The Self-Debunking Outrageous Outrage of the Day

Yet another outrageous outrage is just now bubbling up to the surface, pushed by … I hope you’re sitting down … Drudge Report: White House backed release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi.

In this case, all you have to do to debunk this ridiculously misleading headline is read the story below it.

In the letter, sent on August 12 last year to Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond and justice officials, Mr LeBaron wrote that the US wanted Megrahi to remain imprisoned in view of the nature of the crime.

The note added: “Nevertheless, if Scottish authorities come to the conclusion that Megrahi must be released from Scottish custody, the US position is that conditional release on compassionate grounds would be a far preferable alternative to prisoner transfer, which we strongly oppose.”

It’s the new, self-debunking outrageous outrage, brought to you by the same old hacks. The White House did not back the release, but if Scotland was going to free him they preferred compassionate release instead of transferring him to a prison. Even this slight amount of nuance is apparently too taxing for the right wing.

Of course, the bogus outrage instantly popped up at Hot Air, promoted by wingnut liar “JammieWearingFool,” who omitted the first sentence I quoted above because it just looks so much more outrageous without it: Hot Air Headlines » Surprise: State Dep’t supported release of Lockerbie bomber.

With a bonus — a bigoted Birther comment:

Our new muslim government loves them some mohamet followers.

Back during the previous admin, it seemed the Left's first question was not "Is there anything to this?," but rather "How can we use this to make Bush look bad?" Obviously the Right's thought process isn't all that different.

"Mr LeBaron added that freeing the bomber and making him live in Scotland "would mitigate a number of the strong concerns we have expressed with regard to Megrahi's release".

The US administration lobbied the Scottish government more strongly against sending Megrahi home, under a prisoner transfer agreement signed by the British and Libyan governments, in a deal now known to have been linked to a pound stg. 550 million oil contract for BP.

It claimed this would flout a decade-old agreement between Britain and the US that anyone convicted of the bombing would serve their sentence in a Scottish prison. Megrahi was released by Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill on the grounds that he had three months to live, making his sentence effectively spent.

It looks like the US wanted him to stay in Scotland if he they decided to release him on compassionate grounds.

What's truly scary is that the craziest amongst them were once rabid Bush-haters, but have now become rabid Obama-haters. "ODS" doesn't begin to describe their whacked-out mindset.

8 Kronocide  Sun, Jul 25, 2010 12:51:26pm

And, I might add, there's also a tinge of racism adding another compounding factor to today's version of ODS. If you look at the progression from CDS to BDS to ODS... I shudder to think of what the next President will go through. I thought BDS could not get any worse, yet I was wrong.

9 baier  Sun, Jul 25, 2010 12:52:27pm

This is another BS story, no doubt. It does, however, show that the US had prior knowledge that the the Lockerbie bomber was to be released, despite claiming otherwise, but even that isn't a big deal.

OK, this guy takes the cake:

First, although it may not be happening, the lack of media coverage SHOWING THAT IT'S NOT HAPPENING is very suspicious.

Secondly, if the border were properly protected, dozens of wingnut bloggers and their loyal readers wouldn't have fallen for this in the first place, despite the fact that they manufactured the story themselves, and wanted it to be true.

Also, please note that the gentleman appears to write for the "Texas Nationalist Examiner". HUH?

I'm born and raised in Brooklyn, and I found that for a while, for what ever marketing reason, network TV was crawling with sitcoms that made every New Yorker (and many times, Jewish New Yorkers) look like some sort of self-serving twits, with no real loyalties or friendship that didn't have some selfish benefit.

LOL.

"Although the makers of the movie 'District 9' have stated flatly that there is actually no ghetto outside of Johannesburg filled with 1.8 million crustacean-like aliens, and the government of South Africa has confirmed this, a suspicious lack of television reports about the lack of aliens leads us to wonder: why is our own government doing absolutely nothing to positively refudiate the existence of these creatures, and how long will it be before they show up outside of Laredo?"

I'm not saying the CAIR report is accurate either, but, it appears that in 2001 CAIR has almost no white females listed for any reason at a mosque... even before 9/11, it would have been to their advantage to report positive figures of white females (and males) converting and/or attending Islamic services.

I'm not saying you are wrong, I'm saying show me where you saw that. The source is asa important as the data.

Keep in mind that the ethnic makeup of non-immigrant attendees will depend largely on the demographic of the neighborhood in which the mosque is located. Hope that helps a little. And I haven't seen you here before, so welcome!

cool story...
as for me, I was in such distress two weeks ago I told by docs my leg had to come off and I was ready...but first I had to have a pressure test to see where my blood flow was and we found out the pressure has almost doubled to about 55% of normal...the next morning I went into surgery for an angioplast and have the wound debrided...then ten days on a wound vac, followed, hopefully by a graft...and , the nerve damage seems to have improved over the last month, so amputation is off the table for now...they might save the damned thing afterall...but another bypass failure and I'm going for the one legged look, pronto...I've suffered as much as I can

Hey - just popping in for a minute here, and very glad to hear this news! With so many good folks pulling for you, well, it just has to stay positive!

Has anybody posted about wikileaks and the guardian leaking a whole ton of military documents again?

If not, here are some of the shocking revelations:

The war logs also detail:

• How a secret "black" unit of special forces hunts down Taliban leaders for "kill or capture" without trial.

• How the US covered up evidence that the Taliban have acquired deadly surface-to-air missiles.

• How the coalition is increasingly using deadly Reaper drones to hunt and kill Taliban targets by remote control from a base in Nevada.

• How the Taliban have caused growing carnage with a massive escalation of its roadside bombing campaign, which has killed more than 2,000 civilians to date.

That gives them no right to sabotage the policy or endanger the soldiers and the US in general.

To a certain type of leftist, trying to kill Talibs without trying to arrest them first is a "war crime". Some on the left have also protested the drone strikes, though to his credit Obama has ignored them. I think that the man in charge of wikileaks is an anti-war leftist whose actions make him objectively pro-Islamist.

Who the hell is leaking this stuff?
Returning now and reading McSpiff's later posts - that's one of the things that pissed him off. Rightly so.

These are NATO documents, perhaps not held in US-only custody. It could also be a case of massive sloppiness in handling classified. Wiki-leaks is not related to the US at all.

Someone with the same kind of mindset as Breitbart perhaps? Only seemingly and very likely from the leftwing side this time...the Right has no corner on the lunatic market after all.

Almost certainly leftwing. Anti-military people on the right are very few and far between, that's a view the left is far more likely to embrace.

Well, looks like Scotland followed their "recommendation." So I'd say they had some influence! YAWN. Your typical spin!

Can you actually read?

In the letter, sent on August 12 last year to Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond and justice officials, Mr LeBaron wrote that the US wanted Megrahi to remain imprisoned in view of the nature of the crime.

The note added: "Nevertheless, if Scottish authorities come to the conclusion that Megrahi must be released from Scottish custody, the US position is that conditional release on compassionate grounds would be a far preferable alternative to prisoner transfer, which we strongly oppose."

Mr LeBaron added that freeing the bomber and making him live in Scotland "would mitigate a number of the strong concerns we have expressed with regard to Megrahi's release".

How is that following a recommendation? They preferred a release inside Scotland, if anything at all, rather than a transfer to Lybia. But preferred no release at all.

If it turns out some Dutch file clerk shitcanned the wrong disk in Brussels, I shall come at you with mockery.

The right is more likely to try and corrode the military from the inside, see "I-Won't-Follow-Orders-Under-Obama" or "gays-ruin-military-cohesion" jokers
