At least she gets it right. At some point though someone with actual power from the Dems needs to say these things and fight back.

Maddow was brilliant last night, and that’s reflected in the way Fox has avoided the topic altogether today…except Glenn Beck, who has been doing some kind of carny routine about how the whole thing is about attacking him.

I find myself not only on the same side as Maddow (shriek!)… but potentially, possible voting blue next presidential election. I’ve voted 100% red for a real long time.

The right wing’s hair-trigger reaction to this bogus story, and eagerness to point out “reverse racism” (a term with a bigoted overtone, in and of itself) really shows what’s really going on inside their id.

Their true feelings about race are out in the open for everyone to see, but sadly, few people will look.

This was a golden opportunity. It was a simple to understand, and obvious to even the most stupid, smear against a good woman, who saved the family farm of an aging Midway veteran by overcoming her trauma after white folks murdered her father.

Hollywood could not have come up with a better script. There are no complicated moving parts. Everyone and their uncle can see this for what it is.

Fox, the Teabags and the GOP could have been dealt a blow that would resonate until November. Yet the WH whimped out.

The problem with “pressing the attack” is that the agency believed Breitbarth

Like LVQ says, yes they were fooled, but if they press the attack they can be the people who speak truth to power and get to the bottom of the issue.

If they just let it drop they’ll see like they’re trying to cover up their weakness rather than openly admitting to it and trying to make sure it never happens again.

No, they were stupid, but not ‘just as culpable as he is’.

Now:

Breitbart lies. I think that anyone believing anything out of his mouth without substantial fact-checking should probably have their head examined. Can we please remember this next time he attacks some juicy liberal target, and people around here come a-flocking to believe him?

But every time he comes up with a new one, there are still people on this site who are willing to give a proven liar the benefit of the doubt.

I think you guys are being generous. At a minimum the WH and the USDA jumped the gun. Calling her 3 or 4 times and asking her to pull over to the side of the road so she could resign reeks of panic. They acted pathetic and weak in the face of “your going to be on Beck!”. The quickness with which they tossed her under the bus is pretty disturbing.

Context again. The USDA is a political minefield, dogged by court cases for discrimination against black farmers in the past. The class-action suit brought by black farmers in the 90’s is still not completely resolved at this point.

They were overly sensitive to anything that might set that process back.

I mean, I could consider the Secretary of Agriculture to be part of the White House. However, the more standard meaning of that is Obama and his staff.

I also think that bureaucrats in a situation like this, when they need to apply pressure to someone who isn’t really going along with it, just might say things like, “this comes down from the White House.” Whether it did or not.

I believe Sherrod was told that. I don’t believe the person who told her that, however, was necessarily telling the whole truth.

Their crime? The aide called Sarah Palin’s moronic mosque-paranoia out on Twitter. And the mayor stood by the aide’s right to speak her mind.

Pamz: “How dare Bloomberg sanction such disrespect for a former vice-presidential candidate and Governor?”

So, in Geller’s world, being a loser and quitter in the past tense and a full-time idiot in the present earns respect.

Given her history, and her family’s history in the civil rights movement, I think there’s a good chance Obama would have known who she was ahead of time while Vilsack didn’t know her from Adam. By the time it got to Obama, laser beams could have been coming out of his eyes.

83 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 3:19:03pm

I am personally not convinced that the White House, or some organ of it, was not involved.

I can not imagine that after the NAACP statement against the teabags, that no one on the WH staff was not tasked to look for something like this from the right and instantly respond.

Now was this some staffer? Most likely.

Was it Obama himself? Unlikely.

Was Obama given a 30 second brief on this and after that, he accepted the recommendation of his people, who were then jumping the gun? Likely.

That said, the White House should simply have whatever internal lesson about jumping the gun and the world of CYA before thought. Externally, this should not be allowed to distract from the real sins of Breitbart and Fox. That is easily accomplished by admitting error and making it right.

Folks, to all of you who are figuring out ways this really reflects badly on Obama’s administration, please imagine it the other way around, with an asshole lefty pundit lying and getting someone fired with accusations of racism.

How would you react to suggestions that the real take-away from that was that a Republican president had failed to properly manage the HR department at the USDA?

Sounds like dumb-ass partisan crap, no?

Yes, it does.

I am personally not convinced that the White House, or some organ of it, was not involved.

Meanwhile, in a blunt example of the theater of the absurd, Yeller Geller is taking on an aide to Mayor Bloomberg, and Bloomberg himself.

Oh, if one could die of an irony overdose, this would be it for me.

