Fact Checking 101. I can't believe a quality news outlet like the Daily Star would make such a mistake!!!

ON 21 July we published an article claiming that the video games company Rockstar Games were planning to release a version of their popular Grand Theft Auto video games series titled “Grand Theft Auto Rothbury”.

We also published what we claimed would be the cover of this game, solicited comments from a family member impacted by the recent tragedy and criticised Rockstar Games for their alleged plans.

We made no attempt to check the accuracy of the story before publication and did not contact Rockstar Games prior to publishing the story. We also did not question why a best selling and critically acclaimed fictional games series would choose to base one of their most popular games on this horrifying real crime event.

It is now accepted that there were never any plans by Rockstar Games to publish such a game and that the story was false. We apologise for publishing the story using a mock-up of the game cover, our own comments on the matter and soliciting critical comments from a grieving family member.

We unreservedly apologise to Rockstar Games and we have undertaken not to repeat the claims again. We have also agreed to pay them a substantial amount in damages which they are donating to charity.

Since we're on the subject of videos - how about a nighttime bison jam (and it even sounds like a band name). I shot that video this past May in Yellowstone on the Madison to West Yellowstone Road. A grizzly bear had charged at a herd of more than 100 bison, scattering them and sending most of them on to the road.

I'm not entirely sure of that. But note that even in the prior worst attack on US soil (highest death toll) - Pearl Harbor - it took more than a decade to work out a design and build the Pearl Harbor memorial over the USS Arizona. The USS Arizona memorial was dedicated in 1962. That's 21 years after the attack, and more than a decade following the first call to build a Pacific war memorial. The 9/11 memorial should be ready by 9/11 next year (10th anniversary). The Freedom Tower is now about 30 stories tall, and work is proceeding all over the site. They're even getting the tower crane assembled for Fiterman Hall this week so that they can begin raising steel there (Fiterman Hall was damaged by the collapse of the WTC and 7WTC).

Now we hear "hallowed ground" all the time as an excuse for intolerance, and the memorial is more important than the rebuilding. I know, there are dozens of factors involved...the City of New York, the Port Authority, politics, and of course the very real psychological damage the attack did to many (I know a number of people who still refuse to fly). What is pissing me off now are the bigots who are pouring salt in America's wounds to help foment fear and hatred toward muslims.

I've long covered the development hell of trying to rebuild at Ground Zero. You had the Port Authority's own design for master plan widely panned - even as many people were hoping to see the Twin Towers rebuilt (albeit with modern design and safety improvements). That led to Gov. Pataki stepping in and calling for a design competition that resulted in Libeskind's master plan getting adopted even though he never did anything of the size and scope involved. And his designs proved ultimately unworkable for 1WTC - so SOM and David Childs ended up designing 1WTC/Freedom Tower in a pyrimidal shape (tapered obelisk).

The key design decisions that have put us in this position today:
1) the demand to reunite the street grid through the site - even though those streets would never be used for commercial traffic because of security concerns - and which reduces the available space for park and memorial on the site.
2) the decision not to build 2 supertall skyscrapers (a twin towers approach), which means that massing for the office space would end up creating a corridor of skyscrapers along Church instead of a wider plaza and memorial/park space. Yamazaki, who designed the original WTC complex hit on the twin towers approach as a way to maximize the office space and maximize open space at their base. Instead, you've got more buildings and not as much dedicated to memorial or museum space.
3) the decision to go with Libeskind resulted in multiple delays as his designs ended up being unworkable and significantly rejiggered. While the general idea for where to place the various components at Ground Zero are his - the designs of those structures are not. The one benefit of this was that various architects like Norman Foster were able to proffer superior designs.
4) the delays in getting construction underway meant that the credit crisis would hit reconstruction hard and extends the delays and rebuilding period significantly.
5) a refusal by state and local politicians to demand that the pace of work be increased and that federal funds (hey stimulus money) be used to get the work underway and completed - these are actual shovel ready projects that are already in design phase and all that is lacking is the financing in place to build - and if you build it - the tenants will come. Staggering the construction makes completed space in the complex less attractive because of ongoing construction.
6) the mess with the former Deutsche bank building.

The protest is just the latest in a series of provocative actions from the self-described "New Testament Church," which seems as interested in getting attention as it is in sharing the Word with the world. Unfortunately, their plan seems to have worked -- and local investigators have begun probing the church's tax-exempt status after reports that Dove World Outreach Center is essentially a scam.

