Perhaps they can all wear little armband to identify themselves to one another, maybe a uniform. Something in brown maybe.

“The site for the event features 13 speakers, with at least 8 speakers being persons of color.” They may be the only persons of color at the event. Later, ‘“Think what it would mean to this nation if we would have an open forum and a real tea summit — instead of a beer summit — on race relations,” he said.

Jealous said he was open to the idea, but said the forum should be on issues other than race.

“There should be no debate about racism,” he said’

Andrew Breitbart has posted his “video proof” that the NAACP is “racist,” and man, is it weak. It’s almost embarrassing to see the nonsensical race-baiting slop he’s throwing to the hordes.

23 Cineaste  Mon, Jul 19, 2010 12:14:31pm

Someone needs to buy them the following:

1. A basic guide to American political thought. I recommend any of John Patrick Diggins’ books.

2. A dictionary/thesaurus combo pack.

3. Some Earl Gray tea to throw around the building (they’ll never get the irony of buying a British tea)

I don’t understand how an organization whose entire purpose is to deal with race issues can be accused of “playing the race card”. It’s like accusing a blackjack player of “playing the ace”.

OT- I want to congratulate McSpiff and Sattv4u2 for the deft manner in which they ran off a new member this morning by acting like a couple of juveniles who had nothing better to do than hassle the newbie JCrow. Even though he hadn’t posted anything negative and was attempting to engage in a reasonable dialog, the pair of you went after his name with the usual snarkiness. It didn’t help that he was learning how to post on here and didn’t know how to use the quote buttons or any other navigation tools, nor did he know the process by which we all answer each other. You two were having too good a time amusing yourselves, to give a new person the benefit of the doubt. If Charles is trying to grow this site by attracting intelligent and thoughtful members, he just lost an excellent potential member, who I very seriously doubt will be back. And BTW, JCrow is my husband and his name is one he has used for years. It doesn’t have anything to do with politics, race or any other projections you may have had whirling in your heads.

32 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Mon, Jul 19, 2010 12:22:10pm

This is only an appalling form of blame the victim. The teabags know they are racist scum. Rather than clean their own house, they blame the victim and attempt to put the aggrieved on defense.

It is the same tactic of trying to show in court that the rape victim was a “slut who asked for it.” It is just as false and just as appalling.

I recognize that we should not call for violence and that Charles frowns on this - so rather than calling for beat downs of tea-baggers, can I simply wish them a severe limp?

Runner up - Louis Golmert (sp?) the crazy man from Texas.

Just a hunch.

35 Sol Berdinowitz  Mon, Jul 19, 2010 12:22:50pm

A key gripe (as featured in a book advertised on Newsmax) is that “liberals” will call anyone a racist who opposes Obama’s politics.

Which is not the case at all, it is entirely possible to be against Obama and not be a racist.

But it is difficult not to come across as racist if one has no reasonable, sound arguments against Obama other than knee-jerk, emotional rants.

36 wrenchwench  Mon, Jul 19, 2010 12:23:48pm

I’ve had a couple of gripes with Obama - the moratorium, and the make-up of the panel studying this thing - and I’ve described my reasons why, and no one has called me a racist.

It is, as you say, perfectly possible to take issue in a rational way, without engaging in a knee-jerk, emotional rant.

Having issues with Obama’s policies, citing experts in the field, historical paralells, etc, not racist.

Emailing him photoshopped at a witch doctor, talking about “coloreds” and “massa”, might be more than just a tad racist there.

May not matter. Forty years ago the Republican Party decided to try to ride the wave of Dixiecrat resentment to power. All that happened was the destruction of the Republican Party as we knew it. Now, again for expedience’ sake, they’re going to ride another wave of anger. Where will that take them (and us)?

The entire teabag identity revolves around the fear that white folks in America are under attack. This is their central meme. There is no way to remove racism once you start from that premise.

Here’s the Commie quote in question on the DOJ web site:
“The common law is the will of mankind issuing from the life of the people.”

Pretty outrageous to say laws imitate from the will of man I guess. (From the link)

“So much for the “Laws of Nature and Nature’s God,” the law that animated the Founders. So much our ”unalienable rights” coming from our Creator. Now they issue not from the hand of God but from the “will of mankind.”

will of mankind.

I’ve got a choice to make — I just got approached by an advertiser who wants to place ads on LGF from the “American Energy Alliance,” a well-known global warming denial group. This kind of issue is never easy to decide — is it better to take their money and use it to continue promoting the truth about global warming, or turn down the ads to prevent them from using LGF to promote deceptions?

