Creationism at the Huffington Post

Science • Views: 4,653

The Huffington Post has always been friendly toward “new age” quack medicine, but I have to admit I was a little surprised to see them actually publishing the work of Discovery Institute shill David Klinghoffer: David Klinghoffer: The Dark Side of Darwinism.

If you’ve ever read an article by this clown, you already know the drill; Charles Darwin was a “sinister” racist, his ideas inspired eugenics and the Third Reich, blah blah, yadda yadda.

Klinghoffer’s rancid, dishonest piece is filed under “Religion and Science,” but it should have been filed in the trash. What a disgrace.

Here’s an LGF search for our articles on Klinghoffer’s long history of shilling for creationism.

Isn’t blaming Nazi Eugenics on Darwin a bit like blaming the Spanish Inquisition or the Crusades on Jesus?

4 b_sharp  Sat, Jul 3, 2010 11:08:00am

They can’t dispel the science so they try to make the belief in ‘Darwinism’ an evil in itself. Dishonest bull shit.

I should probably stop checking the HuffingtonPost, because the site constantly posts articles this dumb, but I like the layout. The volume of quack articles it so heavy that rational blogs like sciencebasedmedicine can’t keep up.

The Discovery Institute has learned after long experience: When it’s obvious that you don’t have any science on your side, send in Klinghoffer.

Evisceration is pretty brutal.

Well… that’s the last article I ever read on Huffingtons… there’s no place left to go… looks like if crazy sells, then crazy it is for these so called “news” sites… looks like HP is just another sellout.

11 Nemesis6  Sat, Jul 3, 2010 11:15:52am

In their limited defense(I don’t see any for publishing Creationist drivel), the commenters are ripping the article to shreds.

12 Nimed  Sat, Jul 3, 2010 11:18:12am

The article’s last paragraph:

A picture of how the world works carries implications about how the world should work, must work. If morality is stitched into the fabric of reality rather than being merely a useful fiction, then here is no observation about reality that has no moral consequences. That much the victims of moral Darwinism, over the past century and a half, have found out to their sorrow.

Is one of the most perfect examples of the naturalistic fallacy I’ve seen in a text not meant to illustrate it.

Hitler sounds like a Creationist to me:

The result of all racial crossing is therefore in brief always the following:

(a) Lowering of the level of the higher race;

(b) Physical and intellectual regression and hence the beginning of a slowly but surely progressing sickness.

To bring about such a development is, then, nothing else but to sin against the will of the eternal creator. And as a sin this act is rewarded.

-Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf)

And

That this is possible may not be denied in a world where hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people voluntarily submit to celibacy, obligated and bound by nothing except the injunction of the Church.

Should the same renunciation not be possible if this injunction is replaced by the admonition finally to put an end to the constant and continuous original sin of racial poisoning, and to give the Almighty Creator beings such as He Himself created? -Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf)

Hitler sure sounds like a creationists to me.

Good Morning From SoCal. I have a bit of a conundrum. Somebody (maybe 2 people) bought two Reality Bites cookbooks last night. At midnight a post went up on my blog that the next two cookbooks were eligible for an 8x10 photo from my or D_L’s pages. That makes the books sold overnight eligible.

That person or persons (if interested) should sent RDT their LULU thank you note with the personal address info removed. Then let RDT or myself know which prints you would like. A pleasant surprise for you I hope.

However-I had thought the sales would happen after this announcement here this morning. After all the newly registered deserve a shot at the same offer. So I’m making sure the offer stands this weekend and the eligible overnight sales get their offer too.

So here is what I’ll do. Two more last prints for the next 2 cookbooks sold. In the spirit of Independence Day, anytime over the holiday weekend. Independence day for the nation and independent thinks here. Heck even the recipes have an independent flavor.

Earlier in that video, one of the students says that God created man, and then put the animals and plants on the earth so “we could survive”.

It’s bad enough when creationists don’t know any science, but when they don’t know even the rudiments of the Genesis account of creation, that’s self-parody.

We don’t know where life started, but it wasn’t in the middle east. There wasn’t any such thing or place when life started. The continents themselves are wave tossed bits of foam, not permanent objects, on the time scale of life on earth.

As to our own species, we are quite recent. We are also evolving fairly rapidly. It almost never happens that a new species arises suddenly, with a single mutation. Mostly, you just have populations that become reproductively separated and that find themselves in different environments, and the selective pressures of their environments carry them down different paths from there.

For a time, they remain the same species—-they are willing and able to breed with each other, should opportunity arise. But little by little, the differences grow and the willingness and/or ability fades away.

