That little fish is well into the bathypelagic zone, which starts at 1,000 metres deep. The well head is about 1524 meters deep.

What I find odd is that no one has ever asked you how you’ve come by all this very specialized knowledge - as in, do you work in the industry, or are you just making stuff up.

Reine thinks the world of you, so I have to conclude it’s the former - or similar.

On the other hand, people feel the need to troll LVQ all the time about his credentials, despite multiple assurances from Charles and others that he’s got the skills and got the talent.

Perhaps the reason is just that it’s only assholes who need to do such things?

Actually, that would work. Little explosives are used routinely in deep drilling. You drop an iron bar down the pipe to activate them, when it hits the explosive pack it explodes.

There’s been a wee bit of tension between us lately, and it was difficult for me to believe that things weren’t starting up again.

No, the point being to imply I am a “hostile asshole” as it was I who was questioning Ludwig’s credentials many months ago. Yet Ludwig and I have obviously moved beyond our troubles for several months, yet here you are baiting me with it to interrupt my BP Oil Spill updates.

I have never yet understood what “accepting the science” has to do with anything else in the world.

I totally accept the science that says we’re all fucked in the long run. Nothing in science or politics or policy or planning or planethood has ever shown me what the fuck to do about it, except perhaps to become, as LVQ already is in larval form, an ecofascist and kill a whole lotta people in the hopes that will help.

I don’t know if she knows what she’s doing, but it’s eating lots of crickets—she does feed it by hand—and seems to be growing new feathers, and be in good spirits. It knows that her RV is home, and when it gets bored with trying to fly, it hops up the steps and waits to be let back in.

If you have links, please do let me know. She reported with disgust after a web search that all of the sites basically said that if you have to ask what they need, you shouldn’t have one. They apparently don’t know my MIL if they thought that would deter her.

It is a fascinating bird. I had doves for some time. But mostly in the cage. I never knew how social they were. I also had a rescued wild dove, but it wouldn’t accept its cage when it matured. It would flap like it was trying to fly so I let it go wild.

I’m certain that rock doves (the original name for pigeons) and doves in general, go way, way back in the annals of domestication. In the middle east, people are still happy to have one or two living free somewhere on the exterior of their house. They’ll attach to a person and a place and never leave. It can go on for generations, and is considered to bring good luck, harmony and all sorts of positive things.

They’re a symbol of the freaking Holy Spirit, after all.

If you bought a largish bird or two (as in a couple) would you let them fly freely in your place? Normally, they’ll ‘home’ in a suitable cage and sleep and eat there - even if they’re freed. There’s a really adorable species of little birds called ‘Inseparables’ (at least in French) - kind of parrot-like and beautifully colored. All they like to do is hang out and be affectionate with each other….I’ll see if I can find some pics…

‘Pigeon’ is fine with me. Rock doves goes back to the time when they used to inhabit rock outcropping and cliffs. Today, it’s on rooftops and windowsills, and they’re known as pigeons.

With XP on a mid-range Dell portable that looks like it was nuked, I moved to Chrome and never looked back. Rarely ever crashes, and when it does, it remembers all the tabs that were open and put’s you right back where where. Perhaps not as many bells and whistles as firefox, but I’m certain that Google is working on all kinds of add-ons. Which I eschew: I like the leanest browser possible.

He was caught and sent back to Texas. As he was led - smiling at the TV news crew taping his return - the group passed by a wall mounted phone where upon a man standing there turned and put a gun against the instructor heads and shot Him once. The smiling offender dropped like a sack of potato’s.

It was the boy’s father.

I can understand his actions. I don’t support his actions, but I understand his mindset.

He was acquitted on temporary insanity defense by a jury.
The video has one of the LEO’s (County Sheriff?) exclaim right after the shooting the dad’s name in a comment that was emotional and sad. He was known to them.

There was the lame excuse that Polanski fled the USA because he feared the authorities, based on his experiences in the Eastern Bloc.

Of course, one has to ask, why did he flee to America then if he feared the authorities there?

According to the arguments I kept hearing, the reason he fled was because the judge and DA were looking to railroad his ass, throwing out the plea bargain agreement to probation only and instead jail him and then deport him. Of course, who was making this claim? That’s right: His lawyer.

