Utah Investigating ‘Illegal Immigrant’ List

US News • Views: 3,695

Utah state officials are investigating a leak of personal information, after an anonymous conservative group circulated a list of 1,300 people they claim are illegal immigrants, including Social Security numbers and family members’ names and addresses.

The anonymous group mailed the list to several media outlets, law enforcement agencies and others this week, frightening the state’s Hispanic community. A letter accompanying the list demanded that those on it be deported immediately.

The list also contains highly detailed personal information such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, workplaces, addresses and phone numbers. Names of children are included, along with due dates of pregnant women on the list.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert wrote in a tweet Tuesday that he has asked state agencies to investigate the list’s origin.

note that the minute men think this list is great, so long as the names on it check out

2 MandyManners  Wed, Jul 14, 2010 2:22:58pm

Names need to be taken and asses need to be kicked over this. This is unconscienceable.

Now, this is what McCarthyism actually looks like, folks. In case you were wondering.

Because anonymous lists mailed to the media demanding action based on suspect information are exactly how the Founding Fathers envisioned we conduct ourselves when writing the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

As I said, it starts with marginalizing groups and attacking people in ways that they can not defend against. This is nothing more or less than thuggery and very little different than the forces that led to kistalnacht. Look plainly at what it is.

Anchor babies, coupled with the obvious threat that they are watching you.

Think about it, someone not only wants you out of this country but is writing people about your wife's pregnancy. An assault and a threat on a woman you must protect, while she is vulnerable, from the dark, made by thugs.

Like I keep saying, this is what unhinged fear, hatred and race bating brings. The people who made that list would likely cheer if some thug beat her until she miscarried.

Yes. I get it now. What utter assholes.

But how would they get that information? I assume they just made it up. I assume it's all bullshit.

Dear god, when pregnant women are the ones under attack-- even if they have come to the US with the express purpose of wanting their child to be an American citizen, even if that's their whole fucking plan, there is no time I will be comfortable with targeting a group of pregnant women for deportation. Ever.

I think you might be on to something.

If you make a request for public records, one item that is always kept confidential is the social security number. So if SSN's are showing on this list, it seems to me it would have to have come from someone in a position to have that information, which would be some sort of governmental agency.

I'm not liking where this train of thought is taking me.

So you are actually belittling this? I had thought that even your detestable trolling had limits. This is a direct threat and an invasive one from a shadowy enemy on pregnant families.

If you had a pregnant wife and someone, who clearly didn't like you, were posting her due date, what would you think?

You would get all mountain man and gun loving. But then again, much like when it comes to government health dollars, you are fine with thses things when it comes to covering you own hypocritical ass, but happy to screw others. I can't believe you are belittling this.

Yes. I am certain it is exactly like the people in the anti-abortion world who makes lists of MDs who perform abortions. I am saying that the entire point of such a list is intimidation,. If these thugs can o get the state to turn draconian, they can make these people afraid for their lives and move out. If a pregnant woman gets battered than so much the better for their cause, and of course that is what they want.

Here is a quote from one of the letters sent with a list...

In the April letter, the writers say their group "observes these individuals in our neighborhoods, driving on our streets, working in our stores, attending our schools and entering our public welfare buildings."

"We then spend the time and effort needed to gather information along with legal Mexican nationals who infiltrate their social networks and help us obtain the necessary information we need to add them to our list," the letter says."

No. It works in stages, with each step divorced from the next, so nobody feels directly responsible for the ultimate result. This is the banality of evil, on display.

The first step is whipping up a fear of the other as an abstract entity.
The second step is identifying the other on an individual level.

I had already read the comment thread over at Balloon-Juice on this one, because they've got some really good pointed thoughts I wish I'd thought of. One of the most disheartening things about this is seeing the comment thread on the yahoo article. I'm beginning to lose faith that the majority of Americans are good people. People are too easily swayed by fear and xenophobia, and a bad economy will cause people to overlook the xenophobia and racism that has poisoned the Republican party.

I'd call this a stunt, and dismiss it, but when you read studies that show that too many people are willing to ignore accurate information if it doesn't fit their worldview, you realize that it doesn't matter if something is a stunt, it helps solidify the worldview, and in this case the worldview is that there are too many nasty dirty illegals downloading babies and stealing from America. Just because the facts on the ground don't support this worldview does not matter, because facts no longer matter and America is a weaker country because of the continued use of fear which weakens reason and the resolve in America to do the right and reasonable things instead of reacting like scared children.

Where's the America I love?

re: #59 MandyManners

Yep.

I have created medical software and databases that are beholden to HIPAA regulations. There is even regulations on how data can be extracted, yet the agency receiving the extraction cannot be given any information that would allow them to "link" back to a fuller dataset of information. There is a chain of custody with the data, and the issuer of a certain set of data are the only entity that can reference that data back to the source. I deal with Kaiser data 4-5 times a year, and any extraction procedures I create, I must create them so only the department or entity that extracted the data can link it back. It's tricky programming some times, but necessary to privacy issues.

God, I'm going to have fucking nightmares now

Doomsday: How BP Gulf disaster may have triggered a 'world-killing' event

Northwestern University's Gregory Ryskin, a bio-chemical engineer, has a theory: The oceans periodically produce massive eruptions of explosive methane gas. He has documented the scientific evidence that such an event was directly responsible for the mass extinctions that occurred 55 million years ago. [4]

Many geologists concur: "The consequences of a methane-driven oceanic eruption for marine and terrestrial life are likely to be catastrophic. Figuratively speaking, the erupting region "boils over," ejecting a large amount of methane and other gases (e.g., CO2, H2S) into the atmosphere, and flooding large areas of land. Whereas pure methane is lighter than air, methane loaded with water droplets is much heavier, and thus spreads over the land, mixing with air in the process (and losing water as rain). The air-methane mixture is explosive at methane concentrations between 5% and 15%; as such mixtures form in different locations near the ground and are ignited by lightning, explosions and conflagrations destroy most of the terrestrial life, and also produce great amounts of smoke and of carbon dioxide..." [5]

The warning signs of an impending planetary catastrophe—of such great magnitude that the human mind has difficulty grasping it-would be the appearance of large fissures or rifts splitting open the ocean floor, a rise in the elevation of the seabed, and the massive venting of methane and other gases into the surrounding water.