99 researchok  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 3:24:54pm

For the most part, Maddow makes her point quite succinctly.

Her strongest point is when she questions FOX News as a credible news source. That is because FOX News ran with the story without having all the facts at their disposal and without having verified Breibart’s content.

Maddow mitigates her own efforts when she implies that FOX News had the entire tape and deliberately decided to smear the unfortunate Ms Sherrod. That is simply not the case. Shepard Smith showed his journalistic cojones by refusing to run with the story until the contents and context of the Sherrod speech could be verified (he pointedly smacked Breitbart in the process. Good on him). Rick Sanchez of CNN did the same thing, refusing to air the story until more was known.

FOX News is guilty of hyping the case, no question, but their guilt is primarily an example of journalistic failure. Consequently, they deserve all the crap that is thrown at them. That said, professional meltdown notwithstanding, FOX only ran the footage the asshole Breibart provided them. They were not in possession of the entire tape and did not deliberately selectively excerpt provocative remarks.

Lastly, FOX News was in good company in asking about the WH and the resignation. CNN did the same. Maddow’s points are all valid, accurate and worthy of further discussion. She did not have to shade the issue.

I am not defending FOX News in this matter because their behavior is indefensible. Period.

A noted blogger once remarked, ““I don’t know why things can’t just stay on the level of the factual,” he said. “I don’t know why everything has to have a slant. I mean, The New York Times has a slant, and in the past I’ve called them out for that…I miss the days of Walter Cronkite.”

There’s also a lot of grey zone when people refer to the White House. People will say that Vilsak is the White House because he’s in the Cabinet. They want to link things that don’t always follow. To whit, Hannity’s whining that a “Obama Administration appointee” stepped down because she’s a racist (I’m abbreviating his ridiculous hystrionics). Well yes, she’s a political appointee, but I doubt Obama personally is overseeing random members of regional USDA offices. Still imagine that if Obama was notified, the conversation went like this:

For those of you in management - if you ever get faced with an explosive charge against an employee and seemingly conclusive evidence you should still suspend before you fire.

Firing is not something you can call back or revoke, a suspension is. A suspension gives you time to get all sides and all evidence before you decide, so even if the violation in question calls for immediate termination you should still suspend first to give yourself room and to be fair.

Just a hint from someone with 37 yrs experience…

For certain, he must be sensitive to race issues because of the wretched environment he finds himself in. Because of that, I am certain that some staffer or team of staffers looks out for stuff like this. These people are likely relatively low on the food chain.

re: #83 LudwigVanQuixote

I think that is exactly right, it think it would be naive to believe that something of this nature, something that was bound to get unimaginable press coverage, went through without anyone at the WH knowing.

I’m not equating their culpability with Breitbart, I’m just suggesting that no one in this entire episode should get a pass.

There’s some other context to this one, too — the USDA has been caught up in huge scandals over racial bias for years. When Vilsack said their policy was “zero tolerance” for racism, I’m sure he was telling the truth. When bureaucrats get in a zero tolerance mode, watch out.

That is a great point, Charles. Zero tolerance means shoot first, ask questions later.

That said, Vilsak strikes me as the most cowardly and CYA sort of career bureaucrat. It is almost as ridiculous for me to believe that he didn’t call someone low on the food chain at the white house in a panic as itis for me to believe Obama was in it from the get go.

The most likely scenario, is Vilsak calls WH toadie. Toadie over-reacts or even just agrees with Vilsak.

Things blow up from there.

Some time later Obama gets 30 sec briefing.

Yeah. What I found impressive in this episode was the power that Fox News/Breitbart hold over at least a part of the Executive. Someone entered panic mode over this.

Can you imagine this kind of reaction to the occasionally much more reasonable criticisms from the left of Obama?

I agree. Much like the school girl suspended for having an advil.

It is the same mentality.

It is equally likely that he simply hyperventilated and never spoke with anyone at the WH. I think there is good reason to suspect that scenario as well. In truth we will never find out the little machinations that went on.

The things that are certain though are that:

1. That is not the real story. The real story is a smear by Breitbart and Fox against a very noble and good woman.

2. The wretched race baiting that brought that smear on.

3. Obama almost certainly did not make the call to fire her.

4. Obama almost certainly did not know her from Adam.

5. Now that this has happened, Obama will be attacked for it none the less, and he should use this as an opportunity to stick it to the bad guys who deserve it and address the wretched and cancerous racism infecting America and promoted by Fox.

I just read she has been offered a civil rights job. Why not her job she had? Is there some showstopper (non ego based) about her just simply returning to work if she wants to? And now we know Vilsack lied to her about the White House demanding her resignation. I’d like to see him admonished for that.

