When the Stranger says: “What is the meaning of this city?
Do you huddle close together because you love each other?”
What will you answer? “We all dwell together
To make money from each other”? or “This is a community”?

Wheeee! Eliot and a sweet new thread!

We huddle closer for the warmth. Some of us find love. Many of us find companionship, and friendship, and a place to talk with friends.
At least that is what I have found on LGF, and I thank Charles for it.
And the posters not named above. You know who you are.

OK, I’m the fool who read Sarah Palin’s recent tweets and glanced at her facebook post:

The Charge of Racism: It’s Time to Bury the Divisive Politics of the Past

Like she has a clue. Her whole schtick is about painting Obama as the “bad man” from her McCain campaign speeches (‘paling around with terrorists) to the Politifact lie of the year - Death Panels. To today when she pimps Megyn Kelly and her Black Panther racist fear baiting.

Beyond disgust.

Palin is all about the politics of personal grievance, and the personal is political for her in a way never envisioned by those who invented and use that slogan (that would be feminists).
Everything’s personal for Palin. I firmly believe that Obama is a ‘bad man’ to her because her wittle feelings were hurt when she didn’t get to be VP.
Actually, Palin is all about petty vindictiveness and spite— and opportunism— in her prior ‘political’ career. Now she has a national platform for it.

WTF!? I can’t be serious tonight! I don’t even have much time to hang out, wanted to say hi.

Woot woot!

An Eliot thread.

Here’s my favorite poem by the Old Possum:

LINES FOR AN OLD MAN

The tiger in the tiger pit
is not more irritable than I.
The whipping tail is not more still
Than when I smell the enemy
Writhing in the essential blood
Or dangling from the friendly tree.
When I lay bare the tooth of wit
The hissing over the arche’d tongue
Is more affectionate than hate,
More bitter than the love of youth,
And inaccessible by the young.
Reflected from my golden eye
The dullard knows that he is mad.
Tell me if I am not glad!

Hey! No prob. No, the general situation with a spousal visa is you get a settlement visa, which means 2 years permission to live there and you’re more or less automatically upgraded to a LTR visa after 2 years: “permanent leave to remain”.

I haven’t thought about getting citizenship there. I don’t need to. It’s an easy process for a US citizen with the LTR visa at that point, though. I might just for the heck of it.
In any case I retain US citizenship no matter what.

HEY WINGNUTS! I COULD BE VOTING LEFTY IN TWO COUNTRIES QUITE SOON!/

Yup! I mean Yurp! Been before, lived there before — so many places I havent been to though! R

eally need to sort stuff out. Jimmah and I had originally talked about doing a 2 or 3 month trip, then this all took way longer than we expected (and cost way more). So, we’ll see. Travel is most definitely on the menu though!

Lustig, lustig, ihr lieben Brüder,

Denn unser Handwerk, das ist verdorben,

Es lebet keiner mehr als ich und du.

Translation:

Let’s all be merry, my dear brothers,

And drink a glass of Champagne wine!

For our trade is gone and ruined,
the best tipplers are all dead,

Song of American Exceptionalism

Oh, Americkay it is the crack -
on that all men agree.
Magyars would rather die in Nyack
Than thrive in Hungary.

The Poles would all give up Krakow
to work for squat in Boise,
and Germans do without their Bräu
if they could sweat in Joisey.

The Thais would quit their beaches
and sail here in small boats
and work as waiters, bustin’ breaches,
while th’ almighty dollar bloats.

The far Cathayans, man for man,
come full of believage,
To watch on cable, while they can
Lilo’s amazing cleavage.

Yes, Americkay is many things,
but mostly full of shit.
If you believe all folks want in,
You’ve ne’er seen the world, you twit.

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of To Kill a Mockingbird, I offer this book review by resident sage, Homer Simpson:

One of my favoritest stories… kind of goes well with the thread…

One day an old man was rocking on his porch when a moving van drove up. The driver asked, “What kind of people live in this town?”

“Well,” the old man replied, “What kind of people live where you came from?” The driver responded, “They were the meanest, most unfriendly people you’ve ever heard of!” The old man sighed, “Drive on, because the same kind of people live here.”

