Haha okay!

This is a whole different beast than what we were talking about last thread, though. Not sure there's any valid method for comparison.

Don't look at the video, just listen

I DEFY you to tell me that you would know that it's a live performance, not in a studio where they can digitally merge the two

Very different cultures, I guess.

This is from Judy Henske's album that ended the 60-70s folk movement,
Farewell Aldebaran. It was produced by Zappa.

Rapture

Divers asleep,
Dream of the deep
Closing over their heads;
Lost comrades gather
By their beds.
Her voice in the drowned bells
Was tolling:
“In rapture we died,
Waves o’er us rolling.”

Pilots beware
The perilous air,
Streaming under your wings.
She will betray you
As she sings;
Her voice in the hot sun
Is calling:
“In rapture you die,
Flying and falling.”

Lovers who lie
Beneath the night sky,
Neither speak nor hear
In the perfect stillness.
She is near.
Her voice in the heart’s blood
Comes roaring:
“In rapture they die,
Diving and soaring.”

Been looking at some reports of local politics from around the country and various races (for governors, AG, etc) especially for Republican nominations.

I'm struck by how very strident the "right" has become, in that even self-avowed "conservative Christian" candidates are no longer "conservative" enough! (Perhaps later I'll have time to write up a Page entry about some of them.)

For example, there is one case where a woman who describes herself as a pro-life Christian, who's opinion on abortion - that it should only be allowed in cases of rape and incest - is not hard core enough! Her opponent "opposes abortion in all instances."

Wow.

Wow.

Best case scenario, tacking so far to the right blows up spectacularly in the GOP's faces, allowing party moderates to sweep the decks and return sanity to the ranks.

Worst case scenario, they make out like bandits come November, see the successes as a "mandate," and drive the moderates either out of the party entirely or into isolation while they work to frak things up even worse.

My wildest dream right now would be for the Republican vote to get so splintered between people going for even farther-Right fringe third parties and liberal/moderates either abstaining or voting Democrat, that the GOP fails to do better than 1/3 of the seats they seem to believe are theirs to lose. I don't hold out any hope that the GOP will not succeed in taking a fair number of seats, but the fewer they win, the better the message to the leadership will be.

From your link:

As the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan submits his report to the U.N. General Assembly this week, Human Rights Watch urged the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights to conduct a thorough investigation into the massacre and the full range of abuses that took place in Mazar-i Sharif. The Taliban apparently carried out the massacre in revenge for the killing of thousands of its own soldiers in Mazar in 1997. Human Rights Watch urged the United Nations to investigate that atrocity as well.

Civil wars are particularly ugly.

Yet "Talibanic" doesn't imply (current) civil war atrocities.

The Taliban proper is a rather late development in Afghanistan. Yet they arose out of the very strongly anti-modern religious groups of the area, that integrated local tribal codes into a very strict form of Islam.

That is what I meant by "Talibanic", and adjective which means strongly anti-modern that desires to enforce primitive religious codes and tribalism.

Which, I maintain, describes quite well what is happening in the populist/activist circles pushing on the GOP.

Someday I need to read them. I've tried Ender's Game a couple of times but don't ever get hooked by it. If I could slog through, oh, The Cat Who Walks Through Walls or Friday, you'd think I can complete something like that.

Ah, that's unusual. Ender's Game is pretty much the book version of an action movie. Maybe you're put off by that sort of thing?

This objection comes up a lot, i.e. "you can't compare the religious right to the taliban because they don't go around cutting off people's heads." To that, I'm tempted to offer the following example: what would you think of a man who says, "sure, I slap my wife around and won't let her leave the house without permission...but I've never broken her limbs!"

Would you say that man is *not* abusive, simply because his actions may not be as gory as someone else's?

We don't have no songs :(

Christians have their hymns and pages,
Hava Nagila’s for the Jews,
Baptists have the rock of ages,
Atheists just sing the blues.

Romantics play Claire de Lune,
Born agains sing He is risen,
But no one ever wrote a tune,
For godless existentialism.

For Atheists,
There’s no good news,
They’ll never sing a song of faith.

