‘Climategate’ Scientist Completely Exonerated: ‘No Substance’ To Allegations

Environment • Views: 3,721

Michael Mann, one of the climate scientists outrageously smeared in the year’s most bogus scandal (“Climategate” - ugh) and also known as one of the main researchers behind the “hockey stick” global warming graph, has now been completely cleared of “scientific misconduct,” in an exhaustive two-part investigation by Penn State.

Just out: Pennsylvania State University has completed the second half of a two-part investigation of Michael Mann’s role in the so-called “Climategate” affair. The 2-month inquiry has found that Mann is innocent of the remaining charge of scientific misconduct that had been raised by e-mails uncovered in November. The full report is here. Its conclusion:

… the Investigatory Committee determined that Dr. Michael E. Mann did not engage in, nor did he participate in, directly or indirectly, any actions that seriously deviated from accepted practices within the academic community … .

A previous investigation found him innocent of suppressing data, deleting e-mails, and misusing confidential information.

And still, nobody is in trouble for hacking the email account, that I have heard of. Apparently, identity theft isn't a problem at all to the right wing.

But what about those cherry picked statements from an anonymous source who broke in and stole data?

Nope, only if you figure out Palin's passwords because, well, she used stupid passwords and make her email public.

Hacking email accounts is identity theft. It's immoral and illegal. And it is somehow not at all part of the narrative to the right. The story is the bullshit allegation that the data was fraudulent. The data was not only legitimate, but the way in which the code was stolen is no big whoop to those attempting to smear the good name of these scientists.

Minchin has been a strong proponent of privatisation and wholesale labour market deregulation. He has defended the full privatisation of Telstra, and argued that the Commonwealth should sell its Telstra shares to buy a portfolio of other income-earning investments rather than spend the profits on national infrastructure.

Minchin claimed the tobacco industry was over-regulated.

A 2009 article in The Australian drew parallels between his stance on tobacco and his stance as a climate change skeptic.

"As Tony [Abbott] observed on one occasion, 'climate change is crap', or if you consider his mentor, Senator Minchin, the world is not warming, it's cooling and the climate change issue is part of a vast left-wing conspiracy to deindustrialise the world"

Celebrity honor killing?
Harry Potter actress' family charged over kill threats

The father and brother of an actress who starred in Harry Potter have been charged with threatening to kill her at her home in Manchester.

Afshan Azad, 22, was cast as Padma Patil, a classmate of the child wizard in the film series.

Abdul Azad, 54, and his son Ashraf, 28, are alleged to have threatened her at her Longsight home. The 28-year-old is also accused of assaulting his sister.

Both men appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The case was adjourned until July 12 for committal proceedings to Manchester Crown Court.

Miss Azad first appeared as her character - the identical twin sister of Parvati Patil - in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

She will also feature in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, the final film in the saga.

Gore making millions is capitalism at its best. His organizations are being used to promote alternative energy sources. The fastest way to get humans to adopt new ideas is to make the old ideas overly expensive. re: #82 allegro

As I asked, is there an AGW denier who isn't a wingnut?

ah, I think it's safe to say yes...probably millions

There is a difference between a denier and a sceptic. There is no way to make a denier change his/her mind, no matter how convincing to the average person the evidence. That is why we describe a denier as a moron. We know there are many who have been convinced by the deniers to dismiss AGW as an organized plot that would reconsider if the information they were supplied was more honest and accurate. To do this we have to make the misinformation look ridiculous while filling the resulting void with accurate information.

Unfortunately, science is hard and without a good foundation and some interest it is difficult to absorb. What we need is a personality that can sex up the message and make it accessible to the average non-scientist. I think this is what Gore was attempting to do but because of his political history was the wrong person for the job.

I think Bush is too low on the list too. But notice where Reagan is, he's way up there so it's not necessarily lefty bias. I think Bush's problem is that the lefties have always hated him and the right turned on him after the election. It's common to see Tea Party signs bashing Bush and Beck frequently mentions Bush as part of the Cloward-Piven conspiracy to intentionally destroy the country. Conservatives turned on Bush right after the election partially because Obama was continuing Bush policies like economic stimulus spending. Ah, who believes what these elitists sitting in their ivory towers say about anything. They do not have the bestest weapon in the world - common sense. Common sense is always right.

