Farmers in Sherrod Case: ‘She Saved Our Farm’

US News • Views: 3,221

Roger Spooner, the farmer to whom Shirley Sherrod referred in her speech, says Sherrod is not a “racist,” she’s a lifelong friend — and she helped save their farm.

I don’t know how Andrew Breitbart sleeps at night. What he did to Sherrod is beyond despicable. This was one of the most loathsome episodes of creepy right wing dishonesty I have ever witnessed.

And that’s saying plenty.

Well, G-d willing, this will end up in a really big law suit that ends Breitbart's career and splashes Fox as well.

I'm glad that those people stood up for the woman who helped them. I hope they help turn things around for Sherrod and for her to get justice....

Breitbart doesn't care. He thinks he's serving the greater good by by attacking the "Marxist" Obama. The irony is that in his willingness to hurt people to accomplish his goals, Andrew Breitbart is closer to Stalin than Barack Obama will ever be. Once again the wingnuts attack Obama only to make him look good simply because he isn't a scumbag like them. All their attacks on him tend to backfire; He's like the Roadrunner.

Fox has the money to pay, but hopefully this will put them off running hit pieces like that. Breitbart, though, should be done behind this.

Well, even if he survives, Fox will likely avoid him for a good long while. An expensive lawsuit is the kind of thing that will make the suits dial the crazy back, or at least I hope it will.

And now for a lighter take on prejudice...

21 Targetpractice  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 8:06:35pm

The only thing more disgusting than Breitbart's actions in this whole affair is the rush by the Right to "defend" him. I've heard at least half a dozen different variations of the same theme, that he's as much as a "victim" as the NAACP and USDA, that he too was duped by this edited video, and that he was only doing what he "thought best."

At the same time, they've likewise shifted gears in the face of the full video and now started focusing on the audience. They're pointing out that the audience was full of NAACP members who "clapped and cheered" as Sherrod stated that she felt Mr. Spooner would be better helped by "one of his own kind." They want to spin that into proof that the NAACP is full of racists and thus should "clean house" before going after the Tea Party.

And, of course, they're now trying to act "shocked" at the NAACP and USDA's actions, "shocked" that they took swift action rather than waiting for the evidence. The latter, in particular, they're trying to spin into an indictment of Obama, claiming that he was the one who ordered pressure be applied to Sherrod to resign. That he either "threw her under the bus" or "is too inexperienced to recognize a con."

Breitbart's just the tip of the disgusting, racist, shallow-minded, slime-covered iceberg. The whole Right is slowly rotting out and the name of its affliction is Obama Derangement Syndrome.

22 Killgore Trout  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 8:06:45pm

Brietbart sure stepped in it this time. Although none of the usual blogs are actually blaming him for editing the videos, which they should be, I think the wingnuts are getting tired of being embarrassed by Andrew. The Acorn tapes were eventually debunked but it took a few months and most right wing blogs just swept it under the proverbial rug. The wheels came off the black panther case a few days ago. I suspect that most wingnut blogs are going to be very cautious of his Journolist scoops. I don't think Brietbart is finished but he's wasted a lot of his capital by peddling easily debunked bullshit.
I don't think the wingnuts are done with outrageous outrages. I'm sure they're frustrated about not being taken seriously but this is more driven by instinct than intellect. They can't resist. The only reason they're bailing out on this story is because the debunking happened so quickly it was impossible to ignore.

I don't even believe that much. So long as he can drum up an "outrage," whether from whole cloth or by stitching together scraps, that makes Obama and/or the Democrats look back, Fox News will be there to report it as "fact."

By the way, if this story doesn't absolutely exemplify why we don't see Barack Obama throwing folding chairs out onto the court when he doesn't get his way, then we are even more obtuse than I fear. People are wondering, "Why doesn't he show more emotion? Why doesn't he let us know what he feels?" Yeah, it's not like black people attempting to honestly explain how angry they feel about the endemic racism they get caught up in has ever caused a black official any problems, especially with Breitbart around to mix from the master tape.

48 lostlakehiker  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 8:19:46pm

It's not a shocking surprise, but it is dismaying, that Sherrod, or anybody, would be summarily fired without having had a chance to present their side of the story and supporting evidence.

That's nothing unique to government, or the Obama administration. One wrong word, one too-honest moment, and it's game over. Organizations are snakebit.

