The Farmer Who Supported Sherrod: A Veteran of the Battle of Midway

US News • Views: 4,376

Roger Spooner, the farmer who appeared today on news shows backing up Shirley Sherrod’s story, and who was accused by Andrew Breitbart of being a liar and a “plant,” is not just a lifelong friend of Sherrod; he’s also a veteran of the Battle of Midway.

It’s been more than 67 years since Roger Spooner stood on the deck of the U.S.S. Yorktown, watching an air parade of kamikaze pilots dive into the carrier while he loaded 54-pound shells to fire at circling Japanese planes in a frantic attempt to keep the ship from sinking at the Battle of Midway.

While 165 men on the Yorktown died that day, 85 survived. Some of them remember portions of that day in June. Others remember most of what happened.

“I remember all of it,” Spooner said.

Spooner can almost smell the sea water mixed with oil when he talks about the day the Yorktown was sunk. Spooner and many of his mates spent about 10 hours bobbing up and down in the Pacific in nothing more than their skivvies and a life jacket.

“The dive bombers were coming down right on top of us, straight out of the sun,” Spooner said. “There was nothing we could do with them.”

Spooner said he remembers abandoning the Yorktown and diving into the ocean at about 2:30 p.m. He was rescued by a cruiser about 10 hours later.

That’s a long time to be alone with your thoughts.

“I thought about Iron City,” said Spooner, who joined the Navy in late October, 1941. Two weeks later, Pearl Harbor was bombed and Spooner was thrust straight into the war with no time to go home. “I didn’t think I was ever going to get back.”

I suppose he was a plant when he defended this nation against Imperial Japan…

I look forward to a long painful roasting of Breitbart for this.

I think that should be 85 of the Yorktown crew who still survive. The Yorktown had a crew of 2,600.

Obvious snark, considering Breitbart called him a ‘liberal plant’ because he defended Sherrod. But don’t let context bother you.

Hah! Exactly the credentials to bring down Brietbart. Unquestionable strength of character, the anti Andrew Brietbart. Mr Spooner you may yet do your nation one more great favor. In any case you certainly have my respect.

Well, I’ve got to get some sleep.

But I want to say I really like Ms. Sherrod’s full story.

I don’t know anyone who hasn’t had to do some personal reflection on notions or ideas or biases and come to a final conclusion that change was needed. This is what she did.

And in doing so, in doing the right thing, she won over these folks who she described as “condescending” in her first conversations with them, and they are now themselves doing the right thing.

Speaking about this process she went through took courage and eloquence. And she’s the sort of person I think we would want in our government.

Awesome indeed. I do hope this sinks Breitbart-but I’m not entirely convinced it will. There are conservatives out there who just don’t care what’s true and what isn’t. This has taken attention away from useful work in government and for them, this is a win.

The Yorktown is a unique story: not what it did in battle so much as what it didn’t do. It was almost destroyed in a previous skirmish, assumed sunk. Yet American training and philosophy focused on cross training: besides your normal ship job, all sailors were trained in various fire suppression and damage control, much different that the Japanese. They patched her up and kept her afloat.

The Yorktown took a bloody beating, but survived, only to be taken for another ship later when the Japanese came back again and thoroughly pummeled her again. Those sailors went through hell, but the Yorktown played a decisive role in the Battle of Midway by taking so much of the Japanese focus and firepower.

Deep respect for the Yorktown and her crew.

If memory serves she took such a beating that the Japanese were sure that they had managed to sink two separate carries, since no one ship could have survived what it had gone through….

Then of course there was the Enterprise, which is sort of in a class all of its own when it comes to unsinkability….

By way of depressing contrast, those who have been at the head of this charge to demonized this woman and those she associates with would never dare admit to having had a notion or a point of view that they backed away from or changed after a profound moment of deep introspection.

My thoughts exactly. I recall having to offer to e-mail my DD 214 to Charles to prove libs can serve to some posters. (Charles never questioned me BTW) Spooner is probably not a liberal, just a honest hero that speaks the truth. If the some on the right go after him, it will not turn out well.

“I agree with the sister of one of the 9/11 victims (and a New York resident) who said: “This is a place which is 600 feet from where almost 3,000 people were torn to pieces by Islamic extremists. I think that it is incredibly insensitive and audacious really for them to build a mosque, not only on that site, but to do it specifically so that they could be in proximity to where that atrocity happened.”

