Angle’s ‘Slush Fund’ Becomes ‘Important First Step’

Wingnuts • Views: 2,927

Remember earlier today when Sharron Angle was quoted calling the $20 billion BP escrow fund a “slush fund?”

Well, what she really meant to say was that it’s an important first step.

Which is a little like a slush fund, isn’t it? Kinda?

There’s been some confusion this morning regarding my position on BP and the oil spill.

Having had some time to think about it, the caller and I shouldn’t have used the term “slush fund”; that was incorrect.

My position is that the creation of this fund to compensate victims was an important first step— BP caused this disaster and they should pay for it. But there are multiple parties at fault here and there should be a thorough investigation. We need to look into the actions, (or inactions) of the Administration and why the regulatory agency in charge of oversight was asleep at the wheel while BP was cutting corners. Every party involved should be held fully accountable.

Oh good grief. While driving we caught a few seconds of her on Hannity. “First thing-Let’s talk campaign. not about web sites…” Then despite a 1st gear hairpin turn on a Highway 39 cliff I reached out and hit the button. AM radio OFF. Hence only a few seconds. Priorities…

She meant “slush fund.” After all, the leaders of the GOP, Beck and Limbaugh, have been promoting this idea. She should just run with it rather than walking it back. If it’s good for ratings then it’s got to be good for winning elections.

Apologies for going off topic this early, but a court has just ruled DOMA unconstitutional because it violates…..wait for it……a state’s right to define marriage, and the 10th Ammendment reserving all rights not allocated to the Federal Goverment to the States. I can’t wait to see what the 10th Ammendment fetishists make of this one.

Sorry to go OT so soon, but I want this posted prominently.

I owe several people here a real apology.

You know who you are.

I opened my big fat yap in the middle of another horrible personality spat on an overnight thread and ended up making things a whole lot worse. And I did it without even bothering to find out what the actual skandalon was, which, it turns out, had already been deleted.

So, my deepest apology to those whom I offended. One, in particular. And also her spouse. And anyone else who was hurt by my completely unnecessary mixing it up.

The humor is not lost on me that I received my timeout for a post urging Charles to go ahead and hand out more timeouts.

I apologize to him, too.

I have never in my life seen someone acting like the king of the world when they have done nothing to deserve it. (Well, I have. But this is the most recent example)

I’ll say the same thing about LeBron that I did about A-Rod when he announced he was staying with the Yankees during the 9th inning of the 2007 World Series.

“Win a championship before you start acting like you’re big shit.”

Yeah, he’ll make any team better. Way better. But the way he is conducting himself is way over the top considering that he has never reached the pinnacle of his sport.

You know who never hosted a one-hour primetime special to announce what team he was going to play for? Micheal Jordan. Or Kobe. Or Magic. Or Bird. Or Shaq. Or many other all-time greats.

You know what they all have that LeBron doesn’t? Multiple championship rings.

23 JamesWI  Thu, Jul 8, 2010 5:53:45pm

Wait, so this regulatory agency is one of the ones that we should keep? I just get so confused when the tea party acts like they hate all government regulation, until something goes wrong. Then it’s the government regulators fault for not regulating enough. Then, when they set and enforce the new regulations, regulation is back to being evil.

This game is fun. No matter what happens, the government is to blame!

I think you are misinterpreting my point. The fact that LeBron doesn’t have a ring doesn’t make him bad. He is still a hall of famer.

I’m talking about this absurd “look at me, look at me” primetime special. That would be gaudy even by Deon Sanders standards.

If Jordan did something like this after coming back from baseball, I wouldn’t be as critical. Why? Because at that point Michael Jordan had three rings, was obviously by far the best basketball of his generation and was, in fact, Michael Fucking Jordan. LeBron, meanwhile, isn’t the best player of his generation. He isn’t even the best basketball player right now. That’s Kobe.

I see. Except that from my (possibly biased) perspective, this firestorm was created around him first, and the primetime special was a response.

The Obama-is-Muslim idiocy is being recycled big time in the nut-o-sphere, though it has mutated. Various writers and bloggers, from VDH to nut Jeffrey Kuhner (Why Obama is a cultural Muslim posted today) are trying the back door approach.