If they don’t advertise at LGF, they’ll just go elsewhere, and there are plenty of websites that won’t have a problem.

If they don’t advertise at LGF, they’ll just go elsewhere, and there are plenty of websites that won’t have a problem.

Maybe I should ask the magic 8-ball.

Take their money. Better in your pocket than somewhere else. If they get pissy later with your continued Global warming articles, tell them to pound sand.

Say no. Sorry, that money is just too tainted. Say no in memory of a real climate scientist: Steve Schneider, who just died unexpectedly in London, of a heart attack, aged 65. He was one of the team who won the Nobel Prize in 2006 for the work of the IPCC. More recently, he was the one who debunked the credentials of all those supposed “scientists” who signed the petition denying man-made climate change. He was an important voice and will be missed.

Well, that’s not cool, and I apologize on behalf of LGF. However, a thick skin is a necessity when posting comments anywhere on the Internet, not just here.

Thank you Charles. I think that is true to a degree. I know for a fact that JCrow anticipated a certain level of needing a thick skin. What makes me annoyed is the rapidity with which some members regress to very adolescent behavior without cause. It isn’t just in this instance. I’ve seen other people ridiculed and run off from almost the get go. Joking on a forum is one thing, and so is disagreement. But how in the world can we have meaningful exchanges that others will take seriously if we behave like a bunch of frat boys and girls with new members who are getting to know us? I came to LGF on the recommendation that it was centrist and that there were a number of intelligent people here. LGF has gotten pretty well known. I, for one, would like to see it’s rep upheld, not see it slide into mediocrity because some members can’t post without entertaining themselves at someone else’s expense. Frankly, I think it is a fairly serious problem on the internet and just because that is the way it is, it isn’t perhaps the best way to be.

Part of the denailists’ campaign depends upon the appearance of integrity. It will be a mosque. It will also be a community center.

But the real problem with the opposition is that these opponents are falling into the trap of lumping all Muslims in with the fanatics/jihadis. It’s why the Bush (and now Obama) Administration try to keep the distinction of avoiding a clash of civilizations - it’s a war on terrorism (even though it is on jihadists attempting to establish an Islamist regime in various parts of the world forcing the submission of non-like thinking people regardless of whether they’re Muslim, Jewish, Christian, etc. )

Opponents to the Cordoba House proposal are lumping the backers of the project in with the jihadis - which will drive off those who want tolerance and mutual respect - playing right into the hands of the jihadis who would use it as proof of the righteousness of their cause.

Breitbart Has PROOF the NAACP Is Racist

Andrew Breitbart is here once again to save the day, this time to show us that the NAACP is racist, NOT Teabaggers. “The NAACP and the Congressional Black Caucus do not want racial harmony. They want political victory, and the race card is their Strativarius,” he writes, hilariously. The NAACP wants to take out their main political opponents, the Teabaggers, by playing classical music on rare, expensive violins. But SORRY BLACK PEOPLE, Breitbart has stopped the NAACP once and for all, as he has his hands on the AMAZING racism video that will destroy their association for the advancement of colored people.

And let’s not kid ourselves about the people who are making the offer.

I wasn’t here. But, I would expect that the nic “JCrow” (Jim Crow is an assumption, but not a huge leap) would get a much different response than Crow T. Robot or somesuch.

He should come back and visit. But folks who don’t know him may ask about the name. All he has to do is give a quickie explanation, I don’t think he’ll catch too much flack.

They did start out asking about the name. He was helping me with the morning chores, and before he could answer them, the heckling started. Then when he did try to explain, he accidentally did it under my name as we were both logged in. It was the snarkiness beginning before he could even explain that disgusted him.

re: #117 Macha

My discussion this morning with user “JCrow” quoted for the record:

re: #337 McSpiff

Welcome newbie :-D, you’ve been quiet so far!

Mind I ask what the story behind your username is?

re: #341 McSpiff
To sattv4u2:

Hey I like knowing whats behind the name. Pretty sure I asked you the same thing. Heard all about your work if I do recall correctly.

re: #344 McSpiff
To sattv4u2 again:

I generally try to give the benefit of the doubt.

And 30 odd posts later, with a slight amount of snark:

re: #372 McSpiff

Aww did JCrow run off before explaining his shiny new nic?

When did JCrow finally reply?

re: #451 Macha

“Aww did JCrow run off before explaining his shiny new nic?”

re: 372

Well, I am one of those Earth Spirituality sorts and I have a thing for crows. The name would just be Crow but I think it was in use, so it became JCrow. No relation to Jim Crow, Old Crow, Black Crow or any other such Crow. Just the regular crow hopping around and looking for entertainment.