The long-running Siena College poll has always biased their selection of "experts" toward communards and retro-reds. Other presidential polls, though equally worthless, tend to yield results more congruent with voter perception. It's a little odd to imagine asking randomly selected voters for their opinions on Franklin Pierce and Millard Fillmore though. Poor Frank usually vies with Warren Harding for last place in these polls, with Fillmore as the favored last runner-up.
I have seen just one scholarly defense of Harding in my life, btw. It was written by a journalism professor who turned out to be Harding's great-nephew.

That is a contradiction in terms. It is much simpler to hurt the Arabs just by burning or converting coal. Why do you think it follows that only clean coal can be used? Oil is cleaner than coal.

At that point they can get on board with alternative energy without damage to their internal narrative.

I don't think the deniers have anything against alternative energy (the clean kind), they just don't want to pay more for it because of what they consider junk science.

But not in the Military.. Mare Island went code Delta and was a pain in the ass to get to work on time...You got the Marines, Dogs, MP's and the dude's with the mirrors on a stick looking under your car..The Marines on the Island went to high alert...I will never forget those days...We would be walking to lunch and a platoon of Marines would run by...We DOD Civilians felt very safe on base..

I'm DVRing the series.

I usually hate reenactment shows but this is well directed and acted. I think what really puts it over the top is they film on location. So if they're doing a story on Turkey you can tell it's filmed in Turkey instead of some cheap soundstage in California.

re: #227 HoosierHoops

Some historians believe that Warren G. Harding literally died from the rampant cronyism for which his administration is infamous. Harding fell ill during a train trip on the west coast and died at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. His physician, Charles E. Sawyer, was a quack and one of Harding's old friends from Ohio.

Sawyer’s reliance on dated medical practices resulted in the misdiagnosis of the President’s coronary condition that led to the President’s death in San Francisco in 1923. Joel Boone, M.D., the Vice Admiral in the United States Naval Medical Corps, had diagnosed the condition while Harding was on tour in Alaska. Sawyer deferred to the attending physician; however, Harding insisted on finishing the trip. It has even been specuated that Sawyer's use of harsh purgatives was the cause of Harding's fatal heart attack. At Sawyer’s recommendation, Mrs. Harding did not have an autopsy performed.

Incidentally, few Americans know that President Harding did have a very good record on civil rights, probably the best between Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt.

Good evening Reine! Hope you are well..
So I go to lunch today and come out out my my car broke down..Dang computer was going crazy on the display..Like the beta version of Vista...I couldn't even turn the steering wheel...I'm going What?
I had to laugh...Whatever..I call Paulie to pick me up and called the shop to pick the car up..We looked under the hood and all the belts were off..Weird..
Paulie starts to try to figure out how to get the belts back on...Give it up bro..It's a Beemer we are fucked...In fact I would consider Hooking up with a BMW mechanic's daughter...Just for the rate..
Anyhoo my friend.. They called and gave me the bill.. Some tension adjuster thingy dingy that cost a fortune..The good news is the belts are just fine..
a 180 dollars an hour to install a high tech German Engineered part.
LOL
Then the tow truck driver couldn't find the car..Now this is funny..My Garage sends for a tow truck from Indy to my town.. Guy had no clue where the Chinese joint was in the strip mall.. He kept calling my Cell..
What is the address? You know..It's the only strip mall in a tiny town..I don't know the Street..
Call back What is it by? It's in our only strip mall across the street from BW3,,Dress Barn..For gawds sakes where the Kohl's dept store is...
It's getting funny cause we are both laughing by this time...
I see Kohls!
Oh thank Gawd.. Now drive South...ok
Call Back
Sir there are several cars matching you here...
I gave you my plate number!
What was that number sir?
So..I gave this guy my plate number of the only Red Beemer in the Parking lot in front of a Chinese joint...Cause..He couldn't find it. in a town of a few thousand.LOL I think he was f*cking with me
Sending a tow truck from Indy to here makes a 911 call look cheap..
Well next weekend I'll be spending some posting here in the evening Oklahoma...My first trip to scope out the State

The Linux version seems more stable than the windows version of Chrome, for some reason. I have some glitches in windows, but none in Ubuntu. I don't think they are caused by the OS, though, because Firefox works fine in both.