We have too many hounds out to hound a person to ruin if it will serve some partisan purpose. Breitbart has joined one of the packs. But we also have a shortage of fortitude. Knowing how often the first "outrage" is no such thing when the rest of the facts come in, why do we allow or condone or even participate in this kind of public show trial kangaroo court? The voice of the mob is the force that pushes institutions into kangaroo-court firings.

Where does it end? What has to happen for even more responsible sane Conservatives besides just Charles to say "Enough is Enough!", pull off a William F. Buckley and banish Breitbart, Glenn Beck and their ilk to the rubbish bin of phony "Conservatives" where they belong?

I fear what will have to happen until the Fox-fueled epistemological bizzarro circus finally ends. These outrageous outrages are appearing at an increasing rate, wrecking more and more careers, stirring up predictable racial tensions, and even snookering the Obama White House with no seeming ability in the American media landscape to put a lid on this constant stream of right-wing lies, distortions and out-right slanders.

The insane right wants an all out race/culture war, and they are happily smearing their way down the primrose path of manufactured racial resentment to an ugly, ugly place.

Obama is the president. Under normal circumstances, it is not the president's job to run around the country rescuing USDA workers being attacked by psychotic bloggers as revenge for the NAACP saying somethin' mean about the Tea Party.

Of course, these are far from normal circumstances.

Is the Secretay of Agriculure under the command of the president?

I find myself wanting to believe the right thing is to give this woman her job back and if it takes the President of the United States to get that done, then that's what needs to be done. Otherwise, the motherfuckers win, and I'm tired of the moterhfuckers winning.

I do agree, and if I had Obama's cell number, I'd be on it this minute.

But I do see this being dumped on his doorstep, which is kind of insane. Obama didn't start this, and it is no part of his job description to deal with it. I'd like to see him do something for this woman, if that's what it takes, but I am very wary of the number of people who've popped up announcing that if he doesn't, he's 'throwing Sherrod under the bus', and failing at being president.

I think it ends, when the independents get their own party, a centrist one, and thus marginalize, and cut adrift the crazies in their own, by then, powerless parties.

And do not forget that the left has crazies too.

Same tactics that brought down ACORN. It works.

And when it doesn't, there are no consequences. Another news cycle comes and that's it. We can say that Breitbart "lost credibility" with this, but it doesn't really matter that much. He will continue to go appear on Fox, CNN, Bill Maher.

Self-employed media clowns with an audience can get burned if they cross the line enough times, but it takes a lot to get to that point. Just look at what it took with Ann Coulter.

Hey if Bush fucked up the MMS under tenure as President, and the f***ed up (or more exactly coked up) version of the MMS gave BP the permit to drill the well that sprung a leak (that brought the cat, that ate the rat) then it's not exactly a stretch to say some of the blame is Bush's fault...

Mr. Spooner's cap commemorates the USS Yorktown (CV-5), the aircraft carrier lost at the epic battle of Midway in 1942. 40 men went down with the ship, there were 2,270 survivors. The wreck was re-discovered by Robert Ballard in 1998.
Mr. Spooner is 87 years old. I wonder if he is a veteran of that battle and that ship?

However, this is and has been on Obama's plate. This is the chance for the black president to really smash the anti-black racists of the right. He will pass a golden opportunity to put these cretins on the defensive and deal them a blow that will resonate through the elections if he plays it right. Or, he could take a whimpy "moral high ground."

The bottom line is to come out and restore Shrrod and apologize to her publicly for being snookered by the lie machine of Fox and the teabags. Say flat out that they are and have always been the real racists and that America understands their race baiting, smears and slimy tactics. Use those exact words.

As Fox implodes with endless drivels of insanity, they will make a spectacle that no moderate can ignore, while further firing up the liberal base. It will also put the rubes on defense for one.

OR

Obama can just wuss out, because he "has more important things to do" as was suggested by several commenters here earlier.

A question for the legal-lizards here -

In my opinion, Shirley Sharrod has a pretty strong libel case against Andrew Brietbart.

The reasons I think so are threefold:

1. Andrew knowingly published a false story regarding her - When pushed with contradictory evidence, has not backed away from that story, but redirected it as a screed against the NAACP.

2. Shirley Sharrod has most definitely been harmed by this story, in the fact that it cost her job, and has done significant damage to her reputation.

3. From the statements that he's made during interviews, I have no doubt that this story was designed to damage her specifically, and the NAACP in a larger sense, in retaliation for the NAACP condemnation of racism within the Tea Party movement.

