Good morning and a happy 4th of July, fellow lizards. What’s the good word?
The Boss…Good morning and happy 4th..
Born down in a dead man’s town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that’s been beat too much
‘Til you spend half your life just covering up
[chorus:]
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I got in a little hometown jam
And so they put a rifle in my hands
Sent me off to Vietnam
To go and kill the yellow man
[chorus]
Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says “Son if it was up to me”
I go down to see the V.A. man
He said “Son don’t you understand”
[chorus]
I had a buddy at Khe Sahn
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They’re still there, he’s all gone
He had a little girl in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms
Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I’m ten years down the road
Nowhere to run, ain’t got nowhere to go
I’m a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I’m a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

Sometimes simple is best.
Or if you want to kick up that grilled chicken a notch, get yourself some basil, garlic, EVOO, walnuts or pine nuts, and mix into a pesto (you can add parmesan to add some more creaminess). Real simple - and takes no more than 5 minutes to do.

Bacon is dirt simple. Pick up this book - you’ll want it for everything else it offers - and find a source for pork belly in your area.
And if you’re in the Ann Arbor area next year, you could sign up for Bacon Camp.
We have an old 50’s era underground bomb shelter I might be able to convert into a root cellar, but it’s a PITA to get in and out of - steep ladder - so I’ll probably settle for a freezer out in the garage someday.

I’ve generally found the best method is to cook on a medium heat, turning roughly every 2-3 minutes, allowing a light blackening of the outside. Still plenty juicy, but should cook thoroughly.

Helpful hint - par-cook it in the oven first, or even in the microwave, then throw it on the grill for a few minutes per side to get some grill marks and smoke.

Here’s something else to celebrate:
Federal judge voids Pennsylvania’s blasphemy law
A federal judge has struck down Pennsylvania’s blasphemy statute — a law that forbids the use of certain blasphemous and profane words in the naming of a corporation — with a ruling that clears the way for the plaintiff to use the name “I Choose Hell Productions” for his film company.
In his 68-page opinion in Kalman v. Cortes , U.S. District Judge Michael M. Baylson found that “the statute’s plain language makes apparent its predominantly religious purpose.”
Baylson also found that the law “unequivocally excludes only one religious perspective but not the other, as it permits speech deemed reverent to religious beliefs, yet excludes speech deemed irreverent to religious beliefs.”
Passed in 1977, the statute prohibits words that constitute “blasphemy” or “profane cursing or swearing,” or that “profane the Lord’s name” when registering a corporate name.
The impetus for the law, Baylson found, was a wave of complaints from religious leaders about a McKeesport, Pa., businessman’s decision to name his store “The God Damn Gun Shop.”
Fast-forward 30 years to September 2007 when George Kalman, an independent filmmaker based in Downingtown, Pa., filed an application to name his company “I Choose Hell” with the business processing section of the Corporation Bureau of the Pennsylvania Department of State.
Kalman’s application was rejected under the blasphemy law and he changed the name to ICH Productions.
And then he called the ACLU.
Attorney Mary Catherine Roper of the American Civil Liberties of Pennsylvania filed suit along with attorneys Thomas H. Lee II and Matthew Bleich of Dechert seeking to strike the law down on First Amendment grounds as both an infringement on free speech rights and an impermissible entanglement with religion that violated the Establishment Clause.
But Chief Deputy Attorney General Barry N. Kramer, arguing on behalf of Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro A. Cortes, said the statute should survive the constitutional challenge because its purpose was to protect the public from offensive, indecent and profane expression.
Kramer noted that Pennsylvania officials recently revised the list of words considered to be “suspect” in order to eliminate the religious words “Christ,” “damn,” “God,” “hell,” and “Jesus.”
But Baylson was unimpressed, saying the deletion of the religious words “fails to remedy the impermissible entanglement with religion that the statute requires.”

The last couple times I’ve done chicken on the grill, I went the redneck route and did Beer Butt Chicken. This worked out crazy well - indirect heat for about an hour and a half, basted several times with cayenne, lemon juice and coconut milk. I just put ‘em on raw, and they came out perfect.

