So, her qualifications are:

1. Jesus person. There is a difference between being a Christian - you know, humble spiritual follower of Christ who despises violence, and a politician who advertises with guns.

2. Serious gun nut.

3. Doesn’t like taxes.

OK, so let’s compare to actual qualifications for leadership:

1. Education and experience that would make a good leader.

2. Understanding of policy.

3. Policy ideas of one’s own.

4. The ability to communicate said ideas and explain why they are good ones.

5. Have them actually be good ideas.

6. The type of moral fiber that understands that actual faith is an internal thing and not an external advertisement to cheapen both it and oneself with.

Yet, this is ultimately why America is so very screwed up and a shining example of why our democracy is broken. Too many yo-yuks elect other yo-yuks.

They are legal any state in which National Firearms Act of 1934 (which mandated federal registration and one time tax on full auto, short (under 16”) barrel rifles and shotugns and suppressors) are legal. Also, no full auto firearms are legal for civilians that are manufactured after 1986, so Thompsons like this one are grandfathered and probably cost more than many automobiles.

It coulda been worse!

re: #15 Aceofwhat?

AFAIK, machine guns and sawed-off guns are illegal in AZ.

Tommy guns are ‘submachine guns’.

Not true. Machine guns, short barreled rifles and shotguns, and silencers are perfectly legal in AZ. You have to jump through a lot of hoops, pay the ATF $200 tax, get the local Sheriff to sign off, etc. For machine guns, you also have to find one. The supply is fixed as of 1986, so they cost anywhere from $10k to $30k on up.

The laws vary by state. Here’s a map of the country indicating in which states silencers and machine guns are legal.

Also, note that only two murders have been committed with a legally owned machine gun since the 1934 NFA regulations went into effect. The first in 1988 apparently was committed by an off-duty cop in a drug deal gone wrong. This is out of about 250,000 legally owned MGs.

“Until last week, I didn’t have a problem with the Pledge. However last week I discovered that the Pledge was created by the progressives in the Wilson administration in order to create a stronger backing of the people for the unconstitutional actions of the Wilson administration. I still love this country but is it the right thing to do to repeat something the progressives created? It also answers another question I have had from the time I was a kid. The bible states that one should not put country above God, but that is exactly what the Pledge is doing. It seems the Pledge may have been intended to make country the God.”

Could that be something they learned from Beck?

I didn’t factcheck this but here’s this on Pamela Gorman

State legislator who supported Scientology also supports global warming denial

Arizona State Representative Pamela Gorman (R-District 6, Anthem) was one of several legislators who accepted gifts from the Church of Scientology and helped promote bills for Scientology’s Citizens Commission on Human Rights.

She is also on the Legislative Advisory Board to the Heartland Institute, publisher of Environmental & Climate News, a publication that is still, as of its February 2007 issue, arguing that global warming is mythical. This issue contains articles such as “Greenland Coldest in 60 Years” and “Little Ice Age May Return Soon,” and contains a set of graphs of global satellite temperatures on p. 7 that attributes 1998’s high temperatures to El Nino. The Heartland Institute’s past articles have included titles like “Eight Reasons Why ‘Global Warming’ is a Scam” (2003), “National Geographic Promotes Global Warming Myths” (2004), and “Michael Crichton is Right!” (2005)

(Rep. Gorman’s Blogger profile lists “Anthem Shrugged” as one of her favorite books. Ayn Rand wrote books called Anthem and Atlas Shrugged, but it appears Rep. Gorman has combined them. She has apparently been too busy to blog much; she posted twice in January 2006 and has only posted again this month.)

Arizona legislators sponsoring bills for Scientology front group

The Arizona Republic reports today that a number of Arizona legislators have been sponsoring bills on behalf of Scientology’s Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), an anti-psychiatry group. Several of them have taken trips to Scientology events at the Celebrity Center in Los Angeles to meet with John Travolta…

Co-sponsored by Pamela Gorman.