Such occurrences can lead to the rupture of the methane bubble containment—it can then permit the methane to breach the subterranean depths and undergo an explosive decompression as it catapults into the Gulf waters. [6]

All three warning signs are documented to be occurring in the Gulf.

One question for the idiots who sent out this letter and "list".

You mention that you have Social Security numbers of 1300 "illegals".

Last time I checked, only citizens, permanent residents, and 205(c)(s) work visa recipients get an actual Social Security card. If you've just published the personal information of legal card holders, EACH name and associated number you've published is a felony.

107 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Wed, Jul 14, 2010 2:53:18pm
The list also contains highly detailed personal information such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, workplaces, addresses and phone numbers. Names of children are included, along with due dates of pregnant women on the list.

Un. Fucking. Believable. Disgusting.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert wrote in a tweet Tuesday that he has asked state agencies to investigate the list’s origin.

This is definitely a problem. However, I think that it is also a bit overstated here.

The amounts of methane coming up are a terrible thing on vastly many levels and there is certainly going to be a gigantic dead zone as a result of this.

A large methane blow though is unlikely to be of the magnitude that this article describes.

A cubic mile of air weighs about 20 million tons. An explosive concentration of methane over that volume would be about a million tons, with an explosive energy equal to about 8 million tons of TNT; equivalent to a seriously powerful H-bomb.
However, it is extremely unlikely that the release would be fast enough to achieve that dense a concentration over anything like that volume.

Never mind... the mark of a good entertainer is someone who can turn it on in an instant. You had your chance.

re: #26 Walter L. Newton

I'm confused by the origins of this nasty little list. The link to the graphic of the "memo" says "Concerned Citizens of the United States." Another link goes to the website of "Concerned Citizens of America" and the article and quotes above call the group "anonymous."

Which one is correct?

Both of those names sound awfully close in tone to the Council of Conservative Citizens...they probably have a lot more in common.

170 Walter L. Newton  Wed, Jul 14, 2010 3:26:15pm

Things kind of slowed down here... I have a brand new slab of Chinese Peacock Jasper... maybe I'll cut out a piece and do a test grind and polish. I've never worked Chinese Peacock Jasper before...

These people don't need anyone on the inside any agency, nor do they need to hack into any computer or whatnot. They get the info the old fashioned way—social engineering. The letter SpaceJesus linked to says as much.

Well... sound like is not what it says on the letter head of the list sent to the State of Utah. In the letter to the state, they claim to be a unknown group, their words. And the state is calling the group "anonymous." I'll go with anonymous until more investigation is uncovered. Not that it diminishes the content and intent of the material... I'm just interested in fingering the right group of nuts.

I'm looking forward to saying "I die wasted." Or nothing at all... who cares?

Every Man or Woman only gets so many heartbeats on this Earth..
What you do with them can effect not only you but maybe the world...What do you do with your heartbeats?
Ryan White died of Aids when he was like 12 yrs old.. Yet he effected more people than we ever effect. He had courage and changed America's view of Aids..We all claim to be brave.. But there was few braver than a 12 yr old facing death...And he inspired us...
A Marine fighting in a foreign country wanting to serve his country half way around the world dies on the battlefield cries out for his Mother.. Alone..
He matters
What we do on this earth alive matters entirely in death...Every heartbeat
There are just so many heartbeats...

I was talking about the point of dying... I never said anything about what one does with his whole life up to that point... did I?

What's important, what's only important is what you do up to the point of death, because you can't do shit after that. Make good use of it now.

God, I fucking hope he's nuts. I'm scared shitless right now.

He's making a rather large seemingly outrageous claim, he's going to a lot more evidence than speculation.

BP's drill site isn't the only place deep wells have been dug.

re: #30 MandyManners

If it's bullshit, what's the big deal, then?

Because there will be people who will be harrassed based on being on this list. I just hope no-one is hurt or worse. And if that does happen, I hope anyone invoved in releasing this list is prosecuted for murder. What an utter bunch of fuckwits.

179 BishopX  Wed, Jul 14, 2010 5:08:15pm

Update from the NYTimes:

Mr. Yapías, the former director of the state’s Office of Hispanic Affairs, said he was convinced that the list had come from the State Department of Workforce Services, an agency that combines resources for job seekers, employers and people seeking assistance like food stamps or Medicaid. The list includes information that other agencies might collect, he said, but Workforce Services’ application form includes a question that other information-laden agencies like the Division of Motor Vehicles, for example, would not ever ask: “Is anyone in your home currently pregnant?”

I fear this is only the beginning.

And it's pure Nazism.

re: #3 Obdicut

Now, this is what McCarthyism actually looks like, folks. In case you were wondering.

It's worse than that, IMO. McCarthy ruined lives and reputations. This list, if it's real, has the ability to get people hurt if a truly deranged vigilante type gets it in their head to "do something".

Scary stuff.

Sadly, so do I.

Pfft. Everyone knows Hitler was a liberal, just like Obama. This is just Real Americans protecting themselves from those evil Mexicans.