About 70 odd posts later. I was long gone. My apologies for not seeing his explanation. Now what post made me even notice his user name in the first place?

Aww did re: #316 JCrow

I think the NAACP is trying to pin a racist label on the Tea Party groups because of the correlation between the overall membership and whatever proportion of those members who fit the description of being racist. That is a hard argument to press as the Tea Party supporters can point to the absence of racist ideology in the positions of the various groups. Despite this, at least in my opinion the Tea Party groups “look like a (racist) duck, walk like a duck and talk like a duck”.

A post where a new user, with the username “JCrow” opens up with “I think the NAACP is trying to pin a racist label of the tea party…” and he then proceeds to explain why Tea Parties aren’t racist, until his last line, where he kind of goes back and says yes, maybe they are racist.

Sorry for ganging up on the new guy I guess, but I see nothing wrong my behavior.

The Cordoba House will get built if it gets all the necessary approvals. It has to get LPC approval (pending), and City Council approval (pending). Then, it needs the financing to come through and that’s anything but a sure thing.

If all those things happen, then the project will proceed, even with the ongoing opposition from the SIOE and their ilk. The law permits this project and if the group conforms to the law, there’s nothing to stop it from going ahead.

Maybe I should ask the magic 8-ball.

Sure they will go elsewhere, but it won’t be YOUR website that is assisting in deception if you turn them down. This is a bitch to decide, but given the stand you have taken with the global warming deniers, you run the risk of giving them some good ammunition in the form of pointing out your hypocrisy if you take their cash.

re: #136 Fozzie Bear

They are:

American Energy Alliance.

americanenergyalliance.org

Look them over. These are paid fossil fuel shills. This is from their mission statement.

The American Energy Alliance (AEA) is the independent grassroots affiliate of the Institute for Energy Research (IER) . AEA’s mission is to enlist and empower energy consumers to encourage policymakers to support policies that lead to abundant, affordable and reliable energy for all Americans and to hold our leaders accountable for their actions – not their words – towards this important end….

….AEA will also help fulfill the mission of the Institute for Energy Research, which is to establish itself as the premier source of accurate, substantive and timely energy information for policymakers, the media and the public. By communicating IER’s decades of scholarly research to AEA grassroots activists, AEA will empower citizens with facts so that people who believe in freedom can reclaim the moral high ground in the national and state public policy debates on energy and environmental
policy.

So now who are Institute for Energy Research?

Here is from their blurb on Climate change: (Italics mine)

That human activity has increased the atmospheric concentration of CO2, a gas known to ‘force’ climate or increase temperatures while the Earth has warmed about 0.6 º Celsius over the last one hundred years is generally accepted. How the climate works and the relationship of different variables remains to be determined.

There is, however, a sense of urgency among many to take action in the form of policies to reduce CO2 emissions. Although the policies would be extremely expensive, consume resources that could be directed to immediate and profound problems, and have limited potential to affect climate, many contend that there is an urgent need to implement some sort of policy. Many potenital factors can contribute to and exacerbate the sense that policies are urgently needed.

Now these people want to see themselves as the “the premier source of accurate, substantive and timely energy information for policymakers, the media and the public.”

Here is their board of directors. It has not a single scientist on the list:

Jim Clarkson, President, Resource Supply Management

Steven F. Hayward, F. K. Weyerhaeuser Fellow, American Enterprise Institute

Preston Marshall, President, MarOpCo

Wayne Gable, President, Gable Consulting

Robert L. Testwuide III, CFP, Vice President, Wealth Management Advisor, Merrill Lynch

Charles, without knowing the particulars of the situation, not taking the money is better in the long run. Taking ad money in the issues one writes about, even for a short time, is the sort of thing that exposes people to accusations of bias essentially forever, no matter how baseless they are. Allegations that LGF is a denialist site, “sold out”, etc. may seem ludicrous now, but there’s always someone who will think of the ads when they feel LGF is not being sufficiently zealous.

re: #177 Walter L. Newton

I read about the “submittal” of this group last week, or sometime and something like that. Honestly, what is a Caucus and what can the House Tea Party Caucus do, not do, why is this good, bad… why does the GOP get this caucus?

A caucus is the Congressional equivalent of an after-school club. A group of Congresspeople who want to get together in a little committee or meeting may do so, if their proposal to be a caucus is approved.

