The Sacred Hallowed Ground of Temecula

Wingnuts • Views: 3,445

The big right wing talking point against the proposed community center near Ground Zero in Manhattan (I refuse to call it a “Ground Zero Mega-Mosque!”) is that Ground Zero is sacred. Hallowed ground. It’s a deadly offense to think of a mosque on that sacred, hallowed ground, a “stab in the heart” as Sarah Palin so eloquently put it.

Apparently Temecula, California is also sacred ground. Temecula mosque proposal targeted in pending protest.

The Temecula Teabagging Society has advised members who plan to attend their protest against the Ground 3,728 Mega-Mosque to bring their dogs — because “Muslims hate dogs.”

But don’t forget the pooper scooper, folks; wouldn’t want to offend anyone.

An e-mail alert sent to area newspapers last week announced that a one-hour “singing – praying – patriotic rally” will begin at 12:30 p.m. July 30 at the Islamic Center’s existing facility. The advisory – sent by a leader of a conservative coalition that has been active with Republican and Tea Party functions – recommended participants “bring your Bibles, flags, signs, dogs and singing voices.”

“We will not be submissive,” the notice proclaimed. “Our voices are going to be heard!” The alert went on to question what its authors described as Islamic beliefs. It suggested that participants sing during the rally because Muslim “women are forbidden to sing.” It suggested that rally participants bring dogs because Muslims “hate dogs.”

The advisory asked rally participants to “please bring a pooper scooper” if they are accompanied by a canine companion. The advisory said residents of an unspecified Tennessee community were able to halt the construction of a mosque in that state.

Temecula? Seriously?

I would have expected Turlock, maybe…

2 windsagio  Tue, Jul 27, 2010 6:13:35pm

oops, looks like their slip is showing!

PS: The idea that ground zero is some sort of ‘holy ground’ is deeply offensive anyways.

Wake me when they decide to have a protest based around dressing really skimpily, and since Muslim Women are suppose to always be covered.

Yeah. Give the radicals the holy war they’re looking for. Great idea.

Does this qualify as racism? Or is it merely religious intolerance? My guess is that those bringing dogs are doing so because it supposedly scares the scary dark people.

Just really repulsive people feeling their oats lately, and it’s going to get worse. Amazing that it wasn’t 9/11 that triggered this environment, it was electing Obama.

Idiots. The Muslim ban on dogs is by no means universal. Most American Muslim families probably have no problem with dogs and dog ownership is probably pretty close to the national average.

No, her problem started before the construction. The vet said both cats are physically fine. We still have no clue what the problem was. The only thing we could think of is that since I’ve been kinda injured and laid up the past week that she just might be bored and starved for attention.

re: #55 windsagio

I think many many people were deeply shocked (and understandably) by 9/11. It naturally takes some time to recover from that kind of national trauma. Its not surprising that more and more people are adjusting as time goes on.

Obviously there is an adjustment needed on both sides. The Islamists who hate America would really find most Americans quite pleasant.

That’s a fine point. But I’m not hoping much with these idiots. After 9 years, you’ll separate anger from bigotry.

That one’s still making the rounds. About a year ago a friend on another forum said he got it, but the sight of naked women was supposed to make the terrorists commit suicide.

I told him if that was the case, then we could’ve just had naked women parachute into Afghanistan. Would’ve saved a lot of money & lives.

She wrote back to the person who sent this, pointing out some logistical flaws with the plan, and was reproved for trying to stomp on the feelings of the American people.

Ah, yes, now THAT one, requiring me to stand unseen in the dark, I did get.

Zawahari threatens more US attacks; former State Dept employee points out that there is recurring pattern of threats with exactly zero correlation between the threats and anything, you know, actually ever happening.

Zawahari must be feeling mighty impotent these days.

I think our gov’t is doing what it needs to do to keep us safe.

Hold that thought. So far, so good!

OK, cleaning out my pantry, I find MRE’s we got during a power outage after Gustav a couple of years ago, they have a year left.

We’ve got:
Meatloaf with Gravy
Cheese & Veggie Omelet
Chicken Breast
Chili with beans
Veggie Burger w/ BBQ sauce, vegetarian meal
and
Pork Ribs.

Anyone curious about an MRE and just dying to try one?
shoot me an e-mail.

Those sound a whole lot better than the ones we had when I was still in. Those were scary. Got any left? I’d love them.

And greatly cheered up the troops on the ground.

But wouldn’t you get scraped up all to hell hitting the ground while nekkid? Maybe they should jump, land, and then strip.

