When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands, flying through space with other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty.

Sharron Angle admits waterboarding is torture in a comment about Harry Reid:

"Why would you believe anything he puts on television?" said Angle, who's faced a barrage of negative TV ads since winning the June 8 primary. "This man has been waterboarding our economy."

After eight years of being told by Republicans waterboarding was simply a way to get good information from people, this could be construed (at least in their eyes) as a compliment.

Iranian Website: Khamenei Claims He Was Visited by Hidden Imam

In a speech to the Iranian leadership and foreign ambassadors, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said that the present world order, led by the West and the U.S., contravenes God's decrees and is consequently collapsing before our eyes. He said that one of the reasons for the collapse is the awakening of the Muslim world under Iran's leadership.

The Khandaniha website posted an audio address by a cleric from Ahvaz province, Mir Ahmad Reza Hajati, in which he claims that Khamenei told his associates that the Hidden Imam had appeared to him and promised to arrive during his term as Supreme Leader.

The mullahs have to vet and approve candidates for the office of President in Iran, which means that even between Mirhussin Mousavi and Ahmadinejad, both were approved candidates by the mullahs, but Ahmadinejad's faction got the backing and support to throw the election to Ahmadinejad despite evidence showing Mousavi won. And Ahmadinejad got the backing of Khamenei.

26 Year Old Woman Raped and Murdered by Basij Members for “Bad Hijab”

According to HRANA, Elnaz Babazadeh, a 26 year old woman was raped and murdered by Basij forces in the city of Tabriz (northwestern Iran) last week. According to the reports, Basij forces stopped Babazadeh in her car for not following the Iranian regime’s dress code. Elnaz resisted the forces and ignored orders given by the Basij forces.

Then the Basij forces who had initially stopped her jumped into her car and threatened her with a gun. Two other Basij members joined in and all together they beat and raped her. They murdered Babazadeh and dumped her body close to Emamiyeh cemetery.

After local investigation was conducted by HRANA members in Tabriz, it was confirmed at Babazadeh’s funeral that the person who killed her was the son of a high-ranking Revolutionary Guards member.

The intentions of the savage Basij members was to put a stop to the “improper” way women in society dressed. Basij members believe this is their duty to God.

The Hidden Imam must be so proud.

I can agree that religion is used by some for personal/political gain without being immersed on a personal level by an individual.

However, I think with Dinnerjacket, we have a historical path we can follow on his thoughts and actions. Start just with his time as Mayor of Tehran. What do his speeches always focus on? When addressing the U.N. - each time he goes into lengthy talks about his beliefs.

I think DJ and those ruling Iran are cut from a different cloth than most, and can not be taken lightly. And with Hezz, AQ, Taliban - this pot gets bigger. And which other Arab/Islamic countries might also become more militant? Turkey?

The Iranian government said it would send hundreds of clerics into Tehran's schools this autumn to fight Western influence and the appeal of the political opposition.

The move is seen as an attempt by the government to tighten its grip on the schools in the aftermath of last year's disputed presidential elections in which many young Iranians flocked to the opposition.

Mohammed Boniadi, the deputy director of the Tehran education department, said 1,000 clerics would descend on the schools of the capital to make students aware of "opposition plots and arrogance", a reference to the attitude of Western nations. He described the clerics as "officers" in an ideological war with the West.

SNIP

Authorities have repeatedly emphasised the need to battle the influence of Western media, opinions and culture. Mr Boniadi said that the Iranian education department had previously failed to "reform and renovate the thoughts" of students. "We have to take full advantage of this opportunity," he added.

6 dead in New Mexico workplace shooting spree

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- Police say 6 people are dead, including the gunman, after a shooting rampage at a solar and fiber optics manufacturer in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

CNN reports that authorities say the murders are part of a 'domestic incident' on the campus of Emcore Corporation. The shooter was a former employee, and his wife reportedly still worked at Emcore.

There is no word on whether one of the five victims is the gunman's wife.

Some nearby businesses were put on lockdown as police searched for the gunman, and officers warned residents who live in the area to stay inside their homes. Police closed roads around Emcore, which is near Sandia National Laboratories on the city's southeast side.

Now that the threat is over attention will turn to the suspect, and why he carried out the massacre.

6 Dead, Including Gunman, in New Mexico Office Shooting

Six people are dead after a gunman opened fire at a New Mexico solar and fiber optics manufacturer.

Authorities released few details of the shootings on the campus of Emcore Corp., but said that six people were killed, including the gunman who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Four others were hospitalized.

Officers responded to the scene after receiving a call about the shootings at approximately 9:26 a.m. local time, police said.

The gunman, 37, was a former employee and is married to one of the victims, police said.

What an asshole. Too bad he shot himself last.

I think a lot of people thought Hitler was crazy. Some of them discounted him as a serious threat.

Please note, when I say that I think Dinnerjacket and handlers are sane as bread, I don't mean that I don't think they're dangerous. Quite the opposite.

I would never discount your opinion - in fact, we agree on most accounts and subjects.

When we differ, it's only in degrees.

6 Dead, Including Gunman, in New Mexico Office Shooting

What an asshole. Too bad he shot himself last.

