Evangelist Lou Engle: Supreme Court Decision Could Be a Sign of the End Times

Religion • Views: 15,789

Far right evangelist Lou Engle (last featured at LGF for supporting the criminalization of homosexuality, and saying there’s a Biblical basis for executing gays) is whining and seething about the Supreme Court decision that Christian groups on public campuses must allow the dreaded ghey amongst their pious gatherings.

Engle thinks this may be the persecution of Christians foretold in the Bible as a sign of the End Times, because his followers are being deprived of their God-given right to be vile medieval-minded bigots: Prayer Leader: Supreme Court Decision May Signal Onset of Church Persecution.

A 5-4 Supreme Court decision Monday requiring Christian campus groups on public universities to accept gay students as members and leaders may signal the beginning of religious persecution in the U.S., says prayer leader Lou Engle.

“This is the first time in U.S. history where the Supreme Court has actually ruled that gender rights now trump religious rights, which means this is the beginning of the possible coming harassment and persecution of the church because it’s going to be clear that the true church will take a stand only on the Word of God,” Engle, founder of TheCall prayer movement, said today. “So these campuses will find out who the real Christians are, who is willing to take a stand and risk their status with the school as a club.”

[…]

Engle said his group is challenging students to begin campus prayer groups and stand against pressure to change Christian organizations’ statements of faith.

“We’re going to head into this thing and seek to raise up a standard of a radical stand for God, for truth,” Engle said. “We’re going to fuel prayer all the more. It’s going to be a great time for true Daniels to arise and get an opportunity to proclaim the word of Christ in the midst of this. I think the darkness is always is going to bring out the best in the light.”

As I mentioned last time, it’s important to realize that Engle is not some fringe lunatic ranting away on a street corner. He’s very influential within the Republican Party; he hosts “prayercasts” attended by top GOP politicians including former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, and is involved in many other high profile political activities.

Christians are being persecuted in Sudan, the Congo, the Arab world and Nigeria. They are not being persecuted in California.

You can raise a lot of money being a victim and this is a tailor made cause for the religious and not so religious right.

Cynical, but true. In 24-48 hours you're email inbox will be full with requests asking for help for persecuted California Christians.

Christian Martyr Movement Leader Blesses Gingrich & Huckabee

Leaders on the Christian right have been giving such speeches for decades, but the two-day Rock Church conference was not business as usual. Rather, it showcased the rapid reconfiguration of the Christian right around the rising, highly militant but poorly understood charismatic wing of the new Christian right, a movement which includes both Ted Haggard and Sarah Palin.)

One point of the spear for the new Christian right is an intense, raspy-voiced man who presided over the June 5, 2009 Rock Church event, layed hands on Mike Huckabee, and pledged the commitment of his prayer warriors to Huckabee and Gingrich was Lou Engle, founder of TheCall - which played a significant role in the push to pass the anti-gay marriage Proposition Eight in the lead up to the November 4, 2008 presidential election.
...
The November 1, 2008 TheCall San Diego event was the capstone event for the pro-Proposition Eight, anti-gay marriage push in California prior to the November 4, 2008 presidential election. Towards the end of the event, which attracted an estimated 30,000 attendees to San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium despite sweltering heat, TheCall founder Lou Engle, and his disciple Eddie Brown, as captured in footage taken at TheCall San Diego by documentary film-maker Michael W. Wilson made calls, from onstage before thousands of impassioned followers, for acts of Christian martyrdom. Engle has in the recent past declared that decades of legalized abortion since Roe v. Wade have incurred a blood debt which demands to be paid in blood.

11 What, me worry?  Wed, Jun 30, 2010 2:29:50pm

Unfortunately, there are Christians who feel they haven't had their share of persecution and have some demented jealousy about it so they have to make stuff up. God wasn't this obsessed about gays. Really, He wasn't.

And yet, the two Christian towns in Israel, Nazareth and more importantly Bethlehem, have seen their populations almost drained of Christians because of radical Islam. Same goes for Christian Africans.

Hey Engle, have you fought the good fight for the Black and Arab Christians?

I think it's interesting that Kagan is getting drilled for not allowing a group that discriminates against gays (the military) on the Harvard campus because it violated Harvard's anti-discrimination policies and then the very same day the court she is being appointed to upholds the right to do just that.

I love how the far right Christians always pass over the Gospels and go straight to the OT when they spout their wisdom.

