In the immortal words of Jeff Sessions:

"Well, first you look at the Constitution as a whole...The Constitution says you can't inflict cruel and unusual punishment. Well, every state had the death penalty. It wasn't unusual. It has to be both."

... This is a United States senator. He has no fucking clue about what is in the constitution, apparently.

(The GOP is still contorting over the Thurgood Marshall thing. It's a day out, and nobody has been able to cite a single case typifying Marshall's "activism".)

They're obstructionist and proud of it. Jim DeMint wrote a piece for the National Review recently entitled "The Constitution of No" To save you reading time-the Bill of Rights spends its time on what the government can't do. Therefore its all about limiting government. And that's as it should be.

Huh? Remember the verb "to Bork"? And then there was the hate session against Clarence Thomas, including transparently bogus sexual harassment charges. What took the cake was the time senator Howard Metzenbaum held up hearings until something like 2AM so as to prevent the mass of women who had worked with Thomas from testifying. He then noted the late hour, and gave this reason for why their testimony should not be heard [ever]: it's late, [by his doing], and we don't need their testimony anyway; we already know what they'll say.

Now this does not make today's spectacle anything to be proud of. When Senator Grassley couldn't come up with the word "unalienable", and substituted "individual", talking about rights and God-given rights, it was a hell of a 'senior moment'. Give that man a gold watch and a pension or something and send him on a cruise.

Because you can't give him a clue.

And the question yesterday was...are you in favor of televising Supreme Court Hearings?

No! No! NO!

So to those that say the Democrats were as bad at grandstanding when Bush nominated candidates were being confirmed for the Supreme Court.....I just have two words.....Joe Biden

Vice President Joe Biden makes the following statement to John Roberts during Roberts` confirmation hearing: ''Can a microscopic tag be implanted in a person's body to track his every movement? There is actual discussion about that. You will rule on that, mark my words, before your [lifetime] tenure is over. Can brain scans be used to determine whether a person is inclined toward criminality or violent behaviour? You will rule on that!''

That doesn't matter. The Senate still has a role to advise and consent. Nothing in the Constitution says that role disappears just because a nominee likely will be confirmed.

God love him, the only admitted athiest in congress, Pete Stark (D-CA) lets a "Minuteman" speak at one of his town halls, then destroys him:

"The minutemen want to have something to say," Stark says as one of the border security advocates begins to ask a question. "Who are you going to kill today?"

After brushing off the congressman’s remark, the activist said, "I want to know why the federal government is not doing anything more to seal the borders of this country?"

"Well, we can’t get enough minutemen armed," Stark answered. "We’d like to. Get all the minutemen armed so they can stop shooting people here." [...]

The man then interrupted Stark, telling the congressman, "this a very serious matter and you’re sitting there making fun of it."

"I don’t have to make fun of you sir," Stark responded, "you make a fine job [of it] all by yourself."

I hate to disagree with you, but here goes. That's one of the least thought-provoking VDH articles in recent memory, except for one line...

The reality of Barack Obama is that he was an inexperienced community organizer with an undistinguished record as a Senate newcomer. A perfect storm of popular anger at eight years of George Bush, a lackluster John McCain campaign, Obama's landmark candidacy as an African-American, a disingenuous campaign promising centrist and bipartisan governance, and the financial meltdown in 2008 got the relatively untried and unknown Obama elected.

He seems to be saying he got elected because he's black [and lucky]. The ultimate "affirmative action" whine.

i respect your opinion. i think VDH buried that thought in the middle of many others, and i did not see it as the "big thought" i'd pick out of the piece. I thought the "big thought" had to do more with the ironic nature of the circumstances Obama find himself in. More along the lines of being hoisted with his own petard. VDH cited Obama's withering criticism of Bush over katrina that was now being directed at him over HIS handling of a crisis in the Louisiana area. And since Obama made it from anonymity to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave so easily and quickly, he may have thought the job of POTUS was a bit easier than it turned out to be.

Candidacy = landmark. Hard to argue that point.

It's in a list of what "got the relatively untried and unknown Obama elected." So that and the bad luck of McCain got Obama elected. Combined with calling him a would-be god and a headstrong tragic figure, it's just bloviating on the tired old theme of "When you were running, you criticized the president. Now you are president, and are receiving criticism." There's nothing insightful there. And the Greek column thing is so old. As long as you don't give them an easy to reason to vote against you, then you're set. So you have no reason to be forthright. No reason to give any kind of opinion at all.

