The next outrageous outrage is sweeping the wingnutoshpere...
Shirley Silenced: Sherrod Kept Out of Sunday Talk-shows

She was likened to a modern day Rosa Parks or Nelson Mandela, but former the Ag official, according to the Washington Post, was not interviewed on a single major Sunday morning talk-show following a week that can only be described as a Shirley Sherrod media frenzy.
...
Considering the Shirley Sherrod interview barrage that took place last Thursday, to not see Sherrod on television Sunday morning sends a clear signal the mainstream media no longer feels allowing the public to get to know the real Shirley Sherrod advances their agenda.

Outrageous!

democrats in the republican congresses called for Bush and the republicans to finance the iraq and afghanistan wars, but that would have meant - gasp! - raising taxes or calling for cuts in other programs to the tune of the $80 billion+/yr that they were costing

bush and the republican congresses borrowed it instead

if Windie were pres then, Iraq wouldn't have been invaded in the first place which would have made the situation in Afghanistan about 15x better.

And I'm not trying to be aggravating here, I really would like to know why you think the Afghanistan situation would have been "better" (and in what way" if we had not gone to Iraq.

I think Afghanistan is, was and will always be a lost cause; just seems to me the folks there are such opportunists, and will go with whoever or whatever fits a particular need, right now, today, rather than looking toward what the future will be like.

I fully admit I could be complete naive and wrong on that; which is why I'm interested in hearing how you think it would have been better and why.

Iraq defines a pattern of behavior in the eyes of much of the muslim world. The Taliban were on the ropes before Iraq, they had become incredibly unpopular. The invasion and subsequent insurgency in Iraq became a popular symbol of resistance, and similarly recast the Taliban as resistance fighters. Every gain they've made as come post Iraq, before they were just struggling to survive.

However, Al Qaeda horrific behavior in Iraq ultimately provoked the Sunni Awaking against them and shattered any heroic image they had built up. The Taliban are similarly despised by the majority of Afghans. The evil of our enemies is proving their undoing.

So you're tying the resurgence of the Taliban to resistance to our Iraq invasion?
That could very well be.

I still think the Taliban would have enjoyed a resurgence, anyhow. Again, the folks in Afghanistan seem prone to taking what is offered by whoever offers what meets their needs right now, today. I think the Taliban would have eventually regrouped and come back, perhaps not as quickly, but it would have happened sooner or later anyhow.

Complicated, odd, strange place, Afghanistan is.

However, Al Qaeda horrific behavior in Iraq ultimately provoked the Sunni Awaking against them and shattered any heroic image they had built up. The Taliban are similarly despised by the majority of Afghans. The evil of our enemies is proving their undoing.

The Taliban currently offer poor and rural Afghans their only hope for anything approaching class egalitarianism, how fucking sad is that? Karzai's government is setting new records for government corruption, daily:

Oddly, then, the question of what constitutes democracy in Pakistan has been almost entirely neglected. A New York Times article reporting the ways in which the Taliban "exploit class rifts" came close, but shied away from highlighting what is glaringly obvious to anyone who has spent time in Pakistan: if democracy in Pakistan implies the status quo, the Taliban is here to stay.

Socio-economic disparities run rampant, and corruption, classism and an entrenched feudal system all but ensure that the poor - more than 30 percent of Pakistan's 170 million citizens, according to the World Bank - remain poor and marginalized.

Nine percent of Pakistanis lack access to clean water, according to the UN, and 38 percent of Pakistani children are underweight. Bonded labor continues unhindered in the most densely populated provinces of Punjab and Sindh.

Given the little that Pakistani governments, both civilian and military, have provided by way of land reform, education, health care and equitable justice over the past few decades, it's not entirely surprising that an alternative - any alternative - holds appeal for Pakistan's lower classes and peasantry. The Taliban in Swat have forced wealthy landowners out, and, in an ersatz land reform, passed the abandoned plots to the tenants who manned them.