The next day another moving van drove by and the driver asked the same question, “What kind of people live in this town?” “Well,” the old man asked, “What kind of people live where you came from?” The driver responded, “They were the kindest, friendliest people you’ve ever seen!” The old man smiled, “You’ll love it here, because the same kind of people live here too!”

Serial Butt-Biting GOP Operative Sinks Teeth Into Texas Race
[Link: motherjones.com…]

Meet Charles Hurth III. The Missouri lawyer has a long history of setting up under-the-radar groups to help Republican operatives game elections. But the most sordid thing about Hurth’s past is not his political scheming. He’s also what you might call a serial butt-biter, with a well-publicized track record of sinking his teeth into the rumps of college coeds. He recently struck again in Texas—not by biting derrieres, but by spearheading an apparent GOP dirty trick to derail a Democrat’s gubernatorial bid.

I think “college co-ed butt biter” would look great on a resume.

The Libyan aid ship Amalthea bound for Gaza has apparently changed course for Egypt’s El Arish port, after seeking and receiving permission to do so.

At one point last night, a number of bloggers who were using the marine traffic site (the same one I posted yesterday) noted the ship’s GPS tracking had been turned off. This caused some concern, especially after the following video surfaced on the Mere Rhetoric blog.

Summers can be very hot in fits and starts - except on the North and West coasts. A ten-day heat wave has just broken with rain and cooler temps. AC is rare, but people are beginning to buy portable floor units. Except for public places (malls, offices, etc.), I personally prefer to live without. I’ve got an industrial-strength chrome floor fan that keeps me cool at night and I manage quite well that way. All in all, summers are great here!

I still shudder to think about the rope swing we put up a mile into the woods at the far end of the pond. No adults knew about it, and if we ever had needed rescue, there would have been no chance. then there was the pooch propelled bike races.. the neighborhood kids tied their respective pooches to bikes, skateboards or red wagons and we had races that the dogs were not happy with. Always ended up in a bloody, human tangle of ropes, hats, shoes and fur, with several pissed off pooches!

The West is Brittany, which is maritime par excellence. As you proceed south down the coast towards Spain, the climate begins to resemble SoCal more than Northern California or points North. You can find just about every time of temperate climate imaginable in France - no real extremes. It’s really propitious to pleasure and good living….

At that level of commerce and politics, the line between government and corporation is hardly distinguishable.

Don’t forget that to this day, the major oil companies get together in the White House to discuss national energy policy. And of course, since this is a national security issue, the deliberations are secret.

Which basically means that they are operating as a government-sponsored cartel.

LOL. The American West could contain France. There’s not much here that would qualify. A few high plateaus that might remind you of something or other, but every square inch of cultivatable land has been settled for thousands of years. They’ve done a lovely job of living intelligently with nature, which is why France is considered as having the most beautiful countryside in the world. SHE was only 14 when she was forced into marriage with an older man.

Yet within a year of her wedding, Azar Bagheri was charged with adultery and sentenced to be stoned to death.

The sentence could not be carried out until she was 18. So for the past four years, Ms Bagheri has been languishing on death row while the courts waited for her to reach maturity so she could be put to death.

According to Iranian human rights activist Mina Ahadi, Ms Bagheri was denounced by her husband, who accused her of committing adultery with two men.

Ms Ahadi said the teenager had been subjected to two mock stonings. On each occasion she was taken out of her cell and buried up to her shoulders in the yard of Tabriz prison, in northwest Iran, as if being prepared to be pelted to death with stones.

SNIP

Stoning is intended to cause a slow and painful death. Iran’s penal code states: “The size of the stone … shall not be too large to kill the convict by one or two throws, and shall not be too small to be called a stone.”

It was pure heaven. Even the blood and fur. We even had the old time small town doctor, whose wife was my 3rd grade teacher. If we needed stitches, we got hauled off to his house into his office off of his kitchen. I could go on for hours about the fun we had year round in that neighborhood. It was called Lakewood Hills, lots of hills, and awesome sledding in the winter, also. It was a great place to be a kid.re: #134 MandyManners

I grew up in Brooklyn NYC, no air, and that’s why I found Burgundy so terribly hot… it was just like where I grew up.

Yes… that area is beautiful, but I found the Chamonix in the Haute-Savoie to be, in my opinion, the most beautiful place in France… but then again, I’m inclined to mountains and high terrain rather than rolling hills.

