‘Tea Party Federation’ Expels ‘Tea Party Express’ for Nonexistent Racism

After screaming all week that there is absolutely no racism in Tea Party groups, today the “National Tea Party Federation” expelled Mark Williams and his “Tea Party Express” for … something. Couldn’t be racism, there is none in the Tea Party.

Now, of course, they’ll claim the nonexistent problem is solved.

“We, in the last 24 hours, have expelled Tea Party Express and Mark Williams from the National Tea Party Federation because of the letter that he wrote,” David Webb said of the blog post by Williams that satirized a fictional letter from what he called “Colored People” to President Abraham Lincoln.

I don’t get it. Just a few days ago David Webb was swearing up and down that the NAACP are the real racists, and that their accusation of racist elements in the Tea Party is false, false, completely false.

“A false charge of racism is itself, racist,” New York tea party organizer David Webb said. “This resolution shows they no longer serve the black community’s interests to advance people of color within American culture. Instead, they exert their power to isolate and control people of color.”

And David Webb is still denying today, even as he announces that one of the national spokespeople of the Tea Party movement has been expelled for one of the ugliest racist screeds I’ve ever read.

Last night, the members of the National Tea Party Federation participating in an "All Hands" conference call unanimously decided the following:

The membership of the National Tea Party Federation has this evening suspended and will immediately expel Tea Party Express from any further association with the Federation should they fail to publicly rebuke Mark Williams and remove him from their ranks by 3 pm eastern time Saturday July 17.

The rebuke must take the following form:

1. Mark Williams must be officially removed from the ranks of the Tea Party Express.

2. Notice of Mark Williams' removal must be placed prominently on the official Tea Party Express website.

3. Tea Party Express must issue a press release articulating points 1 and 2 above.

Last night, a member of the National Tea Party Federation communicated our decision directly to a member of the leadership team of Tea Party Express. That leader's response was clear: they have no intention of taking the action we required for their group to continue as a member of the National Tea Party Federation.

Therefore, effective immediately the National Tea Party Federation is expelling Tea Party Express from the ranks of our membership.

Clearly the problem isn't the racism, it's the calling out by the NAACP that has made them finally take notice that this is hurting the cause... whatever that is.

The purge implies that there is enough structure to define and enforce a TP orthodoxy. That conflicts with all the claims of "movement, not an organization". Soon there will be a group insurance plan.

I suspect that acknowledgement would drive many of their tea party supporters away since that racist element is why they're there in the first place.

The standard Tea Party Denial Mode Response is to claim that the NAACP has called the Tea Party "racist" (which it did not do, it just asked them to refud, er, I mean repudiate their more racist elements) and then start into a counter rant about the NAACP's inhrerent "racism".

It is a loaded topic, and bandying the term on any account is going to raise hackles, but I believe the NAACP made the right call and offered up the right challenge to the Tea Party.