Once again if this spot is so sacred why are we not building a memorial park on it like in OK City.
So a “mosque” a few blocks away is bad, but commerce must go on.

So she doubled down.

What will her support be? Has anyone in office, other than the right wing fringers and the Dems in NY said anything yet?

She doubled down.

I don’t think the Yorktown was sunk, she was scuttled.

That is correct: they thought they had a new carrier in their sights and attacked with full force.

BTW, the Japanese did not sink her: she was scuttled.

I’m afraid you are wrong about that. The USN attempted to save the Yorktown and did get her under tow, but en route to Pearl Harbor on June 6th, 1942 she was attacked by the Japanese sub I-168, which fired 4 torpedoes. One missed, two hit the Yorktown, and the fourth hit the destroyer USS Hammon, blowing her in two. Even despite that, Yorktown did not sink until 6am the following morning.

141 Kruk  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 10:14:28pm

To be honest, I was more than a little disillusioned with the state of American politics earlier today. It seemed that three things were pretty obvious:

1) After the ACORN bagjob, Bretbart should have had zero credibility. And yet, based on yet another edited video from him, people (including those who should have known better) rushed to crucify this poor woman. Like the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…

2) Stories from such discredited sources gain traction (and politicians act on them, whether it’s defunding ACORN or pushing Sherrod out the door) only when people *want* to believe them. I think there are a significant number of people who believe that blacks and other minorities have it in for whites. And I’m not talking about the foaming at the mouth racists. I’m talking about the people who would deny to the death that they are racist, but grizzle to each other that “the pendulum has swung too far”, that whites are now discriminated against, that “our children shouldn’t pay the price for the mistakes of the past” etc. They have a sense of unease, and of being wronged. They might have a nagging guilty conscience that tells them blacks will act in the same way towards whites that whites have acted against blacks. And when they hear stories like these, it feeds their fears, and that fear turns to anger.

3) The progressives (from the Obama adminstration to the congresspeople who defunded ACORN to the NAACP) are so gun shy about upsetting this group that they bend so far backwards to be “fair” and “to be better than the other side” that they’re willing to let the haters drive the debate. It’s time to harden up, gentlemen (and ladies). There are people out there who will do anything to wreck what you’re trying to achieve. Trying to play by Marquis of Queensbury rules in a street brawl most likely ends with a knife in your ribs.

And then, just when I was about to give up, I read about Roger Spooner. You, sir, are a hero and a gentleman.

re: #138 BigPapa

Good catch. Still… she was tough. The amount of ordnance necessary to bring her down is surprising.

Her class was very hard to kill. The USS Hornet survived multiple bomb, torpedo, and suicide crash hits at Santa Cruz and was only finally sunk by 24-inch torpedoes from 2 Japanese destroyers. The USS Enterprise was repeatedly damaged, suffering wounds that would have sunk most Japanese carriers, but each time returning to service. A key reason for this was that USN damage control for carriers was much better than IJN damage control. The sole Japanese exception to this was the Shokaku, which twice survived bomb hits that would have sunk other vessels.

Well, we only look at tcot on our own gumption. We don’t have to.

Earthquake report, breaking news, ezra klein, lizardoid. etc etc. are good to follow. Try it!

No, I get Twitter when it comes to watching single people and the things they tweet. A news source you trust, a person you like, a laugh-a-day account that posts funny shit.. that’s all cool. When you start trying to glean knowledge from the general trends, though, that’s when Twitter starts embodying everything bad about the internet.. giving a voice to any idiot with a keyboard, and allowing bullshit to spread like wildfire.

Oh I agree. I don’t look that often.

Actually, today was a depressing news day. I’m watching Rescue Me which is fucking hilarious thank g-d!!

Kamikaze pilots at The Battle of Midway? I don’t think so. Not until much later in the war when the Japanese were desperate.

So you praise twitter trends as a tool to secure democracy, knowing full well that trends like #tcot are full of absolute hate and bullshit. Interesting.

Sigh.