There is a Congressional Bourbon Caucus, a 4-H Caucus, a Hungarian-American Caucus, the Blue Dogs have one, Interstate 69 has one. There are an awful lot of them.

The Tea Party Caucus doesn’t get any money set aside for it, but they can use Congressional resources (meeting spaces, money allocated for them to use in policy planning) etc., to do Caucus-y things. They can hold meetings, come up with plans, collaborate on how to respond to legislation, etc.

I don’t think it’s particularly good or bad, except that if the Tea Party Caucus actually gathers much influence, it’s a pretty good sign that they’re gaining traction in Republican Congressional circles, which I would classify as not so good.

New England’s what I was thinking of. The countryside is a patchwork of pasture and second/third-growth woods, and it’s not uncommon to see deer munching alongside cows, or cows nosing into the edge of the woods to get to some nicer grass.

My own personal theory is that if you can see the animal well enough to shoot it, you ought to be able to visually verify that it’s a deer before firing, but this is not universal.

Case in Vermont (?) years ago, a woman was shot in her own backyard because a hunter confused something she was wearing with the marks on a white-tailed deer’s rump.

That’s a really dumb way to make an argument.

Deer are not just found in thick woods. Deer are also found in thin woods, chaparral, swamps, and basically all over the damn place. The go onto plains in order to feed quite often. They like woods to sleep in, but that can be a brief spate of woods in a valley surrounded by dry hills, as it is in Northern California.

Deer will even travel along just little canyons or gullies for protection to get at the nice crops on the plains.

My only problem was with the statement “Reminds me of opening day deer hunters who kill off half the cattle in the country.” not that you can see cows and deer grazing near by each other. Hell, there are so many deer in our neighborhood, my Garfield like cat can be seen lounging around while deer are grazing 20 feet away.

But not half the cattle in the country is getting killed on opening day of deer season. (My cat got grazed once).

Well, I respectfully suggest you don’t have a good bead on deer behavior if you are going to suggest that deer and cows don’t like the same type of environment.

It is my experience that deer just don’t give a shit. At least the white-tail variety. They’ll raid your bird feeder if you mount it low enough. They will steal hay from cows, sleep in barns if the door is left open, etc.

They really aren’t all that picky about where they hang out.

I don’t tend to talk about the President very much unless I’m around the friends who I know I can trust to be reasonable when I criticize policy. Obama is king around here (Oakland, CA) so when I do talk about the President in public, I choose my words very carefully, and I keep the criticism on a low hum.

Yeah ok definitely true there. It’s not like it’s so common that it’s a regular tax write-off for cattle farmers. “Oh crap Martha, there goes another one.”

I have no idea about why we’re talking about deer, but on our island property they freaking love to come out and feed/etc in the open field by the cabin, and at our lake they seem just as happy in hte open scrub as they do in denser areas.

On the island they’re a bit of a problem right now, no predators left, and not enough places where they can be hunted, so we’re getting weird mutants and overpopulation.

re: #262 windsagio

Hey… WIndy… this was written this morning with you (and some others) in mind, but you weren’t around… and anyone else that may enjoy…

The family and I spent the day the the Colorado Renaissance Festival in Larkspar, one of the three largest renaissance festivals in the country, both for size and age. I had never been to a renaissance festival before, even though I was good friends with a number of the influential folks and entertainers who developed the festival in Texas over 30 years ago.

I was appalled. This is an event built around misogyny, vulgar behavior, injurious activities, open carry of weapons, death, gluttony, avarice, using beasts of burdens for entertainment and public displays of lewdness and drunkenness. Not to mention tough turkey talons.

In a world were we are trying hard to introduce acceptance, diversity and peaceful behavior, is there really a place for this kind of function?

I saw people celebrating the antics of a number of poor town fools, hurling insults and tomatoes. There were aristocracy lording over dirty peasants, physical abuse of subjects and visitors from the hinterlands. And the most obscene display of mans inhumanity to man was the jousting, which was like a hockey game on horses.

If you cherish any of the progress man has made toward a more respectable mingling of man and nature, with our fellow citizens and beasts of the universe, you will stand behind me in decrying these throwbacks to a time of uncouth gutter level existence and utter disregard to the sacredness of men and woman.

Guess you’ll have to explain that to all those thousands of hunters that buy deer blinds and deer stands. Tell them all they have to do is go out to an open field and wait!

They get quite a lot of deer. Good hunting there.