From popular media coverage, it would seem that Pakistan is caught in a Manichean battle for power between the government and the Taliban. It is this myopic thinking that is at the root of America's problems in Pakistan. If the Taliban is associated with increased socio-economic egalitarianism, however much laced with Islamic fundamentalism, it will continue to be popular amongst poorer Pakistanis.

Well, land reform is important. When it was implemented in Bolivia in the 60's, it eliminated the rural grievances that fed insurgency, and thus made the nation poor ground for guerrillas. This had fatal consequences for one Ernesto Guevara.

Jesus steve, this is beyond the usual defeatist crap you pedal. 3 guys means the war is lost? Get fucking real.

The Taliban are not going to be defeated traditionally - the military campaign - as all campaigns in the region over the last three centuries - is unwinnable in terms of eradication.

All the troops can do is hold on and get shot at until the political situation (a'la bribing the chiefs) is settled and the local forces are drilled with their own officer corps. And a viable none-narco economy has to sprout from somewhere.

How do you figure?
And I'm not trying to be aggravating here, I really would like to know why you think the Afghanistan situation would have been "better" (and in what way" if we had not gone to Iraq.

I think Afghanistan is, was and will always be a lost cause; just seems to me the folks there are such opportunists, and will go with whoever or whatever fits a particular need, right now, today, rather than looking toward what the future will be like.

I fully admit I could be complete naive and wrong on that; which is why I'm interested in hearing how you think it would have been better and why.

sorry, I was gone for a while.

My understanding is that the drawdown of the troops in afghanistan and the lack of focus on it (again, "I don't really think about where he is anymore") Had a corrosive effect on both the mission and belief in law and order.

That's what I was thinking in terms of: a trade off. The plan would essentially throw the Afghans themselves under the bus. That's why I don't like it, but i wanted to put it out there to get people's reactions.

We would benefit from the mining even if we don't reap the profits directly. An increase in supplies of the products from the new mines will bring lower prices to all customers.

Don't use Drano - use a buttload of bleach instead. Let it sit overnight - then flush with water. If you use the garden hose trick after adding bleach or chemicals use caution - wear eye protection as stuff may go everywhere.

I remember being maybe... 8 or 9? Maybe even younger.

Mom had gone out of town, leaving me and Dad home to fend for ourselves. No big deal, she had left fish sticks. We'd survive. Except on Sunday afternoon he got called into work. Works for the city water dept, a new subdivision needed its water lines "flushed" with chlorine bleach before they could bring them online.

Well, he couldn't find anyone to watch me so it became an impromptu "take the kid to work day". So we head out to the job site, me very excited to be riding along in the truck. Anyways, the city supplies the chemicals and more or less supervises the contractors doing the flush (or that's how I remember it anyways).

Well, this contractor didn't want to be there anymore than anyone else, so he has his guys rushing. He's over doing something with the pump, fiddling around when the line comes off. He gets his back turned but absolutely soaks his leather jacket in bleach. Totally ruined. I can't stop laughing, all the other laborers are laughing at me, dad thinks its all great and this guy is just freaking out. He wants to get mad at me, but knows he can't. I know he can't either, so we all keep laughing. Never forgot that image.

That was the only time I've gotten to go the job site with him. Definitely a favorite memory I haven't thought of in years. Thanks for reminding me.

Is it possible that when we invaded Afghanistan, that perhaps a different model of government would have been better than the one there now? I know that there are 4 large Ethnic Groups in the country, with the Taliban (at least in the past) predominantly from just one of them (the Pashtun). Perhaps it would have been better to have a more decentralized government, like that of Switzerland or the United Kingdom?

In October 1988, at a party in honor of Suzanne Mubarak, wife of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Uday murdered his father's personal valet and food taster, Kamel Hana Gegeo (some say at the request of his mother). Before an assemblage of horrified guests, an intoxicated Uday bludgeoned Gegeo with a cane, reputedly administering the coup de grâce with an electric carving knife.

Non of those improvements are of much use as long as the population there remains so insular and uneducated. The schools get bombed, and the money for the rest of the improvements gets stolen. Iraq actually has a tradition of trade and thus is a better place to spend infrastructure money.

