the man-moth, by elizabeth bishop
Here, above,
cracks in the buldings are filled with battered moonlight.
The whole shadow of Man is only as big as his hat.
It lies at his feet like a circle for a doll to stand on,
and he makes an inverted pin, the point magnetized to the moon.
He does not see the moon; he observes only her vast properties,
feeling the queer light on his hands, neither warm nor cold,
of a temperature impossible to records in thermometers.
But when the Man-Moth
pays his rare, although occasional, visits to the surface,
the moon looks rather different to him. He emerges
from an opening under the edge of one of the sidewalks
and nervously begins to scale the faces of the buildings.
He thinks the moon is a small hole at the top of the sky,
proving the sky quite useless for protection.
He trembles, but must investigate as high as he can climb.
Up the façades,
his shadow dragging like a photographer's cloth behind him
he climbs fearfully, thinking that this time he will manage
to push his small head through that round clean opening
and be forced through, as from a tube, in black scrolls on the light.
(Man, standing below him, has no such illusions.)
But what the Man-Moth fears most he must do, although
he fails, of course, and falls back scared but quite unhurt.
Then he returns
to the pale subways of cement he calls his home. He flits,
he flutters, and cannot get aboard the silent trains
fast enough to suit him. The doors close swiftly.
The Man-Moth always seats himself facing the wrong way
and the train starts at once at its full, terrible speed,
without a shift in gears or a gradation of any sort.
He cannot tell the rate at which he travels backwards.
Each night he must
be carried through artificial tunnels and dream recurrent dreams.
Just as the ties recur beneath his train, these underlie
his rushing brain. He does not dare look out the window,
for the third rail, the unbroken draught of poison,
runs there beside him. He regards it as a disease
he has inherited the susceptibility to. He has to keep
his hands in his pockets, as others must wear mufflers.
If you catch him,
hold up a flashlight to his eye. It's all dark pupil,
an entire night itself, whose haired horizon tightens
as he stares back, and closes up the eye. Then from the lids
one tear, his only possession, like the bee's sting, slips.
Slyly he palms it, and if you're not paying attention
he'll swallow it. However, if you watch, he'll hand it over,
cool as from underground springs and pure enough to drink.

Well, I take this story as an indicator of just how out of hand the region in Mexico across the border from the US is getting:
US closes its consulate in Ciudad Juarez
[Link: www.bbc.co.uk...]
"The US has closed indefinitely its consulate in Ciudad Juarez, the Mexican city worst affected by the drugs war being fought by rival gangs.
A statement from the US embassy in Mexico City said the consulate would remain shut until a security review is completed.
In 2009, more than 2,600 people died in drug-related violence in Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.
A US official said the consulate had closed following a "credible threat".
A statement on the consulate's website advised American citizens to avoid the area around the building.
The consulate is the only place handling applications for US residency from Mexican citizens.
The consulate also closed for several days in March after three people - a US employee, her husband and the husband of another staff member - were murdered by gunmen linked to the drugs cartels.
In the wake of the shootings, the US State Department authorised employees at some of the six consulates in Mexico to send family members out of the area.
In April, an explosive device was thrown at the US consulate in Nuevo Laredo, causing some damage but no injuries."

Suspect mail found at US embassy in Paris
[Link: www.bbc.co.uk...]
"A number of employees at the US embassy in France have been taken for medical check-ups after a suspect package was identified at the embassy's mail room, reports say.
Reports say at least two employees were receiving medical attention after opening mail in the embassy, but no other details have been released.
"We have no indication that anyone is in danger or hurt," embassy spokesman Paul Patin said.
The police are investigating, he said."
Developing story......

The false teeth were specially designed to preserve Churchill's natural lisp, which can still be heard on the morale-boosting radio broadcasts he made to the nation during World War II.
Churchill also used them to vent his frustration when the 1939-45 conflict was not going well by dramatically flicking them out of his mouth, according to Nigel Cudlipp, whose father made the dentures and who is now selling them.
"My father recounted many stories of Churchill putting his thumb behind the front of the teeth and just flicking them," Mr Cudlipp told BBC radio.

"Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

A pox on both their houses - the farce on the Hill.
Along nearly party lines, a measure to provide compensation for Ground Zero workers fell, with all but 12 Republicans voting against the measure and all but 5 Democrats voting for the measure. The $7.4 billion would have gone to treatment, compensation, and expanding the Victim Compensation Fund.
But the Republicans aren't alone in this mess. Democrats deserve all the scorn and derision that can be mustered for protecting the likes of Charles Rangel for more than 2 years over the rising stench of corruption, ethics violations, tax evasion, and other legal issues. Instead of forcing him out the door, they protected him for more than a year and a half, and only recently conceded that he should no longer be Chair of House Ways and Means.
The party out of power thinks that it can act as irresponsibly as it wants without repercussion while the party in power thinks that it can do as it pleases without concern for voters or the law.
A pox on both their houses.

Lots of encouraging news, for us along the Gulf at least.
The oil seems to have disappeared; once they got the gushing under control, the hot conditions in the Gulf seem to have caused a lot of evaporation plus there was some cooperation from the currents; and the President's panel has asked for a review as to whether or not the moratorium is truly necessary for safety reasons.