The earliest time that we find fossils of anatomically and behaviorally modern humans is a mere 50 to 100 thousand years ago. Islands come and go on that time span, as the seas rise and fall. But the continents were then where they are now, give or take a few feet.

Our species originated in Africa. We are all Africans*, if we trace our ancestry back far enough.

*(98% African, at any rate. Most of us, apart from those of pure African heritage, have some small admixture of Neanderthal background. Life, as a famous movie once noted, finds a way.)

Fairly recently there was an article in Scientific American on the latest findings regardin vitamin D (which is really a complex) and its influence on calcium absorption and other processes that just now are becoming understood. UV radiation required to make vit. D. Melanin in the skin protects against UV radiation. Not enough UV absorbed >> not enough vit. D >> problems (including rickets). That would be one of the reasons why peoples living in higher lattitudes lost their melanin (!?).

Plausible explanation to me. Remedy: along with their bible, people ought to read SciAm!!! But again who needs a balancing view and besides as someone said ‘science is hard’.

From post 878 on the thread a few places back

Treviño, who blogs as “Tacitus,” is a former Bush speechwriter and vice president of public policy at Pacific Research Institute, a free market think tank best known for its advocacy of privatizing public education. (For “privatizing public education” read “pushing charter schools.” For “pushing charter schools” read “making sure African-American kids never go to college.”)

Not to defend Trevino on the matter of evolution, but charter schools and Catholic schools both have pretty strong records when it comes to African-American kids. It’s not as if the public schools are doing a top-notch job, after all.

Houston Chronicle vouches for legitimacy of Kipp scores…
(A discussion of the results achieved by Kipp academies.)

And then there’s this about Catholic schools:
emory.edu report

There are some significant messages for public schools in this book that transcend the triteness of uniform-wearing. As far as the pedagogy in Catholic schools, there is overwhelming evidence that it was rigorous, traditional and unremarkable. Catholic teachers were ordinary by today’s standards, yet the degree of engagement and achievement by their students was-and continues to be-very high. It appeared that the Catholic school teachers were either unaware or unimpressed with research that correlated student achievement with ethnicity and family income.

A prevailing theme throughout the book is that Catholic teachers had high expectations for their students. Guided by their sense of mission to teach, save souls or escape the fires of hell, Catholic teachers were unrelenting in their expectation that African American students achieve. All students were expected to master all subjects and no course or assignment was considered too difficult, esoteric or irrelevant.

[big snip]

We were told that we could and we would excel academically.

This curriculum must be taught by individuals who are mission oriented and who believe that African Americans must-not simply can-learn and achieve in schools.

How can support for these efforts be spun as an attempt to make sure no African-Americans go to college? Don’t these schools generate more than their share of graduates?

This is why we have “fair maiden” and “tall, dark, and handsome”. These cliches tie in to a genetic reality: in any given climate, there is an ideal skin tone, striking the perfect balance between dark, for protection from the sun, and light, for calcium.

But at that perfect tone, there is a split. Women need more calcium because they nurse the babies. So the ideal woman is lighter than the ideal man, and vice versa.

Darwin was a scientist and foremost, an observer. His writing on social evolution were not a fictional creation but instead based on his analysis of his observations and studies of humans. Social evolution, eugenics, and “survival of the fittest” all existed prior to Darwin’s theories and were practiced by humans from a cognitive level to organized political movements.

Yeah, I’m using Firefox v3.6.4. It’s got a new feature that isolates the Flash, Shockwave and Silverlight plugins from the browser. This prevents FF from crashing if a plugin does. The problem? This feature consumes 35% of my processor every time one of the aforementioned plugins is used. Annoying, to say the least.

House Democrats ‘Deem’ Faux $1.1 Trillion Budget ‘as Passed’

Last night, as part of a procedural vote on the emergency war supplemental bill, House Democrats attached a document that “deemed as passed” a non-existent $1.12 trillion budget. The execution of the “deeming” document allows Democrats to start spending money for Fiscal Year 2011 without the pesky constraints of a budget
Never before — since the creation of the Congressional budget process — has the House failed to pass a budget, failed to propose a budget then deemed the non-existent budget as passed as a means to avoid a direct, recorded vote on a budget, but still allow Congress to spend taxpayer money.

OT: Remains of 7 servicemen are recovered from WWII crash in Burma; Arlington burial planned

TYRONE, Pa. - U.S. military authorities have identified the remains of seven servicemen missing in action since their cargo plane went down in Burma during World War II.