For atheists,
They have a rule,
The “he” is always lowercase.
The “he” is always lowercase.

Some folks sing a Bach cantata,
Lutherans get Christmas trees,
Atheist songs add up to nada,
But they do have Sundays free.

Pentecostalists sing they sing to heaven,
Coptics have the books of scrolls,
Numerologists can count to seven,
Atheists have rock and roll.

Catholics dress up for Mass,
And listen to, Gregorian chants.

Atheists just take a pass,
Watch football in their underpants.
Watch football in their underpants.

Atheists, Atheists, Atheists,
Don’t have no songs!

Perhaps that's why so many of his most important battles are fixed position assaults: Gondolin in the First Age (a story he wrote before WWI had ended), The siege of the Barad-Dur in the Second Age, and both Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith in the Third Age. That sort of assault was a type of fighting Tolkin knew personally.

Le Testament: Epitaph et Rondeau

Epitaph
Here there lies, and sleeps in the grave,
One whom Love killed with his scorn,
A poor little scholar in every way,
He was named François Villon.
He never reaped a morsel of corn:
Willed all away, as all men know:
Bed, table, and basket all are gone.
Gallants, now sing his song below:

Rondeau
Oh, grant him now eternal peace,
Lord, and everlasting light,
He wasn’t worth a candle bright,
Nor even a sprig of parsley.
Of eyebrows, hair, and beard he’s free,
A turnip scraped with a spade, all right:
Oh, grant him now eternal peace.

Exiled with strict severity,
Rapped behind with a spade, despite
It all he cried: ‘Appeal, for me!’
– Which wasn’t the height of subtlety.
Oh, grant him now eternal peace.

True, but all the four main Hobbits are Ordinary Heroes in the book. Frodo most of all, but Sam, Merry, and Pippen all show great courage (and wisdom from Sam and Merry) in fighting against the evil of Sauron. Tolkin was clearly impressed by the valor ordinary British soldiers showed in the World Wars.

The original Star Wars trilogy is fine.

The second one is contemptible, and I don't just mean because the writing is bad.

Thats why he can resist the temptation of the ring tho'.

He knows his place.

There's a point to be made there. The Rings of Power were designed to use the ambitions of who ever kept them in order to corrupt them and turn them to Sauron's service. Sam's lack of ambition helps him resist Sauron's lure, as does his innate goodness.

Speaking of hobbits and Fantasy/SF, COMICON is going strong here in SD. Walking around today (not in downtown) saw several groups of young people with badges and huge bags filled with goodies.

It's amazing how large COMICON has grown, from the rather small cultish origins.

re: #158 Nimed

ahahahah. Well, I love LeGuin, but I'd say she has probably put more thought into class conflict in her novels than any other major sci-fi/fantasy author.

Which I have to admit, I love. It's not Tolkien and his ilk who bother me, it's the imitators (who didn't grow up in nearly as class-structured a society as did JRR), and who still end up writing these pathetic full-of-holes worlds where they think you can have an hereditary monarchy and a meritocracy operating together.

re: #167 Nimed

As I remember it, it says so specifically.

The palintir, which was the specific property of the kings was sitting around in Isengard. In his pride, Saruman couldn't leave it alone, and got caught by Sauron, in the process deeply corrupting him. When aragorn uses the same stone he isn't trapped specifically because, as the rightful king, he has the right to use it.

Might be in the appendices, or some other source material, but Tolkien wrote it.

New York Comic con has been getting bigger since they started three or four years ago, but they keep changing the dates. Like it was in April last year (which was beautiful) and it'll be in October this year. That doesn't help.

Women (except Eowyn) are barely people in Tolkien.

She was Aragorn's reward for making all the right choices.

re: #157 JasonA

Explain Eowyn for me. There is a woman who certainly doesn't accept her "place," and slays the Witch-King because of it.

She is a noblewoman, though. Tolkien could probably live with strong noblewomen, since English History has quite a few examples.

Not really. As the Granddaughter of Earendil, it was her choice to decide which of the two races she would be judged under. As far as I know, of all those given that choice only Earendil himself and Elrond chose to be counted among the the Elves, all the rest (including Elrond's children) chose mortality.

Once read a screamingly funny fanfic which takes place after LoTR. Arwen has married Aragorn, but they're having problems. First, it turns out that elves don't do the nasty until they've known you for a while, and just having been married for a few years does not count. Aragorn is starting to get pressure about an heir.

Secondly, Arwen has developed intense phobias about dying, and is padding everything to make it safer. At one point she throws a screaming fit, and Aragorn says sadly, "Don't mind her. She's just mad because she's slowly dying."

But one of Tolkien's issues was how industrialization had and was wrecking a stable and idealized social set-up. Industrialized war (WW1) and the idealized agrarian English countryside with the squires of the minor nobility and villages destroyed by the populace uping and leaving for the dirty industrialized cities for work.

I got the full story about my neighbor, and it was a bit more complicated than first reported, but odd all the same.
She apparently had blocked arteries, some heart problems, and fluid in her lungs; sounds something like congestive heart failure, or something.

She passed out over the weekend at a friend's house, ended up at the ER, had an EKG, they sent her home. She worked Monday & Tuesday, walked the dog Tuesday afternoon, came home short of breath, went to ER, died Wed morning.

I can't help but wonder if she had symptoms prior to this and just ignored them.

Ok, so that fits. And Sam is a hero, yes, but what are his greatest qualities? He is very humble and completely loyal to Frodo. Pretty much what you want in a servant. Being a commoner, he is also not very clever. He even is shorter than Frodo, for crying out loud!

Sam is unique in being the only person to ever voluntarily surrender the ring without a fight.

Not blindly loyal, though. He never trusts Gollum, no matter how much Frodo might. And just when Frodo's desire is to just give up, Sam picks him up and carries him on the last leg of their journey. There's a lot of friendship going on here, which I think is being confused with a master/servant relationship a bit.

Elves can be strangely apathetic at times. They had to write in their arrival at Helm's Deep in the movie just to make it a little more interesting. That never happens in the books.

I agree that they are great friends. His suspicion of Gollum is just an expression of his loyalty for Frodo, though. It really doesn't amount to a subversion of their relationship. What character in LOTR is comparable to the resourceful Petyr Baelish, or Varys, or Sandor Clegane? Also, consider the number of clueless fuck-ups among the nobility in ASoIaF. Now that you mention it, let me retcon that like a good geek should. My theory is that Elrond was addicted to Vilya, supposedly the most powerful of the Three Elvish Rings, and was so eager to feed that addiction that he put it back on immediately once the One Ring was cut from Sauron's hand. Once Isuldur took possession of it Elrond was pwned by its dominance over all rings of power.

The Elves were less vulnerable to the lure of the Rings of Power than Humans, as I remember it.

Someone with a strong will possessing the One can dominate them, because the Three were made with knowledge provided by Sauron, but without his direct involvement. That's why the Elves immediately removed them once Sauron forged the One and put it on, and why the Three Rings slowly lose power once Sauron and the One Ring are destroyed.

That fits. The ones best able to resist the lure of the Ring are those who are small and wield less power. The One Ring was created to dominate those of great power so it's designed to use their thoughts and desires to bind them to Sauron.

Ugh Donald Douglas-- UGH!

He is also internets famous for being dumber than dirt.

Donald Douglas somehow managed to top himself. [Updated below the fold.]

But honestly, because he’s proven it’s possible to be gainfully employed in academia and functionally illiterate, I can’t even manage a few moments of schadenfreude. Remember that post I wrote yesterday? The one in which I clearly indicated that I’d condensed a thread’s worth of insults into a nonsensical stream of ad hominem?

Donald Douglas not only thinks Jeff Goldstein wrote it, he considers it to be a “deliciously devastating slam.” I’ll take the compliment on its face—the art of collage is an art—but the fact that someone employed by an institution of higher learning found that paragraph compelling is, I think we can all agree, probably the most embarrassing thing someone employed by an institution of higher learning could ever do. The only reasonable response to such a brazen display of idiocy is to take a screen-shot of it and put it on the internet forever

Believe it or not, it gets even more embarrassing from there, check it out. DD responds, hilarity and braincrash continues.

DD=Dumber than Dogshit, Dishonest Dirtbag, and more.

My take on the Helm's Deep elf appearance in the movie was that it was their crediting of the elves doing some fighting in the War of the Ring. In the appendices of the book it is mentioned that the Lothlorien elves did sortie out and destroy an orc army along the river.

Biking etiquette question for you...
So, on a narrow side of a highway, when a biker is passing, is there a "shout out" to be called when passing? To let the pedestrian know there's a bike coming up? Had some close calls, this weekend. No notice from the bikers...

I usually try to say something like "on your left" as I approach someone to pass. Unfortunately, I've seen quite a few people get really bent out of shape by this, even though it's intended to keep them safe. I've even seen people get so pissed off they deliberately cut to the left in response. So I can actually understand why some cyclists might not say anything - sometimes it's safer to just get past as quietly as possible.

Good point. I also think it was to give the defenders and the audience hope that the good guys might win.

Now onto the real Tolkien controversy, exactly how dickish are the wood elves in The Hobbit? First they imprison the Dwarves for weeks on end, then get irresponsibly crunked up on wine, allowing invisible Bilbo to help them escape. Then after a human kills the dragon with an arrow, totally embarrassing the Elves in a sport they fucking invented, they come with an army demanding payment for their hangover.

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong these guys?

The Examiner is not much of a paper, and if you look at the article, you'll see this is being 'reported' by a freelance writer living in San Diego. There's no suggestion of where she's getting her material from in the article, and it's obviously being written up to make what may be a real story at it's core (Would I be surprised to learn that Los Zetas have access to a ranch near Laredo and the FBI is working on it? No.) very dramatic and horrifying.

There may be some kind of story here, but I'm willing to bet that it's less exciting than presented. Also, unless we now consider drug cartels to be governments, this is not an 'act of war'.

Yeah. Nobody pays any attention to Protein Wisdom anymore. In fact none of the so called "war-bloggers" get much attention from either side. They've been mainstreamed into places like Hot Air or Red State where a lot of them ten to congregate. They're stuck with their following and that's about it. No future for them. A dank!

The report, which spread like wildfire among blogs Saturday afternoon, appears to have initially been posted on a blog called Diggers Realm.

The blogger wrote that he got a tip from a San Diego, Calif., minuteman named Jeff Schwilk, who said that the Zetas, former enforcers of the Gulf Cartel, had crossed into the United States and taken over two ranches off Mines Road, about 10 miles northwest of Interstate 35.

Quoting Schwilk, the blogger wrote that there was a standoff between “the unknown size Zeta forces and the U.S. Border Patrol and local law enforcement on two ranches …”

Let six jolly cowboys come carry my coffin
Let six pretty gals come to carry my pall
Throw bunches of roses all over my coffin
Throw roses to deaden the clods as they fall

Oh, beat the drum slowly, and play the fife lowly

Take me to the green valley and lay the earth o'er me

Looks like some gunfire on the Mexico side:

"A staff member with the Laredo Morning Times newspaper indicated the paper has not yet gone live with the story because the Laredo Police Department has made no official confirmation. The latest Associated Press story from the region indicated only prolonged combat on the Mexican side of the border, and quoted Laredo Police spokesman Joe Baeza as saying the violence had not spilled over the border.

"We were getting reports from people who live on the river's edge that they could hear gunfire and explosions from the Mexico side," Baeza told the AP. "We didn't have any incidents on the American side. It's hard for people to understand who don't live here," he added. "They're not Vikings, they're not going to invade us, it doesn't work that way."

Another independent news source, the Cypress Times based in Houston, said the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo had posted a warning to citizens on its website.

"We have received credible reports of widespread violence occurring now between narcotics-trafficking organizations and the Mexican army in Nuevo Laredo," the Consulate's website indicated. "The consulate confirmed that fragmentation grenades were used in the attacks and that suspected drug-gang members had blocked several roads, adding that it advised 'all U.S. citizens in Nuevo Laredo to remain indoors until the security situation improves."

I just left San Antonio heading down to the town of Laredo
Got my mind on the border of Mexico
Gonna stop for a tank off to go at a place called a Purple Sombrero
Got my mind on the border of Mexico
Drinking tequila with young senoritas and listening to the mariaches play pretty songs
The lips of a woman will kiss me good mornin'
The same lips that promised to love me till dawn
I can tell you if you don't know what a peso can do for a gringo
Got my mind on the border of Mexico
Drinking tequila...
Got my mind on the border of Mexico

404 SanFranciscoZionist  Sat, Jul 24, 2010 11:53:28pm

There are even songs about Nuevo Laredo:

In Nuevo Laredo the blue Rio Grande
Was bright in the moonlight as I held her hand
She sang me a love song the whole lovely night
We kissed and kissed and kissed and kissed intil the the morning light
In Nuevo Laredo the moon is aglow in Nuevo Laredo in old Mexico

405 Irenicum  Sat, Jul 24, 2010 11:53:31pm

406 SanFranciscoZionist  Sat, Jul 24, 2010 11:54:28pm

Damn, there are a lot of songs about Laredo!

She met him one night in Laredo just a wild comanchero they say
They told her that he'd been an outlaw and she'd have to send him away
They warned her of toil and of hardships and a life filled with heartaches and tears
Then one day he sent her a message the one she'd been waiting to hear
Meet me tonight in Laredo wait till the moon's hanging low
Meet me tonight in Laredo we'll soon be in old Mexico

This one is called "Laredo". I have no idea why.

Tear your wings off at the spine and tape them to the back of mine
I can fly higher when I'm tired
My 2 hands are scorched from holding this torch
Mind feels like neon all glowing and bent up
You look good on my back like a shark fin
Rectify desensitized
'tis the season to drink poison
Tralala was a badhead girl
Your mind's gone greasy it slides right off me
And all the jaded stars spit black cigars
No truce for you
A spec of something that I knew
Yes I read what you did and I see what you did

411 SanFranciscoZionist  Sun, Jul 25, 2010 12:01:47am

Summer days, where did you go,
You've let me down so bad,
Clouds fill the sky,
Gone is the dream
My happy hunting ground.
Wild buffalo played and I never saw a rainy day.
But it looks like summer days ain't coming back.

March April May, June and July,
You took me for a fall.
Big chief he lie,
Cold wind blows cool, so cold to make you die.
Mountain breeze, ocean bay and I never saw a rainy day.
But it looks like them summer days ain't comming back.

CHORUS
Laredo Tornado,
Adios amigos
What can you do, when your dream world is gone.
And your friends and lovers too.

All right, one more...dang, this town has a lot of songs!

As I was rolling across the Mississippi
I stopped there and I cried
No use for a man to keep a mighty river
All dammed up inside

I jumped bail from the Sweetwater County
Now I'm on the run
On my head is a five number bounty
For a crime I never done

Take this letter to Laredo
To the one I love
Tell her to stay low
Beneath the stars above
Her love is my only alibi
It's for her love I lied
Yeah, yeah, yeah

"Why did Frankie have to pull that trigger?
Why did you have to hide?
The sheriff still thinks I was standing with her
It's for your love I lied."

"Love will make a free man a prisioner
Will make an honest man lie
Love can be tough, love can be tender
It's my only alibi"

Take this Letter to Laredo
To the one I love
Tell her to stay low
Beneath the stars above

Officials know nothing of rumored Zeta standoff on Mines Road

By Nick Georgiou
Laredo Morning Times
Published: Saturday, July 24, 2010 5:38 PM CDT
Local law enforcement was bombarded with calls from across the country Saturday asking about a report that the Zetas had taken over two ranches off Mines Road.

But officials with the Laredo Police Department, Webb County Sheriff’s Department and Border Patrol said they knew nothing about such an incident, while Erik Vasys, an FBI spokesman in San Antonio, said the agency does not comment on rumors.

The blogger wrote that the story was confirmed by anonymous sources at LPD.

But Investigator Jose E. Baeza, LPD spokesman, said he had not heard anything about the incident. Also, an LPD sergeant, who was on duty as a watch commander Saturday afternoon, said she had not heard anything about it either.

At about 4:30 p.m., Maru De La Paz, spokeswoman for Webb County Sheriff’s Office, wrote that the report about Zetas taking over ranches in Laredo is not confirmed.

Oh, two fears are better than one! They've combined them. Seriously when are we going to start calling out these pansy assed people!

I'll just restate the quote from the Police Spokesman of Laredo:

"They're not Vikings, they're not going to invade us, it doesn't work that way."

I'm saving that quote for the future. Geeze.

Hey BHO, if you don’t have the balls to go in and take this place, call in the Texas Rangers and let them do the damn job. Man this guy is a prissy wimp. And now for something completely different.

I do think we have a serious border security problem. I agree that we do need more guards at the border. The Arizona law isn't the answer, and neither is "invasion" hysteria. Instead, we need to acknowledge that we have a problem that involves immigration and corporate interests in such a way that takes advantage of those least able to defend themselves. We're an immigrant nation from the get go, and we need to own that in a way that is manageable.

My two cents.

Another Examiner writer is not happy with Ms. Dvorak:

...a writer for Examiner.com doesn't do any of the other writers on Examiner.com any favors by regurgitating information that they read elsewhere without doing any homework. Lady, I write for Examiner, it's how I make my living, and this kinda crap just makes us all look bad. All the hard work that the rest of us put into checking out sources, verifying facts-- it's all undone by crap like this. Ugh, that's annoying.

Also, to the person that said: "It doesn't matter if it's true or not, it shows that the border patrol needs to be down there, blah, blah, blah": are you effing retarded? I mean, do you even think before you speak? Are you saying that, even if the story is FALSE, then it means that we need border patrol in the area? How does that makes sense? If I told you Martians had landed and were destroying things, and it was obviously a hoax, would that mean we need to send out the National Guard? You're an idiot. Keep your mouth shut.

Has Rep. Myrick provided one shred of evidence that there is even one Iranian with a jihadi tattoo pretending to be an undocumented Mexican criminal in a U.S. prison?

Also, I'm gonna assume that law enforcement in states with a big immigrant population know what a Mexican accent sounds like.

Wingnuts.

Actually, Red Dawn is this time capusle and cultural touchstone. I have seen it NOW, but only very recently, and only because jimmah had no clue about it-- so we downloaded it (hee) like last month.

I can't really claim to have seen it, but now I understand - it's like the John Hughes-ish film for the 80's for wingnuts.

That's overly harsh. but it is totally a product of Reagan-era Cold War fear stuff and it doesnt end in a yay wolverines way. I can see why it was effective. It's like "the Breakfast Club plus Saint Elmos Fire plus Taps" for Young Republicans.

If I ever hear of any studio green lighting a remake of Young Frankenstein, I promise to end my support for planet earth forever.

Wingnuts.

Actually, Red Dawn is this time capusle and cultural touchstone. I have seen it NOW, but only very recently, and only because jimmah had no clue about it-- so we downloaded it (hee) like last month.

Didn't seem like people took it too seriously back then. Well, I probably was hanging out with a different crowd. Given the current environment? I'm pretty sure a Red Dawm 2010 will be taken seriously by, you know, the Tea Party types.

It's going to happen man!!11ty

Uh, yeah. I dug the movie, and I don't think I'm a wing-nut.

'Course, I'm not running 'round shouting "WOLVERINES!!!" every time someone gets my order wrong at the local taqueria.

No dude-- I'm agreeing with you! It was a great movie! I wish I'd seen it at the time, I can totally see why people got into it. I loved it!
There is this weird veneration of it and misappropriation of it now by wingnuts, is what I meant. You know what I mean, Jonah Goldberg types (and much worse). This is why the remake will suck-- those folks will want a very different sort of ending, etc.
