Amazing Spider-Man #59, April 1968

Arts • Views: 9,037

Tonight’s cover image from the Lizard Collection is one of my favorites — a classic John Romita action scene, bursting with kinetic teenage angst. That’s Peter Parker’s unrequited love Mary Jane Watson onstage in the go-go boots, shakin’ her thang while Spider-Man secretly protects her from thugs behind the curtain — even as his arachnoid heart is breaking. It’s a powerful piece of pop artwork.

If you want more details on this issue, here’s the storyline.

Hmmm... "The Brand of the BRAINWASHER!" it says...

What if we did a poll to find out which "brand" that would be in these days?

I had the misfortune of hearing her voice come out of my Volkswagen's speakers on some conservative talker's show a couple months back when I was clicking around AM radio. It was all the usual crazy, only now read by the author! Ugh.

Don't malign Puck like that. He actually got his life in partial order and has proven at least decent as a father, if memory serves. Pam Geller has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Keep 'em. Bullfrogs are cool. They're big and they eat lots of bugs.

Nothing eats frogs.
Frogs put out some sort of sticky, nasty tasting stuff on their skin - nothing messes with frogs.
If you think they'll be a problem, get 'em now.

Crispy Fried Frog Legs

2 to 2 1/2 pounds small frog leg
1/3 cup lemon juice
crushed ice
1/3 cup milk
2 eggs -- separated
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
salt and pepper
2 cups all-purpose flour
vegetable oil for deep frying

Wash frog legs thoroughly. Place in a large bowl; sprinkle with lemon juice, and cover with crushed ice. Refrigerate 1 to 3 hours. In a small bowl, whisk together milk, egg yolks, and 2 teaspoons oil. Beat egg whites until stiff; fold into milk and egg yolk mixture. Sprinkle frog legs with salt and pepper; dip each in milk-egg mixture, then dredge in flour. Heat vegetable oil in a deep-fryer or skillet to 375°. Fry frog legs until golden brown. When you remove the frog legs transfer to paper towels to drain.
Serves 4 to 6.

261 Bagua  Sat, Jul 3, 2010 8:48:58pm

Bagua's Sauteed Frog Legs with Tomato Garlic Butter

* 1 pound large frog legs
* 1 cup all-purpose flour
* 1 tablespoon Sekret herbs and spices.
* 1/4 cup salted butter
* 1/4 cup minced shallots
* 3 tablespoons minced garlic
* 1/2 cup chopped fresh tomatoes, peeled and seeded
* Salt
* Freshly ground black pepper
* 1/2 cup dry white wine
* 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley leaves

Directions

Cut the frog legs in half. Season both the legs and flour with Sekret herbs and spices. In a large saute pan, over medium heat, melt the butter. Dredge the frog legs in the seasoned flour and shake to remove any excess flour. Add the frog legs to the hot pan and saute until golden, turning as needed, about 2 to 3 minutes each side. Add the shallots and garlic and saute for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 1 minute. Add the wine, simmer for 2 minutes, then stir in the parsley. Remove from the heat and serve.

Didn't we have this conversation? I had frog legs once. It tasted like chicken to me. Kinda gamey chicken. But it was entirely too creepy seeing those little legs sprawled on the plate. I'm a fan of amphibians and reptiles anyway.

We had a giant toad (frog? I don't know which) who used to sit in the cat dish outside. About fist size. I don't know where he came from. We called him Mr. Toad.

He has had that, but not during that course.

The ones he has seen are usually sort of exploded, from being brought up too quickly from down really deep. But he has cooked it, and tried it. Said it has a texture and taste similar to lobster - it's a good, mild white sea meat.

Anywho, Seguin does 4th of July right. Want a slice of life in the Lone Star State? Here's one from today:

The Guadalupe County Polka & Conjunto Club (and that alone should tell you something about this part of the state right there) had a float with a band. So they're playing some old-time polka when the band leader raises his hands, music stops cold.

"Viva America! Viva Seguin!" they all shout, and the crowd goes nuts.

"Viva!" I found myself screaming as they broke into a conjunto tune favored by a good many of our neighbors and fellow townsfolk.

Viva America! Viva Seguin!

THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY NIGHT!!!!

What was the weirdest thing they served him?

We ate cattails, lizards, frogs, Sago palm (including learning to make flour from the pith), grubs, every other kind of damn bug that could be caught, snakes, mice, multiple forest greens, and even some roots and tubers when we could find them.

Man really is an omnivore, or at least the six of us proved it to ourselves for two very long and not very happy weeks in the bush. You'll eat just about anything if your motivated enough by hunger...

It just grows back like frog skin.

Sarah doesn't grow frog skin. She skins progs to replace the skin that is flayed off of her every day by people like me.

Poor progs.

That is always what I loved most about Michael, he wasn't afraid to call out the buffoons who busily make Christians look like idiots, or even worse dishonest unethical idiots.

Instead of the "Remove your brains at the door" policy that most theological sites have his posters mainly exceed in intelligence and scriptural grounding. Whenever my spirit needs a lift I just have to go read over there for a while.

To dreamworld.

I had the strangest one the other night, I was doing electrical work on a sign at a McDonalds after hours so the manager had given me the keys. I left the front door open when I was out working on the sign and came back to find all kinds of people had wandered in and were busily making food.

They were making a mess of the place and I tried to talk them into leaveing but no one would listen, then the cops showed up. It was an extremely detailed dream...I wonder what Freud would have to say about it?

It was about your own desire to stop working and have fun making all kinds of eats at the McDo. Sort of like a kid's fantasy of taking over the local Baskin Robbins. Except the adult in you knew it was wrong - and hence the 'cops' (your super-ego) showing up.

Five cents, please.

I'm retired, and even before that I hadn't worked "in the field" in ages (well 10 years anyway), I owned the business. I actually got up about two hours early that day because I didn't want to risk going back to sleep and having that bummer of a dream starting up again. It was very detailed, and I remembered every bit of it after waking which doesn't usually happen, for me as a electrician it was kinda like one of those "going to school/class without any clothes on" dreams.

It was mortifying...

Ah, one of those. I had the recurring high school dreams where I would be walking backwards and only wearing socks. Been a while since I had those.

My dreams evolved over time. I used to get a lot of flying dreams -- the type where you do so without an aircraft. I used to fly everywhere in those dreams. The interesting part was that I seemed to have a lot of control in those dreams. Would get hairy when I had to "fly" between wires and such.

I used to dream that I was John Wayne in a fucking Maidenform Bra. Then I joined LGF and became a red-blooded Amurrican Wingnut and the dreams stopped.

Actually, I kind of miss them.