Pardon me for sticking my nose in your discussion. The war in Afghanistan is an important issue that's been somewhat forgotten and it needs more debate.

I agree it's important. The son of one of my HS friends just got home from Afghanistan; she was a wreck the entire time he was there.

Honestly - I don't have a clue what should be done. Afghanistan is such a complicated place, always has been, complicated further by extremely harsh terrain in some areas that no one but an Afghani can operate in, apparently, at least no one except those who have local help.

What it seems to need, that I don't think it's ever really had, is a sort of national stability.

I think there is a lack of education among most Afghans, coupled with a lack of desire for any education. I think most are unaware of much of what exists in other parts of the world, or it's beyond their ability to understand; I think many live from day to day, wanting only that day's needs met, and unconcerned about any sort of future. What they have right now seems good enough to them. And whoever they believe will help them keep things the same - that's who gets support on that day.

All of these observations are not observations from any sort of deep reading or studying of the situation or people there, just the things I sort of "read between the lines" when I see news stories from Afghanistan, so I could be completely off-base.

I just think Afghanistan will not, in my lifetime, undergo any sort of culture change, or desire for a culture change, that will create any sort of stability there.

As to stay or leave . . . I'm basically at this point trying to figure out what I think, and am open to hearing whatever reasonable and rational arguments there are for either option.

re: #99 Dark_Falcon

That's what I was thinking in terms of: a trade off. China agrees to stay out of the Western Hemisphere, and in return they get whatever riches Afghanistan holds and we promise to ensure that no ruckus is raised if they do nasty things to secure them. The plan would essentially throw the Afghans themselves under the bus. That's why I don't like it, but i wanted to put it out there to get people's reactions.

Whoa.
Who is in a position to "give" Afghan riches to the Chinese?
And IMO, the Afghans at this point are throwing themselves under the bus.

Also, those three models or whatever they were, doing the upside down splits, didn't even get to take a bow.

I've had my ass in a sling any number of times, and I couldn't sing either. She did a remarkable job.

My 82-year-old father is in California visiting my family for a week. For the past few years I've mostly seen him in Europe where there are many distractions so I hadn't kept up with his politics.

I now discover that he's a fervent tea-partier.
He's a bit tired of Rush Limbaugh but he thinks Mark Levin has some interesting ideas although sometimes he goes a little bit far, ha ha.
He reads the news on TownHall (paper news, WSJ).
The country would be a lot better off if McCain and Palin were running it.
Obama is a product of affirmative action (too stupid to have gotten into Harvard any other way) and is pretty plainly a Socialist.
Global warming is a hoax.

I don't know how it happened! He was a Socialist himself, like a card-carrying one, in his youth. He's become the epitome of the old, white, selfish guy, who doesn't want to pay taxes but keeps collecting govt. benefits.

That was no easy feat, that took a great deal of strength, training and practice. It was amazing.

I've seen performances similar to this by Cirque du Soleil, where they seem to have an endless supply of folks who can do those sorts of performances - I suspect those others were professional dancers or gymnasts, or maybe could even have been circus performers.

Non of those improvements are of much use as long as the population there remains so insular and uneducated. The schools get bombed, and the money for the rest of the improvements gets stolen. Iraq actually has a tradition of trade and thus is a better place to spend infrastructure money.

Iraq actually had plenty of infrastructure, along with one of the best nation health care systems and standards of living in the region, before we bombed the shit out of it.

Right, I'm pretty much on the fence myself regarding Afghanistan. It seems to me that there were three main objectives to be reached with the war:

- dealing with the Al Qaeda presence, which we largely did by now;

- insuring the safety of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal. I must say I have no idea how this is going;

- the nation-building part: stabilizing the region, holding meaningful elections, investing and helping in the construction of basic infrastructure.

We are not there, contrary to some people in this thread think, to kill all the Taliban. The Taliban movement is incredibly oppressive, but it's almost certainly too costly to eradicate it by eliminating all their members. Worse, our methods so far are killing a lot of civilians and making the Taliban more relatively more sympathetic to non-Pashtun locals, as General McChrystal himself admitted. That's the opposite of what we want.