Rep. Pamela Gorman (R-District 6, Anthem). A member of “Pure Heart Christian Fellowship,” the Arizona Women’s Shooting Association (she holds a concealed carry permit), and Concerned Women for America. She’s on the Appropriations, Transportation, and Ways and Means committees.

re: #123 albusteve

this border thing is getting blown out of proportion by both left and right

It is and it isn’t. Immigration isn’t a problem, in my opinion. The problem is that control of all the illegal activities on the border has been taken by Mexican cartels. Within the last half hour I just heard a third-hand report of someone seeing Mexicans who had been lynched, hanging from trees near the border. Last week I heard about two hikers from Tucson who called 911 for help, and were dead before help arrived. The week before that I heard about a major fire that was set by “UBCs” (undocumented border crossers). None of this stuff makes it into the news, except the fire, if you know where to look.

I certainly don’t want to vote for people like Pamela Gorman to solve the problems. I want to take the business of immigration away from the cartels, by blanket amnesty and free immigration if necessary, just like I want to take the drug business away from the cartels by legalizing marajuana.

I will say this: once you have a contract and plans, try not to change anything…. that’s where the term ’ money pit ’ originated. Get the changes done before the work starts.

[a bare set with a creaky college rocking chair, Cato snoozing, open book on lap, half-smoked cigar in ashtray, a bottle of 60-year-old whiskey and a tumbler with melted ice on a side table]

Cato [snores, then wakes with a start]:

“Wait, what? Pull the string?”

[fumbles for cigar, starts to light it, puts it back down, calls “Haku!” twice, a dog appears, stage left]

Cato: “There you are!”

[Haku stretches, yawns, makes a play-bow, then sits to get his head scratched]

I don’t understand how it’s going to work, actually. Think of the discovery process… the state of AZ will be proffering so many pieces of evidence showing dereliction of duty by the feds, so many criminal acts they’ve had to prosecute, so much money they’ve had to spend, etc, etc…
the evidence of harm suffered due to failure to secure AZ’s border will be endless.
Rather than the defendant, AZ will end up looking like the plaintiff.

that’s why BO is stalling and waiting for the issue to get kicked up to the SC….the feds will not suit…bet me

Lets see, whats the ammo cost? $3 a round? She could have fed a lot of hungry people with what she wasted taking target practice for the camera. Isn’t that what Christians are supposed to do? ha.

Now by that standard, you will condemn all Christians. Even the best of them spend something on themselves, and not just enough to buy one hair shirt and a mud hut.

Christian charity in America adds up to serious money. How many of us who are not that observant and could fairly be called secularized, contribute 10 percent of our income to charity? Or 5 percent? Frivolous use of five or ten percent of our income on vacations, fine dining, or a blast at the firing range doesn’t give us any guilt trip, and we aren’t even tithing before treating ourselves.

There are real grounds to be opposed to this woman’s ad and her campaign. She’s in some way tied to Scientology. That’s enough right there. But then what about the ad itself? Without reading anything into it, there’s nothing at all in it, not really. She’s cute and she can pull the trigger. Since there’s no target, we don’t have to worry whether she’s hitting or missing, and likewise, she doesn’t advance any cause that if elected she’ll work toward.

She’s running, so it would seem, on the grounds that hey I’m kinda cute and it’s fun to run, so why not? This is no way to pick a Congress.

But she’s not starving children by shooting that campaign commercial, and she’s not shooting Mexicans, and she’s not advocating either.

I like guns and knives and in my travels I found thisRaphine Va off of I=81Just checked up and it’s still there, hence the link. The Thompson is with a Mauser machine pistol and they also had (don’t see it now) the $200 tax stamp posted with the tommy. Very interesting and impressive collection on the walls, and it’s not knock off BS, but legitimate collector pieces. If you know what you’re looking at, you’ll be impressed. Yes, you can own a machine gun/pistol.

