NPR: Newspaper Websites Struggle to Deal with Anonymous Trolls
Here’s an interesting discussion of the pitfalls of allowing anonymous commenting on blogs and media websites, from NPR’s Talk of the Nation.

When you're anonymous you can say anything you want.... real easy to figure that one out. So, have em sign up at a minimum. OR just don't allow comments.

Trolling just reflects the lack of civility in a continuing deterioration of society. But this is nothing new. Once upon a time someone would scrawl something with a quill on a piece of parchment and nail it to the community bill board. "Post no bills."

That's nothing I know a guy who slammed almost a hundred different complaints on some church door. I hear number 96 was that the bingo events they had on Friday nights was rigged....

Trolls? I've never heard of such a strange and mysterious creature. What could they possibly be?

Pardon me if I may say, but nobody has no particular political leanings who hangs out here. But welcome in any case. I hope you play well.

We tend to be a rather passionate crowd.

It's a fun place, even if it's a bit hot and heavy at times. If you want to know the main idea here, it's that we're anti-Idiotarian. That's a non-partisan concept that most of us get.

Although it does seem oddly appropriate that this thread would expose a few. Work beckons in nary a few hours. As always, see ya on the other side. G'nite all. (once again)

Ah, trolls. I remember 'em back in the day on Usenet's "alt.atheism." Birthplace of the now famous Invisible Pink Unicorn, Knight of BAAWA (Bad Assed Atheist With Attitude), and the infamous Evil Atheist Conspiracy.

This is the nature of the beast. This quote is older than the HTTP. I think.
On the internet, no knows you're a dog.

Well, nobody who goes by the name of darthstar could ever be considered an anonymous poster.

ahh Usenet... I was a Usenet admin when the first SPAM hit Usenet. The Green Card Lawyers SPAM. I bought a T-shirt commemorating the event and still have it. It doesn't fit, of course. Time seems to shrink old T-shirts... :) Late 80's or early 90's i think.

What is it about the annonymity of the mob that turns people into bestial idiots? Trolling is only a minor manifestation.

I don't think I've ever posted anonymously - I've said many, many stupid things on the Internet, some of which I regret deeply. Some of them probably could have gotten me in trouble. But I don't regret not posting anonymously, I regret posting in the first place.
My own thought is that one needs a combination of a thicker skin and a greater sensitivity to what one posts. Posting often is never going to be perfect.
The anonymous trolls seem to have found another solution: unleash a tidal wave of hate, and because one is part of an unsigned bandwagon, feel justified and ready for the next round.
