Motor City Comics #1, April 1969

Arts • Views: 15,650

Tonight’s image from the Lizard Collection is the R. Crumb classic Motor City Comics, the first printing of issue #1, published in April 1969, featuring Boingy Baxter (a gangster with springs in his shoes) and the devastating Lenore Goldberg and Her Girl Commandos. This book is an R. Crumb creation from front to back.

The back cover is a hilarious send-up of Marxist rhetoric. (Crumb isn’t really a leftist; he’s just weird.)

I was just flicking between the cable news channels and Beck was on promoting his Restoring Honor manifesto to be delivered at the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of the MLK "I have a dream speech". What was interesting to me is he seems to have replaced the Color of Change, and later ACORN, with the Black Panthers as the embodiment of the left, and his personal nemesis. He promotes them through back and forth clip wars, digging up nutty quotes, putting them in many of his chalk board conspiracy lists, and generally painting them as a powerful, menacing leftist force that needs to be guarded against, instead of the marginalized, politically powerless group that they are.

I remember after the election he used to happily have them on his show as kind of a psst-nudge-wink-"this is the left and America under Obama" segment, but now he uses them as an opposing force to rally and inflame his viewership.

BP Oil Leak Endgame update:

Here is what the Oilcano looks like today. This picture is of the leak now issuing from the top of the Transition Spool. Notice the nipple which will allow the Sealing Stack Cap to make a sealed connection. Looks like a typical male quick release fitting on a hose.

The Oilcano today.

MARXISM!!111

Image: groucho_marx.jpg

The final volumes of Harry Turtledove's Timeline 191 alternate history series are set in the 1930s and 40s of a universe that diverges from ours when the Confederacy wins the Civil War. The cultural detail includes a popular comedy troup called the Engels Brothers.

*Spoilers*

Lubbock catches a lot of hell in the series too. It is the capital of the Union state of Houston, made up of western areas of Texas separated from Confederate Texas after the First World War. Unfortunately, it remains infested with Confederate agitators and sympathizers. At one point, in the mid-30s, there is a major uprising and an alternate General MacArthur rolls tanks down Broadway and has them use canister shot to disperse Confederate rioters in McKenzie Park. Later, the Army Air Corps firebombs downtown Lubbock from its biplanes to flush out still more Confederate subversives. Turtledove's account has many accurate details of Lubbock in the 30s, things only a few locals would know. I wonder, though, if someone here pissed him off when he was here to do research for the series.

The Sealing Stack Cap is about 40 feet away and closing in. It is lowered on Drill Pipe off course. So every 135 feet they need to connect another section of Drill Pipe to the one below using a tool joint, (that is the heavy joint that the BOP may have failed to chop through)

The ship servicing this top kill has two towers, so it was able to put down the Flange Removal tool and use the other tower to lower the new Sealing Stack Cap at the same time at the other tower surfaces the Flange Removal tool. Pull it up 135 feet, uncouple the pipe, and pull it up again.

21 darthstar  Mon, Jul 12, 2010 3:33:06pm

If ever there was a time to "go jump in a lake" that time would be now...if the lake was Lake Superior

Lake Superior 20 degrees warmer than normal

In the spring, the sun warms the water fairly uniformly as deep and shallow water mix. Once it reaches about 39 degrees, however, the behavior of the water changes and warmer water starts to form a layer floating on the colder water below. The process, known as lake turnover, usually happens in mid-July on Lake Superior, but this year it happened in early to mid-June instead.

Watching now...that's some picture, the unrestricted oil gushing...I wonder what the flow-rate of that is. But capping it is far more important than knowing how much oil is coming out.

Remember when some nuts wanted to Nuke the Well Head?

Lol. That was hilarious. One very possible result of using explosives to try to collapse the well bore formation would be a fracture of the formation leading to numerous uncontrollable leaks to the surface. Basically, the entire reservoir would empty into the Gulf with no hope of containment or bottom kill.

It is estimated at 100 million barrels, but more likely it is a big find, closer to 1 billion barrels. That is between 4 billion and 42 billion gallons.

The Sealing Stack Cap will give us an accurate measure of the flow rate. Once all the lines are collecting 100% of the flow, there is the flow rate.

Also, I believe the Sealing Stack Cap has an ability to measure the flow while it is free flowing, but I have no detail on this.

Don't worry, I'll be posting a video. BTW, that is methanol venting from the bottom of the 3-ram cap.

It's pretty impressive...looks like they're blowing hot water out the bottom of the cap before sliding it on.

/Arugg! sounds manly to me!

89 Bagua  Mon, Jul 12, 2010 4:17:00pm

This should snap on pretty easy, despite being controlled from a ship a mile above and hanging on a drill pipe. This hydraulic nipple fitting is much easier than the Transition Spool which had to mate to a flange.

But, the 3-ram cap is many times the weight of the Transition Spool.

Touchdown?

96 Bagua  Mon, Jul 12, 2010 4:20:30pm

Bingo, the 3-Ram Cap is mounted. Now they activate the hydraulic seal. All the oil and gas is now venting through the 3-Ram Cap. This is a major leap forward.

They have successfully hot stabbed another BOP!

re: #6 HoosierHoops

Well these are open threads right?
What I learned today shocked and horrified me...I found out today that you can only buy 3.2 beer in Oklahoma.. Period..
You have to drive to Texas to buy real beer...I am crushed..
/So plan is to go to Texas..Steal a Semi-Truck full of Bud Light.. Drive it up to Oklahoma.. Dump the Beer at the house.. Drive the rig up to Detroit and dump it on 8 mile...Take a taxi to the Airport..Fly back to Texas and pick up my car and drive back to Oklahoma...Do you guys think I have a prayer in Hell?
/

I personally don't care for beer (except ice cold and at the lake) but I believe beer over 3.2 is available at all the liquor stores. At least when we have a party that's were we buy it. The roads to Dallas are crowded but not as much as it would be if everyone went to get beer. Don't worry Oklahoma loves beer.

117 Bagua  Mon, Jul 12, 2010 4:29:15pm

This is big.

They can capture 100% of the oil and gas to surface ships

or

They can hook up to a subsea system nearby to capture 100% during storms.

or

They can close the Rams and shut off the leak for the first time

or

They can use the rams to help the bottom kill when the relief wells hit.

Not permanent.
They need to place a permanent seal, which probably is actually a series of 3 or so, I believe.

The live feed is showing no leaking oil.. Amazing so far..But I can't tell where the dang camera is pointed....

129 Bagua  Mon, Jul 12, 2010 4:35:59pm

re: #119 garhighway

Why wouldn't they just close the rams and shut it off?

They can do that now. It is risky because the pressure build up could rupture the BOP below, or more likely, the Well Head or some part of the well down hole. This would be a disaster. A much larger and completely uncontrollable leak.

They will choke it down in stages, monitor the pressure, look for problems, in increments. No sense risking a complete shut off is the oil is being collected.

It is looking at the seal the 3-Ram Cap just made. Looking for leaks. All of the oil and gas is now freeflowing out the top of the 3-Ram Cap which is not visibly now.