Don’t worry. If they ever build a border fence the full 2000 miles in a couple of years after it’s finished the extremists will say it was built to keep Americans inside or from escaping the USA.

[spotlight slowly up to full power, center stage]

[a bare set with a creaky college rocking chair, Cato snoozing, open book on lap, half-smoked cigar in ashtray, a bottle of 60-year-old whiskey and a tumbler with melted ice on a side table]

Cato [snores, then wakes with a start]:

“Wait, what? Pull the string?”

[fumbles for cigar, starts to light it, puts it back down, calls “Haku!” twice, a dog appears, stage left]

Cato: “There you are!”

[Haku stretches, yawns, makes a play-bow, then sits to get his head scratched]

Cato: “I had this dream, boy. I was all covered in bits of string and yarn, and I couldn’t get up. Then I heard a voice saying ‘Pull the red one!’ So I did. And the whole web fell away, and it was just me and this string, so I pulled, but it wouldn’t give. Then I started following it, and I went through about five volumes of horrible” [shudders] “adventures on some island someplace. And at the end of it all was - no! It’s too awful! But I can trust you, right, boy? You won’t tell anyone what I’m about to say! At the end was…the head of L. Ron Hubbard in a jar.”

[weeps]

re: #63 webevintage

Of course the comments are what you would expect, but this one is odd:
“Until last week, I didn’t have a problem with the Pledge. However last week I discovered that the Pledge was created by the progressives in the Wilson administration in order to create a stronger backing of the people for the unconstitutional actions of the Wilson administration. I still love this country but is it the right thing to do to repeat something the progressives created? It also answers another question I have had from the time I was a kid. The bible states that one should not put country above God, but that is exactly what the Pledge is doing. It seems the Pledge may have been intended to make country the God.”

Could that be something they learned from Beck?

Now this is funny. There you have a direct admission to having no actual beliefs or preferences at all, except that “progressive is bad”. If the only thing you dislike about something is that people you don’t like like it, you have serious issues.

This law is a nativist, racist response to the Federal Govt. Going right along with the times. Bad Govt.!! Bad!! States Rights!!! Defend where this came from.

And we’ve decided that Prohibition will work this time, no matter how many people we have to lock up or kill.

Yeah.

I happen to think the nation-state is a relic that has served out its time and must be replaced by something better if humanity is to survive.

I also happen to think that humanity is not destined to survive.

Good luck with that one. I don’t see anything worthwhile replacing the good ol’ US of A, or Israel, or Australia, or Canada for that matter, anytime soon. The UN is a cesspool of Third World dictators and corruption.

Here’s a story I came across at work that I had to post. It’s public so I’m not going to get in trouble. And it really is a worthy story:

Keel to be laid for USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112)

WASHINGTON - Symbolically recognizing the beginning of ship construction, the Navy will authenticate the keel for future USS Michael Murphy, June 18, at General Dynamics-Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath, Maine. Participants will include Lt. Michael Murphy’s mother, Maureen; father, Dan; and brother, John, who will confirm the keel is laid “straight and true.”

Designated DDG 112, the ship is named in honor of Navy Lt. Michael Murphy, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan, June 28, 2005.

A Navy SEAL, Murphy led a four-man team tasked with finding a key Taliban leader in the mountainous terrain near Asadabad, Afghanistan, when they came under fire from a much larger enemy force with superior tactical position. Mortally wounded while exposing himself to enemy fire, Murphy deliberately left his position of cover to get a clear signal to communicate with his headquarters. While being shot at repeatedly, Murphy calmly provided his unit’s location and requested immediate support for his element. He returned to his cover position and continued fighting until succumbing to his wounds.

“As the 62nd ship of the class, I believe DDG 112 will be the finest destroyer yet delivered,” said Capt. Pete Lyle, DDG 51 class program manager within the Navy’s Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. “There couldn’t be a more fitting tribute to Lt. Murphy’s sacrifice.”