You should be optimistic... you have science on your side. Information about how the environment could mitigate a good percentage of this spill has been available from the start, but it has not received the same coverage in the media.

Remember those videos of thousand of workers lining the beaches, dump trucks queued up, hauling sand off, pictures of rows of hotels and resorts with "for sale" signs and the day after day protests up and down the gulf coast by concerned environmental groups.

I imagine if one were to do some deep background, this guy would end up affiliated with those organizations that caused the first LGF purges...BNP and the like. That movement, mostly in Europe, is designed to destroy Islam, it looks to me like this guy came to Florida, started with ideas that some Christians agree with (gay, abortion), the went heavily into the anti-Islam stuff.
I agree that there are some sects of Christianity that are 'exclusive', but the majority of Christians are inclusive, both in church and in life.

The news "OMG we're all gonna dieeeee" news reports (not the actual oil) contributed a lot to the loss of income for Ala and Fla summer rentals; and they had minimal problems on their beaches. Most beaches were perfectly OK to visit, the whole time. The activity level was low in those areas because there wasn't that much to do.

I did post some things about how the environment itself can take care of itself - I posted about natural seepages, I posted about the evaporation rate of this oil and about how conditions here are good for rapid evaporation (different from Alaska).

I also posted about how activity going on matched, pretty much, what was needed. I posted about the skimmers not being used because either they were not needed, or were not effective for this spill.

I was also very careful to post what I knew to be accurate. One of the biggest problems has been BP itself - getting BP to pay up on their claims.

Anyhow - all of that has a history in the Pages. I'm just not sure how much attention anyone was paying to it.

What I read about mostly has a dispensary surrounded by three or four store-front doctors prescribing for any type of pain. An NPR 'reporter' dropped into one in Colorado, answered a few questions, and was given a prescription.
Should I even care?

It's a statement that is literally vague but can be implied in an infinite number of ways. You can dump 100,000 tons of Cesium or Plutonium in there and 'nature will correct itself' in a half life of 23,000 years.

I don't think we'll know how long it will take for another year or so. I suspect the effects will last decades(s) but hope I am wrong.

Heh. She is absolutely correct. I've posted about the moratorium.
I have also posted items about Landrieu, and I've also posted about the fact that even though the moratorium is all about deep-water, in actuality no permits at all have been issued.

Anyhoo - from 6/1 through today, there are a ton of things there, in the Pages, that I've put up, with my own commentary where appropriate. Again, the biggest scandal, IMO, in all of this is BP - their actions prior to the blowout, and their actions afterward, in their failure to cooperate with gov't agencies as regards claims, which they are not paying as they should.

Most fishing areas are open.

And, there is continuous inspection of the catch, federal & state level, to ensure it's safe to eat. Many of the closures were pre-emptive in nature, rather than OMG this stuff is totally polluted!

Beaches were unaffected, mostly, because the lighter stuff was evaporating before it hit land.

Much of the oil has evaporated, which is why the stopped being able to find it when they got the flow stopped. NOAA hasn't even found in underwater plumes (from a page I put up yesterday).
The remaining goo washing up onto the beaches can be cleaned up before it sinks into anything.

I suspect in 6 months, news organizations will be oh-so-surprised at how quickly things got back to normal.

Well, except for the lives of the people directly affected. The moratorium and also the lack of permits being issued for ANY wells (including shallow) is bad news, economically, for those folks. That will be the most difficult long-term effect.

If I had the disposable income to burn right now, I'd seriously consider going, even alone, despite the fact that I'm not a fan of Nevada's intense summer heat. I'd dine at Battista's Hole in the Wall, take dessert at the Paris, and enjoy heavy drinks at the Strat. Visit the Dam, museum of natural history, and take in a show. Maybe some gambling. I hope you are correct and think there's a likelihood that you're right. The shock waves and impacts to the regional economy may last longer than the environmental issues.

I suspect there will be some large blobs or areas where some oil may rest or coagulate into a static state, only to occasionally be stirred up by a storm or some other isssue. Fishing may be more tightly controlled around those areas. I hope that is the worst of it.

CVS is a notional chain so they can't sell weed. It's still against Federal law even if states legalize it. Local dispesnaries won't be raided be the local police dept but the Feds can still walk in and arrest everybody if they want to.

I suppose doctors could overperscribe weed if they want to but they do the same thing with medicines from the big pharmaceutical companies too. I don't see a big difference.

I am not in any way being dismissive of the horror of this oil spill; 11 people died, and the lives of countless others have been disrupted. It did not have to happen; it happened because BP ignored warning signs, and chose to try the stupidest thing evah when they displaced heavy mud keeping the oil at bay, with seawater which allowed everything to spew.

The BOP is a secondary issue, really. The main issue was BP's operating decisions. The BOP would never have come into play if BP had made correct decisions to begin with.

Yeah, there are some real good deals for Vegas hotels. Heck, you can get a room at the Strat for $39 a night. Midweek at Treasure Island can run ~$77 through most of August (much higher weekends). Monte Carlo has $46 a night rooms next week.

The prices are almost too good to pass up if you can take the summer heat.

Agreed. What happened was horrible, and there is a lot to consider in regards to responsibility and how to try to prevent future tragedies like this.

But, on the flip side, it's very interesting when science is supportive of agendas, the media is all over it. But the same sort of good solid science is ignored as soon as it may possibly rock the agenda boat.

That's what happened here. The media was all over this like ants on molasses, and so were scientists, and there were numerous early reports that examined the possibilities from one spectrum to the other.

But all we got from the mainstream media, and the politicians -who tried to boost their agendas on this horse, all we got was the downside, the radical enviro screamers... and as soon as science took over, and the impact was fortunately less than expected by some people, the media high-tailed it out of their... leaving the gulf once again to it's self, with no real concern about the results.

The media and agenda driven people are only concerned with the citizenry when the pictures suit their purpose. As soon as the story can't sell, or the agenda can't be advanced... poof!

Agreed. What happened was horrible, and there is a lot to consider in regards to responsibility and how to try to prevent future tragedies like this.

But, on the flip side, it's very interesting when science is supportive of agendas, the media is all over it. But the same sort of good solid science is ignored as soon as it may possibly rock the agenda boat.

That's what happened here. The media was all over this like ants on molasses, and so were scientists, and there were numerous early reports that examined the possibilities from one spectrum to the other.

But all we got from the mainstream media, and the politicians -who tried to boost their agendas on this horse, all we got was the downside, the radical enviro screamers... and as soon as science took over, and the impact was fortunately less than expected by some people, the media high-tailed it out of their... leaving the gulf once again to it's self, with no real concern about the results.

The media and agenda driven people are only concerned with the citizenry when the pictures suit their purpose. As soon as the story can't sell, or the agenda can't be advanced... poof!

Excellent points, all of them.

I would temper them, however, a bit by saying that this whole thing is very complicated, and the media was not always given the best possible information by experts.

And, all of what you said is why I have (right now a very minor) concern about the make-up of the panel the President put together to look at this event.

That panel is a great one for looking at mitigation and clean-up sorts of issues.

But I truly believe they need a second panel, with experts who can speak authoritatively about the mechanical processes of drilling and prevention of these incidents.

So, I'll be watching to see what this panel does - they very well may get some drilling and prevention experts involved.

From what i've heard and as WSB said:

Marcelle Elliott, 21, disappeared after visiting friends on Lovvorn Road in Carrollton Thursday night, her family said. Family members said Elliot was home for the summer in Cobb County and vanished while leaving one friend's place to see another.

Investigators said they have recovered Elliot’s car. It was found parked in the same spot where she left it while in Carrollton, authorities said. Police said they have no reason to suspect foul play but that they aren’t ruling anything out. There hasn't been any phone or debit card use on Elliot's accounts since Thursday, police said.

Michigan Tea Party gets on the ballot. Teabaggers (aka GOP) are pee-issed off.

Official teabagger spokesmen and the Michigan Republican Party say the ballot effort is a scam by Democrats, meant to draw support away from Republicans.

The petitions to make the Tea Party a formal political party in Michigan were submitted by a group led by Mark Steffek of Reese, located in Tuscola County.

Both Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer and Steffek's attorney, Michael Hodge, say the Democratic Party has nothing to do with the group. In a recent Detroit Free Press article, Steffek — a retired United Auto Workers shop steward — said he hadn't attended tea party gatherings but described himself as an independent concerned with issues such as free trade, deficit spending and government debt.

The "real" teabaggers are not pleased. "We are not convinced (Steffek) is a true tea partier," said Jim Lefler, a Kalamazoo resident and board member of the Southwest Michigan Tea Party Patriots. "We are the real Tea Party."

Yeah, it's a dKos diary, but it's still a good read.