The men were aboard a C-47A Skytrain that left India on May 23, 1944, to resupply Allied forces near Myitkyina, Burma, but never returned.

In 2002, a missionary found a data plate from a crash site about 31 miles northwest of Myitkyina. A military team excavated the site.

Aboard the plane were Air Force Tech. Sgt. Clarence Frantz of Tyrone, Pa.; Capt. Joseph M. Olbinski of Chicago; 1st Lt. Joseph J. Auld of Floral Park, N.Y.; 1st Lt. Robert M. Anderson of Millen, Ga.; Pfc. Richard M. Dawson of Haynesville, Va.; Pvt. Robert L. Crane of Sacramento, Calif.; and Pvt. Fred G. Fagan of Piedmont, Ala.

They will be buried with full military honors July 15 at Arlington National Cemetery.

107 RadicalModerate  Sat, Jul 3, 2010 2:08:25pm

For what it’s worth, Huffington Post had the foresight to put the creationist’s story in their “Religion” section - where it actually belongs.

Looking through some of the other stories and I found this one, which quite honestly should be required reading for everyone with an evangelical bent.

Thank God for Atheists

“I told the people in my church, ‘I don’t like evangelizing, and I know you hate it, so I’ve decided that I’m formally resigning from witnessing. You’re all free to do so the same,’ ” Henderson recalls. “I said, ‘I love Jesus, you love Jesus, and we all want to connect people with Jesus. But we’re gonna have to figure out new ways to do it.’ ”
In the 15 years since, Henderson has blazed a new path as an innovator, author, church-evaluator, self-professed subversive, and leader in the creation of new ways to be publicly and persuasively Christian in the 21st century. Maybe the most subversive — and sensible — surprise of all is the population to which this well-caffeinated Seattle man has turned for partners, friends and teachers: atheists.
What could a Christian possibly learn from atheists? A lot, it turns out. As more and more Jesus followers like Henderson are discovering, taking a look at yourself and your religion through the eyes of the unconvinced can be a revelatory experience.
[…]
Rather than arguing with an atheist, Henderson bought one. In 2006, he heard about an atheist offering his soul to the highest bidder on eBay, laid down $504 and, lo and behold, claimed the prize. Henderson didn’t try to convert that atheist, a Chicago graduate student named Hemant Mehta. Instead, he asked him to evaluate churches and report on his findings.
From that sprang a series of church visits and reports, books by both Henderson and Mehta, and Henderson’s ChurchRater.com website, where people read and post reviews of churches they’ve attended. Henderson has also launched an offshoot church consulting business, again using non-Christians as partners in his work to help churches evaluate themselves through the eyes of outsiders.

Of course those plants will hire American workers who will then take the money they make and spend it in their communities creating more jobs plus the plants will need material mostly made in the US so American manufactures will be able to not lay off workers or even hire new workers.

re: #118 webevintage

The 2010 elections, however, are likely to return a much-reduced Democratic Senate majority. As the situation stands, Democrats couldn’t pass unemployment-insurance legislation with 59 votes, because they couldn’t quite get to 60. If they have only 52 members in their caucus, they really have no chance. That’s why setting down reconciliation instructions now was so important: It was their best chance to actually govern next year.

That one has some explanation in it:

The budget enforcement resolution is an alternative to actually passing a budget. It does the main work of the budget, which is telling the appropriators how much money they have to spend, but it includes few details beyond that. The absence of those specifics means House Democrats aren’t voting for a budget with a trillion-plus-dollar deficit, which is a vote they don’t want to take, and it spares the House leadership the trouble of navigating the normal budget-related squabbles. But no budget means no budget reconciliation instructions, and no budget reconciliation instructions mean no passing jobs legislation with 51 votes in the Senate.

And if ANYONE wants to tell me the stimulus money helped create jobs, I call bullshit. I’ve been saying it for months, probably a year, that any money going to states would get eaten up by administrative costs, upper management and the good old boys contractors that have been in the pocket of state and local governments for years… if that stimulus money was really helping, was really being put to good use, then you couldn’t ever write a paragraph like this (from the NYT article)…

The federal dollars are nearly spent. Last month, local governments nationwide shed more than 20,000 jobs. Should the largest struggling states — like California, New York or Illinois — lay off tens of thousands more in coming months, or default on payments, the reverberations could badly damage a weakened economy and push housing prices down still further.

Cutting taxes and regulation does not generate revenue. Bush tried to have his Treasury Department put a shine on that turd and they just couldn’t. Deferring maintenance won’t put more people to work, it just jeopardizes their commute to it.