It's the fact that I believe the Christians have a tendency to interpret the Old Testament, and they don't really know what they're talking about because it's not their book. If they liked our book so much they could have included it in their book. And they didn't. We as Jews respect the fact that it's their book, and we don't interpret the New Testament, so I don't want them interpreting ours. And that we Jews -- there's lots of us around -- if they need the book interpreted for them, we'll do it. If the price is right.

A 5-4 Supreme Court decision Monday requiring Christian campus groups on public universities to accept gay students as members and leaders may signal the beginning of religious persecution in the U.S., says prayer leader Lou Engle.

The Supreme Court did no such thing. They just said that an organization has the right not to give official sanction or fund such a group.

You bring up a great point. J. Gresham Machen, often thought of as the father of modern American fundamentalism, was deeply opposed to public school prayers, precisely because he recognized that it was necessarily going to be a dumbed down civil religion kind of prayer. He also recognized the inherent danger of the Constantinian Christendom model, both to the civil society and to the church. Neither is served well when either get into each others business.

Any odds on the chances that Muslim groups on campus will be held to the same rules?

Do you think Muslims are new to America? Devote Muslims plan their classes around prayer. Quite a few Muslims are secular and don't follow a payer schedule. Those that do send their children to Muslim schools and if there not available their excused. In Islam there is quite a number of instances where payer schedules don't have to be followed.

End time hysteria (been there, done that, bought the stupid T-shirt) is, at its heart, a deeply selfish impulse. Every generation believes it's their generation, just like every group feels that it's their group that has the unique insight into world affairs. It's as old as human history and will be with us as long as there's an us in existence.

At this point it might be easier, and faster, to list the heavy hitters in the GOP not dripping in far right extremist stank. It will be a short list, maybe not take more than ten fingers-worth.

So, the people who protest the GOP isn't rolling in far right extremism - let's see your candidates. These would be individuals who do not support (or ignore the speakers of) far right religious soirees, have spoken out about racism within the party, aren't knee jerk homophobes, can converse without evoking scripture, don't believe or remain silent about the POTUS being a foreign citizen, aren't running scared about imaginary commies, and don't yammer about taking up arms and refreshing "the tree" with blood.

I have yet to see any. I see candidates who either look the other way, feign ignorance, or go with the party's flow.

OT: LGF, get out of my head!

I went to sleep earlier than usual last night and had a strange dream that woke me up.

I was in a car on this multi-lane highway approaching a toll station, and there’s a roadblock set up. There’s a lady in a red sports car in front of me that almost plows into a cop who’s standing in front of a toll booth, causing me to almost rear end her.

The roadblock is taking a long time, so I walk over to this grassy area on the side where there’s a pay phone. I hit the coin return and quarters start falling to the ground from the bottom of the phone. I bend down to pick them up and they’re all wet.

Suddenly, I’m on the pay phone with albusteve—we’ve obviously been having a conversation for several minutes, because we’re both laughing and he says, "...Yeah, and how about getting kicked in the nuts?? LOL" and I answer, "Oh man, yeah, my son told me that really hurts. LOL" Fade to next scene.

I’m back in the car waiting for the roadblock to be over. Someone in a black vehicle comes tearing down between all the stopped vehicles and the police pounce on him and take him away. Traffic starts moving again, but we’re being diverted to the right by a cop standing behind yellow crime scene tape and using a vuvuzela to direct traffic. Yes, a vuvuzela. The right turn is really sharp and I run over a pylon (didn’t see them till then), and I’m worried that the cop is gonna get mad and give me a ticket. He doesn’t. I go two blocks down (following more yellow police tape & pylons), come to an intersection, and start to turn left to get back to my original route, and then... I wake up.

My first thoughts upon waking: WTF? Wet quarters? albusteve?? A cop directing traffic with a freaking vuvuzela??? Apparently seeing people here talk about the World Cup and the vuvuzelas got stuck in my subconscious along with the douche thread, but I have no idea what the roadblock & wet quarters were about or why my brain chose to have albusteve make a cameo appearance.

If I keep hanging out here I’m gonna end up needing therapy.

re: #58 reuven

Nobody's mentioned it here, so I'll do it:

A 5-4 Supreme Court decision Monday requiring Christian campus groups on public universities to accept gay students as members and leaders may signal the beginning of religious persecution in the U.S., says prayer leader Lou Engle.

The Supreme Court did no such thing. They just said that an organization has the right not to give official sanction or fund such a group.

Yet this is alleged to be the literal beginning of the End. This highlights one of the most striking characteristics of the religious right: The extreme paranoia and hyperbole with which they assert their agenda. We see this over and over.

