Conan the Barbarian #1, October 1970

Arts • Views: 17,166

Tonight’s cover image from the Lizard Collection: the very first issue of Conan the Barbarian, created by the greats of the late Silver Age — writer Roy Thomas, artist Barry Smith, and inker/embellisher John Verpoorten. This comic book was published in October 1970, and was the inspiration for a special edition of the comic collector’s Bible, the Overstreet Price Guide. The Lizard Collection’s copy is in terrific shape, with white pages, bright inks, washboard abs, and only a few minor cover flaws.

What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!

OT: Christopher Hitchens has sadly been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Let’s hope that he gets the treatment he needs and will recover quickly.

If you go to the bar to have 1 or 2 and don’t get home until 1 or 2, you might have a drinking problem.:)

Missouri bans alcohol, nudity at strip clubs

If you were planning a trip to Missouri this summer, bad news. Well, first, you should really set your goals higher in life. And second, if you were planning on taking in a local gentlemen’s club, be warned, a new law says that women are no longer allowed to be nude and alcohol will no longer be served at Missouri-area strip clubs.

Dang. Way to stimulate the economy.

You know, I’ve never quite understood guys who need alcohol to go to a strip club. Here in NY they can be fully nude OR they can serve booze, but not both. I once went with a friend to the former type and he just couldn’t it. He made us go to another one down the line where he could drink. Ah well.

A new supermarket opened in Morristown, TN. It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the distant sound of thunder and the smell of fresh rain.

When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and you experience the scent of fresh cut hay.

In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks and brats.

In the liquor department, the fresh, clean, crisp smell of tapped Miller Lite.

When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread & cookies.

I don’t buy toilet paper there anymore.

Dang. Way to stimulate the economy.

122 Racer X  Wed, Jun 30, 2010 9:12:37pm

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch standard 4-pound dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with high flying birds, in order to test the strength of the windshields.

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer’s back-rest in two, and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow.

The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the US scientists for suggestions.

NASA responded with a one-line memo - “Defrost the Chicken.” (True Story)

‘nother true story

Back in the 60’s the Chinese were crowing how they had developed a drill bit with THE smallest diameter

They sent one to the US Corps of Engineers

The corp sent it back with a perfect hole drilled in the middle of the bits point!

Hey, waitaminute

I was gonna pull up the Mythbusters boys have tested and then retested the myth and found it to be “plausible,” i.e. under the right conditions the myth can be recreated. But the myth in its entirety is not correct, else it would be classified as “confirmed.”

Yeah, I’m seein’ that. It was in the right ballpark with one guess, and even had her name on the list of possible “guesses.” I’m figurin’ I probably confuzzled it a bit by answering “No” or “Yes” to a question when it was more a “probably.”

I have several! It’s hard to choose.

Here’s probably my favorites, in a couple categories, the first being “drummers that influenced my playing that I actually sit around trying to figure out how they do it on the kit” and the second being “drummers that blow my mind that I’m terrified of that are probably actually aliens”

category one:

Mark Zonder of Fates Warning
Jean Paul Gaster of Clutch
Jeff Burrows of The Tea Party
Brann Dailor of Mastodon
Mike Bordin of Fath No More
Sean Reinert of Cynic

category two:

Terry Bozzio
Danny Carey
Manu Katche
Dave Weckl
Gavin Harrison
Gene Hoglan