Materials and labor prices are down now. The government can capitalize on that to get needed repairs completed and facilitating a more rapid recovery at the same time.

For those who still think Obama’s policy toward Israel isn’t much different than other Presidents, perhaps they’d like to explain this?

Nudge on Arms Further Divides U.S. and Israel

WASHINGTON — It was only one paragraph buried deep in the most plain-vanilla kind of diplomatic document, 40 pages of dry language committing 189 nations to a world free of nuclear weapons. But it has become the latest source of friction between Israel and the United States in a relationship that has lurched from crisis to crisis over the last few months.

At a meeting to review the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty in May, the United States yielded to demands by Arab nations that the final document urge Israel to sign the treaty — a way of spotlighting its historically undeclared nuclear weapons.

Israel believed it had assurances from the Obama administration that it would reject efforts to include such a reference, an Israeli official said, and it saw this as another sign of unreliability by its most important ally. In a recent visit to Washington, Israel’s defense minister, Ehud Barak, raised the issue in meetings with senior American officials. ..

[Link: www.nytimes.com…]

This is the second “assurance” that this White house has broken with Israel. The broke the agreement over the Gaza withdrawal letter signed by Bush and now this.

I see Obama is going to waste 2 billion taxpayer dollars for solar plants not owned by Americans.
/

Just getting a jump on the GOP talking points.
Of course those plants will hire American workers who will then take the money they make and spend it in their communities creating more jobs plus the plants will need material mostly made in the US so American manufactures will be able to not lay off workers or even hire new workers.

The question of where the solar plants was made is secondary. Ideally, we would have “solar-plant seeds.” We would stick them in the ground, and without any further work on our part, they’d grow and blossom into solar plants, then put out tendrils of copper and connect themselves to the grid.

That the things we’re actually getting require further work and further inputs is an unfortunate necessity, not a bonus. Whatever materials are used in their construction are materials that could have been used to some other purpose.

Just so we get the energy without having to burn any more coal.

re: #136 Dark_Falcon

I didn’t say such measures would generate revenue, I said they would create jobs.

That’s doubtful as well:

The theory of tax cuts as economic stimulus has been put to the test - and failed - twice in the past six years alone. As the prolonged recession leads more people to once again consider these same old tried-and-failed policies, it is important to revisit recent history.

Less than half the personal tax cuts—especially the types of high-end tax cuts favored by conservatives—are likely to be spent in the first two years. Most of it will be used to pay down debt, build savings, or buy imports - all uses of money that do not boost the U.S. economy.

Consider the $100 billion in personal tax rebates that were issued as part of a broader economic stimulus effort in 2008. Only about one-third of the total amount was spent. A University of Michigan study in December 2008 concluded that these rebates provided “little ‘bang for the buck’ as economic stimulus.”

Our Fourth of July parade was on the third this year. It was filled with all kinds of law enforcement, fire trucks, tractors, horses, veterans, politicians, and pickup truck loads of the summer league softball teams. As always, the parade moved in fits and starts, and some of the softball teams were paused in front of my store for about 15 minutes. It was plenty of time for the various pickup loads to get into a water fight. The boys’ teams were prepared with Super Soakers, and what looked like planned tactics. The girls had to improvise with bottles of COLD water from their ice chests, and deviousness. Spectators enjoyed the overspray.

I think they’re saving the fireworks for tomorrow.

What we want is old jobs, creating new wealth. The kind of thing they do better everywhere else.

I don’t buy that they always do it cheaper. They are just better capitalists, with slightly longer horizons. Any fool can be cheaper when they eliminate the competition. Cheaper than who?

Ever bought a TV made in the USA? Ever bought a coffee cup not made in Chine (and shipped a gazillion miles to get to Wallmart to be sold for $0.50)? Ever bought a wind turbine not made in little old Denmark?

We will always need roads, and we will need to maintain them forever.

bah…I can take it…except I really can’t, I’ve gone through this for two years and I’m outa juice, no matter how tough I try to be, I know deep down I’m fucked and will lose my leg…worse stuff can happen tho, alot worse

That would be a bitch of a call to make, I’m not sure I could make it. I know the following won’t help any, but it’s about the only thing I can think to say. If you do lose it and are able to afford a decent prosthetic, much of your mobility can be retained.

Virtual support over the Internet is pretty thin at best but, unless I misunderstand the atmosphere here, most here are willing to help the best we can, even if that just means listening to you.