The most famous case dates all the way back to 1974, when the FCC received a petition to keep religious broadcasters from using channels that had been reserved for educational use. In the minds (such as they are) of fundamentalists, this became a campaign by Madalyn Murray O'Hair to ban religious broadcasting. O'Hair was not a party to this at all.
This entirely false claim (usually minus the now long-dead O'Hair but sometimes not) continues to circulate in paranoid e-mails and sermons to this day. As documented at the link, there are many many variations and offshoots, even though the FCC does not have either the statutory or constitutional power to prohibit religious broadcasting.

That word is a genuine problem for Jews. You're not supposed to attempt to pronounce the tetragrammatron (and, in practice, it hasn't been pronounced since the destruction of the second temple.)

True, but the word "Jehovah" has an even more troubled history. It is a German scholastic attempt to come up with a pronunciation of YHWH based on the insertion of the vowels from Elohim and Adonai, or something equally cryptic. And because the German language pronounces "j" as "y" and has no equivalent for English or Hebrew "w", the English speakers who read the German scholars and didn't know German took over the "j" at the beginning of the word and the "v" along with it.

There is no historical, linguistic, or religious reason for the pronunciation "Jehovah" in English. It's a relic of bad German scholarship carried over to other shores.

Denouncing all the misogynistic and homophobic "teachings" of Saul/Paul has been tried before apparently. My version of faith is nothing new in the scheme of things, but it was honestly found on my own, by study of the faith, not by reading other peoples ideas.

To preach my version of Christianity means "attacking" Paul's Church (The Holy Roman Catholic Church), by spelling out exactly all the ways it contravenes the gospel of Jesus. Others have tried this before and it has always ended badly, I don't wish to repeat that.

I'm happy with my personal belief and the small measure of faith I can maintain. Tilting against windmills seems a bit much right now...

I've encountered them on my porch. Like, two days ago. Again. And I send them packing, along with the other local religious peddlers.

Guess what... that I was a Witness? That tooting their horn about the Holocaust is a PR move? That my name is Walter? Wow what?

Fess up, Sally!

Hold on... evidently you have succumbed to the Watchtowers Societies little propaganda coup... yes Witnesses did end up in death camps, about 225 of them, a paltry number compared to Jews, gypsies and homosexuals. Of course, I guess 1 is too many, but my point is, the Witnesses love to use that little fact to make them look like the only "Christians" that were persecuted by the established German Christians.

It's a PR move, that's all. I know, I was a Witness for a long time.

We are not in disagreement. It is not about numbers. And as Saint Maximilian Kolbe will testify, I never said anything about the Witnesses being the "only" persecuted Christians under the Third Reich.

I may or may not be able to take up the theological cudgels with you (I think I am, but I'm arrogant that way). But I am without doubt the resident LGF expert on Nazism.

Which thou knowest well.

Oh, and the "established German Christians" played a negligible role in Hitler's Empire.

I am making those statement from the Witnesses point of view. They strive on being persecuted by "Christiandom" and ergo, Germans were part of "Christiandom" and... well, you get the gist.

If you are being persecuted, then you must be doing something right... as they like to think.

I love how the far right Christians always pass over the Gospels and go straight to the OT when they spout their wisdom.

And I love how, in a country where they can openly practice their faith and speak out against government policies they don't like without fear of the gulag, these religious nuts claim they're being persecuted.

Really? Where? Last time I checked, Christianity was the majority religious view held in this country. How the fuck is anyone in the majority persecuted? That makes no goddamned sense.

258 Eclectic Infidel  Wed, Jun 30, 2010 5:10:56pm

re: #11 marjoriemoon

Unfortunately, there are Christians who feel they haven't had their share of persecution and have some demented jealousy about it so they have to make stuff up. God wasn't this obsessed about gays. Really, He wasn't.

And yet, the two Christian towns in Israel, Nazareth and more importantly Bethlehem, have seen their populations almost drained of Christians because of radical Islam. Same goes for Christian Africans.

Hey Engle, have you fought the good fight for the Black and Arab Christians?

And Palestinian Christians for that matter. They're target practice for Hamas (the few who are left in Gaza). Hey, that would make for a great PR campaign, huh? Raise money for poor Christians stuck in Gaza.

I have never in my life seen Christians persecuted for anything. And it doesn't seem to be changing any time soon -- it's actually more like the other way around. If that's anything to go by, we probably have another 200 years before we can even start thinking about the "end times".