Twitter. It’s a medium.

re: #140 WindUpBird

Also, you might recall Iranians that used it, you know, for democracy and stuff.

it’s fun to dismiss Twitter, after all it has a funny name, but people are using it. It is the internet. Ask someone in Iran whose sibling was beaten in the streets during the election if they’re just using it to swap shampoo gossip

That’s true, but aside from these occasional cutting-edge uses, it is sort of stupid.

#tcot should be an embarrassment to Conservatives. It’s vile.

I suspect that most actual conservatives have no idea it exists, and they’re probably much happier that way.

True, but at least one Japanese pilot attempted a suicide crash against the Yorktown when that plane was too damaged to get home.

I think what happens is that when an attacking plane gets shot down, it just keeps coming down at the ship, so it looks like a kamikaze. I’ve also heard of times when a pilot would try to crash a damaged plane into a ship.

One other interesting detail about Midway: The one successful suicide attack of the battle was made by an American named R.E. Fleming. After his SBD Dauntless dive bombers was fatally damaged by Japanese AA, he crashed it into the Japanese cruiser Mikuma, causing damage that left Mikuma dead in the water and lead to her sinking.

Someday, somewhere, someone is going to have had enough of that piece of human garbage Breitbart and beat the unholy crap out of him. And the schaedenfreude will be strong.

Charles said it best - I don’t know how Breitbart sleeps at night. What a pathetic coward.

“I didn’t think I was ever going to get back.”

Much what my dad said too, until we used the A bomb.

He and his pilot buddies thought their chances of surviving the invasion of the Japanese home islands were very slim.

Hats off to all the vets surviving today!

Twitter, with its tiny format, encourages tiny minds to have a tiny view of the world.

161 lostlakehiker  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 7:28:36am

Breitbart is claiming that Spooner isn’t really Spooner? He’s somebody else, and the real Spooner wouldn’t say that? That’s deranged. But the other possibility is that Breitbart is just throwing around the word “plant”, and he only seriously means the word “liar”.

You call a man a liar, you’re slandering him unless the charge is supported by evidence. But all the evidence here will be a matter of court record. Breitbart must be counting on Spooner’s being too poor to vindicate his reputation in court.

That could be so. Which leaves it up to the media, which in a way includes us.

re: #54 BigPapa

I don’t think the Yorktown was sunk, she was scuttled.

That is correct: they thought they had a new carrier in their sights and attacked with full force.

BTW, the Japanese did not sink her: she was scuttled.

Actually, what finally put the Yorktown down was a couple of torpedos from a Japanese submarine, I-168. The destroyer Hamman caught one as well, broke in two and many of her crew were killed when the Hamman’s depth charges exploded.

The Yorktown rolled over and sank the next morning.

I found the original article a bit over the top. The Kamikaze Corp wasn’t instituted for another two years. The leader of the planes attacking the Yorktown did deliberately crash his plane into her, but he was going down anyway.

Also, the Yorktown had a crew of over 2,000 and most of them escaped.

I wish the media would fact check a little more.

However, a big thumbs up to Mr. Spooner both for his service to his country and his service to his friend.

Maybe the NAACP and others shouldn’t so quick to condemn people without hearing all sides of the issue?

I agree with Sherrod that racism should end. The first step in overcoming your own racism is acknowledging that it exists.

re: #97 LudwigVanQuixote

Yes, but it will be a day late and a dollar short. The truth is already very much out there in high profile. I just wish someone who will be remembered for saying something about this, like the president - or at least a high ranking Dem - would nail Fox and Breitbart and Beck to the wall on this and go on the offensive.

Unfortunately, facts aren’t nearly as useful as we believe.

I call this phenomena “Information Disease”. Note: This link goes to a site not safe for work.

Her speech is an inspirational call to end racism, not a boast about refusing help to white farmers — as Andrew Breitbart portrayed it.

Beautifully said. And I also love how Ms. Sherrod says that it’s not that race shouldn’t exist but that it shouldn’t matter. Everyone should be ashamed for rushing to conclusions without looking at the facts. What happened to innocent til proven guilty? And Breitbart—that lying, fact-twisting, slandering scumbag—deserves a special place in hell for what he did. It’s an awful thing when someone is slandered, but that Ms. Sherrod’s words were completely twisted into something that is so diametrically opposite to what she was actually saying is just astounding.