SNIP

At 62 ships, The Arleigh Burke-class is the latest in a USN tradition of big destroyer classes. But even so, 62 is closing in on the 71 ships of the the WWI-area Wikes-class. And Bath Iron Works is still building DDs, after more than 100 years at it.

Yep, securing a 1969 mile border is so easy. /

yes, it is…there is no will for it…this immigration thing will break America in half if nothing else does, and I have the law on my side…it’s law, Constitutional law…get back with me about your disdain for the TP and therir regard for the Constitution….what?, you only want to enforce those parts you agree with?

Without dogs, radar, searchlights, and machine gun towers, I mean. We’ve tried that “Virtual Fence” thingie. Disastrous.

re: #423 HoosierHoops

I don’t agree at all with Cato on this Thread…The whole concept of national lines being obsolete ect..
How many American’s have spilled their blood for our imaginary lines in the sand?

Just because masses of blood have been spilt for something imaginary does not make the imaginary thing real.

Think: Protestant vs. Catholic, Muslim vs. Jew, white vs. black, “us” vs. “them”.

At some point humanity must either outgrow its illusions or die.

Heh.

So Hoops, where do you think LeBron is going? Maimi? Stephen Smith is reporting it’s a done deal. Chris Bosh, LeBron, and D. Wayde in Miami next year.

I’m completely conflicted on this…On one hand..The Miami thing would be a great dynasty…I can’t see him and Rose in Chicago..They would have to trade Rose in 2 years..I think a move to one of the worst teams in the NBA, The Knicks would be a career ender…
Generally..I think he should take the max deal, stay in Cleveland and build on his legacy…Bring Bosh and a shooting guard

You don’t even begin to understand the point, if your answer is any indication.
It’s a no-win situation for AZ democrats, because the Feds’ deplorable handling of the border will end up on trial in a lawsuit.

The FED has been under both political parties for many years…..

“Borders” are notional lines on a map, which is a notional representation of reality.

I am against them as a matter of pure philosophy and humanism. Secular humanism.

There, I said it.

I can’t imagine LeBron sharing the spotlight with D. Wayde. You know the 3 of them will always be looking at their paycheck, and one or more will be grumbling.

Note that none of those things are borders.

Until humanity evolves into incorporeal spheres of light and warmth, borders help us to run multiple experiments concurrently. For example, US > Belarus.

They also permit us to choose a set of borders within which we can make our own happiness…i wouldn’t enjoy Syria, for example, as much as I enjoy the US. It’s not bad to create areas where things run differently…people are different.

They are quite aggressive. We threw a troll ino their tank and they tore it apart in seconds. But the troll toxins killed one of the sea bass, too. So we need a steady supply of innocent victims to feed them to help them regain their strength. >:D

Likewise. French is more fluid at first blush, but it’s not half as flexible.

Some europeans write songs in english to hit a broader market…many of them do it because it’s so damn flexible…

I thought she was smart and Charming today.. What was that line she had today when somebody asked her what she was doing on Christmas day?
Something like,’ What all good jews do..We go to a Chinese restaurant’
She brought the house down…
I think she could be a bridge between the polar views on the Court…
I like this woman

With a movie before, after, both, or neither?

I almost always hit one of the local Chinese restaurants on Christmas Day. Last Christmas I went by myself, and had a great “What a country!” laugh when I realized that this Jewish guy was (a) eating in a Chinese restaurant, (b) on Christmas, (c) surrounded by a crowd that was mostly black and Hispanic, and (d) reading a secular humanist magazine.

you know I can’t help but notice a trend… pols used to pose with tanks & stuff to show strength. now the trend is personal hardware… interesting display of lack of faith in the gubermint.

Tanks as a campaign prop died the day the Dukakis in the M1 premiered. Trying to out-tough a war veteran just doesn’t work.