I like the cold better than the oppressive heat. We got t-storms last night, thought it was gonna cool us off, it just got worse to the point where having anything, sheets, pajamas, mattress touching you is torture. With the cold, you can always warm up pretty easily. Did I mention I hate air conditioning more than the heat? Under Iran’s penal code, adultery is the only crime punishable by stoning as an offence “against divine law”. The death sentence may also be imposed for murder, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking, but offenders are usually hanged.

Are adulterous men stoned, too? Or is that “divine law” bit applicable only to those with a uterus?

It sounds like you hit Burgundy at just the wrong time. How were the locals taking it? Was there a river or a pond for swimming? Of course the locals were fine… I suspect it was par for that time of year. I thought it was oppressive (didn’t ruin my time there, like I said, I grew up with that kind of heat)… but I’ve never visited in the summer since then (been there 6 times in 10 years).

From the mission statement of The Muslim Canadian Congress (emphasis mine):

We believe in the separation of religion and state in all matters of public policy. We feel such a separation is a necessary pre-requisite to building democratic societies, where religious, ethnic, and racial minorities are accepted as equal citizens enjoying full dignity and human rights enunciated in the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We oppose gender apartheid that is practiced in parts of our community, and believe it is contrary to the equity among men and women enshrined in Islam. We believe that Muslim men and women should work together, shoulder-to-shoulder, in their effort to rejuvenate our community.

They also opposed attempts to set up religious tribunals based on Sharia Law.

We’ve never experienced that problem here in California. My mom loved fur coats, and had a few of them…wore them mostly in the winter or when going to San Francisco for a weekend. My sister sometimes wears fur…usually up in Lake Tahoe and only in the winter. I do recall, when I was in college, people protesting fur, and a few news stories about paint throwing, and it had an effect on the industry. Most people just ignore people wearing fur…even when they object to it.

France’s lower house of parliament has voted to ban the wearing of face-covering veils in public places by 336 votes to one in the 557-seat assembly.

The bill, which has received overwhelming support in opinion polls, must now be ratified by the senate in September to become law.

The opposition Socialist party, who originally wanted the ban limited only to public buildings, boycotted Tuesday’s vote.

SNIP

Men who force their wives or daughters to wear the full veil face a fine of up to $37,754 and a one-year jail term, according to the draft legislation.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said earlier this year that the full veil “hurts the dignity of women and is not acceptable in French society”.

Growing up in Northern California (about 20 miles east of Redding), I’d ride my bike in 100+ heat to Sun Oaks Tennis Club (about 10 miles), play 4 or 5 sets of tennis with my buddy Chris, then bike home afterward. We’d get stretches of 8 or 10 days of 100+ heat (114 wasn’t unheard of), but we were kids. Set of tennis, splash in the pool, two more sets, splash in the pool, another set, pool, bike home, jump in the pool there.

Sorry Mandy… I don’t consider Denver area weather to be extreme at all, and that was sort of what we were talking about… oppressive, extreme, humid heat. Maybe I am being pedantic, but I don’t consider a handful over over 100 days since 1874 to fit the model of oppressive, extreme heat.

Like I say… sorry.

re: #198 darthstar

We’ve never experienced that problem here in California. My mom loved fur coats, and had a few of them…wore them mostly in the winter or when going to San Francisco for a weekend. My sister sometimes wears fur…usually up in Lake Tahoe and only in the winter. I do recall, when I was in college, people protesting fur, and a few news stories about paint throwing, and it had an effect on the industry. Most people just ignore people wearing fur…even when they object to it.

There were quite a few vocal assholes in the Denver area. I recall some instances in the ski resorts, too. I don’t know if there was any paint-flinging there.

I played stick ball, with my buddy Jeffery substituting for home base, using a wet wad of toilet paper in Brooklyn in 98 degree heat… 6 innings of stick ball… jump in an open sewer… roll a bum… wash off in Verrazanno Bay and then get home before Dad sobered up.

Heat does not have to have humidity for it to be extreme in my opinion. I consider mid-upper 90s in dry heat extreme. Also, there’s the compent of extreme colds, and I recall quite a few winters of what I call “extreme” with the temperatures in the low 20s, teens, single-digit and sub-zero.

