think he is Carlos Mencia or something?). I would get fired from my own job if I opened my mouth in such a manner. Calling British people faggots is really just morally inept in any case; yet this subhuman will continue to churn out the opt-eds as those who pay his salary will surely turn a blind eye to his obvious hate-mongering. That is the tragedy in it all, that he retains no actual responsibility for the terrible things that he says. Charles, you are doing the right thing by calling him out on it, and I commend you for it.

As a general rule, if the SPLC has an issue with you, there's a good chance that you're a slimy racist or an apologist for them.

In those days, lots of Ivy league college men were trying to get out of going and they did. He could have joined the reserves like many of his friends did, but he didn't.

He didn't have a dangerous position per se. He was a journalist, but he went and deserves that credit.

I've never said anything negative about his military service but lets not pin a medal on a senators son for spending 5 months in Vietnam carrying a camera. He didn't pull a traitor act like Kerry, which is why there is still so much animosity about the man, but he wasn't a hero either.

A couple of years ago I submitted a piece to the American Stinker on what the Right needed to do to regain influence in academia (hint, the exact opposite of what they've been doing since 2006.) I pointed out that conservatives could absolutely forget being taken seriously in academia as long as they were in bed with the anti-evolution cults. The editor told me I should read Michael Behe's book. I already have, in detail. The scene on the right now is like watching a train wreck.