Spirit Intact, a Soldier Reclaims His Life

BRENDAN Marrocco and his brother, Michael, were constructing a summer bucket list, to get them out and about, trying new things. A Washington Nationals game versus their beloved Yankees — sure, since they were stuck here rather than home on Staten Island. Perhaps a ride on the Metro, with its reliable elevators. Pizza: definitely.

How about going to an amusement park? Michael suggested optimistically.

“Would that really be safe?” asked Brendan, a smirk crossing his lips.

The beach? “I don’t do beach anymore,” Brendan replied. Then what about the National Zoo, the one with the pandas? “They got pandas?” Brendan said, razzing his brother again. “Why didn’t you mention that?”

Continues.

I’ll be going back up in a few months if I can…as much as I gab about my little home town, it’s difficult to visit for various reasons…anyway my entire life revolves around my bad leg…time to ditch it I think, but I’m too scared to make the call, I’m getting closer tho

I’d do some additional research. Treatments keep advancing and there may be something for you.

You know what pisses me off about HuffPo even more than this article?

The fact that it is nearly impossible to post anything even slightly critical of the article at hand without the filters removing it. I don’t know how the other posters managed to get their responses posted, but I can’t seem to get even a relatively tame response to not get censored.

Yah, the macho male, independent soul bit has been drilled into us pretty convincingly over the years and giving up that self image can be quite the kick in the balls. It’s really good you and the ex get along well enough she’s willing to help, most ex-relationships can’t say that. Was it the Cro-Magnons kidnapping and raping the hulking low-browed hairy Neanderthal women, ya think, or the other way around? And why am I suddenly reminded of Peter Boyle and Madeline Khan in Young Frankenstein?

Gosh, that’s a toughie. Orangutans have a well documented propensity to forcible penetration of human females. Human males have been known to busy themselves with donkeys, sheep, etc. etc. and it seems beyond belief that they would have passed on Neanderthal females, given the opportunity.

If Neanderthal males were anything like human or orang males, they too would have had, shall we say, catholic taste in females. And who can say whether it would have gone beyond the brute physical stage? Offspring are more likely to survive if cared for by a pair-bonded couple, and only offspring that live to puberty count in this game. Humans are well known to develop deep Platonic attachments to individuals not of our own species, after all, while true love easily spans the widest racial gaps now found in our species.

There must have been a lot of that, with our two related species living alongside each other for thousands of years, and viable offspring in at least a few cases. And some of those, evidently, mated with other humans.

We probably also hunted and ate each other, as we have done within our own species at least until very recently. This didn’t end with the Aztecs, and it didn’t end with the Khmer Rouge, and unfortunately we probably haven’t seen the last of it.

re: #155 goddamnedfrank

Not much to quote here, but the effect of tax cuts depends on what kind of tax cut we’re talking about. People are remarkably rational with money, even if we’re not perfect at it. A windfall is not the occasion for a higher permanent level of spending. It’s a windfall. You use it to pay down debt, maybe treat yourself a little, and you sock some of it away.

A raise is different. With a raise, you can think in terms of a bigger house, better colleges for the kids, more kids? You can move to a higher permanent level of spending. You’ll still probably sock a fraction of it away. If incomes can go up, they can go down, right?

A tax ‘rebate’ check is a windfall. A tax cut that is driven by relatively permanent political forces, forces sufficient to keep it in force for a decade or two, is another matter. Long term tax cuts paid off big time, both Kennedy’s and Reagan’s.

Turn it around. Permanent confiscatory levels of taxation drag an economy down. Witness the demise of the simple peasant oxcart in Turkey after the Muslim conquest. There was no longer any point in attempting to own this highly portable, very expensive, very useful “means of production”. It would not be yours for long after you bought it, and the things were like modern autos, beyond the skill of the normal household to make for home use.

Entrepreneurial spirits can only exist when the taxation climate leaves the better part of the earnings in possession of those who earn it. Cutting taxes from 70% to 50% to 30% will probably result, over the long term, in a stronger economy and more revenues for the government. Cutting them from there to 20% or 10% might perhaps build the economy a bit more, but the government’s revenue would be reduced. At some point, the govt becomes too weak to perform its core missions and then the essential prerequisite for any type of commerce, a government that enforces contracts and overawes highwaymen and brigands, fails.

There was a show on TV the other night about this charity that arranges adventure hikes for Afghanistan/Iraq war veterans who have lost a leg (or both). Quite a few of them have summited places such as Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, or McKinley. Now these are young men who started out at the peak of physical fitness, but still, the prostheses these days are clearly way, way better than those of ten or twenty years ago.