So, like you, I don't know if it's worth the cost to continue with the war.

I grew up with the adults in my family talking politics at every holiday dinner. When I was little, I'd hear them yelling at each other, but didn't know what it was all about or who was on which side. They didn't allow any of it to effect their relationships with each other. My parents were liberal. Dad passed away in 93. Mom and I still have great talks.

Anyway, your family probably understands he is who he is and has his opinions, and not hold it against him. You may want to warn strangers! You'll probably have to gauge how much or what you say, but that can be ok.

I have a boss who is far right. Loves Glenn Beck and is forever telling me how broke he is now that Obama is president. I've managed to interject humor into our political discussions. He does pay my salary, after all. So when he moans about his finances, I tell him how sorry I feel for him and that we have a shed in the back of the property if he ever wants to move. He bought his home for $1.5 million, owns a fishing boat (used to have two) and a plane.

Reine,

I share your rethinking phase in Afghanistan. It is a much different challenge than Iraq. I have no answers at this point and hope Petraus doesn't just think 'worked in Iraq, will work here.'

After a great week of seeing Sherrod's salvation and Breitbart's very public facepalm, Afghanistan is cause for some serious worry.

That's all I have at the moment.

Interesting, isn't it, that it seems to be a puzzlement for the 3 or 4 of us on this thread who've addressed it. Wonder if the gov't is just as confused as we are?

I made Tomato Pie today.
Somebody posted the recipe here a day or two ago, and I made it just like they said.

Here's what they didn't tell you:
1. REALLY drain those tomatoes, I mean, let the slices sit in the colander for no less than 10 minutes, and THEN pat them all over with a paper towel, then again. Get as much liquid out of the tomato slices as you can (or the diced tomatoes if you're using canned).

2. It probably would have been helpful if I had put the pie crust into the oven and let it cook for a bit before I loaded it up with the tomatoes and the mayo/cheddar/mozzarella topping. Pie crust was soggy, and I think if I'd cooked it a bit first, it wouldn't have been.

That's the problem with some much of the "right" drifting off into nut-land - there isn't a public dialogue going on about real issues.

Afghanistan has been a problem for the West since at least the era when the British empire ruled south Asia.

Then, December 13 - mom was diagnosed with cancer, PROBABLY ovarian cancer, could have been pancreatic cancer. She died December 31, before they finished the tests that would have given us a definite diagnosis. Meanwhile, on Dec 24th, while we're trying to deal with Mom, Dad fell and broke his hip, and had surgery to repair it. He was in rehab hospital the day mom died. After that - just downhill. Dad died on the last day of April 2008. We never expected it would all happen that way. So visit, and enjoy, and ignore whatever petty aggravations there are. So not worth it.

It's not about a plan, it's about a tactic within internal American politics.

I doubt we can just turn it into Western style democracy within a generation, that is naive. If Afghanistan can turn into a stable state that is the best that can be had at this point. Still a tall order.

Shrimp (any seafood) sold in Louisiana must be labelled as to country of origin.

So if shrimp here say "Product of Louisiana", they're Louisiana shrimp.

And of course some folks go buy their shrimp directly from the shrimpers when they bring the catch in. Can't much argue with where they came from.

Shrimp (any seafood) sold in Louisiana must be labelled as to country of origin.

Reine, these are not shrimp from here.

I'm not doubting what you're saying.
There was a huge brou-ha-ha here a few years ago, with local fishers and seafood providers all upset because of seafood being brought in from overseas, and sold AS IF it were local - this included crawfish! Big deal it was, the Chinese crawfish.

So a law was passed that all seafood has to be labelled by country of origin; and there is a special logo that can be put on the package of anything local.

re: #253 reine.de.tout

I'm sorry, that was me and yeah....I do bake my crust 1st and really let the the tomatoes drain.