Here’s some guidlines to helping your cattle not negatively impact deer:

I suspect the Colorado one is good, consider it’s been around over 30 years, attracts the best entertainers in the Ren Fair circuit and I had a good time. As I mentioned this morning, I was actually hanging around when the folks down in Magnolia Texas was putting together their fair, over 30 years ago, but I was too busy with other outdoor entertainment projects to get involved with that project. Even though close to the beginning of the whole thing, I never got around to attending one… so… it turned out to be a treat.

My husband’s grandmother once shot a deer from her bathroom window.

My dad shot one from our kitchen during breakfast once. Opening day of deer season (I was in 5th grade at the time). We lived on top of a hill. Someone noticed two deer on the next hill over…about 400 yards across a gully. I got his gun, my little sister slid open the sliding glass door, he used the corner of the table as a rest, squeezed off one shot, and the three-point just stayed laying on the ground. The buck next to it hopped up, but it was just a little “forkey” so he let it go. We drove around in our ‘62 Willy’s (great jeep…I learned to drive in it when I was 9), field dressed it, hung it in the shop, then he took us to school. Me with fresh deer blood on my white shirt and green jeans (school uniform) to show off to my friends.

They wait to cross until they can see where they are going… Which means at night, they wait until your car is almost to where they are, then they cross.

Right at this very moment, or in general? We have them all over the neighborhood… you really have to be at duck and sometimes after dark, they will jump in front of you car unexpectedly… saw a dead one on the Hwy yesterday afternoon just up the road here.

Worst deer story I heard in Lousiana: apparently one night, my husband’s uncle hit a deer with his car, coming home. He, apparently thinking the meat could be salvaged, loaded the injured deer into the back of his car.

Not the back of his truck, mind you. The backseat of the car.

Then he rushed it home. The deer expired on the way.

The worst part of this was that you’re supposed to call and report any deer killed out of hunting season. The phone call was choice. “No, it was HIT at the intersection of the highway and White Ark. Now it’s in my front yard, in the backseat of my son’s car.”

The point of the story btw is that there really are no new jokes, except for puns, and we don’t really laugh at those ;)

What subsequent comments?

Perhaps when I stated that if I signed in as CManson or JWGacy I would expect to be asked about it

I got called a whale dick (baculum) the first time I posted here.

I’m sorry. That was definitely not welcoming.

re: #200 Obdicut

McSpiff didn’t ask a single thing that was rude of Jcrow, though. Even Satt didn’t really say much of anything.

What was the comment or comments that particularly hurt or annoyed him?

You’re being rather rude towards members right now— by your own standards, to me, you’re shooting before you look.

I probably am Obdicut. It is a small thing and I intend no rudeness. I also apologize for not answering this sooner. I’ve been interrupted through this exchange more times than I care to count. To answer your question of what was particularly said, it was mild, as has already been pointed out. It wasn’t asking about the name. It was the tone of the comments when he didn’t reply right away and then when an attempt was made, an inadvertent error was made with which name he used to post Small potatoes by LGF standards. Disappointing when I’ve been telling him for several months what neat folks are here. I’m dropping this now. Hope others can.

re: #445 Macha

I hope he comes back. I found LGF pretty intimidating at first. I didn’t even comment for a few months after I registered. Fortunately, that didn’t automatically cause accusations of “Sock!” back then like it would now.

OK, now I’ll drop it. :)

re: #158 McSpiff

Thank you for your response. It’s unfortunate that it played out the way it did time wise. I appreciated your posting the exchange. The comments caught JCrow by surprise and, well you know the rest. I hold no hard feelings and hope you don’t either.

Sorry for ganging up on the new guy I guess, but I see nothing wrong my behavior.

Nor with mine

The name CRIES out to be questioned

I’ll come back logged in as CManson or GWGacy. I PRAY that if I did I would be “ganged up on”

Yah, yah, if you only knew how totally opposite from any political reference that name was, and it didn’t cross either my mind or his when he used it. In retrospect the name does cry out to be questioned. And that was OK. Just hold your pee till you get an answer next time. I’ve got no hard feelings. Hope that goes the same for you.

There’s a similarity, and the politics are the same, right down to unfairly criticizing Israel while defending the Palestinians.

It’s him. Check out his picture on the American Third Position website. The same racial politics.

Why do we take this party seriously again?

Because if they win control of one or both houses, they can do mischief if nothing else.

Think in terms of a baby with a loaded .45.

re: #117 Macha

Hilarious given that you updinged Ryannons disgusting, vicious and completely insane - not to mention deleted - rant against my wife.

Sorry I know this is a dead thread, but in case you don’t see this I will be sure to link to it for you in future if you decide to make it relevant to do so.