(Does anyone remember the Malcolm in the Middle episode where Reese lied about his age to join the Army, and then got sent to Afghanistan?)

Randy Wordell Bowen, 31, who is black, was beaten and slashed during a 1999 St. Patrick’s Day party in a rural area known as Murdock’s, east of Temecula. Bowen was first hit from behind while near a bonfire, then slashed across his back with a sharp object that was never found and chased as his attackers yelled racial slurs.
Bowen ran for about a half mile in the dark before finally getting help at a ranch. One resident there called 911 and another went outside with a shotgun to chase away the large group chasing Bowen.

Six members of the Western Hammerskins were ultimately sent to prison in connection with the attack.

Hammerskins. What the hell is that? Oh yeah, the attackers family were also found liable in civil court for providing material support for the skins actions.

The advisory asked rally participants to “please bring a pooper scooper” if they are accompanied by a canine companion. The advisory said residents of an unspecified Tennessee community were able to halt the construction of a mosque in that state.

I’m guessing the unspecified Tennessee community is Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The sign for the proposed mosque expansion there was vandalized twice, once with a spray painted “Not Welcome”.

A local GOP congressional candidate said the following:

One of three leading Republican candidates for Tennessee’s 6th congressional district denounced a planned Islamic Center.

Lou Ann Zelenik issued a statement Thursday evening saying she stands with those opposed to building what she calls “an Islamic training center.” She says the center is not part of a religious movement, but a political one “designed to fracture the moral and political foundation of Middle Tennessee.”

Protests were held:
[Link: www.tennessean.com…]

Plans for a new Islamic center south of Murfreesboro have some residents denouncing the Muslim religion and others calling the dispute one of the ugliest displays of religious intolerance in the county’s history.

Questions of whether the public was given adequate notice about the proposed mosque and community center off Bradyville Pike quickly turned into attacks on the Muslim faith during the public comment portion of Thursday’s Rutherford County Commission meeting.

“Everybody knows they are trying to kill us,” Karen Harrell said. “People are really concerned about this. Somebody has to stand up and take this country back.”

[Link: abcnews.go.com…]

Some at the Thursday meeting wore religious or patriotic-themed clothing, and no one defended the plan in two hours of public comments, the Tennessean newspaper reported.

“They seem to be against everything that I believe in, and so I don’t want them necessarily in my neighborhood spreading that type of comment,” said one man at the meeting.

Tracey Steven, who also attended, said, “Our country was founded through the founding fathers — through the true God, the Father and Jesus Christ.”

The whole sordid tale is document here:

Hey, DF! How ya’ doin’ tonight?

I’m doing OK. I had frustrating day today but one of my deals closed, netting me 20% commission (the rate was higher than normal today, an incentive they run at work sometimes). I then went to dinner with my parents, which went fairly well.

re: #292 BryanS

Hating Islam is not tribalism and racism, it is religious discrimination. And appeals to the Christian religion make it clear the hatred is about religious bigotry.

I don’t think this is fueled by that, though.

My argument:

if it was about islam itself? it would have been worse after 9.11. If it’s about paranoia and reaction about a black president being muslim, then it’s worse after Obama’s election. It’s way worse now. it’s way crazier.

Certainly there IS religious discrimination, but this isn’t a my-religion-their-religion. The core of this is “the other”. And it takes many forms, Obama’s a muslim, Obama’s a dictator, Obama’s not really the president, illegal aliens, Van Jones, ACORn, Sherrod, all this stuff, all this othering that’s music to the ears of far right wing Americans. it’s much simpler than religious differences. Far more base. far more primal. It’s sorta like this is the end game of the Southern Strategy. This is the doomsday device. They just let the bigot flag fly, stop even trying to hide it.

Islam as a religion? that’s a handle on the thing, it’s not the whole thing. it’s one tool used to other.

Gee what could possibly go wrong?

“It’s happened to all of us. The night starts off innocently enough with a little gin and tonic, maybe a mojito, then next thing you know you’re doing tequila shots with the bartender and the girl from Brazil and you find yourself thinking it would be a treMENdous idea to call up your ex and see how they’re doing and perhaps impress them with your newfound wit.

We’ve got the cure. Now, instead of drunk dialing random friends, lovers, and acquaintances one at a time, what if you could dial your blog and talk to the whole world at once? It’d be like something out of Star Trek.

The future is now, folks. You can now go to your My Blogs tab, enable Post by Voice, and get a special number and code to call your blog. After you’re done, the audio file from your phone call will be posted to your blog for all to listen to and enjoy. (And added to your RSS feed for podcast support.)”

if american politicians give tacit approval to this, it happens. People listen, people think some family center for muslims is a “training center” (which of course implies terrorist training), because this shitbag Lt Governor says so, and some swine goes and burns it down and toasts himself as a patriot.