We had our parade today also. The usual assortment of drum core, hoola-hooping hussies, politicians, neighboring churches, bands on flat beds, The [Link: WWW…] not the wrestlers), LGBT groups, Lawn Chair Brigade and even a solo float of a burned Butter Jesus. Sweet Butter Jesus, resurrected on the 4th of July.

We died our hair: six year old went with Shocking Pink, 12 year old Raven Black, and my short shock of white and silver went Electric Midnight Blue. With the white Sean Connery stubble, it looks pretty great.

Freaks galore.

That and the YMCA lifeguard with the nipple hardware brings hope to this heart.

Where in Ohio? I’m not that far from the remains of “Butter Jesus” myself (I called him “Muffed Punt Jesus” for how wide his arms were spread).

I’d dye my hair, but my hair died over 25 years ago.

Great feature, isn’t it?

Look for tags “photography” or “photos” etc.

And because the pages is such a great feature, it might be well worth it to help support LGF this weekend with a donation, a subscription or a cookbook purchase!

And RWC has extended his photo offer - first two purchasers of a cookbook this weekend get a free copy of the photo of their choice from RWC or Dragon Lady’s photo collection, right here on LGF in the Pages!

Some of my favorite animals of all time are parrots.

My sister has a blue and gold macaw that is possibly the sweetest creature that I have ever met. She also has an amazon that will bite everybody besides her, hard.

Parrots have a wider range of possible personalities than dogs and cats, I think. They can be totally freaking evil, total teddy bears, and everything in between.

ISLIP TERRACE, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a man lighting fireworks has blown off his arm at a party on New York’s Long Island.

Suffolk County police say the 36-year-old man’s friends and relatives retrieved his severed left arm and packed it into a cooler after the blast Saturday. Police say doctors at a hospital are trying to reattach the limb.

Police believe the man leaned over a mortar to ignite it outside a home in Islip (EYE’-slip) Terrace around 5:45 p.m. He apparently didn’t or couldn’t get out of the way before the explosive went off.

A mortar. What fun.

So here is what I’ll do. Two more last prints for the next 2 cookbooks sold. In the spirit of Independence Day, anytime over the holiday weekend. Independence day for the nation and independent thinks here. Heck even the recipes have an independent flavor.

What a thoughtful offer.

re: #294 albusteve

will I still get a parrot?…
you’re certainly right tho
thanks

Speaking of parrots, there’s a story there about deep Platonic attachments across species. It can go both ways. Alex and Me, by Irene Pfefferberg, recounts the story of a scientist and her primary research subject, an African Grey’s parrot [Alex] who learned a lot of more-than-tricks.

Sample: How many green squares, Alex? (Shown a tray with 3 green circles, 4 red triangles, two green triangles, 2 green squares, 1 red square, 2 blue stars, a blue square, etc.)

Answer. 4

No, Alex.

Answer: 5.

No, Alex. You’ll just have to go in your cage. [“Time Out” ensues]

From within the cage: “I’m sorry. Two.”

Absolute tear-jerker of an ending.

Taking a parrot as a pet is a real responsibility. As much so as with a dog. You have a social animal with a rudimentary knowledge of right and wrong, a capacity for loyalty and attachment, and an astonishing ability to think, considering the tiny brain it has to work with.

I know. That’s why so many fireworks stores are in Northwest Indiana, because only that way can people from Chicago evade Illinois’s strict anti-fireworks laws. Yet, despite those laws, there will be many private fireworks shoots this weekend. One such firework went off as a I write this.

Good news. Seven attacks. Seven.

Hemet police arrested two suspects, one a convicted felon, for seven violent attacks against the police agency that have put this small Riverside County city on edge for months, authorities announced Saturday.

Nicholas John Smit, 40, of Hemet, was charged with attempted murder of a police officer and building a potentially deadly booby trap and targeting law enforcement officers. Smit already faces charges for cultivating marijuana, the result of an earlier arrest made by Hemet police, said Chief Richard Dana.
Authorities discussed few details about the case. However, Dana said Smit made it clear that he didn’t like the police before invoking his right to remain silent.

Actually, we do in fact do that at times. But if it hasn’t been done already, its too late to do it now. I don’t mind if the cops smack some scumbag who’s been trying to kill them around, but it is illegal for a good reason. But that’s just my opinion. re: #380 JasonA

Heh. Maybe they didn’t want to risk the humiliation of having the other athletes humiliated by him.

It’s no humiliation to be beaten in a contest on unequal terms. A man with no legs but instead stumps strapped to a bicycle would also go fast in a race.