Still no linky. I tried searching but came up dry.

No pertinent results I could find for "Clinton wishing for crisis," "Clinton wishes for crisis" or "Clinton wished for crisis." Nothing at Snopes, either.

There was a Malkin discharge from a couple weeks ago accusing Obama of wanting his own 9/11.

A commenter to that post basically said the same thing Tradewind said, so the meme is definitely out there.

Ignorance is not the issue. The issue is the politicization of AGW regardless of politics. It is a tool to forward a political agenda, surely you must agree with that.

everything is a potential tool for a political agenda...the agenda is to win elections.

That is a non-sequitur to the question of whether AGW is very established science.

Like i said. See, i actually agree with you here.

But you're not listening to me. What does a poor solution have to do with your stubbornness to accept the problem?

I'll argue against wrecking our economy until i'm blue in the face...it's not an effective solution. But that is a different question. What we ought to do about the problem is only a discussion i'm interested in having with people who take the time to figure out that there is a problem.

There's a ton of info here at LGF - it helped me make up my mind - i suggest you avail yourself of the same links, and stop making bad solutions an excuse for your thoughts about the problem.

It's hard enough to get those who accept the science to come up with policies to address the problem.

Let us say for a second that you are right.

Having conceded that point, do you really think that an effective opposition is to pretend that the science is invalid, rather than proposing a more effective agenda given the existence of solid science? Come on.

So if i create a platform to advance curly, brown-haired caucasian rights based on the fact that the sky is blue, your tactic would be to say that the sky is green rather than argue that the color of the sky does not grant me superior racial status?

Science is never settled.

TEACH THE CONTROVERSY!!

Seriously, this is the same tack taken by creationists, and it was picked up by the AGW-deniers from them.

Do you really think climatologists don't know how science works?

Do you really think those climatologists have decided that there is no more work for them to do because they have answered every question?

You are grossly overplaying the paradigm shift card.

Whatever policies the nations of the world undertake to address climate change, one thing is certain - it will cost. Cost lots. No one (who is serious about it) is arguing otherwise. Even if we forgo any mitigation efforts, the adaptation costs to future climate change effects will be large, as without a doubt agriculture will be affected negatively in many parts of the world.

Without taking up any more time to write up a list of negative consequences, let me get to the punch-line: deciding to not do anything proactively about AGW is a decision that is fraught with problems, as adaptation alone will be a major turning point in human history.

How can you enlighten people who will deny that the dominant species on the surface of the planet can affect the climate? How can you argue intelligently with people who will deny that trillions of tons of a gaseous insulator being released into the atmosphere might have a net warming effect? How do you reason with those who will ignore a mountain of evidence because there may be a minor issue with the data?

If you can find a way to convince them of the obvious, please, let us all know. In the meantime, i'll continue to call those who deny the obvious morons.

You know, morons.

Morons, eh? Well, let's have a look at your bunk. To repeat what I've already quoted above:

How can you argue intelligently with people who will deny that trillions of tons of a gaseous insulator being released into the atmosphere might have a net warming effect?

Now, I know that "trillions of tons" seems like a lot, but when you compare this to the total mass of the atmosphere, which is on the order of several quadrillions of tons then not so much. You are making a mistake typical of lay persons when referring to large numbers but simultaneously ignoring scale. Morons indeed.

re: #73 b_sharp

Gore making millions is capitalism at its best. His organizations are being used to promote alternative energy sources. The fastest way to get humans to adopt new ideas is to make the old ideas overly expensive. Since AGW is somewhat in the future, we need to repackage the message to one of energy independence which can be made to look more immediate.

If Gore were making his money on the up and up, competing not for the favor of the government, but for the favor of the consumer, that would be great. But when his corporations get the nod for government grants, there is reason to think it's because of his position in the Party, not the merit of the technology.

How, seriously, is a Finnish company that's going to make electric luxury autos worthy of half-billion dollars in USA public funds? The market seems to think that if anybody can bring this off it'll be Tesla motors. And that's no sure thing.