I see all of that as being just about as successful as the war on drugs. I get the feeling that the media is playing this for all it’s worth. It sells papers and television and radio ad space and gives everyone the opportunity of polarizing around one position or another. I personally don’t see it as another indication of America going down the tubes as much as continual exercises in demagogy and appealing to the lowest common denominator in political debate. Sooner or later, people will be bloviating around some other issue - with just as much intelligent input as this one. It keeps people busy trying to think the issues through without having the necessary information and gives certain politicians the aura of actually dealing with something.

It’s ugly, and I’m not minimizing the demons it has awakened, but as is often the case, all I see is manipulation for purposes other than resolving the issue.

Correct, neither the incident itself nor the stopping of the flow are anything to put on the President.

I have some issues about the moratorium, which I believe is not necessary for the length of time they’ve declared it. All they really needed to do was stop issuing permits for the few weeks or month or two it would take to inspect the wells out there (which was done within the first week after the incident), and ensure operations were being handled safely.

What BP did to cause this thing was outside of every normal process, and those in the biz knew it right away. There’s been drilling in the Gulf for 60 years without an incident like this.

The panel put together to study this hasn’t even met yet. I expect the 6-month moratorium is going to drag out much longer than that, with really severe economic effects, locally at first, but spreading out.

I find it sort of odd that right now, the ONLY company with a permit to drill is - BP. pfffft.

I figured as much.

All I know is what I’ve read in English. I don’t know if I trust Al-Jazeera’s coverage:

The bill makes it illegal to cover the face anywhere in public and those caught wearing a full veil would face fines of $190 or be ordered to enrol in a “citizenship course”.

One of the newer housing developments outside of Reno (4 acre ranchettes) tried to get legislation passed because someone had a loud donkey. Fortunately, the idiot newcomers tried to get all farm animals banned - in an area full of farms - and failed.

Utah - turning the crazy knob up to 11

A list containing the names and personal information of 1,300 people an anonymous group contends are illegal immigrants has been mailed around Utah, terrifying the state’s Hispanic community.

Holy fuck…I missed this part while linking:

A letter accompanying the list demands that those on it be deported immediately.

Most of the names on the list are of Hispanic origin. The list also contains highly detailed personal information such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, workplaces, addresses and phone numbers. Names of children are included, along with due dates of pregnant women on the list.

I’m quite positive that this list was produced by right-wing radical conservative racists since a list like this, and the subsequent publicity that they would receive, would certainly propel the Utah immigrations law, to be voted on in January, right over the top, assuring a win.

re: #281 darthstar

The Salt Lake Tribune has more, and it appears that the focus is on several state agencies for the source of the information:

“If it reveals any kind of evidence of wrongdoing or release of private information we will turn it over to the Attorney General’s Office,” said Angie Welling, Herbert’s spokeswoman.

Utah law makes it a misdemeanor to disclose government data not meant for public dissemination, though there are protections for whistle blowers. The list included names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, and 31 social security numbers. Also included: the names and dates of birth of 201 children, and the due dates of six pregnant women. Almost every surname is Latino.

Frank Cordova, president of the group Central Civico Mexicano, said the release of the information is destructive to efforts to bring people together to reform immigration policy, “rather than trying to cut so many people’s throats and hurt them in the manner this is coming down.”

“I can’t even imagine being a brown person and being undocumented, and to find yourself on a list or on the other side [wondering] when someone is going to put you on a list if your name’s not there right now,” he said.

Among the agencies being scrutinized are the Utah Department of Workforce Services and Department of Health, which handle birth and death certificates and applications for Medicaid, food stamps and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. American-born children can qualify for some kinds of aid even if their parents are undocumented.

Charges should be filed against whoever is responsible, but watch for that person(s) to claim whistleblower status - that these individuals should not have received govt benefits because of their status as illegal aliens.

And yes, I think this list will have an effect on the immigration law debate before the legislature takes up the bill in January.

re: #301 garhighway

I have no idea what is going through your mind. That’s why I asked. Was asking bad? Was I in some way uncivil? I try to be civil.