The Little green football prayer list
This day in History.. July 4th 1776
In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims the independence of the United States of America from Great Britain and its king. The declaration came 442 days after the first volleys of the American Revolution were fired at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts and marked an ideological expansion of the conflict that would eventually encourage France’s intervention on behalf of the Patriots.
Let us pray..
Lord Almighty we pray this morning for the nation of Israel. Hold up their Navy and give them Strength and wisdom. We pray this morning that you grant grace to the men and women serving in the IDF. Hold your people in your strong arms Dear Lord and protect them forever.
We pray today for the Gulf Coast of America and for all those whose lives are affected by the oil spill. We pray for the environment that is being damaged.
We pray for Roi this morning…Because of the Oil spill he may be out of work.. Find him work we pray.
We pray for our Veterans today. [Link: www.drumhike.com…]

Prairiefire: Health for Family and friends
Mcspiff: if you could add my uncle to the list. He went in for surgery today and it didn’t go so well. Extra organs had to come out, etc. Still just hearing bits and pieces now. But any prayers would be greatly appreciated.

I have 3 biotherms.
I’ve never used those. I’ve got one of these, which are crazy expensive, but built like tanks, and the readout “settles” in about a second - excellent for checking small things as they cook, especially on the grill where holding your hand over fire tends to hurt after a while.

From earlier this week:
Chavez has drawn close to Syria and Iran, and cut ties with Israel last year to protest its military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
“We have common enemies,” Chavez said, describing them as “the Yankee empire, the genocidal state of Israel.”
Chavez had particularly strong words for Israel throughout Assad’s visit. He reiterated his view Saturday that the Golan Heights - captured from Syria by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war - should one day be returned to Syria.
“Someday the genocidal state of Israel will be put in its place, in the proper place and hopefully a real democratic state will be born,” Chavez said Saturday. “But it has become the murderous arm of the Yankee empire - who can doubt it? - which threatens all of us.”

re: #138 MandyManners
State-sponsored anti-Semitism has reared its ugly head in the West.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez appears to be leading a drive to make his nation Judenrein, according to a documentary by Nora Zimmett that was broadcast Wednesday night on the HDNet World Report.
Chavez expelled Israel’s ambassador to the country during the IDF counterterror Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, conducted in the first three weeks of January 2009. Simultaneously, he drew closer to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has repeatedly vowed to wipe the Jewish State off the global map.
Venezuelan Jewish activist Sammy Eppel, for example, told her that he personally has been threatened. “Of course I’m afraid,” he said. “I have a family, I have children… But I hope that those things would never actually happen – those things that they promise me over the phone that they’re going to do to me or to my family.”
The report cited a police raid on the Hebraica School, based on an alleged “tip” that the institution was involved in an assassination plot. “No evidence was ever found,” noted Zimmett.
Also documented were the frequent publications in the state-run media calling for the expulsion of the Jews, and the speeches by Chavez himself, comparing Zionists to Nazis on national television. The Venezuelan president also had other complaints about the Jews – “the descendants of those who crucified Christ” – implying they are the ones that have all the wealth in the world, another common libel.

Mr. El – Aissami is a Venezuelan national of Syrian descent who, before becoming Minster of Interior and Justice, occupied the position of Deputy Interior Minister for Public Security. His father, Carlos Aissami, is the head of the Venezuelan branch of the Iraqi Baath political party. Before the invasion of Iraq, he held a press conference in which he described himself as a Taliban and called Osama Bin Laden, “the great Mujahedeen, Sheik Osama bin Laden.” Tarek’s great-uncle Shibli el-Aissami was a prominent ideologist and assistant to the party’s secretary general in Baghdad during the Saddam Hussein regime.[1]

Pet snake indeed. I think it’s been over for awhile and I just didn’t realize it. He was very, very good at keeping the schedule, keeping the routine, saying just enough of the right things. What I suppose I will never know is when it all started to go away or when he started having relationships via email & phone with other women. It doesn’t matter.
I have always been old school, so he never spent a night under my roof as I have a young daughter. So the good news is the “over” part will only really change my life. Which is good.
My BFF & his wife, were adopted me as her bestie many years ago, are insisting on the Italy trip. I will go, breathe in new air and welcome new experiences. I can’t wait for the food, the architecture, the beauty. Time for good things. I need positive to replace the last two years of my life.