As for the coming celebrations amongst the Hollywood crowd, expect to hear this over and over again: “She’s already forgiven him!” So long as you flee the country and pay off the victims to forgive you later, drugging and raping 13-yr old girls is A-Ok with the folks in Hollywood.

When the came for the paedophile sodomizers, I said nothing because I only sodomized adults.

When they came for the prescription drug abusers I said nothing, because I had a doctor who got me everything legally.

And when they came for me, there was nobody left, so I had to flee to Switzerland…

Mark Steyn, genocide apologist:

I’ll merely note the manner in which Steyn dismisses the possibility of mass genocide of Muslims in Europe as a final solution to the Islamist problem. It “won’t accomplish much.” And America would be “changed beyond recognition.” More than it was by dropping nukes on Japan? More than by authorizing torture and indefinitely suspending habeas corpus? Nah - Steyn is fine with all that. But he draws the line at a mass genocide of Muslims. Why? It might hurt us and “won’t accomplish much.” Damn.

In the end, that’s what everyone wants: a little fucking affection, dammit!

Is that so hard for people to understand?

That seems like a place we can make progress from. You should have no problem understanding the following either then :

Nobody wants an end to this drama more than me. But please, ask Bagua how he can possibly hope to have civil relations with someone he maintains is a psychopath and a sociopath? How can he possibly pretend to be the one seeking peace while doing that? Ask him why it is that he refuses to apologise to iceweasel and retract the disgusting slurs that he has repeatedly made against her?

His refusal to do that is what is stopping the possibility of peace here - it doesn’t take a genius to see that.

If he won’t retract, I guess the only other solution is avoidance. I’ve told him many times what he needs to do, and I’m still waiting. But the offer is still there.

Way OT: I just got back from a presentation by a corporate economist for a Fortune 500 company that I cannot name. He was presenting a series of scenarios based on bull, bear and consensus views of the US and world economies through 2015.

The highlights of the consensus view, which he thinks is what happens absent weird monetary policy (significant tightening) or some other unforeseen shock:

> 14 million new jobs created between now and end of 2014 (but that only gets the unemployment rate to 6.5%by 2014)
> Inflation and interest rates remain low throughout
> Federal deficit to decline from 10% of GDP to 7% by 2014 (driven by increased tax revenues from economic recovery and lapsing of Bush tax cuts)
> Personal savings rate increases to 5.2% by 2014

I wouldn’t have gotten any of this from reading the papers. There, all you get is doom and gloom.

At any rate, I thought you all might be interested. Most of the stuff we all get to read is from political economists with an ax to grind. This guy is a pro making predictions based on what his data and experience (and a model with 10,000+ equations for the US economy) and doing so to advise his employer, so he is pretty highly motivated to be right.

Unbelievable. The guy was accused of raping a 13 year old. Child rape. Statutory rape. And he fled the country rather than face justice in California. Finally, there was a chance that justice could be served in the US - both for the rape charges and for his fleeing of the country to avoid justice. Now, the Swiss have decided otherwise.

Nice.

Actually, he confessed in 1979. Just heard on NPR that he’d struck a plea with the DA and the Judge wouldn’t honor it, which is why he ran. Switzerland is saying that the details over sentencing weren’t released, so they’re deeming him a free man. Not that I agree with it, mind you.

MSM does a lousy job of reporting on any complicated issue, particularly when they try to speak for the experts, and try to interpret what has been said (rather than reporting what was said).

Plus they usually need conflicting views to portray an issue, so you end up with two guys with axes to grind. Better to find the mainstream view and explain it, but then you don’t have conflict.

The court is not obligated to “honor” any deal if it believes it’s not in the inteterst of justice.

Exactly right. In every plea deal I have ever seen, the defendant is reminded that he has bargained for a prosecutor’s recommendation, and the judge is free to impose whatever sentence he or she sees fit, within the confines of the law. And then he has to say that he understands that, on the record.

There’s a paragraph on a slug taken from a soldier’s knee that didn’t come from an Israeli gun, though, so that should negate any mistakes the commandos made in the eyes of many.

The Israelis take their military ops quite seriously. In fact, it’s when the reports aren’t sufficiently harsh that the public in Israel and the military raise hackles. They want to know what went wrong so they can avoid the mistakes in the future.