This sort of idiocy has gone on for way too long, as have the dog-whistle racism of so much of the right wing pundits/talkers. It’s become a real detriment to sound polity in this country.

I changed my avatar back when it was becoming clear that Obama - the person and the story - was going to be problems for a larger-than-I-wish chunk of this country. (It was easy to tell when Hillary’s campaign were floating all those trial balloons.) I probably should have done it a bit sooner, but even when I did put up that avatar it did get some notice and succeeded in flushing out a few people.

Now, I’m bored with the avatar and since so many images like it have been spread around the net my avatar looks derivative, so I need to come up with a new one.

Not sure what it will be, but I’m working on it. Given hour backwards part of our society is turning there is plenty of material with which to work.

re: #69 freetoken

Obama as a “Cultural Muslim” sounds like a way to make sure he can never escape being branded as the “evil other”. It’s sick and dangerous.

Miami is going to be ridiculously top-heavy in talent next year, with three bonifide superstars in the starting five. Problem is, the second five are all going to be either first-year players or minimum-salary types. This type of balance won’t bode as well for the grind of a regular season as they are hoping for.

From Bill Simmons, an ESPN guy I really like.

You realize how many minutes these guys would log on a three-man team? About 42-44 minutes for 100 games … and if anyone missed an extended stretch of games, then that would put even more pressure on the other two. Crazy. No way they win more than 50, especially with teams gunning for them every night. We’ve also never seen two perimeter superstar alpha dogs coexist for an NBA title — not even when Jerry West and Elgin Baylor teamed up with Wilt Chamberlain against the aging Celtics in 1969. LeBron would have to accept becoming Mega-Pippen to Wade’s Jordan. (Yeah, right.)

Even during the final quarter of the 2008 gold-medal game, when everyone on the American team was staring at each other wondering who was going to step up against a red-hot Spain team, there were a few minutes of tentative, “I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes here” basketball before Kobe said, “Screw it, get out of my way” and took over the key portion of the game.

Well, at some point, Wade and LeBron will have one of those 2008 Spain moments … but what happens if both guys say, “Screw it, get out of my way”?

He’s not thinking this through. For 5 years, Cleveland felt that LBJ passed too much.

He’s not Jordan, he’s Magic (with hops). Magic could have played with Jordan. LBJ can play with Wade. Kobe isn’t the best player in basketball…he’s the best scorer in basketball.

Being on a good team means that you don’t have to play every minute. LBJ is the only guy other than Kareem to win 2 MVP’s by the age of 25. There may not be many athletes who are willing to give up points and minutes honestly in pursuit of a title, but I believe that LBJ does.

Whether they can attract enough bench talent is another question.

Another good one from Bill: (BTW, this was written yesterday, but he was guessing he would sign with the Heat.)

I think it’s a cop-out. Any super-competitive person would rather beat Dwyane Wade than play with him. Don’t you want to find the Ali to your Frazier and have that rival pull the greatness out of you? That’s why I’m holding out hope that LeBron signs with New York or Chicago (or stays in Cleveland), because he’d be saying, “Fine. Kobe, Dwight and Melo all have their teams. Wade and Bosh have their team. The Celtics are still there. Durant’s team is coming. I’m gonna go out and build MY team, and I’m kicking all their asses.” That’s what Jordan would have done. Hell, that’s what Kobe would have done.

In May, after the Cavs were ousted in the conference semifinals, I wrote that LeBron was facing one of the greatest sports decisions ever: “winning (Chicago), loyalty (Cleveland) or a chance at immortality (New York).”

I never thought he would pick “HELP!”

With that, I’m out.

ridiculous. He will sacrifice far, far more in salary by moving than he would have paid in taxes in Ohio.

Cleveland was permitted to sign him for more money than any other team because of the way that the NBA salary cap system works. He’ll make less in Miami.

Why I often comment on a candidate’s hair:

Better-Looking Politicians Get More Media Coverage

The better a politician’s looks, the higher the frequency of television news coverage, shows a new study carried out at the University of Haifa’s Department of Communication, published in the International Journal of Press/Politics.