Even before this, Gore was raking it in, and his operations have never amounted to anything in a purely commercial sense. Grant money flows, and his mansion gets bigger, and that's about the end of the tangible consequences.

Great things are happening in green tech, and I wish all the movers and shakers, the folk who develop the technology, and their investors, all the best. But it doesn't help us get to a green future when money is thrown at enterprises whose main merit is the pull of the guy backing them.

If you think that parts per million is no big deal, would you object to ingesting a single microgram of pollonium? Think before you answer, because your answer will kill you if it's wrong.

The scale of additional human-supplied CO2 in the atmosphere is sufficient to move the relative abundance of CO2 up by 50%, 70%, (already), and eventually to more than double it. This is the gas that is the key reason why the surface of the earth is a lot warmer, on average, than the surface of the moon.

To imagine that a little bit of something cannot make a big difference is to discard the lessons of common sense. Nobody misses the fact that a little bit of silvering makes sunglasses a lot darker, that a little bit of poison can kill, and that a little bit of CO2 makes the atmosphere a much better blanket for the earth.

Nobody but ----well----you.

re: #379 lostlakehiker

I didn't miss anything. The numbers you provide are reasonable. But Fozzie was calling folks morons while giving out pointless "huge" numbers as if the size of the number by itself is interesting. Trillions of tons!!! Trillions of tons seems large. ppm seems small. The relative scale and effects matter, and throwing seemingly large numbers around to sound smart is really dumb.

re: #351 Eric

Ace, I am uncertain anything needs to be done. You can scream and say the world is ending, it is not. The world will be here long after we are gone, just as it was long before we became homo sapiens sapiens, Even if i were to concede the globe was warming, draconian cuts in economic output to lower the mean temp 1 degree centigrade do not look like good solutions to me.

In short, I'll believe AGW is a crisis when the people who tell me it's a crisis (Gore et al.) start acting like its a crisis.

When the German army was rolling through the Ardennes in 1940, the French general staff didn't act like it was a crisis. It's entirely possible that there are people hitching a ride to a real crisis just for the sake of the white gloves and the leisurely lunches with wine. It's possible that Gore is one of them.

Bruce Bueno di Mosquito (spelling may be off a tad) has a book, the Predictioneer's Game, in which he explains, as an aside (he's not an AGW player, just watching from the sidelines) that he doesn't think anything will actually be done about the problem through politics. He's seen the political obstacles and they strike him as insurmountable. If he's right, and he's been right more than once when everybody else was wrong, that leaves us to find things to do that do not involve a sustained, serious hit to the economy.

What we need is a way to have our energy and our environment too. That means some combination of wind, solar, nuclear, passive solar [building things so they're efficient from the start], improved technology for lighting, electric cars, and all sorts of individually small-scale steps that collectively might add up. [Recycling, bio-fuels built not from burning food but from burning or metabolizing what we now deem waste, etc]. We need enhanced R&D into solar photovoltaic, because without at least one more doubling of its economic efficiency, we can't compete with coal. We need experience, through pilot plants, in building solar thermal power stations. We need a better electric transmission grid. High voltage DC, perhaps.

We need a better regulatory environment. Nuclear power plants built to a standard design should just automatically count as safe. No more of this NIMBY crap. Same with wind power off Nantuckett, etc. Same with the Nevada waste vault.

All this is doable. Much of it is being worked on right now. It won't wreck our economy. It won't even seriously dent it. Meanwhile, how's our oil and coal fired economy working? Is this an answer not just for today, but for tomorrow and for decades to come? For longer? You, or your children, will see those tomorrows. Even on the human scale of time, those days are not so distant as to be of no interest. We're running out of safe places to get oil from. If we get it from our own deep waters, well, just watch the evening news. If we get it from Saudi Arabia, what about the geopolitical price? What about the price price?

You have to compare green vs. conventional strategies going forward. The prudent thing to do, even if you rate AGW as less likely to be a big problem than it really is, is to cover our risks and do things we maybe should do anyhow.

Oh, and it is going to be a big problem. Heat waves are not good for crops, and the warming in the pipeline is sufficient to cause many a bad harvest.