Muslim women will honor British soldiersGene, July 1st 2010, 3:37 pm
Zubeida Malik of BBC Radio 4 reports on a group of Muslim women who will be laying a wreath later this week at the National Memorial Arboretum in honor of British troops.
The women say they were motivated by their revulsion at the Islamist extremist demonstration in Luton last year and the threats to disrupt commemorations at the repatriation of dead service personnel at Wooton Bassett.
The report includes the following comment from RAF Group Captain Zahir al-Huq of the Armed Forces Muslim Association:
Generally the public doesn’t realize that there are Muslims serving and fighting and willing and prepared to die for their country. We’re not different from anybody else in the armed forces, whether you’re a Christian or a Jew or a Hindu or a Sikh. We’re all one body, we’re all one family.

Happy Unbirthday, America
….the causes of our malaise are all too apparent — a depressed economy, out-of-control government spending with the largest deficits since World War II, an intractable ecological disaster with no plan how to end it, a continuing global war against an enemy we dare not even name, a mad theocracy on the verge of nuclear weapons, and so on.
Worst of all, however, may be the growing cancer inside our own house. Difficult as our problems may be, they can be resolved democratically in a society under the rule of law. But we have reason to believe that these days, that most basic of all our legal principles, that keystone of our system, one which was fought for by generations of Americans, equality before the law, is under attack at the center of our government.
….
And on that depressing note, Happy Fourth of July!

BioLogos: Don’t tell people that Genesis is fiction
I’m not sure what’s going on at the Templeton-funded accommodationist website BioLogos, but lately they seem to be reviving Biblical literalism. First there was the website’s waffling about whether Adam and Eve were real people, and now, as reported by commenter Scott on yesterday’s “Tea Party Jesus” post, BioLogos is retreating from the notion of Genesis as metaphor.
You’d think that, for a website devoted to reconciling faith with the facts of science, the idea of Genesis as inspirational fiction would not be negotiable. If anything is absolutely, rock-bottom true, it’s that life evolved, beginning about 4 billion years ago, and that the creation myth of Genesis is completely wrong.
Yes, you’d think that, but it isn’t so. To buttress the idea of a literal Genesis, BioLogos has posted a short video, “The danger of preaching on Genesis, by Joel Hunter, a preacher at the oddly named “Northland, a Church Distributed.”

Happy Unbirthday, America
Here’s the worst part:
But, no, Eric Holder apparently can’t give up his grievance, his sense that only whiteys can be racists. Black Panthers are still cool to Eric… I guess on some level. Maybe he really wants to preserve racism. Maybe he’s not really ready to give it up. I hate to say it, but that’s the Eric Holder I see. He’s not a progressive. He’s a reactionary. And what makes that particularly bad is that it metastasizes across our entire justice system. It’s not just about race, bad as that is. It’s about everything. It’s a nostalgia for a corrupt world view that went rancid decades ago. That world view is running our country.
Could wingnuts please treating Eric Holder like he’s some sort of ogre. I don’t like him, but these loons keep forcing me to defend him. Watching this buffoon build hid Crazy Castle upon the sand of illogic is just sadly pathetic, not even funny,

In a report to the UN Security Council, Ban accused both countries of violating the 2006 cease-fire resolution that ended the 34-day Second Lebanon War between Israel and Hizbullah.
The UN chief said Hizbullah continues to maintain “a substantial military capacity” in violation of UN resolutions and an arms embargo, and he again called for Hizbullah and other militias to be disarmed “through a Lebanese-led political process.”
Ban said Israel continues to violate the cease-fire by conducting daily overflights of Lebanon and refuses to withdraw from the disputed northern border village of Ghajar.
The secretary-general said that both sides have violated the UN-drawn Blue Line separating them.
Ban said Israeli accusations in April that neighboring Syria had provided Scud missiles to Hizbullah — an allegation later raised by US officials — “greatly increased tensions” between Israel, Lebanon and Syria. Lebanese and Syrian authorities categorically denied any missile transfers.

Yeah, it’s made even worse by the fact that the Black panther case that they’re all worked up over is bogus. It was dropped for legal reasons, not political. The wingnuts are trying to make it a racial thing and they’re only encouraging the racists in their midst. It’s just sad to watch.