Specially shaped and tuned spring steel is just a better leg, for purposes of running on a track, than the regular human leg. A different prosthesis would be better for swimming, and so forth. Our own legs are a very good compromise, suited to the “pentathlon” called “life”.

We have all kinds of athletic events right now in which humans aided by machines compete. There’s the javelin throw, and then there’s archery. And then there’s riflery, bicycle racing, skiing, and yachting.

Even the simpler artificial limbs from earlier days conferred superiority in some realms. Imagine punting with a lead knout loaded artificial leg. You could hammer that football downrange!

During my Pilates classt this morning, I dropped a heavy piece of equipment on top of my foot - and now it hurts all the way up to my ankle, and all the way through my foot, to the sole of my foot. I can hardly walk. Elevated it for awhile, iced it, gonna do it again in a bit. I cannot believe how much this thing hurts.

Now good news - my old cat (she’s about 17-18 years old) quit eating a couple of weeks ago, I was so worried about her. She seemed to feel fine, she was drinking water, she would sit with us and purrrrrr - she just wasn’t eating, and had lost about a pound. When you only weight 7 pounds to begin with, a one pound loss is a big deal.

She started eating again a day or two ago, and is really digging into the food. I believe she’s gained back a couple of ounces of weight. So, looks like we’ll have her around for some time, yet! She’s a good cat, has been an excellent pet, and has given us a lot of joy. So, I’m really pleased she started eating again.

Here in Chicagoland, retaliation can and does happen. Two years ago, a drunk assaulted a female convention work at the ACEN anime convention in Rosemont. The guy was quickly tackled by security but he’d already beaten the lady up. As it had happened on an upper floor, the Rosemont police took him to a stairwell to walk him down to the ground floor. He emerged from the stairwell stumbling and sporting some fresh bruises. It’s was clear to those who saw (I got this story second hand) that the cops had thrown him around to teach him not to attack women again.

The swelling is local to where I hit my foot; it’s not the entire foot. It also got worse as the day went on, I could walk on it for awhile. So I think it’s just a really bad bruise. If it looks worse/feels worse tomorrow, I’ll go in. Promise.

My kitty slowed down eating. He went from about 18 lbs to 5 lbs within about 6-8 months. But then he plateaued there for a year or more before he passed. We had him 16 yrs but he was full grown when I found him. So your kitty may be around awhile yet.

I found out later his teeth were very bad and that could have contributed to his not eating. His breath was particularly stinky. I should have known.

The problem with that is the deterioration of discipline, just like the military. if you allow professional officers to enact vengeance on people outside the law, then that becomes the institutional culture of that police department, and then they start doing it to people who aren’t cop-killers, and so on.

Spray ‘n Wash stain remover. Spray it, let it sit a bit, scrub with a toothbrush, and then wash it up with a wet cloth.

OR, pull up your carpet and replace with wood or laminate floors.

re: #418 WindUpBird

The problem with that is the deterioration of discipline, just like the military. if you allow professional officers to enact vengeance on people outside the law, then that becomes the institutional culture of that police department, and then they start doing it to people who aren’t cop-killers, and so on.

That can happen, its true.

re: #287 lostlakehiker

I see this fallacy all over the place. Even Laffer admits the Laffer curve doesn’t usually work that way.

The only time ever in American history that reducing tax rates increased revenue was once — in the Kennedy administration when the highest marginal rate was reduced from 90% to 70%. People who make big money for sporadic projects (prizefighters, movie stars) worked more, and people who make big money year round (the Fords, the Rockefellers, etc) stopped shuffling the bulk of their earnings into tax-exempt foundations.

There was economic growth after the Reagan cuts (from 70 to 50, then a little lower still) — but gov’t tax revenue did *not* increase. There just wasn’t enough growth for that. Even with budget cuts, he still exploded the deficit. The economic things he did that were really helpful was about getting inflation/interest rates under control through monetary policy, and adjusting social security. But again, deficits and nat’l debt both still went way up.

When Bush the Elder tried to solve the deficit/debt problem with tax increases, it cost him his party’s support. Clearly it was a good idea — when Clinton raised taxes, we got the biggest peacetime economic expansion ever, and he balanced the budget. 22 million new jobs in eight years, and the stock market doubled.

Well I just took the daughter and the grandson home after consoling them for most of the afternoon. She had a cat that was her constant companion for over 20 years. Today she had to make the decision to have her put down. Poor kid. My grandson had just about as hard a time.

On Monday I have to have my 16 year old cat put down. She’s had a tumour for the last 3 years but until recently it was dormant and caused her little problem. About a week or so ago, it started growing again and now it is pressing on most of her organs. It looks to me like her kidneys have shut down.