“Earlier studies have shown that people generally tend to prefer the company of people who are physically attractive and even value them as more worthy people. Our study reveals that journalists probably behave just like the rest,” the researchers noted.

Apologies for going off topic this early, but a court has just ruled DOMA unconstitutional because it violates…wait for it…a state’s right to define marriage, and the 10th Ammendment reserving all rights not allocated to the Federal Goverment to the States. I can’t wait to see what the 10th Ammendment fetishists make of this one.

[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com…]

My prediction? A cognitive dissonance so strong it rips a hole in the Universe.

I just can’t get my head around the judge’s ruling.

He’s saying the Federal govt has to honor state laws that define marriage because of the 10th amendment (even though most states discriminate against gays), but the Feds themselves can’t discriminate against gays because of the 14th amendment?

Does this judge think the 14th amendment doesn’t apply to the states?

NOT as Hard as You might think. The 10th Amendment reserves to the states and people those powers not set forth in the US Constitution to the Federal Government. To this date, “Gays” are NOT a “Suspect Classification” per-se as are race and religion (and almost “Gender” but not quite.)
Therefore, every Gay person, as every Straight Person is entitled to marry a member of the opposite sex. Constitutionally, this is adequate, though in real life it seems silly.
As for me, I am willing to give gay couples ALL of the Rights, Privileges, Immunities and Responsibilities of Heterosexual Married Couples. Just call it something other than Marriage, please.

I don’t see an amendment happening within a few generations, too much bigotry exists. If I had a guess on how this will turn out, the Feds will eventually pass a non-discrimination law (like the ADA) which the states will have to honor if they want Federal goodies. Either that or an appropriate case (I don’t think this one is) will work its way to the SC.

A row has erupted after Blizzard - the publishers of the popular online game World of Warcraft - announced that users on its site forums would have to post under their real names.

The firm say the move is to put an end to heated online arguments and topics started purely to cause trouble.

But users reacted angrily, citing concerns about safety and privacy.

Yeah, Ferguson is a plant, I think. He just put RWR on a platform of economic glory - gag. Ferguson is a historian and writer of popular history books and he is sounding a whole lot like an ideologue (e.g., keeps saying “Keynesian” in a subtly derogatory manner without really explaining what he means.)

Krugman may be incorrect in some of his assumptions about the future, but Ferguson doesn’t impress at all.

This is the problem with so much of the media coverage of complex topics (we see it in science themes all the time - evolution, AGW):

Everything has to be reduced to two “sides”, and each “side” is given an equal amount of time. It’s just another variant of “TEACH THE CONTROVERSY”. It’s the WWE all over again - where every possible event has to be reduced to one obvious antagonist and one protagonist and they guy who runs the show manages the crowd to cheer for whomever.

Economics is way too complex to be reduced to a few catchphrases, such as what Ferguson tried to do with “morning in America”, etc.

I certainly agree with you on evolution or AGW. In the case of macroeconomics, and putting aside the Austrian “School”, there does seem to be two mainstream views with very different practical recommendations regarding economic policy. So, in this case, the two opposing views are less strained than in the topics you mentioned.

The problem is that Ferguson is not a good representative of the neoclassical school. I confess I sympathize much more with Krugman’s view for, well, ideological reasons, but damn it, I wish this program had invited a more adequate “foil”. That’s why I mentioned Cochrane and Fama. Stiglitz, Krugman and Brad DeLong are great, but I’m tired of seeing coherent, in-depth analysis from “my side” in the press and blogosphere.

Yeah, Ferguson just didn’t cut it. While he was going on about RWR and how good it was compared to the 70’s I kept hoping the host would jump in about how the deficits skyrocketed under Reagan, thus totally nullifying Ferguson’s complaint about deficits. Alas, the host did no such thing and Ferguson just kept smiling and looking pretty for the camera all the while BSing his way along.

A better foil for Krugman could have simply have asked about Japan and why very large spending by the Japanese gov’t, which has debt/GDP ratio larger than the US, didn’t get Japan out of deflation and stagnation.