It's prevent defense. It's not her fault. It's just the way it is.

Lou Engle predicts the beginning of Christian Persecution in the US.

A 5-4 Supreme Court decision Monday requiring Christian campus groups on public universities to accept gay students as members and leaders may signal the beginning of religious persecution in the U.S., says prayer leader Lou Engle.

“This is the first time in U.S. history where the Supreme Court has actually ruled that gender rights now trump religious rights, which means this is the beginning of the possible coming harassment and persecution of the church because it’s going to be clear that the true church will take a stand only on the Word of God,” Engle, founder of TheCall prayer movement, said today. “So these campuses will find out who the real Christians are, who is willing to take a stand and risk their status with the school as a club.”

Not to o sure it's other people's tax dollars, but the tax dollars of the parents of a non-public school attending child does not have to pay. IOW, instead of paying taxes that equal the sum of tuition in a non-public school.

There is a difference.

Public schools aren't doing the job. Private schools are- and educating kids is the goal.

Tell some mother in DC with three kids her kids won't get the education she wants for them because the teachers unions put their agenda over the agenda of educating kids.

There is a reason school vouchers are popular ideas among parents in poor areas.

Doctor testing drug to ‘prevent’ lesbianism, interest in ‘male careers’

Dr. Maria New has a new strategy for treating unborn fetuses: the use of a potentially dangerous steroid aimed at preventing a rare congenital disorder that affects the adrenal gland, potentially consigning the future child to a lifetime regime of drugs.

It also prevents "some of the symptoms of [this disorder] in girls, namely ambiguous genitalia. Because the condition causes overproduction of male hormones in the womb, girls who are affected tend to have genitals that look more male than female, though internal sex organs are normal."

Dr. New offers pregnant women dexamethasone, a risky steroid aimed at female fetuses that may have this disorder. Many exposed to dexamethasone through this off-label use are not being enrolled in controlled clinical trials.

And yes, it gets worse. As columnist Dan Savage points out, Dr. New is also exploring the use of dexmethasone's effects on future fetuses' desires to explore "male careers" or have disinterest in becoming mothers.

I think you are a conservative, as am I. If I am wrong I apologize. I have only been following this site for a few months but I have impressions of some contributors. I am always ready to admit it when I am wrong.

I'm a conservative. Please model yourself after me.

I'm a right winger. I got a certificate from Nimed that says so :)

And I'm a nihilist, as Ludwig can attest.

Interesting how some Lizards can put labels on us so easily. You and I know each other more or less on a superficial personal level, we've exchanged emails, phone calls and spent a few days together, face to face, and we know a number of private things about each other, and I would never peg you as a nihilist any more than I suspect you would not call me a right winger.

And one wonders why I "yawn" and "whatever" and laugh a lot from this end of the keyboard. Reality is real.

How you take on a crowd is go right at the ringleader and embarrass them in front of their minions. People think you're cRaZy and back off.

re: #240 Mich-again

We had a recall election in our community a couple years back and I got pestered by a couple guys on the way into the polls to vote for the recall. After 3 polite requests to leave me alone, I finally told them to get the F* away from me. When I came out of the polls there was a neighbor who is a policeman and a mob waiting at my car to continue with the pestering. At which point I told my neighbor the cop to get the F* away me and my car. They all looked at him to see if he would arrest me but he knew better than to try. ha. Called em all assholes as I drove away.

The neighbor cop never bothered me again. ha.

WTH?
Because you told them to fuck off?
Hell, I'd be sitting in jail with you, I'm not very nice to people who annoy me on purpose.

OK then, I just wanted to make sure there was a distinction between Charter Schools and Private Schools. Even after 15 years or so here in MI, so many people still think that Charter Schools are Private Schools, not Public Schools.

On SNL once, there was a OB doctor (Played by the greatest of all SNL Players) who interestingly had delivered all girls in his entire career.

Of course, from some of them, he had to remove their penises.

Yes she's a real doctor, and I'm not sure that this thing hasn't been entirely overblown. As I read it, she has a therapy for a endocrine system abnormality. Something that might be found in utero and treated, not a treatment that women would randomly get to insure that their daughters will want to produce grandchildren in a timely fashion. But, I don't know a whole lot about it.
