Fox News Has No Black Viewers to Alienate

One thing that has always seemed odd about Fox News’s continual race-baiting: if you look at it strictly from a business angle, why would Fox risk alienating a large segment of their viewing audience by pushing all these “reverse racism” nontroversies?

Well, now we have the answer. They’re not worried about a backlash because there’s nobody to alienate; their audience is only 1.38% black.

The New York Times’ Brian Stelter tweeted that, according to Nielsen Media Research, Fox News has averaged just 29,000 black viewers in primetime so far this television season (9/09-7/10). That represents just 1.38% of its 2.102 million total viewer audience.

CNN and MSNBC, meanwhile, both have far more black viewers, both in absolute terms and as a proportion of their overall audiences.

MSNBC has averaged 145,000 black viewers, representing 19.3% of its 751,000 total viewer audience.

CNN has averaged 134,000 black viewers, representing 20.7% of its 648,000 total viewer audience.

Very few black people are conservative, so this stands to reason. Fox's going with the Breitbart story was still a bad thing, of course.

2 Summer Seale  Mon, Jul 26, 2010 9:47:00pm

And yet, we're consistently told the Tea Parties are so racially diverse! =)

I do not think that term actually means what they think it means...

Probably similar numbers of Jews and Hispanics as well.

4 Targetpractice  Mon, Jul 26, 2010 9:49:01pm

I must admit, I'm totally lost as to how the boys at Faux will try to spin this as a "good thing." Or perhaps they won't, and instead send their attack dogs (O'Reilly, Hannity, & Beck) to spin the numbers as "proof" that black people aren't interested in the "truth" that Faux deals in.

I think they'd do better with Jewish people. From what I've seen, Fox is pretty Israel-philic.

People of color see through the "stories" on Fox very clearly.

It would either drive me to depression or make me a very pissed off viewer. I'm assuming the choice is keeping your sanity.

They may be, but Jews remain largely liberal as a voting block, and socially. We also, by and large, tend to group in large urban areas and blue states.

Jews vote about 80% Dem. Fox might get a few of those as viewers but probably not many since they've shifted to a more Ron Paul, Alex Jones, Birch society agenda.

Yep. Ignore the inconvenient fact that their minority viewership is virtually non-existent and instead continue playing up that they're pulling in 2+ million viewers versus versus the 751,000 of MSNBC.

Well, according to Variety Magazine it was 65 in 2008.

Among ad-supported cable nets, the news nets (along with older-skewing Hallmark Channel, Golf Channel and GSN's daytime sked) sport the most gray, with Fox News Channel's daytime and primetime skeds the absolute oldest, clocking in with a median age above 65. Youngest nets are the daytime skeds for Noggin and Nickelodeon, with a median age under 10.

Very few black people are conservative? Or very few black people feel that the type of conservatism represented by Fox (and, really, the Republican party as currently constituted) have anything to offer them, or represent their political, ideological, economic or social interests in any way at all?

23 Summer Seale  Mon, Jul 26, 2010 9:59:45pm

My best guess estimate why the number (1.38%) is so high:

1) 50% of it are kids on the TV without adult supervision, channel surfing and getting stuck on the station while interrupted on their cell phones by their BF/GF without realizing it.

2) 25% are TVs where the buttons got jammed and they're waiting to take it in to Best Buy to get it fixed by the Geek Squad.

3) 24% are the result of falling asleep while flicking the buttons in bed late at night and landing on a commercial before the eyes close and they drift off.

4) 1% are the 30 or so black members of the Tea Party which are consistently shuttled around from demonstration to demonstration as an example of how incredibly diverse the Tea Parties really are.

FOX and the far-right GOP'ers may be "pro-Israel", yet it's not the 3% of Americans who are Jewish that they are really chasing. It's the 15% of Americans who beleive in the imminent end of days that's turned on by the thought of Israel being the harbinger of the "rapture".

Or they could just be wasting a whole lot of dough failing to attract Jewish voters...you decide.

re: #18 Dark_Falcon

I don't think that's accurate. His ratings seem to high for that to be the average.

It's not really that unusual though for news programming. It's been well known that nightly news viewers for the big three networks has always been older. Younger people generally don't watch news and consider news "depressing". Average for the three networks for nightly news was 62.3 for 2009.

Network news divisions have failed for years to attract additional younger viewers to their evening programs. In 2009, the audience for nightly news grew yet older.

The median age of nightly news viewers was 62.3 for all three evening newscasts in 2009, according to an analysis of copyrighted Nielsen data provided by Magna, a media buying firm. That was up by a full year from 2008, when the median age of all three networks averaged 61.3. The median age of viewers had been rising since 2004, as has the U.S. population as a whole.

It was a political choice. Nixon decided that black people were mostly lost to the Dems, but Southern whites could be won over. The tactic worked, but it had grave repercussions. Like in many other matters, Nixon did what he thought he had to do to win, and hang any moral considerations.

