Tour De France Stage 8: Armstrong Cracks

Sports • Views: 9,609

Bottom line: Lance Armstrong probably isn’t going to make it to the podium in this year’s Tour de France. This morning was the first serious mountain stage, with two very difficult Category 1 climbs, and Armstrong couldn’t hang. He ended up almost 12 minutes behind in the General Classification.

And there are several more difficult climbing stages in the Alps coming up this week. Unless Armstrong makes an incredible recovery, he may have to grit his teeth and be happy with winning seven Tours in a row.

He had very bad luck, but another Radio Shack team member is still in the running. Lance should-- and I believe will-- ride support for him.

Let us remember that there was a time when bicycle racing was seen as even more European in nature than soccer, and look what Lance did to popularize it with Americans.

When will we see a Lance Armstrong of soccer?

Seven Tours in a row. That's Roger Maris territory. That record will not fall for a long, LONG time.

Don't know about soccer, but the sheer numbers of bicycle riders on high tech super light bikes has increased greatly. At least around LA anyway. Gotta be more careful on canyon roads these days.

Armstrong got injured in a fall not long ago. He must still be healing, or the healing time took away training time. Competing a bit too soon maybe. Heh, I can understand that easily enough.

Perhaps, although hell, if I just thought I had the energy to RIDE the Tour De France, let alone win it, I'd be pretty stoked. And I'm a couple years younger than Armstrong, and not a cancer survivor.

Also might help if I could ride a bike.

Of course, Lance is more than prepared to deal with the realities of aging. He's been given a second chance at life and I'm sure no longer being able to win the Tour is the least of his concerns. Each moment is no doubt a treasure to him. I wish him a very long and happy life.

To An Athlete Dying Young

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

You're probably right: perhaps in 2018 or 2022 if the USA finally produces a world champion team, people will start to get soccer mania.

Of course, demophraphic developments are going to make it inevitable that we will become a soccer-playing nation by 2050 anyways...

There's something to be said for the quiet pleasures of an unremarkable but satisfying middle age.

But then, again, my model has always been Blackadder:

"First I want to be young and wild! And then I want to be middle-aged and rich! And then I want to be old and annoy people by pretending to be deaf!"

When American cities are competing in a sports final the respective mayors usually bet representative products with each other; e.g. Philadelphia mayor offering cheese steaks.

For the World Cup Final since two royal families are involved, what do they bet on the side? A small province or duchy?

Well, if you embrace the notion that a) soccer is an outward sign of inner moral and social decline and b) America has irreversibly started that process since Jan 20, 2009, then the only bright side is that we might even win a World Cup by the end of this century

It's an American thing, we are vaguely aware of the existence of Japanese, Filipino and Latin American baseball, but would never consider them equals worthy of competing with American baseball. At least we have come to allow Canadian teams in our major leagues.

There is a baseball World Cup (started in 1938). Also the World Baseball Classic (started in 2006). World Cup was amateur only until 1998.

World Baseball Classic drawing more attention nowadays since a large number of the MLB professionals are playing in it similar to how football pros are playing in this World Cup.

Babaganoush and "redneck caviar" from the cookbook along with fresh homemade salsa for the co-workers tomorrow.

Did Reine's "ziplock omelet" recipe this morning as a test. Worked out fairly well as a concept, but I did something wrong and it came out slightly undercooked in the middle (water not quite at full boil, not in water long enough, or I needed to "spread" the mix in the baggie a bit better to increase the area of egg getting cooked efficiently. Was delicious in any case once I did a minute or so of pan cooking to finish it off.

Plan on passing that one on to my brother since he does field trips with undergraduate students and it looks like a good campground recipe.

One of my best friends told me that I was a much better cook than his wife -- but if I told her he'd said that he'd kill me. ;)

Rhine wines, mostly Riesling, but Pinot Noir is popular here, too.

Vineyards are fine for a walk most any time as long as they are not baking in the sun.