From NPR
We are apparently nearing the all’s-well-that-ends-well part of the Shirley Sherrod saga.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday that he apologized personally to Sherrod, the former USDA official who he forced out Monday because of a misunderstanding of racial comments she made in a speech in March.
A clearly chastened Vilsack said he talked with Sherrod by phone and offered an apology which she accepted.
He added that he also asked Sherrod to consider taking a new post at the USDA that would make use of her unique set of experiences, including her being one of hundreds of black farmers who received a settlement from the agency because of past racial discrimination.

And while we are at it, stupid words that make no sense like Tranzi… I know it comes from transnational progressive, but those words are poorly defined to begin with.

I mean transnational has meaning and so does progressive - but in that combination and used as a slur make no sense at all.

re: #203 LudwigVanQuixote

I am absolutely with you on that.

Added to the list of words that should never be used, unles used literally and in context are:

Torture
Holocaust
Genocide
Pedophile
Murder

I should of said I would prefer if writers didn’t use those terms for color. Jon Stewart had a piece about how bloggers and writers reported the criticism he had with Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow, I think about Sen. Brown. The writers use words that refereed to the practice of ripping someones guts out while they are still alive, in the title it was over the top to get attention. I don’t think Charles needs to do that because of the format of the blog.

Side note, i also don’t like when they call the Twin Towers, Ground Zero. DC was also hit and Ground Zero should only be used in reference to a Nuclear FUCK Bomb. Cause those are nuclear.

The Denial is strong. It remains a possibility that Cook was telling the truth, and that Vilsack is taking the fall for the team.

I don’t buy it and I’ll tell you why.

Cook had to know this was going to get a lot of attention. Why would she not parse her words and say exactly what she meant? Further, Sherrod claims to know this woman. She believes Cook was being accurate.

He is the man in charge. He intentionally ran for this position knowing full well what it entailed. Why are you so quick to believe this president is completely different than our last presidents when it comes to command and control of the white house? If he actually didn’t know this was about to happen then he needs to start firing people today.

Oh, he probably knew something about it. But this doesn’t mean that he handled the episode himself — it sort of defies belief that Obama (or any other President) has gone personally through the video, transcripts, etc and decided to fire Sherrod himself. He most likely left it up to Vilsack, which is what Vilsack his saying anyway.

If Vilsack got read the Riot Act for anything, it was his “I’m not sorry for doing what I thought was necessary” statement to the press yesterday. He would have done more to silence accusations of “racism” within the USDA by waiting until the truth of this matter had come out and trumpeting that than by pulling such a blatant “CYA” stunt as saying that it didn’t matter how the whole thing panned out, his decision was “justified” by a zero-tolerance strategy.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

Andrew Brietbart is the source of this entire smear campaign, and should be held legally, and civilly responsible for it.

Shirley Sherrod should, in my opinion, pursue a libel case against Mr. Brietbart because of the fact that it meets all three criteria of libelous conduct.
1. Knowingly published false story.
2. Caused damage to subject of that false story.
3. Published this story with malice (as retaliation against NAACP).

Given the national exposure to this story, I think there’s more than a few attorneys who would pursue this on a Pro Bono basis.

I know I might take negative karma for saying as much, but what this was was a calculated effort to put “uppity” black folk in “their place.” It was Andrew Breitbart, with assistance from rightwing bloggers and Faux News, stoking up racist sentiment as a way of silencing the NAACP for daring to speak out against “their betters” in the Tea Party movement. You don’t have to kill somebody to ruin their life, and this incident certainly was orchestrated to that end.

280 Summer Seale  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 4:27:02pm

I think the term “lynching” is definitely appropriate. I don’t usually like hyperbole, but the term definitely fits.

No, nobody was actually hung by a tree branch, but it was the 21st century equivalent. Usually, lynchings occurred when a black man was accused of doing something wrong under entirely fabricated circumstances - say, walking a white woman across the street, etc…. and then accused of having touched her inappropriately, or the like. The commonality is that somebody who is black, who recounted a story trying to demonstrate how she was being helpful as a lesson to others, had her words taken and twisted around to “prove” the exact contrary, and accused falsely on those grounds with rumor and hype.

In the end, it was a lynching and it wasn’t pretty. And I think people have to realize that yes, this story was about racism - the good old fashioned kind where falsely aggrieved parties, who were actually not involved at all, made up their feelings of being slighted based on no evidence whatsoever, simply to “show the black people” that they’re just not going to take the NAACP being “uppity” about their stupid, racist, homophobic, insane Tea Party.