I sometimes wonder what else they could have done? Cities were largely one-party zones (due to the Democrats better machine politics and the growing power of left-wing advocates, government unions, and non-profits) and the South was already on board with the GOP's anti-communism (which some who were not socially conservative had stopped caring about (they were wrong)). What else could the Republican party have done that did not involve a major move to the left?

FWIW, I'm white, and the only way I can be made to watch Fox is Clockwork Orange style.

If I was not white, Fox news would be a daily demoralization program to be avoided at all costs. If Fox was the do-all end-all voice of white America, I'd fucking hate white America.

But I know a lot of older people live for Fox's poor whitey crap. They parrot Fox's talking points and send out Comic Sans emails warning me about the commies coming to take my guns, how Obama is making sure they'll die horrible deaths neglected by otherwise benevolent physicians, and how the blacks are overtaking the media and getting uppity in general. Fox couldn't be a more effective old people brainwasher if it was prescribed medicine. I've seen many, many go by the wayside lapping it up at Fox's trough of hate and victimhood.

The really ugly part, is they really dig on this shit. It's just what the doctor ordered.

Yeah. It's almost turned into an Obama rage cult. Lots of peer pressure going on to. In order to fit in to the group you have to be outraged about everything Obama does. It's a closed system so they only feed off of themselves.

It reminds me of peer pressure to use hard drugs. Very bad stuff.

Obama exchanges secret sign of the devil with fan!!11ty

Here's what's really going on:

President Barack Obama returns the "I Love You" sign as he greets audience members at an event marking the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilites Act on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Monday, July 26, 2010.

[Link: www.daylife.com...]

But, some people will say it's "teh sekrit symbol of de Okult!" Instead of what it really is, the deaf hand signal for "I love you."

True. Maybe we could do a TV special "Rage Junkie Rehab with Dr. Drew". One of the highlights would be Glenn Beck being dragged away as Dr. Drew sadly notes that "Insanity needs more intensive care to cure than even addiction".

There are real problems with our immigration policy, but one of the answers is more legal immigration. Few on either side seem willing to push that.

Erraticsphinx is correct: People that into hate and conspiracy theories cannot be reasoned with. Only kept at a distance and prevented from hurting others until such time as they are willing to change. Sadly, that time normally cannot be hurried forth by someone else; As with drugs, change cannot happen until the person truly admits they have a problem. Actually, I have only known 1 drag queen. During the early 90s in Denver, he was in the "Queen's Court" during Pride Fest and the rest of the year, he could pass for a Bear, mustache and beard. Also very muscular. And a great masseur. The best legitimate massage I ever had. (No happy ending.) I went out with his apartment manager a few times. She was a cougar and a half.

129 RogueOne  Tue, Jul 27, 2010 9:36:11am

I don't find this very surprising. People watch cable news programming for the same reasons they listen to talk radio, because the on-air personality agrees with their opinions. Black voters vote democratic (98% last election cycle), I'm not surprised that MSNBC (the station with the most liberal hosts) gets the lion share of the viewership.

Right.

That, and the fact that Fox New frequently lies about black people, and indulges in rank race baiting. That tends to drive away black viewers too.

re: #131 Obdicut

re: #130 Charles

That may be true. If it were true that would mean Fox, at one point or another, had a larger share of African-american viewer's which is something the article doesn't argue. I tried google to do a comparison but couldn't find anything that suggests otherwise. Your analysis may be correct but my belief is cable news programs do nothing but preach to the choir which is why I don't generally watch.

133 Obdicut  Tue, Jul 27, 2010 11:13:04am

re: #132 RogueOne

You didn't specify that it had to be a political show, anyway.

Your point, to me, is six of one, half a dozen of another. Your contention is that blacks don't watch Fox because they embrace the GOP, the party currently engaging in race-baiting on an epic scale and openly embraced the Southern Strategy some time ago, rather than because FOX is racist.

What's the difference, exactly?

134 NC Gray  Tue, Jul 27, 2010 1:24:53pm

I don't really see the statistic as strange, I recently read that about 12.5% of Blacks consider themselves conservative, and by the #s (approx. 295,000 black prime time views and 29,000 watching Fox) I don't think that they can get much larger in the Black viewer share.

However, they did not play the Sherrod story until after she had resigned...

Three thoughts:

1> You are "dead thread trolling". (I noticed you on Spy)
2> Your numbers are wrong. For example, per Nielsen, the most popular prime time TV show among blacks would pull between 900,000 and 1,100,000 viewers. See [Link: en-us.nielsen.com...]

And that is just one show. In the free part of their page you can't get total views, but if there are million or so blacks watching one show, then you can reasonably assume that the total universe of black viewers is much higher.

3> Finally, Fox fronted the hit version of the Sherrod video on Foxnews.com before airing it and before the shit hit the fan. It was obvious to all that the Foxnews.com piece was the opening salvo in what would have been an extended campaign.