Opposing Obama’s Blueprint by Celebrating American Exceptionalism
The national bestseller The 5000 Year Leap: A Miracle that Changed the World does a masterful job of showing American exceptionalism in the context of world history. With a special focus on economic freedom, this book shows that the principles of liberty enshrined by our Founders in our Declaration of Independence, and later in the U.S. Constitution, led to an inconceivable level of prosperity, safety and happiness in this country that the rest of the world looked at in shocked disbelief.
Yet President Obama doesn’t believe in American exceptionalism.
….
On the Fourth of July, we celebrate our Independence Day—our freedom from oppressive government and our commitment to individual freedom. In doing so, we oppose Barack Obama’s vision, and his blueprint for America.Happy Fourth of July.

And now for news you just can’t make up.
A REVELLER at a fancy dress party in one of Dublin’s best known gay bars attacked her ex-girlfriend in a row over a novelty wrestler’s suit.
Sandra Talbot (32) assaulted her ex-partner with a bottle she had hidden under her costume in a fit of rage at the George pub, after more than a year of acrimony following their break-up.
A court heard she lashed out at victim Adrienne Martin in a row that started over a novelty sumo wrestler’s suit that Talbot was wearing. The row developed as the victim tried to wave at a man dressed as a Snickers bar, the court heard.
Ms Martin told Dublin District Court how she was left with a large lump on her temple and still suffered from panic attacks because of the incident.

Speaking out both sides of his mouth.
A Saudi official told the government-controlled Saudi Press, “This is untrue altogether”, and expressed bewilderment at the French paper’s willingness to make such charges without verifying the details.
The official added that Saudi Arabia’s position was “clear”.
According to the Le Figaro report, King Abdullah made the comment during a June 5 meeting with French Defense Minister Herve Morin, just days after Israel’s deadly takeover of a Gaza-bound flotilla.
The report emphasized that “military and diplomatic elements” confirmed that king did in fact make the comment.
Last month Saudi Arabia denied a report in the London Times that Riyadh was planning to allow Israel to use its airspace in order to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Other than these villages being filled with Hizb’allh arms, perhaps another reason they’re blocking UNIFIL is found in a link I posted earlier:
The system, which one report stated has been placed in the mountains of Lebanon near Israel’s northern border, also would allow Hizbullah to achieve accuracy if it attacks Israel with missiles. In the Second Lebanon War, Israeli planes were able to fly over southern Lebanon without interference.

Well, it is true that if the UN found radar arrays they would report it. Still, Syria is overestimating their chances if they think such such systems can save them. The most forward radars do is give you time to prepare (as they did for the RAF 70 years ago). The problem for Syria is that their air defense squadrons stink compared to the IAF, nor do they have a truly robust SAM capability. And those radars only would warn of the first wave, after which they’d be knocked off the air by the HARMs we’ve supplied to Israel.

The picture is not as serene as a quick, occasional glance at daily newspapers, or even a detailed perusal thereof, might provide.
In short, five people — a civilian Thai worker, a policeman and three soldiers — were murdered, and a soldier was killed by friendly fire. Two Israelis were critically wounded, nine were moderately wounded, and 232 were lightly hurt in terror attacks or while fighting against terrorists.
A total of 139 rockets were fired during the six months, while 130 Arabs were apprehended with knives, of whom 22 admitted intending to perpetrate a terror attack. There were 60 shooting attacks, bombs, missiles fired, and attempted infiltrations at the Gaza border fence.

That’s another reason the Hezzies may be trying to crowd the UN. As long as their SCUD base is unknown, it’ll be harder to prevent launches. They will not, however, be able to fire them off like Iraq could in 1991. Hezbollah area of control is much smaller than the western desert area of Iraq. Moreover, much of that area is not usable by the wheeled SCUD launchers. Once the launchers start moving, the Israelis can find them. Getting them before they fire their first missile, though, might not happen.

The Progress spacecraft carries 1,918 pounds of propellant, 110 pounds of oxygen, 220 pounds of water and 2,667 pounds of experiment equipment, spare parts and other supplies to the station. It launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on June 30. An attempted docking Friday, July 2, was aborted when telemetry between the Progress and the space station was lost about 25 minutes before its planned docking.