I originally posted on the fact that the media and certain politicians were spinning this issue for all it’s worth, distorting information and making it almost impossible for anyone to have an informed opinion. I find this regrettable in a democracy, where having accurate information is necessary for making intelligent choices.

I no way implied that I have the solution to the immigration problem. If I thought I did, I’d be happy to let you know. It seemed to me that Walter suggested some basic moves that theoretically make sense. But once again, I’d be at a loss to say whether they constitute viable solutions or not. Maybe that’s why I never ran for office: I believe too much in the virtues of patience, rational discussion and allowing conflicting points of view to work out satisfactory (and ethical) compromises. A vote for me is a vote for prosperity, happiness and a strong nation. Thank you, and God bless you all!

re: #322 garhighway

Indeed. However, if the kids make it the business of the media by seeking attention (no one asked them to go take photos for the cover of a magazine), they are putting themselves out there as public figures whether we want or care or not. They could slink off never to be heard from - Alaska is a pretty big place last time I checked, and it’s even close to Russia too). They probably saw the $$$ from doing the photo shoot, and decided that money talks.

Thinking about that whole situation, the line from one of my favorite movies - Raising Arizona - comes to mind. I’m not gonna live this way, Hi! It just ain’t family life! … HI: Well… it ain’t “Ozzie and Harriet.”

november will be fascinating. but also a bit scary. i think the GOP will do well, but almost in spite of itself. They can’t possibly lose ground with the economy stuck in second gear. But if they use the election as some sort of mandate to go even more “hard” right, it will eventually screw them in 2012. Most people will give the GOP a chance, but they need to act responsibly and move to the center. The country benefits if they do. And if they don’t, the voters will punish them. In New England where I live, the Repubs are more centrist, which is why people up here will vote for them. Nationwide, I know that is not usually the case anymore. But the national GOP should get its people to emulate the (moderate) way the “yankees” get votes for the GOP.

On the one hand, I don’t agree with pundits and critics attacking them in lieu of their parents, and feel they should be off-limits except when they put themselves in public spotlight to help their parent’s careers. On the other hand, I don’t like the idea of politicians being able to use children as props and being shielded from criticism for doing so by accusing those critics of attacking their children.

Following an anti-Semitic attack in Hanover, German authorities have identified a new source of anti-Semitic hatred in Germany: young migrants from Muslim families. The ideological alliance has officials concerned.

It was supposed to be a carefree festival in Sahlkamp on the outskirts of the northern German city of Hanover. Billed as an “International Day” to celebrate social diversity and togetherness, the June celebration included performances by a multicultural children’s choir called “Happy Rainbow” and the German-Turkish rap duo 3-K. Music from Afghanistan was also on the program.

But then the mood suddenly shifted.

When Hajo Arnds, the organizer of the neighborhood festival, stepped onto the stage at about 6:45 p.m. to announce the next performance, by the Jewish dance group Chaverim, he was greeted with catcalls. “Jews out!” some of the roughly 30 young people standing in front of the stage began shouting. “Gone with the Jews!”

re: #354 _RememberTonyC

november will be fascinating. but also a bit scary. i think the GOP will do well, but almost in spite of itself.

My prediction is that the GOP will do well in November, but will not be taking the majority in either house of Congress, though they may succeed in doing so on the state and local levels, which is important with the coming redrawing of districts due to the census.

As to whether any gains made, no matter how moderate, will be seen as a “mandate” is something that will have to wait until after the election. If the Tea Party candidates get (rightfully) handed their asses, then perhaps the party will recognize that craziness and ODS is not the means by which to win big in 2012 and moderate the party’s platform. If they don’t, then I fear for the future of the Republic.

I grant you that. It’s shameful, and personally speaking, I don’t think it’s right to attack any family members of a politician/candidate unless they wilfully involve themselves in the campaign.

And even if they involve themselves in the campaign, who’s to say that it was out of obedience/loyalty to their parents or that they were a true volunteer? We can never know that. Better to take them for the dutiful family members that they are (if they are campaigning) and leave them be. Family members never move the needle in major campaigns anyway, so what’s the point?