I have some advice for any depressed narcissists who are planning such a dramatic exit: Get the chronology of the script right. Shoot yourself BEFORE you go on the rampage. We'll be much more impressed. Honest. Sure we will.

I once knew a man who did a lot of work with domestic violence. He had the same perspective--"We'd save a lot of lives if these guys, you know, the ones that shoot their wives, the kids and themselves...if we could get them to start with themselves...screw all these programs where we teach them about anger management. Just shoot yourself first, guys!"

He usually came out with this after a few drinks.

re: #62 Ericus58

I'm sure that back in the 30's, no one thought Hitler was crazy or suicidal either.

I have a 1938 poli sci text on The Governments of Europe. While not completely blind to some of the crazy things Hitler et al said, the authors conclude that the German government was a rational actor which wouldn't dare disturb the European status quo over that rhetorical Lebensraum thing. Guess they needed a new edition on that a year later.

Khamenei --- he is more calculating than Ahmadinejad, less demonstrably insane, and also more in control of the government. So in a way it is more, not less, scary when El Supremo starts talking crazy Hidden-Imam-Coming-Soon stuff. You bet, he's calculating a personal advantage from that. I can't see that as being good.

If we are "lucky" Khamenei is just going to use this to clamp down on the doubters at home. Iranian kids are getting classes on how to spot the tricks of the "Opposition". 1000 clerics have been sent in to Iranian classrooms as officers in an ideological war.

According to Mohammad Boniadi, deputy director of Tehran’s Education Department, the clerics will be assigned the duty of introducing the students to "opposition plots" and "arrogance," in reference to the reformist movement that started in the aftermath of the June 2009 presidential elections and the attitude of Western nations towards the Islamic republic, respectively.

Boniadi was also quoted as saying that those clerics are considered "officers" in an ideological war.

The Education Department, Boniadi added, had not been able to "reform" and "renovate" the thoughts and mentality of Iranian students and has now been awarded the opportunity to do so at last.

"We have to take full advantage of this opportunity," he said.

Yeah, although I need to start doing lesson planning and such. Tomorrow I get my new work laptop. (I don't mean that the laptop is new, I think the laptop is probably a hundred and seven. I mean that it's new to me.)

Right now, I need to get my butt in gear, go to the gym, and work off some of the winter blahs that have settled on my hips. So far, I've avoided that this morning by drinking coffee and making phone calls.

Sometimes a nutjob is only a nutjob.

But a nutjob with an action figure is even better!

Yeah, like this guy:

Okay, not a really a nutjob, but he plays some pretty wacky characters.

These clowns suffer from nothing more than homicidal egotism. Their little feelings are so important they can destroy innocent lives just to express them.
I would have advised the Austin suicide pilot to pick some target even bigger and more important than the little IRS building; the ocean, for instance. It would have made a bigger splash for sure, and that is what the self-important fool wanted.

That reminds me - I recently saw a kid at a Target (maybe 10-11 years old) buying a new version of Rockem Sockem Robots. Pretty cool that they're making those again.

Ha, I know the feeling on having to get into gear! Good luck!
Since my wife is still out of work in her field, she has been really getting the homestead shipshape. Latest project is pressure washing the front and back decks for staining. Her energy is infectious.... actually, I feel guilty if I don't join in ;)

OK, Mel is now out of the DVD collection for good.

"Don't you dare hang up on me! If you hang up, I'm coming over there," Gibson rants. Grigorieva threatens to call the police, to which Gibson replies, "You f---ing c---. You're in my house. I don't involve the police in anything because I stand up for myself."

Grigorieva goes on to explain that she is trying to protect their daughter, who she was holding when Gibson allegedly punched Grigorieva in the face.

"You were hitting a woman with a child in her hands? What kind of a man is that? Breaking her teeth twice in the face! What kind of man is that?" she asks in recording.

Gibson begins to taunt her, saying, "Oh, you're all angry now! You know what, you f---ing deserved it!"

He retaliates to a perceived threat from Grigorieva with of his own: "I'll put you in a f---ing rose garden you c--t! You understand that? Because I'm capable of it. You understand that?"

They did a bit on Red Eye last week where they played that audio over footage from Gibson's first movie, Tim. He plays a mentally challenged young man in that movie.

Hi, SFZ -

In reference to your SIL's woodpecker, here's a link which should normally provide any info she needs, on the condition of registering for the forum (easy, and no spam) and then posting her question(s) in the "Non-Pigeon and Dove Emergencies" sub-forrum, which you'll see by scrolling down the page. In the past, I found this community extremely reactive and knowledgeable - always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone, no matter what kind of bird they were querying about. I haven't been there in over a year, but I presume that things are pretty much the same.

[Link: www.pigeons.biz...]

In the meantime, and if you or your SIL desire, I'll check through my own contacts to see if I know anyone in or near San Francisco who might be able to offer additional help if necessary. Keep in touch if you feel that I can be of whatever help with this!

A great case history on how to ruin your career and lose the respect of just about everyone except your dog. And that's only because you feed him.

Ask Roman how that worked out for him... wait, wha?

This sounds like the clerics are adopting some of the tactics that Mao used --useful idiot child political soldiers --to deal with their opposition. Not good.