So my next question is the next time this happens and someone is actually killed in the arson, will the media actually pay attention?

me, I’ve just about reached the end with the company i’ve been with lo these many years, and although i’d much rather stay in Jax, it seems like there’s a sweet gig with my name on it in every city except Jacksonville.

my wife is going to be pissed that i’m giving up on Jacksonville. i like moving, seeing new places, meeting new people. she, on the other hand, would greatly prefer to just settle down and never move again.

I thought you were in California! haha that was sort of the premise, I thought you were in CA, and moving to Tennessee

re: #303 WindUpBird

It wasn’t as bad as it could be because evil Bushitler&trade went out of his way to speak out against reprisals. As a fundie himself, that went a long way towards tamping down a potential backlash. Time has passed, though. The current occupant of the oval office is not a fundie, and viewed as a political enemy by the fundies. I think that explains the delayed reaction so to speak.

I don’t disagree with most of that, but when I first came here some years ago it did seem, from many now flounced, that it was one religion against another. They are still out there I would guess.

That’s blog commenters!

Blog commenters I would agree are way more likely to make it about the religion, that’s the intellectual attack.

Average joe who would never spend hours at a computer arguing on blogs, far less so.

We’ve been working at the restaurant alot because many of the cooks and one of the night managers wanted this week off. My husband (the Persian) was cooking and most of the people are regulars who know who he is and that he’s the owner. This couple in their 60’s sat down and they were given their drinks and the waitress asked what they would like to order. The man said loudly “I’m not going to order if that Arab is going to cook it, make sure that black guy cooks it!” A customer was sitting at the bar, who is over 6 feet and weighs quite a bit, he a biker, and quite a few bikers hang out there besides cops. My husband said he almost jumped over the counter because it was going to get ugly fast. My husband put his arm around the biker’s shoulder and told him “I’ve got this” and then he sent me over to talk to the elderly couple. Man those Muslims are scary.

I have been elsewhere lately, but I saw a few of those.

I can be critical of Islam but the problem is doing so, these days particularly, without being accused of “hate”. There is a spiritual aspect to all religions, and there are political and cultural dimensions that have nothing to do with personal spirituality.

I have no problem with the former whatever its form, as long as it remains personal.

I go to the local YMCA for swimming, and Haku the medical service dog comes with.

It’s a predominantly black neighborhood and there are lots of Muslim converts there.

Occasionally I’ve had one look askance at a dog being in the locker room, but Haku always wins them over. When I tell them what he does for me, they praise Allah (as I praise God) who thought up and made the dog.

There are plenty of Muslims around here, and I honestly don’t know where they go to pray. But if they wanted to take over one of the many abandoned churches around here and build a mosque, how could I in good conscience oppose it?

Yeah, if it was a Hezbollah-funded mosque, of course. But otherwise?

I met a Muslim guy in the neighborhood who sells Indian incense on the street. He gave me a good deal, and when I thanked him, his reply was, “There is no me without you.”

We can work it out.

Unless you honestly think a terror plot will be hatched at either of these mosques (manhattan and temecula), then the opposition to them boils down to nothing more than religious animus.

Discussion of “respecting the victims’ families” or “hallowed ground” is just code for anti-Muslim bigotry. But we’ve heard a lot of code recently, haven’t we?

“Protect our borders” and “Turn back the clock to the days of the founders” also seem coded, but hey, maybe I’m just being too sensitive about the people who claim they love America more than I do.

Jacksonville ‘burbs. So i know i’m giving up the beach, nothing i can do about that. But low taxes, reasonable real estate, and a relatively sane suburbia are really all that i’m looking for. I’ve already done the expensive-city-with-kids (Chicago).

Say what you want about the ‘burbs, they often offer enough population to make friends without the difficulty, cramped quarters, or crime which can combine to make some cities a suboptimal place to live for a family with younger kids.

That’s another BIG problem with this movie. There was a number of musical parody scenes, but The Kids in the Hall are clueless when it comes to music… absolutely NO MUSICAL TALENT WHAT SO EVER.

You don’t do musical parody unless you really are talented as a musician, or singer, or dancer… making believe at it looks like… make believe… not funny at all… sloppy and embarrassing.

I wonder if any of these people have ever been to a mosque. Somehow I doubt it.

Every Muslim I know is fully aware that at least one person at their local mosque is probably an FBI (or other law enforcement) employee or informant who’s there to keep an eye on things. Weird that these other people don’t seem to think about that.

That’s because they’re morons.

On the bright side, at least there will be a federal agent around if these folks act out badly.

I love that story. When I was a teenager many moons ago my mom and I used to frequent an Egyptian market in our neighborhood. And they were by far the most generous store owners we ever knew. I know this because we were very poor and they frequently let us buy on credit and let us pay back when we could and with what we could. I’ll always be grateful for that spirit of generosity.

Have you ever seen any Flight of the Concords episodes? It’s an HBO series but i believe that one can rent the season DVD’s…i have never seen such a consistently brilliant and hilarious set of off-beat musical scenes.

Found this at IMDB… even Dave Foley didn’t like it…

“Dave Foley originally had a much larger role in the writing of the script and in the film, with more characters and scenes. But he quit the troupe in the middle of the writing, due to his dissatisfaction with the script and the internal feuds, was cast in “NewsRadio” (1995) and was featured in the movie due to contractual reasons. After years of denial from the five Kids, Dave Foley came clear about his involvement with “Brain Candy” in an interview with “The Onion A.V. Club” in 2004. “

I don’t think you need a mosque to hatch a terror plot.

OT: Our city council just voted to start charging for garbage pick-up. I watched the meeting on our local channel because I just knew it was going to be entertaining. There was a large amount of teeth-gnashing. One of the council members, a very reasonable man, asked the rest of the council if they had an alternatives to do something about our town’s sizeable debt. Of course, not a one of them had a single idea.
The fun came when people in the audience started screaming about new taxes. He tried to explain to them that his was a fee, not a tax. They would hear none of that. This was a new tax in their eyes. In other words, they want a service, but they don’t want to pay for it with a tax or a fee. It’s not like I’m on a liberal island here, either. This is deep red country. re: #469 tnguitarist

Property taxes. That was their choice; raise property taxes or pay a fee.

Speaking of garbage collection… we have a neighbor who, in my opinion, shouldn’t be living up here. Her husband is a dentist, they have more money than god (which is fine), but really… lady, if you have a bear strutting through your neighborhood, guess what, the dogs are going to bark… and garbage may get redistributed.

Yesterday morning (Monday)… she comes over to our house with a bag of garbage, with a snide remark… “you all had tuna sandwiches for supper last night?”

Of course we did, and of course she knew the bag of garbage was ours and then she goes into a diatribe how our two dogs backed for 3 hours. Well, they didn’t bark for three hours, they barked for about 20 minute, and every dog in a mile were barking.

Our neighborhood bear was stalking around, stealing garbage and generally tearing things apart. Lady… this is the rural mountains of Colorado… they’re are bears, and dog naturally bark at bears, and scare them away.

Happens two-three times a week. Sometimes you even get to meet the bear outside your house, at that point you walk slowly away and back into your house.

But you don’t complain when you neighbors dog is doing it’s job. Maybe she would be happy with a bear making a home invasion… her home, because she had forced everyone in the area to keep their dogs inside.

Jerk.

So a city that had problems with Mormons building a house of worship a few years ago now has problems with Muslims doing so. Sounds like an indictment of all conservatives and Republicans everywhere! Or just Podunk provincialism.

Those who actually do live within blocks of the place may want to inquire about the sound level of the call to prayer and such, but American Muslims have been accommodating and accommodated for decades. This sounds like its funded by the local congregants, not Saudi money. This appears to be the sort of assimilation we should welcome.

That part of Riverside county is pretty concentrated with SoCons. And speaking of bears, and garbage, and neighbors, time to sleep. Going down hill tomorrow to Home Depot to look over some new garbage cans… the ones we have are kind of beat up (yes, from bears) and I need to buy something I can retrofit with some sort of mechanism so I can make it at least a bit bear resistant… keep the lid on it…

Don’t let the merchants fool you… short of building a cement enclosure or some kind of fenced enclosure, nothing is going to stop the bears from getting what they want… but locked lids will discourage them sometimes.

We used to pay the fee years ago. The sanitation department has been running in red for decades, but everyone has been too scared to impose a fee. It was long over due.

Interesting. So either revenue has gone down, or expenses have gone up, but the service is not new. So it’s not really like the citizens want something for free. They’ve been receiving the service. The provider (city) has not been funding it properly, or has lost a revenue stream.

You’re right - either a fee or higher taxes.

These are offshoots of the “Jesus freaks” of the late 60’s and early 70’s that were organized around Orange County by Chuck Smith.

Their claim to fame was their non-denominationality. However, IMO they are in practice a denomination. Essentially pentecostal types who didn’t want to associate with the snake handlers and the old time pentecostals, nor were comfortable with the Southern Baptist type of denominations.

Extremely religious and highly influenced by theocratic teachings. Chuck Misler became their leading theologian after Chuck Smith.

There are many denominations influenced by Smith and Calvary Chapel that don’t carry their brand name, such as Horizon here in SD that was, I thought, at one time the largest congregation in town.

I want to weight in on the “near” ground zero “community center”.
The last I heard this “community center” was going to include a mosque.
Calling it a “community center” that just happens to have a mosque in it, doesn’t strike me as being meaningfully communicative.
The addition of a swimming pool, meditation center, snack bar, restaurant, gym, ice-cream parlor, convenience store, bowling alley or VCR repair shop won’t change the fact that a mosque is being built. They can build a mosque if they desire. In America, building permits are not subject to religious oversight, so build away guys. But don’t try to blow smoke up my butt. The converse of this is; if there is no mosque and people are complaining that (gasp) actual Muslims have the audacity to exist in New York where Bin Laden-bots sent all sorts of good people to their makers…- well THOSE complainers can go… to some country where religious persecution is appreciated. There are several, but they ( the complainers) won’t be happy.
Bottom line;
1. If a mosque is being built.. shut up.
2. If a mosque is not being built.. shut the fuck up.
3. A mosque is a frickin’ mosque, no matter how much other crap you stack on it.

And about the “dog” protest against the Temecula, California mosque. If these guys had pigs on leases against a synagogue, the outrage would be heard all over the world. The Temecula protest marks those teabaggers as bigots, plain and simple.
But a mosque, doesn’t become a community center when you load it up with bells and whistles.

55 gallon drum. Weld or bolt a hinge to the lid. Weld or bolt a padlock hasp to the other side. Do not buy a padlock, but get a simple snaphook. It’s heavy, so you will need a dolly, or a dead lawn mower. Put the bags inside the drum. The garbage man will open the drum and take out the bags. Community centres or community centers are public locations where members of a community may gather for group activities, social support, public information, and other purposes. They may sometimes be open for the whole community or for a specialised group within the greater community. Examples of community centres for specific groups include: Christian community centres, Islamic community centres, Jewish community centres, youth clubs etc.

PROGRESS. The powerful prince.

In a single day he is granted audience three times.

As an example of progress, this pictures a time when a powerful feudal lord rallies the other lords around the sovereign and pledges fealty and peace. The sovereign rewards him richly and invites him to a closer intimacy.

Nine in the fourth place means:
Progress like a hamster.
Perseverance brings danger.

In times of progress it is easy for strong men in the wrong places to amass great possessions. But such conduct shuns the light. And since times of progress are also always times in which dubious procedures are inevitably brought to light, perseverance in such action always leads to danger.

If the store stocks all of those, though, it’s a grocery store. Or a corner store. Not a condom store.

You got your analogy backwards, and kinda got disproof all over you.

Heh.

Oh COME ON dude, you’re talking to a guy with like 2000 metal records in his collection. Classic Queensryche is like Maiden squared. if you don’t call old-school Ryche metal, then you can’t call Maiden metal

What do you call this, exactly? :D

It sure ain’t Lynyrd Skynyrd! I’d go with you that Post-Empire stuff isn’t metal, but the classic stuff definitely is.

Hey, it’s totally my problem. I accept that. It’s just that after hearing this…

Come on, man…

Community centres or community centers are public locations where members of a community may gather for group activities, social support, public information, and other purposes. They may sometimes be open for the whole community or for a specialised group within the greater community. Examples of community centres for specific groups include: Christian community centres, Islamic community centres, Jewish community centres, youth clubs etc.

I have been to Christian community centers. I don’t know how welcome atheists, Jews, or Muslims would feel. The ones I have been to seemed awfilly churchy. But I have only been to a few.

it was their big #1 hit, it’s true! It sold them millions of records, then they recorded Promised Land (which was spotty, but the cosmic Floyd-esque tracks kicked mighty ass) and then the people who wanted more Silent Lucidity got grim and menacing pathos instead and left :D

That would be great. But it doesn’t change the purpose of the building. An evangelical mosque is not a bad thing. I would even say that it is a good thing. But it is still a mosque. And I heartily approve of denominations of all kinds using persuasion as a recruitment tool.
Much better than burning heretics, stoning adulterers, or throwing people off buildings. A mosque with a cultural center could certainly find a place in New York. And it could allay the fears of those who think that all Muslims have horns and want to take our bacon away.