Each one of these kinds of ops is a teaching scenario for future commandos. It goes to the ethos of the Israeli military and how they have to be on top of things all the time.

Deal speculation drives BP shares further off lows

Speculation that BP will be sold in parts or a whole gave a further lift to the embattled oil giant’s shares Monday as the company said that the cost of cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill reached $3.5 billion.
….
Meanwhile, the U.K. government has hinted it may allow a bid for BP.

“As I understand, there is no immediate takeover planned. In the event that there was [an attempt] the areas where the government [can step in] are very narrow unless it is a matter of national security,” said Business Secretary Vince Cable to the U.K. daily, CityAM. “BP is a strong company with a strong cash flow. If there was a takeover attempt, we would look at it but our powers are restricted.”

The asset sale speculation comes as BP said the cost of the response to the oil escape has reached $3.5 billion. That tab includes the cost of the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to the Gulf states, claims paid, and federal costs.

Analysts have said the final BP tab could be as much as $70 billion.

I don’t understand the stakes that some writers and bloggers play at; they seem to regard everything as an apocalyptic confrontation, meaning that even obvious violations of taboos— revealing a private email to do something other than correct a falsehood, calling for violence against other people, accusations of traitorous intent— seems to be acceptable.

It’s baffling, as baffling as the stalker blog or any other sort of obsession. Hyperbole rules the day, and those who are unwilling to engage in it are usually demonized for that very reason.

Anne Frank’s Biography Published as Graphic Novel

A graphic novel version of Anne Frank’s biography was released in the Netherlands.

The 160-page book, launched last Friday, uses text and illustrations to tell Anne’s story and make connections between her life and historical events during the period.

According to Anne Frank House Museum spokeswoman Annemarie Bekker, the Amsterdam museum wants to use the book to make Anne’s story more available to teenagers from age 14.

“Not everyone has read Anne Frank’s diary,” she said in a statement to CNN. “The mission of the museum is to make the life story of Anne Frank accessible to as large an audience as possible, especially the younger generations.”

The biography was written by Sid Jacobson and illustrated by Ernest Colon, both Americans. They also co-created the best-selling graphic novel “The 9/11 Commission Report.”

Publisher Hill & Wang plans to release the book in the United States later this month and in Britain in the fall, with translations in German, Italian and French also planned.

Hezbollah Has List Of Israeli Targets - Report

A senior Hezbollah official said Sunday he has a list of Israeli targets to hit in the event of a war, The Associated Press reported.

Hezbollah commander Nabil Quaouk said the Lebanese Shia movement was on “high alert,” following Israel’s recent release of maps and aerial photographs allegedly revealing Hezbollah’s expanding presence in southern Lebanon.

“Let the Israeli leaders know that the Resistance also has a bank of targets” the Lebanese news site Ya Libnan quoted Quaouk as saying.

Israel’s declassification of information which apparently shows Hezbollah’s military capabilities to attack Israel fueled speculation that the government is trying to garner public support for a future war.

The Jerusalem Post, an English-language Israeli newspaper, reported Wednesday that the Israeli military views Hezbollah’s potential to infiltrate Israel as “the primary threat.”

In a recent report obtained by French news wire Agence France-Presse, UN chief Ban Ki-Moon warned that “a resumption of hostilities” between Israel and Lebanon could lead to a “devastating” war, following Israel’s April allegations of a Syrian arms transfers to the movement.

Hizbullah’s list of targets is pretty much the same as it’s always been. Try to hit major population centers inside Israel with as many casualties as possible. Hit major infrastructure and the more Israelis who die, the better. That’s the same as it’s always been.

Right now, they’re posturing because they’ve been exposed once again regrouping and rearming, just as critics have been warning for years. Israel is within its sovereign rights to defend itself from Hizbullah, and if Hizbullah tries something - it could be considered a state-act of war, since Hizbullah is party of and to the Lebanese government. Far from being a moderating effect on Hizbullah, the terrorist group will pull the rest of the country into yet another devastating war.

I dunno, Ice. I came in and noticed the deleted posts, was able to glean something from quotes within other posts.