White House not actually involved, apparently, someone may have used “from the White House” as some sort of shorthand.

When I worked for State Government here, a reference to “the Governor’s Office”, was always a reference to someone who worked in some section or the other of the Governor’s Office.

If you spoke to the Governor himself, you said “The Governor”.

I suspect the same sort of thing applies here - “the WH” is used as shorthand not necessarily meaning the President (who would be referred to as The President), but to someone who works in or around the White House.

Speaking of racism, this outburst by Savage over at the village needs to be seen to be believed. Warning, this is vile. Utterly vile. It is in response to an Hispanic woman who counter-protested against the vile arizona law.

This is the naked face of hatred on the right.

Those are threats, and should be reported to the authorities by as many people as possible.

What I could really wish for Glenn Beck is that he would wake up like Gregor Samsa tomorrow, only instead of being a cockroach, he finds himself transformed into a gay black woman.

Well, the patron saint of social justice is St. Martin de Porres.

:p Portuguese sometimes betrays me in relatively uncommon words— it’s “turbante” in Portuguese.

By the way Cato, I spelled “Buda” instead of “Buddha” for the same reason.

I took Portuguese in high school, sort of. The German teacher wanted to teach it, but couldn’t get a whole class together, so we met twice a week for one semester. I think her Portuguese was better than her German, actually. But my German is better than my Portuguese, which isn’t saying much.

Glenn Beck attempts to stoke outrage over Six Flag’s annual Muslim Family Day, which takes place at the end of Ramadan:
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com…]

From a Glenn Beck e-mail blast:

At the very minimum this is one of the worst PR moves of all time. A Six Flags amusement park is having a ‘Muslim Family Day’ which if that’s what they want to do, great! BUT they’ve decided to have the festivities on September 12th - of ALL days, THIS is the one they pick? What in the world were they thinking?

From Beck’s Radio show:

BECK: I can’t imagine that in 1948, they would have had ‘Japanese Day’ at the water park on December 8th.

The history of Muslim Family Day:

History of the Event:

This event was first held at Six Flags Great Adventure, NJ, in September 2000. The event was immediately a huge success. The tragic events of 9/11 that resulted in the loss of thousands of innocent lives, also affected this event directly. The chief organizer, Tariq Amanullah, who worked on the 96th floor of WTC, Tower 2, passed away. The team was unable to come together again till year 2004, when the event came back bigger than ever before.

461 Walter L. Newton  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 5:44:25pm

I’ve been asleep most of today, up once to do a short chore, working nights this week to cover for the overnight cashier on vacation, so, not attending to world affairs in the same “time zone” as others, so if I am covering ground already trod, sorry…

Watching AB in various videos over the last two days brings me to the conclusion that this man is mentally ill. He looks for trouble, when he finds it, he will flip-flop, lie, provoke… anything to keep the story going, and making sure the attention stays on him.

In so many words he admits to that modus operandi in one of the videos, where he is making a faux apology to Ms. Sherrod, claiming over and over that he never expected that she would loose her job, become the center of the controversy… this was a few hours after he pats himself on the back for being the one to bring all this outrage tot he publics attention.

IN the corse of 24 to 48 hours, he has held every position he could on this topic, each and every flip-flop designed to move the attention back to him.

He’s creating his own little world of outrage, do this enough times and he can refer back to himself over and over, having plausible deniability, because he’s taking ever despicable position available, at a point, you he can’t separate truth from his little Andrew World.

Problem is, people eat this up, they like having a village idiot that they can agree with, and then disagree with if necessary. It extends them that same veneer of plausible deniability that Andrew has spent so much time creating.

The sick feeding the sick and puking it up on the rest of us. Too bad Charles doesn’t have a magic button to ban Andrew Breirtbart.

I hope Sherrod’s main point from her speech doesn’t get lost in all the fuss..

“It’s not about race. It’s about those who have and those who do not.” In other words, Sherrod tries to impart to her audience that those who believe America - and the South in particular - is divided because of race miss the point. It’s divided, she says, because of income.

I agree with that point. Good for her for speaking the truth.

471 Nimed  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 5:59:41pm

Quick and fairly obvious thoughts on this episode:

Sherrod was incredibly lucky. The Spooners were good folks, grateful for how the farm case went, and still alive after 23 years. Their testimony was very important — just the unedited tape would probably not have been sufficient to rehabilitate Sherrod so completely.

Breitbart was really unlucky, OTOH. Just look at the biographical details of these people (that he obviously didn’t bother to check). Sherrod helped the Spooners and overcame racism in spite of the fact that her father was killed by a Klansman, and “planted” farmer Roger Spooner is a veteran of the Battle of Midway.