Oh sure, you’ll get that too. Many folks, particularly partisans, have a hard time these days differentiating between “repudiation” and “mandate.” What seems to be the power behind the GOP bandwagon right now, more than anything, is an anti-incumbent, “throw the bastards out!” mentality. At the same time, as the wisdom goes, “all politics are local” and folks are not always gonna agree on which “bastards” need to go. But such a mentality acting itself out and leading to a major shift in Congress does not constitute a “mandate,” no matter how much the wingnuts amongst us will crow that it does.

There already is plenty of hatred targeted against gays and intellectuals; even here in the United States, unfortunately.

The question as to why Jews are picked on historically is more a matter of our success than our failure; there are lots of ethnic groups that have been wiped out, destroyed, or completely assimilated. They suffered fates worse than the Jews, in many ways; persecution was successful. Others have been reduced to a bare shred of previous existence, like the Native Americans, the Ainu— many of these groups live under the rule of their historical oppressor.

So to me it’s really not so strange that there’s hatred for the Jews; there’s always been ethnic strife, religious conflict, and Jews have always been the other. What’s been amazing is that we’ve managed to survive it.

Where oh where is William F. Buckley, the GOP needs you badly.

Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) is now a full blown birther.

Republican Sen. David Vitter told a group of supporters last week he is in favor of groups who may want to take President Obama to court over the belief he is not an American citizen.

“I personally don’t have standing to bring litigation to court,” he said at a recent town hall meeting in Metairie, Lousiana, which was caught on video. “But I support conservative legal organizations and others who would bring that to court.”

The Internet has been rampant with claims since 2008 that Obama is not a U.S. citizen, despite having produced a legal document showing his birth in Hawaii, as well as newspaper reports. Officials in Hawaii have verified his birth certificate exists, and several conservative pundits have brushed off “birther” claims as irrelevant.

Calling a legal motion a “valid and possibly effective” effort, Vitter quickly took a step back, suggesting that perhaps there were more important issues to address.

They aren’t irrelevant. They don’t have any facts to back up their claims. It’s wishful thinking supported by delusional thinking that they can overturn the results of the 2008 election. The media looked into the situation and found nothing to support any claims that Obama was born anywhere other than Hawaii. Despite the protestations of the Birthers, HI certifies that he was born in the state. That’s the facts.

This is yet more pandering to the fringe right - which seems to be ever more vocal about being the bulk of the GOP faithful these days.

Wealth and opportunity doesn’t seem to blunt the anger, but simply change the tools available. The poor lash out with violence and graffiti, the wealthy lash out with propaganda and political action. The wealthy even use the poor as a form of blunt tool, meant to act out and “eliminate” the object of their mutual hatred. Kurdistan, the homeland to more than 20 million Kurds, is a nation that exists only in the dreams of the Kurds, and in the long forgotten Treaty of Sevres, which divided up the Ottoman Empire, following World War I. The Kurds, inhabiting parts of Turkey, Iraq and Iran are the largest national group without a country. So why does the UN not demand statehood for THIS group? Under Iran’s penal code, adultery is the only crime punishable by stoning as an offence “against divine law”. The death sentence may also be imposed for murder, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking, but offenders are usually hanged.

Are adulterous men stoned, too? Or is that “divine law” bit applicable only to those with a uterus?

If the law parallels the Biblical understanding, adulterous men would also be stoned, but a man is only an ‘adulterer’ if he sleeps with a woman married to someone else, not if he steps out on his wife with a single person.

Not sure it’s the same in Islam.

You’re dreaming! The house is gone, gone, gone. The senate is still in play.
We need to get a pool going on around here.

How many millions of Kurds were slaughtered before they fled a continent to set up a nation of their own?

Um, lots of millions of Kurds have been slaughtered.

And Jews didn’t flee Israel, we were cast out of it by the Romans. Jews really don’t like to cast it in the light of us ‘fleeing’.

And there were quite a few expulsions before that, too, plus slavery, being conquered, etc.

One of the main differences, as I said, is that Jews who were expelled managed to hang together as a coherent group, so we’re still around.

To win the House, the GOP would have to take 80% of the seats up for grabs and keep all the seats in play that they’re sitting on “in the family.” I just don’t see it happening. They’ll pull the Democrats to within a handful of seats in both houses, but they won’t be taking a majority, short of divine intervention.

And if they were mainstream, educated, and wealthy, they’d still hate the Jews.

Look no further than the Queen of Jordan.