What I see, sometimes — and, of course, feel free to attach whatever weight you believe my observation might have — is what I consider a sometimes surprising willingness to NOT leap to the troll conclusion right away. Bear in mind, my opinion is based on less than a year’s steady observation here. My own shit detector and lack of patience for idiots, particularly aggressive ones, leads me to leap to that conclusion the minute I see a configuration of words that has that particular trollaraoma. Depending on the specific nature of the comment, I’ll often downding reflexively; if things go south, I’ll report.

I find there to be a perhaps less-than-justified willingness to accept these folks at face value at first, which is in general an admirable trait. But I also suspect there might be some who extend the friendly hand in the “give ‘em enough rope” philosophy, to get them to expose the ugliest part of their body. (FZ reference.)

Most times, though, the Negatives have been excised by the time I start reading.

Gosh. No wonder I stopped reading comments on news stories.

I’m liking Google Chrome’s feature that automatically offers to translate a page that happens to be displayed in some other common language than English. The language list is fairly long. This helps broaden sources of both news and commentary.

and need we add that if all these companies just abeyed the law, there would no longer be any reason for these prople to come here seeking work?

just like adding that without drug users, the drug smugglers would have to find other markets

Hmmm

Just like saying that if food companies produced only healthy, low-calorie snacks at prohibitively high prices, then lard-butt, orally-fixated couch potatoes like me would not be so overweight?

‘Draw Muhammad’ artist placed on execution hit list; her online sites disappear

A radical Islamic leader has placed Molly Norris — the artist who helped spawn the recent “Everybody Draw Mohammad Day!” before distancing herself from the campaign — on an execution hit list, according to the New York Daily News.

FBI officials alerted Norris to what they are treating as a “very serious threat,” according to the report.

The Islamic leader is Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, a New Mexico-born 39-year-old who has been called arguably the highest-profile English-speaking supporter of violent jihad. Awlaki has been linked to the recent Times Square bombing attempt and reportedly inspired Texas’s Fort Hood massacre.

Awlaki reportedly says that Norris is a “prime target” for execution and that her “proper abode is hellfire.”

Nobody is forcing those companies to hire illegal aliens, except the fact that they are under fierce competition from other companies who do…

And who pay bribes to local officials to turn a blind eye and send contributions to politicians to make sure they undertake no serious measures to curb illegal immigration…

Evidently I agree with your feelings about companies and hiring of illegals aliens.

Anyone who has thier lawn mowed by an illegal, eats the lettuce picked, has thier bags carried, gets in the taxi, dishes washed, walls painted, block layed, stucco applied…the list is incredibly long. If citizens turn a blind eye to the problem, the politicians will too.

IRAN: Judiciary official says woman to be stoned for husband’s murder, not just adultery

In a surprise announcement, a judiciary official in provincial Iran said a woman who had been convicted and sentenced to stoning for adultery had also been convicted of murder.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two in the Tabriz area, had been convicted of cheating on her late husband, apparently a murder victim, and sentenced to die by stoning, a ruling that is officially under review, according to Iranian judiciary officials.

But on Sunday, Malek Ejdar Sharifi, head of East Azerbaijan Province’s judiciary, told the official Islamic Republic News Agency (in Persian): “Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has not been convicted of illicit sex only,” he said. “”She has been found guilty of numerous and extremely heavy offenses. She was sentenced to capital punishment [in 2006] in the criminal court in Tabriz, the center of the province, for committing murder, manslaughter and adultery.”

That’s fresh news. Up until Sharifi’s comments, Iranian officials and her lawyer said she was only convicted of adultery. Her lawyer, Mohammad Mostafai, said his client had been convicted of having a hand in her husband’s death but that the charge played no role in the death sentence against her, especially since her children did not want to pursue the murder charge against their mother. She was handed a 10-year sentence for the murder, her lawyer said.

“In the first place, the allegation was murder,” the lawyer told Babylon & Beyond. “She was accused of killing her husband, but as her children forgave her … she was pardoned and there was no more allegation against her. But to complicate the case, the court raised the issue of adultery.”

Sharifi declined to outline Ashtiani’s role in her husband’s death, saying it would be just too darn shocking for the public.

Forget Chuck Norris facts, here’s Dick Cheney facts.

/also g’devening.