Without the Universe having conspired to so thoroughly fuck Breitbart on this case, Sherrod’s life would have be destroyed. If we had a healthy media environment, he should have been finished after this.

Severe case of iceweasel derangement syndrome. Sometimes its a long and lingering illness, sometimes it’s a short one, but it always ends the same way - a painful desvent into swirling insanity.

Still don’t know what his real underlying problem with us was. (Neither does iceweasel - who wasn’t even present when he lost it again upthread fot the last time).

Unless the headache came from alcohol, in which case the old “hair of the dog” rule applies.

Avoid hangovers, stay drunk.

Everyone knows you’re supposed to go from liquor to adrenal gland extract, and not the other way around.

That’s not so good for the lobster, though.

The whole problem with this thing IMO is the administration’s lack of experience… they react too quickly to a perceived threat. I am not sure I trust them in a military kinda way.

Might want to ask the Somali pirates about that. Oh wait, they are dead.

Unlike Bush with Saddam Hussein, eh? Or McCains, “We are all Georgians now”.
Get a grip.

You know, I’ll bet it will be a cold day in hell before Sherrod feels that it’s worth while to conjole a gathering of naacp’ers in to not giving into their racist tendencies when dealing with whites from a position of power.

A sincere f*** you from me and hopefully the rest of LGF for your belief that the NAACP which was founded at a time when blacks were routinely being lynched is the real racists in this day and age.

Wow Jamesfirecat, you figured it out.
Perhaps the meetings you attend feature speakers who lecture the crowd about why they should not be a racist. Love how many of them were nodding and practically giving the amen when Sherrod describes how she did not want to help the white guy.
Most people I know would be insulted by a speaker giving a similar speach.

Where does a white have to go to hear a similar speech? recovering clansmen anonymous..

Oh hay what’s in this thread, it’s Solarbear! Hi Solarbear!

So are you…

A) a sockpuppet of some banned poster trying to get the last word in a dead thread

B) a mindless talking point stenographer who gets misty-eyed at the opening music to Hannity’s radio show?

C) or just a good old fashioned Mom-and-Apple Pie American racist?

I guess you can read those peoples minds just by their facial expressions? Thus it allows you to know that it was smug smiles and the leers of those who were doubtlessly reflecting upon how they had been given and taken chances to screw with whity? Rather than I don’t know, the more quiet self reflective laugh of someone who has found themselves in a similar situation or faced a simliar problem? I guess its wrong that a group like the NAACP should be filled with people who respect and have stories of how they overcame their racism.

Maybe they’d be better off if they were filled with people who loudly protested at the drop of a hat that THEY AREN’T RACIST no matter what they do or say.

re: #493 solarbear

I guess neither Windbird nor the firecat want to deal with the fact that Sherrod was actually cojoling naacp’ers into not acting upon their racial impulses.

Sherrod is a racist, the naacp is a racist organization along with pretty much every other group which advocates exclusively for black people.
Jamesfirecat is a racist and so is Windbird.

Anyone who expects less and has lower standards for black people simply because they are black is a racist. Most liberals are racist. You make me sick to my stomach.

Wow I can’t believe you think that the moral of her story is that she’s racist or that she was trying to convince others to act in a racist manner.

I can’t believe that you jump that most liberals are racist.

But thank you, thank you for saving me the difficulty of trying to have to honestly debate you this late at night.

re: #496 solarbear

James, you are pretty much a garden variety idiot.
You don’t want a debate because you will lose.
I mean really, look at what you’ve written so far.. f—- You, then some jabber about me reading minds following quickly by you attempting to read minds followed quickly with an argument about something that you imagined I said regarding Sherrod convincing others to be racist which is practically the opposite of what I actually said.
So I guess you have a special firecat cut of the tape where Sherrod explains in advance that there is a point of redemption at the end of her “when I used to screw whitey story” This would of course explain all the naacp’ers right-ons observed on video when she describes giving the cracker the shaft.

James, please stfu if you don’t have anything substanitive to say.
You need to stop being a racist…seriously.

Far greater minds than mine inhabit LGF, I’d suggest you stick to lurking and posting only at the end of dead threads late at night if you don’t want to meet them…

LMFAO!

You just keep plowing reality aside to make way for the “facts as you know them to be,” hell if it makes you happy who am I to try to contradict you?

Still I just have to at least mention that you seem to have a extremely well developed case of confirmation bias, perhaps you should see a doctor? (or a mental health specialist?) :p