Forgive me?

as long as the dough bakes throughly... brushing with olive oil & garlic before the oven is another way. but usually if the pizza is not so good the ove is not hot enough. a real pizza oven cranks up to over 600 degrees & that is hard to do at home.

re: #421 webevintage

The dough has to be relaxed. You have the make the dough way ahead of time and let it rest, then roll it out. It's best to make it the night before, let it rise, then stretch before cooking. Over stretching or over kneading activates the gluten then it becomes too elastic.

We went to a wedding at some sort of Protestant church this weekend and the Minister spoke of how God chose this bride and groom to become married before they were even born and that drew some shouts of approval from the around the congregation. In other words, it was all predestined. I can't think of anything less Christian than the concept of predestination. If we don't have free will and we're just robots playing the roles God chose for us, then why would there be a heaven or a hell to reward or punish people for the lives they led? Do these ministers even think this stuff through?

The Paramount runs two or three silents a year with orchestras. We've seen Wings, the original Ben Hur, The Sheik, &c. Fun stuff.

Most people don't realize that talkies helped kill orchestras in the States. In 1926 there were over 1,800 small orchestras in this country. My mom's dad and his brothers all played at the movie theater in Hannibal, Mo.

Homemade pasta is a tough dish for a perfectionist. You have to make it a few times before you realize less is more: by kneading and kneading it, you active the gluten and it becomes Plastic Man. It will taste really good but be chewy as hell.

Make your dough (pizza or pasta), knead it a little, then leave it overnight in the fridge. It will be really soft and easy to work with.

Yeah, I have. Pitiful, isn't it? Back in the day, a Toolpusher (for the uninitiated, that is the ranking representative of the rig owner on a drilling rig), would stand down a crew and demand a new Company Man (the Oil Company head man) with half a brain be sent out if he thought things were getting out of hand.

I remember one glorious incident where we conspired to slip some phenolphthaline (commonly used by the Mud Engineer) into the Company Man's coffee because he was running off hands to show how big his dick was.

This resulted in continuous, explosive diarrhea. They took him back to the World in a survival suit to keep him from making the helicopter unusable. The new guy, as one can imagine, was *much* more willing to listen.

Ugh, man, FF7 and 8 never grabbed me, JRPG repetition forever, everything's totally on rails, no solid combat design, just esoteric mumbojumbo masquerading as depth. The only JRPG I care about is Panzer Dragoon Saga, it worked within the JRPG limitations and did it well, it didn't force a bunch of mindless combat to draw out the experience cheaply

JRPGS aren't really RPGS, they're adventure games. it's a bunch of minigames glued to flashy art assets and a story. Fallout is an RPG. Torment is an RPG. Ultima 4 is an RPG. Oblivion is an RPG.

They should remake Autoduel, and they've already granted my wish in remaking X-Com. I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of Return of Heracles, but I'm not holding my breath,

Strategy games meaning tactical J-stuff like Ogre Battle and Disgaea? Or grand strategy like Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron? Or strategy games meaning classic western RTS like Starcraft, Dark Reign, Dune 2, CnC, Red Alert...

If you're into JRPGs, you owe it to yourself to play Panzer Dragoon Saga and Persona 3 and 4. Those Square FF games are so sugary they'll give you diabetic shock ;-)

Personally, as far as strategy goes, I think Introversion's Defcon is pretty awesome:

It's got that WarGames wireframe look to it, retrofuture, great stuff

Unbelievable. Pajamas Media wingnut, Alfonzo Rachel is actually defending Breitbart's deceptive, despicable smear against Shirley Sherrod. And he actually says that the video, even though it was edited and taken out of context, proves that she is a racist.

re: #605 Max D. Reinhardt

No honor, no truth, no nothing, just mindless bullshit from those guys, rank and fetid racism

And the apex of the douche pyramid is Breitbart himself, stroking his pseudobeard

Strategy games like Medieval 2: Total War, and Empire: Total War. I might get one that focuses more on political expansion ideas. And the sugary stuff Square produces helps me escape from the Autism, if only for a while. There is a game on Steam that I've heard is alot of fun that involves you being able to play through the music on your computer as levels. Unfortunately, I can't remember its name.

That would be Audiosurf