Thoughts?

re: #216 RadicalModerate

i kind of touched on this earlier.

i think her chances of winning a libel or defamation case are slim, because the statements he published were not false in the truest sense of the word. they were her own statements taken utterly out of context, but they were her own statements.

he will also likely argue that he didn't have the whole tape [which is irrelevant when you're discussing his hate.mongering and race.baiting, because either way, he's guilty of those charges], and therefore didn't know that the edited snippets "presented her in a false light" [and again, due to the fact that they were her own statements, i don't even think we'll get to this point of the argument].

sherrod is a public official, and the rules are slightly different. in a time when journalists are honest and report true facts, even with a bit of editorial diction, this is a boon to a democratic public. see: watergate.

unfortunately, it's situations like this, where the otherwise reasonable law keeps someone like sherrod from just compensation, that make my teeth grind at nigt.

228 ssn697  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 9:04:01pm

Here's a reference:

It’s been more than 67 years since Roger Spooner stood on the deck of the U.S.S. Yorktown, watching an air parade of kamikaze pilots dive into the carrier while he loaded 54-pound shells to fire at circling Japanese planes in a frantic attempt to keep the ship from sinking at the Battle of Midway.

Fantastic find! Thanks, Jaunte.

Fair enough. This is a golden chance to go on the offensive with these cretins. Everyone knows who the real racists are. Everyone knows that the GOP is still trying to stop jobs bills and only narrowly had their filibuster defeated to extend unemployment benefits. Everyone knows the GOP is anti-science and anti- education.

Everyone knows they are dirty racist scum who deal from the bottom of the deck everytime.

It is time for the good guys to take these SOBs down with the old-fashioned tactic of shining a light and speaking the truth directly.

It is time the GOP and Fox and the Teabaggs are called front and center for their racist ways. Name names - I love how the NAACP named Palin. Do it a lot. Just say it. As they get more unhinged they will give the gift of more ammo to use against them.

That is probably quite accurate.

The WH also could just have said "Handle it", and the person interpreted it to mean "get her out of here". We don't know.

Just sayin' the White House may not have been the ones to decide she needed to be out of there.

Another plausible scenario: WH called them and asked what is going on, USDA said we're going to can here. WH says OK.

Sherrod's boss/deliverer says 'The call came from the WH.'

What I'm thinking is, one of the village idiots got drunk and decided to teach me a lesson.

My phone number is available on whitepages.com, so I got a little call.

Since last year they have known my real name, my locale, and what I and Haku look like, from a local paper.

Rodent constantly calls me out by my meatspace name on his blogs.

I have offended so many right-wingers that by now I must be on multiple lists.

I find it funny. With all the reading I do, at most I sleep three hours a night and if so much as a mouse goes by in my old, creaky house, Haku wakes up and alerts me.

But this is just one more little reminder of how much hate is out there.

Robert Spencer has publicly accused me of trying to destroy the "brave little band" of anti-jihadists, which of course includes Pamz. Whom I have intentionally maligned on this blog more times than I can count.

Here I stand. I can do no other.

And I'm always armed.

Sorry dudes, I am just so pissed off right now. I feel awful for Sherrod, but I also just feel angry that Breitbart and his worthless pals have so managed to pull this shit off.

I am imagining for a moment, a scenario in which during the last administration, a dishonest, openly partisan, left-wing 'journalist' with a history of lying about shit smeared a government employee (white, I expect), with being a racist, and got her fired.

I am now trying to imagine a scenario in which that would be a litmus test for the administration of George W. Bush. And I'm imagining the response of some of our more Republican-leaning posters to the suggestion that really, the ball was in Bush's court over this, and a lot would depend on whether he personally betrayed or not the person set up by the journalist.

I'm really annoyed right now. I get it. Folks don't like Obama. Hell, half the time I'm mad at him myself. But for the love of God, people, this is disingenuous stupidness.

Does anyone watch RESCUE ME?

this damn tv show is too much good

282 sffilk  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 6:18:49am

Breitbart was on "Good Morning, America" this morning, saying that 1) he was trying to show that the NAACP is racist; and 2) when he went to the mainstream media with "4 videos" showing that the "n" word was not used at that rally in Washington, DC, a few months ago, that all the mainstream media would have nothing to do with the videos; thus, the mainstream media was more interested in slamming the Tea Party than publishing the truth. When asked by Mr. Stefanopolous why didn't he just put the videos out there, Mr. Breitbart said words to the effect of, "How about you put them on TV right now?"

I merely report what I saw this morning.

And that’s saying plenty.

This is conservatism spouting its most barefaced opinion, and more proof that the term 'sane conservative' is as accurate an oxymoron as there is these days.