Its going to be a sad week.

Looks like a convict to me. This sounds like someone who’s already been through the penal system before.

If not a direct gang member now possibly a former gang member with known association. The police say he is not associated with a gang. However, they have conducted raids on white supremacists gangs:

Police were first targeted Dec. 31 when a natural gas line was rerouted to fill the office of the Hemet-San Jacinto Valley Gang Task Force. Since then guns have been rigged to fire at officers, arson fires have targeted code enforcement vehicles, the Hemet police shooting range and evidence room, and a World War II training bazooka rocket was aimed to fire at the Hemet Police Station.

No one was injured in any of the attacks.

Police conducted a series of raids in March and April arresting dozens of people connected with the Vagos Motorcycle Club and the COORS Skins white supremacist gang.

No one arrested in the raids was charged in the attacks, but some men still remain jailed on parole violations and drug and weapons charges. Police said neither man arrested Friday was connected to either group.

There was no answer at Smit’s home off Yale Street Saturday afternoon. Hansen’s home sits behind a chain link fence off Highway 74, with “No Trespassing” signs. A black and tan dog wandered in the yard, filled with scrap metal garbage and abandoned cars, next to a tire shop.

Smit pleaded guilty last month to five felonies of cultivating marijuana after being arrested by Hemet police in July 2009, according to court records. He was scheduled to be sentenced to three years in prison July 16.

Hansen had prior convictions of arson, criminal threats and assault, resulting in prison sentences.

Police had no recent contact with either man or received threats leading up to or during the attacks.

More here.

Wow, I thought I had a very open and non-prejudicial mindset towards peoples sexual orientation and preferences…

Until I spent several hours over the last few days chatting with;

1: A very young man (17-18?) who wants to be a woman and dresses as one. (who is trying to get sexual re-assignment surgery and meanwhile freely sends out risque photos of “herself” and wants to know what you think.)

2: A 35ish woman who wants to be a man. (Who is doesn’t want the surgery but just wants to dress and be treated as a man. Who also by the way is actually gorgeous, curvaceous, and very sexily photogenic.)

3: A 21 year old male mechanical engineering student who is the “boyfriend” of both. (all three live together communally, don’t ask me how that works or who beds down with whom or when, I was kinda scared to ask.)

My mind is sorta blown now…I have no idea what to think about most of that, I just know that I can’t quite manage to wrap my mind around it. I guess I’m just not young or openminded enough to understand.

I see this fallacy all over the place. Even Laffer admits the Laffer curve doesn’t usually work that way.

We had a peace dividend, and military spending dropped. Overall spending as a percent of GDP dropped as well. In the final analysis, all government spending is taxes. If the government runs a deficit, then some of the tax is collected indirectly, by way of inflation. But it’s still collected, because in the physical economy, the government laid hands on thus and so amounts of real goods and services.

This table, available through Volokh’s pages, (Historical Tables, Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2009) gives on page 26 a list by year of receipts and outlays as percentage of GDP, year by year.

Receipts went up during the Clinton years, but the main thing is that outlays dropped as a share of GDP. So from the perspective I explained above, taxation dropped.

Rational people take into account the inflation tax, along with any other taxes. They take into account the prospect of future tax increases that will be made necessary because of current deficits, or, if there is a balanced budget, they take into account the reasonable hope that taxes may not, after all, be raised any time soon.

Date…………………………tax receipts as % gdp, expenditures as % gdp.

Keep in mind that this is federal intake and outlay, and states and municipalities also collect taxes.

I guess I should have given this history as my third example. Clinton cut “taxes” (to be precise, he cut spending because even though he increased spending on almost everything, he cut military spending and that more than made up for the rest) and the economy improved. Note that govt intake increased from 17.5 percent of GDP in 1983 to 18.2 percent in 1988, while Reagan was president, notwithstanding your claim that it dropped. It then did drop, during the Bush I recession.

The stock market doubled, if you count the dotcom bubble as real. But seriously, it would have popped even if Gore had won in 2000.

Three friends generally don’t work well together. Not a hard and fast rule, of course, but usually two of the three will bond and leave the third out, even if it isn’t sexual. Or one will get jealous of the other two. You see it with kids a lot.

Well, Friends with Benefits (we used another term) you don’t really care cuz it’s mostly about the benefits. That goes by the wayside, too. I’m talking committed relationships. I mean it’s hard enough getting along with one person let alone two, and sharing a man? Oh there’s a bright idea.

Some ‘Alex’ videos from YouTube:
