Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #5: ‘What Ever Happened To Scorpio?’

Arts • Views: 5,507

Tonight’s classic cover from the Lizard Collection: issue #5 of Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD, published in October 1968. The gorgeous psychedelic cover is by the great Jim Steranko, who also wrote the story and pencilled the interior artwork.

Our copy of this book is in very fine to near mint condition, with an almost flawless cover, white paper, and super-bright inks. It looks and feels like it just came off the rack today.

GOP congressman threatens seccession if health care law stands

Gene, July 24th 2010, 6:25 pm

In the past I’ve ridiculed a subset of American liberals and Democrats for an annoying tendency to threaten to leave the country– most often for Canada– if things don’t go their way politically. In the end, they rarely do. And at least some liberals have a sense of humor about it...

But there’s a corresponding (and much more disturbing) phenomenon on the conservative side, which seems to be moving from the Right’s extreme wing closer to its mainstream.

Republican Congressman Zach Wamp of Tennessee, who is a candidate for governor in the state’s GOP primary, said that if the federal health care reform law passed by Congress this year isn’t repealed, states will have to consider breaking away from the US.

Zach Wamp recants secession talk
[Link: www.examiner.com...]

Wamp, a Chattanooga congressman, raised the specter of secession in an interview with Hotline on Call. Wamp, talking tough, claimed: "I hope that the American people will go to the ballot box in 2010 and 2012 so that states are not forced to consider separation from this government."

Wamp is currently running for Governor of Tennessee. His opponents for the GOP nomination, Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and state Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey, were quick to criticize his over the top statement.

On Saturday Wamp recanted his wild eyed rhetoric. Wamp told reporters at a campaign stop that: "Of course we will not secede from the union. But we will also not have a governor who will cave in to Barack Obama."

Wamp seems to be taking a cue from Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R). Perry played the crazy card by raising the specter of session in 2009 at a Tea Party rally.

As a former resident of Knoxville, I'm rooting for Haslam.

Latest in the compost pile that consists of Andrew Brietbart apologists comes from Terrence Smith from the Examiner:

Hey, Tom, watch the tape again! She was not - repeat, not - quoted out of context!

For added deranged hilarity, note his spelling of President Obama's name with a numerical "0".

So the bottom line here appears to be that liberals in and out of the 0bama administration are arguing that Shirley Sherrod isn't a racist; she's a class warrior! Well thank goodness for that! She'll fit right in with the rest of the 0bamanauts, who engage in class warfare on a regular, if not daily, basis. But if she's a racist too, as appears to be the case, in spite of liberal protestations to the contrary, not to worry. She fits right in with 0bama's clique quite well in that regard as well.

It's the rest of us mainstream Americans that don't fit in with 0bama's vision of "hope" and "change." Our founding fathers gave us a Constitution that made us the greatest and most prosperous nation on the face of the earth, but now, somehow, we've elected a President and Congress that would like to change all that.

Of course, he'd NEVER engage in race-baiting, as evidenced by his article from two weeks ago regarding the NAACP (BTW, nice placement of quotemarks there, Mr. Smith.)

The increasingly irrelevant NAACP

Hard times have fallen on the National Association for the Advancement of "Colored" People - the NAACP. The organization was founded to fight racism, and while racism surely still exists in America, it's been on the decline for decades, particularly institutional racism. Furthermore, black Americans increasingly engage in racist activities as much as or more than they're victimized by them, so that this disgusting practice has unfortunately become much more of a two-way street. The NAACP, however, seems to be stuck in the 1950s and be unaware of this fact.

They're talking about the idea of bringing racism out in the open in this administration - our inability to discuss racism, but there's a woman on the panel who is the WH communications director who specifically said that Breitbart aired the video to try to prove that the NAACP is a racist organization, so that was terrific.

EJ Dionne is on the panel and I adore that man. He wrote a column about it which is coming out tomorrow, but highlighted all the points we talk about here on LGF.

Someone else was quoted, I didn't catch the name, as saying the Whitehouse should have a department that specifically deals with this issue. I think that's wise. As an example, Israel has a government dept that deals with anti-Semitism which was originally headed by Sharansky before he retired.

Sorry I misquoted that. Gregory quoted a column from Maureen Dowd and she talked about a dept to deal with racism.

It was Donna Brazile, a Democratic strategist, who, after hearing the entire speech, pushed to get it out and helped clear Sherrod's reputation on CNN.

The president shouldn't give Sherrod her old job back. He should give her a new job: Director of Black Outreach. This White House needs one.

Dowd interviewed Congressman Clyburn (D-SC) in that article who said:

"I don't think a single black person was consulted before Shirley Sherrod was fired - I mean c'mon," said Congressman James Clyburn of South Carolina, a black lawmaker so temperate that he agreed with an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal on Friday by Sen. James Webb of Virginia, which urged that "government-directed diversity programs should end."

"The president's getting hurt real bad," Clyburn told me. "He needs some black people around him." He said Obama's inner circle keeps "screwing up" on race: "Some people over there are not sensitive at all about race. They really feel that the extent to which he allows himself to talk about race would tend to pigeonhole him or cost him support, when a lot of people saw his election as a way to get the issue behind us. I don't think people elected him to disengage on race. Just the opposite."

But then why would he want government diversity programs to end? Maybe I'm missing something.

I think it would be a serious mistake for Obama to get too involved in race issues either way. The whole reason he was elected is because he's not a Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton race obsessed black politician. I think that's part of the strategy of the new racist right to force Obama into meddling in racial affairs. The best strategy is let the right wing activists target blacks and let them discredit themselves. Don't get more involved that he has to.
As for affirmative action; I don't like racial hiring quotas but now is probably not the time to rethink the practice. Let's see how the new Republican white rights agenda proceeds before we make any decisions about our future.

Have to concur. I wouldn't use the phrase "white rights agenda", but I do agree that the right would like to demonize Obama over race issues. People can talk about getting past race, but its still as politically toxic as it ever was.

re: #41 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

Good Morning,

It's because Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition is Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's "there should be no such thing as a legal gun" organization. While a real group dedicated to working on lowering access to firearms by felons might well be something useful to the country, this was not it. The NRA and it's ilk delight in pointing this out and putting pressure on those mayors that belonged to it. Combine it with the 2 recent Supreme Court cases and it's a no-brainer for a Tennessee politician to choose the NRA over Bloomberg.

Please note that even as a gun owner, I have no love for the NRA. Everytime those ... people... open their mouths they tend to damage gun owners with the vast middle. Rather like too many other conservative groups these days. But in the end, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition is worse than the NRA and the number of mayors defecting from it shows the position of weakness that it finds itself in.

Thanks for the kind words, getting the palm tree right was an interesting challenge.
LWC-No offense taken, I'm sure. As you can see LWC has a profoundly anti idiotarian outlook on things. He rarely posts, as a working writer he's reading blogs to relax and enjoy. Posting is more like work from his pov. Here and Crooks & Liars are his faves.

Yes, we're quite happy Bonnie Burned out. We've gotten a small bit of rain, that's about it.
However, storm luck may not hold, August is our worst month, and it's coming up fast.

re: #77 Killgore Trout

Sorry I was walking the pup.

I don't agree. It's the 2 ton elephant in the room that no one wants to look at. Obama has spent a lot of time talking about race. He's written about it in his book. He gave the speech on race in 2008 which was one of the most eloquent speeches anyone has every given. So it's not like he hasn't addressed it.

OTOH, you're right that he doesn't want to be seen as the "Black" president per se, particularly with regard to any specific policy. He's the American president who just happens to be Black. However, I think with the surge of racism, having a diversity committee in the WH isn't such a bad idea. Not just about Blacks, but dealing with minority bigotry in general. Most companies have such committees now.

re: #83 wlewisiii

That does explain things and settle matters. Bill Haslam was right to walk away from Bloomburg's organization, especially after the Heller decision.

Whatever you do, don’t try and take a seat from an eager fan at Comic-Con. Things could get vicious.

E! Online reports a man was taken to the hospital after being stabbed in the face with a pen. He was taken out of the San Diego Convention Center yesterday on a stretcher and suffered a minor cut near his eyelid. The assailant was escorted out of the convention center’s H Hall in plastic restraints. He was arrested and charged for assault with a deadly weapon. The victim’s blood was splattered on his free Harry Potter Comic-Con t-shirt that was given out earlier at the convention.

Last night I was flipping the dial and came across Al Franken's keynote speech to the Netroots convention on, surprisingly, Fox news. He talked about a number of things with an emphasis on the importance of net neutrality and the dangers of having a very few huge corporations in ownership of media as has been happening and continues to pose a legitimate threat. I thought it was a good speech overall.

So after the speech, they go to a panel, including Ann Coulter (the only one I recognized), to discuss the speech. It was the most juvenile display I think I've ever witnessed. I realize it was Fox, but I was stunned at the nonsense. There was no legitimate discussion of the content of the speech, just "it was booooring" with the commentators sounding like so many junior high bullies nyah-nyahing with eyes rolling. I think I made it about 5 minutes before escaping the channel for more adult fare.

And people wonder what has happened to civility and intelligent discussion?

Media is a business. Ann Coulter has some serious thoughts/instelligence or commentary but it get's lost in her schtick, which is encouraged by her fan base. She happens to be wrong on stuff and might have some other issues. Either way, getting too adult may cost her some ratings points.

Franken, ironically, came from entertainment and went to politics, he's trying to be more serious, somewhat the opposite from Coulter. He has some issues too and I don't know if I agree with him on net neutrality, but I would have liked to see that speech.

It's obvious that Franken, as a former comedian, is beneath their consideration as a serious commentator on the current social and political issues of the day. And he's also proof that the state of Minnesota is unable to handle fixed elections when the Democrats rig things to get clowns such as Franken into office and stop the courts from properly blocking the chicanery that took place.

Therefore, he deserves nothing but their intellectual contempt.

What do y'all think of Mo' Dowd in today's Times saying the Obama White house is too white?

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

I thought this paragraph was odd. While I think Obama, for example, mishandled Rev. Jeremiah Wright--he should have defended him against out-of-context soundbites being used to attack him--why on earth does Dowd include "gays."

It is very clear that Barack Obama doesn't like gays.

The president appears completely comfortable in his own skin, but it seems he feels that he and Michelle are such a huge change for the nation to absorb that he can be overly cautious about pushing for other societal changes for blacks and gays. At some level, he acts like the election was enough; he shouldn’t have to deal with race further. But he does.

His closest advisers — some of the same ones who urged him not to make the race speech after the Rev. Jeremiah Wright issue exploded — are so terrified that Fox and the Tea Party will paint Obama as doing more for blacks that they tiptoe around and do less. “Who knew that the first black president would make it even harder on black people?” asked a top black Democratic official.

OT, but I finished my first radio script...shot it off to the guy who did a seminar on radio theatre at our state community theatre convention for hopefully some constructive feedback. The nice thing about radio scripts is that they don't have to be that long, which helps when you're trying to get yourself worked up to longer pieces.

Good for you. Let me know if/what feedback you get.

Police: Man stabbed with pen at Comic-Con

(CNN) -- A Comic-Con attendee stabbed another near the eye with a pen Saturday after they got into an argument over whether one was sitting too close to the other, police said.

The injured man, in his 20s, was taken to a hospital with a minor cut, said San Diego Police Officer David Stafford. The attacker, also in his 20s, was arrested and booked for assault with a deadly weapon, he said.

The incident took place in the San Diego Convention Center while fans were waiting for a panel featuring actor Seth Rogen discussing the science-fiction comedy "Paul."

"The room was very crowded and the males argued over one male sitting too close to the other," Stafford said.

The suspect was later seen being led away in handcuffs. He had on a blue "Harry Potter" T-shirt.

The panel was delayed for about 30 minutes while attendees were shown a series of movie trailers.

"Well, there is a crowd issue. It's gotten really crowded. And if anything, an incident like this points to the need for more space," convention-goer Zennie Abraham told iReport -- the CNN website that allows people to submit pictures and videos.

"Should Comic-Con be in San Diego? I think so, but San Diego's got to make more space for it. It's become too big and I didn't think anything like this could happen because it's a chill event but it did happen."

Comic-Con, the annual gathering of self-proclaimed fanboys and fangirls, began Thursday and concludes Sunday. Aside from the stabbing, the convention has proceeded without incident so far, Stafford said.

Hard to tell just yet what's happening. Some reports have Hayward resigning, others are claiming the board is ousting him.

If I were Hayward, I'd pull the rip-cord on my golden parachute and yell "Geronimo!" His stock options will be worth a lot more thanks to his own departure, and it's not like he ever has to work again, strictly from an economic standpoint. I fully agree with this sentiment. The Evil Communist argument doesn't really hold water - capitalism leads by example, as our old enemies the Russians and the Chinese have amply demonstrated. Nothing would flush the Castro regime out of power faster than a booming economy and demand for imported goods.

Personally, I'd love to see those beachfront casinos and resorts restored to their former architectural glory. Even better - there's a whole population of Cubans living in the states who are more than willing to make it happen, given the chance.

Reading the story, it seems most of our home-grown threat comes from people reading stuff on the internet with questionable knowledge of Islam. Actually, this seems to be an issue with these dolts today. I knoow that the following is from Wikipedia, but it is sourced to The Atlantic. When I go back to OU in August, I'll check to see if the particular issue is in library somewhere. This particular example, is about Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines, but you hear similar about many of these groups. Many in the Taliban for instance received "education" of a seriously warped version of Islam from barely literate teachers in some Madrassas in Pakistan during the Soviet-Afghan War.

Mark Bowden in an Atlantic story on the Martin and Gracia Burnham kidnapping and captivity describe the couple as "gently engaged their captors in theological discussion" and finding these jihadists to be shallow, even adolescent, in their faith. Unfamiliar with the Qur'an, the outlaws had only a sketchy notion of Islam, which they saw as a set of behavioral rules, to be violated when it suited them. Kidnapping, murder and theft were justified by their special status as holy warriors. One by one they sexually appropriated several of the women captives, claiming them as `wives`.[70]

70- "Manhunt" by Mark Bowden The Atlantic, March 2007, p.60

apropos of nothing, as is appropriate for the region of the country I live, I really really hate Nascar.

It does lack the exciting right turns of British courses.

That's kinda what made me feel the need to speak up, there was some F1 on at work. Not a big fan still, but at least there's a real course.

Great Work , Charles.

I take it that 'Sergeant Fury' of the 1964 comic series bacame morphed into 'Agent Fury' in later comics ? Clearly the same character - Nick Fury.

Thanks for looking into your great collection of classic comics.