Let’s not forget Finkelstein and his book The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering .
I first ran across Latuff in reading an Alan Dershowitz article. Dershowitz laid into Finklestein for working with Latuff after Latuff published a cartoon showing Dershowitz masturbating to images of dead Lebanese civilians under the caption “Israeli Peep Show”. Utter hate and contempt for the truth. Goebbels would have been proud to meet Latuff.

Yep! It’s delish.
Boysenberry - Viognier syrup
1LB fresh boysenberries (frozen are not good) - can also use raspberries
4 cups Viognier (preferably steel-cask aged)
3 cups sugar
2 cups raw honey
Wash the berries, place in a clean glass bowl. Crush them, pour half the Viognier and allow to stand for 24 hours. Be sure to press and stir them regularly. Put in fridge overnight.
Strain the liquid into heavy duty saucepan. Add honey and remaining viognier, bring to a boil. Add remaining sugar. Allow hard boil for 5 minutes.
Bring to room temp, bottle it. Make ice cubes from it with fresh mint leaves. Whatever you like!!!

I looked at the TSA site and it’s interesting. They do recognize the problem and claim they have “sought prosecution” over 200 employees. Ok, they didn’t actually say they prosecuted them… and then go on to say that’s it’s a minuscule percentage. Weeeeak.
[Link: blog.tsa.gov…]
… Unfortunately, TSA has experienced its problems with theft. To date, we have terminated and sought prosecution for about 200 of our employees who have been accused of stealing, either from checked bags, passengers’ carry-ons or fellow employees. While 200 out of more than 110,000 employees is a minuscule percentage (less than one half of one percent) over the short life of the agency, one theft is too many when you are in the position of public trust as we are.

That’s another reason I’m not fond of letting those people unionize. Given the unions would demand a hearings for any TSA worker accused of anything, even if it was caught on tape, you’d end up with O’Hare having to establish a “rubber room”. That last is New York schools term not used in Chicago for where teachers accused of misconduct wait to have their cases heard. Some wait years, all the while getting paid.

I understand. But I’d make an exception. And if I got written up at work, that would be OK. I’d be too pissed to be effective if I didn’t work to get things sorted out. Sometimes, I have to finish a thing, no matter what else fails to be done. I just can’t focus on anything else.

Is TSA a union now?

One guy was in the rubber room for almost a decade if I can recall an article correctly. They are getting rid of them but wow, what a sweet deal just to sit around in purgatory and get paid for it.
Not if you became a teacher to actually teach. Getting paid to do nothing is only a dream for time-servers and assholes. Thankfully, this is one problem Chicago doesn’t have. Here, teachers awaiting a hearing are given clerical work to do at CPS HQ and the cases normally get resolved in 3 months. I’ve heard of a 6-month wait, but in that case the delay was caused by the need to authenticate a piece of evidence and there was a lab backlog.

Lots of factors… Rolex? Well for a $5-50,000 watch, I might hang out. But if I’ve planned a vacation and I’ve already forked out a few hundred (in the very least), I’ll deal with the $30 watch later.

In the beginning
I believed every word that you said
Now that you’re gone
My world is in shreds
Oh you loved me and left me
You took all the things that I needed so bad
I’m standing here wondering
Where is the love that I had
CHORUS:
Give me silver, blue and gold
The color of the sky I’m told
My rainbow is overdue
In the beginning
There was something of love that was mine
Now that it’s gone
Whoa I’m crying
Oh the time that it takes for a love to grow cold
Is a wonder to me
I’m walking around with my head hanging down
Tell me where is she
CHORUS
Don’t forsake me ‘cause I love you (2x)

Now of course i’m not someone whose opinion you can take professionally. But AFAIK, it’s fairly well-accepted that you can’t start lifting weights (i.e. using nautilus/resistance machines and dumbbells) soon enough.
Using lighter weights and lots of repetitions will ensure that you don’t hurt yourself, and the process by which your muscles rebuild themselves from the microtears caused by resistance training is itself a calorie-burning process. In addition, the strength gains will hasten your ability to pursue more intensive cardio routines.
Interval training, where you do resistance exercise->light bike->resistance exercise->light bike->etc, spending about 45sec on each, is a tremendous way to transform yourself in a relatively short time.
Hope the amateur, friendly advice wasn’t too presumptuous.