After turning down an offer from Mafia Don, Cheney woke up with a horse head in his bed. He grabbed it, held it like a teddy bear, and went back to sleep.

Dick Cheney periodically goads Germany to invade Poland to prevent Europe from “going all sissy”.

Dick Cheney once killed a man with a paper clip. It took him three years, but eventually the man succumed to his wounds. He’s patient and evil, like a crocodile armed with a paper clip.

Dick Cheney used to write childrens’ stories under the pen name “H.P. Lovecraft.”

Cheney was shocked to find out that most people considered Sauron to be the bad guy in “The Lord Of The Rings” novels.

Awesomeness!

Bribes are wholly unnecessary. All that an employer needs to establish hiring eligibility is a drivers license for ID. Dime a dozen. Ask Atta.

This is the travesty of it all and no one will tighten up on ID’s, at least not the libs.

There was a case several years back in Texas.
A karate instructor kidnapped a boy and went on a several state travel run and molested the boy during his run.

Ellie Nessler did the same in California. Walked into the courtroom and shot the guy who raped her son.

My mother’s suggestion for sentencing was a hundred hours of community service.

We can’t let the law work like that, but it’s damn hard to condemn the killer in such a case.

Exactly, but what happens when you’re wrong:

Fairfield police have concluded that a 2-year-old girl was not molested by a neighbor her outraged father is accused of stabbing to death, a police official told The Associated Press Thursday.

Jonathon Edington, a 29-year-old attorney from Fairfield, is charged with killing Barry James on Aug. 28 after his wife told him of the abuse allegation, police said. Edington pleaded not guilty to the charge last week.

“We’re confident this 2-year-old was not molested,” said Capt. Gary MacNamara. “We are confident in our investigation that Mr. Edington did in fact kill Mr. James. We are as confident in our investigation that Mr. James did not molest the Edingtons’ daughter.”

MacNamara would not provide further details, but he did confirm that investigators interviewed the girl.

MacNamara also would not comment on whether the girl’s mother would be charged.

There’s a reason we’re supposed to have a rule of law.

I dunno, Ice. I came in and noticed the deleted posts, was able to glean something from quotes within other posts.

Slap, there were a couple of now deleted comments which weren’t quoted, the second or fourth or so comments he made, which made it abundantly clear that the Matt Hedges guy was a troll, with a special love for saying nasty things to liberals.

When I mention how “people loved him”, I was referring to the now banned troll Matt Hedges. That’s the point of the Wingnut Wave remark. People who hate liberals here so much and so enjoy creating an unpleasant atmosphere on the overnight thread for liberals that they’ll frantically welcome someone like Matt Hedges, an obvious troll, sockpuppet, and hater, and cheer him on. Even when it’s more than obvious that the guy hates Charles too.

That’s all. I don’t want to discuss it any more if that’s alright, I found it all quite upsetting.

Not quite; the church that managed the cemetery rejected the epitaph, so it reads “I told you I was ill” in Gaelic instead.

Plus he’s featured in major outlets. You go to Pammy’s site or Spenser’s, there is no excuse for not knowing who and what you’re dealing with. Steyn, on the other hand:

Since then, he has written for a wide range of publications, including the Jerusalem Post, The Orange County Register, Chicago Sun-Times, National Review, The New York Sun, The Australian, Macleans, Irish Times, National Post, The Atlantic Monthly, Western Standard and New Criterion.

Steyn’s website “SteynOnline” provides special commentary and access to many of his columns and other published work. He occasionally posts to the National Review Online group blog, The Corner.

Not to even mention radio and TV. I would seriously like to see this dirtbag exposed. IMO he does more damage than the other two.

People like Steyn are not cultural leaders, they are cultural critics. Like many of his ilk he cashed in on the post-911 anti-Muslim hysteria. While there are valid criticisms of certain aspects of Muslim culture he does not effectively create any change and serves mainly to entertain the already convinced.

He will not get many converts within the North American community let alone within the Middle Eastern Muslim community. In fact his somewhat volatile rhetoric has the reverse effect and only serves to further alienate the two divergent communities.

In general, he also speaks from arrogance since he always portrays Muslims as being always wrongs while painting the west as being always right. I believe this is called hubris.