Why? Rush seems like the idiot to me. I wasn't a big fan of the GM bailout but....
“Look, Rush Limbaugh and others wanted to walk away. Rush Limbaugh and others saw a million people that worked at these factories, that worked at these parts suppliers, that had — that supported communities, and thought we should all just walk away. The president didn’t think that walking away from a million jobs in these communities made a lot of economic sense,” Gibbs said.
If you think the economy is in bad shape now just imagine what it would be like if we didn't have banks and car companies. I don't think it was a good time to kiss off a million jobs.

As if the banks and car companies would have just disappeared into thin air. They didn't have any assets, no brand - nothing that would have been bought by more capable companies and reworked to become profitable. Just *poof*. Millions of jobs gone. That's not how companies worked when I was a kid; I guess capitalism has changed.

From your link:
“We’ve got auto companies that for the first time since 2004 all showed an operating profit in the first quarter of this year. It’s adding jobs. And the money that this administration invested — about $60 billion — we believe we’re on the path to recouping all of that. That’s a significant story.
“I’ll let those that sat in the cheap seats a year-and-a-half ago and wanted to walk away” from a milion workers, he continued, “explain to every one of those workers why they made that decision.”
I'm glad the auto companies are showing an operating profit.
Now, somebody please ask Gibbs about the thousands of Gulf Coast jobs that ceased to exist with the imposition of the across-the-board moratorium which does not take into account the inspections done immediately after Deepwater blowout that showed other rigs were operating safely.

re: #95 reine.de.tout
Operating profit by all three domestics? Not exactly.
Ford had an operating profit without any federal involvement.
GM pulled an operating profit, but it's underlying numbers are still putrid. The company is betting the farm on a loss-leader with the Chevy Volt, the economics of which isn't going to make a profit for the company anytime soon. And the name of the game is making profits. If the company can't produce cars at a profit on a consistent basis, then it will again slide into the red in a big way.
Chrysler somehow managed an operating profit as well.
How did those occur? The bankruptcy reorganizations allowed both to shed bad contracts and rejigger their finances, including some parts of awful deals with the unions (including the jobs bank). However, the companies are anything but on solid financial footing.
And the same result could have been had without federal intervention had the companies sought bankruptcy reorganization prior to the federal infusion of funds (the Bush bailouts - which were followed by Obama's own bailouts). Bush didn't want the bankruptcy/reorganizations on his watch, so he pushed the bailout to dump the mess in Obama's lap. Obama doubled down with his own bailout putting taxpayer dollars on the hook.
No - the bailouts didn't save jobs and the Obama Administration didn't save 55,000 jobs as they're contending.
The reorganizations of both companies that enabled them to shed the bad deals did. And all that bad debt is still around - in Old GMCo, which consolidated all the bad debts and liquidated facilities under one toxic entity.
Reorganization could have been done in 2009 without affecting the Treasury and without the federal interference. Heck, GM and Chrysler could have followed Ford's route in 2007-2009 by making substantive and serious changes to their entire corporate operations. Instead, they limped into government's open arms.
So no, I don't buy into the WH line that they saved jobs.

re: #101 lawhawk

I was going by what the story said (the part I quoted), and no, I don't buy that any jobs were "saved", either.
And in fact, I bought a new car in 2009, and bought a Ford product in part because they took no federal money!
I'm more curious about the administration's concern for the auto jobs; and complete lack of concern for (non-union) Gulf-coast jobs.

I'm pissed at GOPer Scott Garrett who voted against this despite some of his constituents being directly affected by 9/11. I'm pissed that the GOP is claiming that this was procedural and ignoring the larger issues involved and that this bill has languished for 8+ years since the attacks. Kerry says he mishandled furor over yacht taxes
[Link: news.yahoo.com...]
"Sen. John Kerry said he always intended to pay taxes in Massachusetts on his $7 million yacht but conceded he mishandled the public furor over his decision to dock the vessel in tax-free Rhode Island.
"I don't think I dealt with it fast enough, effectively enough. There's nobody to blame but myself for that," the Massachusetts Democrat told The Boston Globe for Friday's editions.
Kerry added that he did nothing legally wrong.
Kerry moved to end the controversy this week by saying he would write Massachusetts a check for about $500,000, whether he owed the money or not. He told The Associated Press that he and his wife "have always complied with tax laws." The payment represents $437,500 in one-time sales taxes, plus about $70,000 in annual excise taxes.
The 2004 Democratic presidential nominee had been dogged by charges of tax evasion since the Boston Herald first reported his decision to dock the 76-foot sloop Isabel in Newport, R.I.
..........
The senator told the Globe he and his wife decided in 2006 to buy a new sailboat and signed a contract for the vessel in November 2007, stressing that it was done a time when the economy was better."
Lurching for the truth.....

Palestinian terror watch.
Gazan terrorists fired a grad rocket, which slammed into an Ashkelon apartment building - damaging several floors and several cars parked outside. Eight people were injured.
A rocket fired from the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun exploded in the heart of a populated area in the southern city of Ashkelon on Friday morning. Eight people suffered shock. Two empty floors of an apartment building, several cars and a nearby pavement sustained damage. Many windows were shattered.Police dispatched to the rocket's landing site urged the residents to stay in their homes for fear of additional rockets.
"We heard the siren and ran into the fortified room," says Dudi Ben-Shlush, who lives on the fourth floor of the building hit by the rocket. "We heard the loud explosion only after we came out. The entire building trembled, windows were shattered, and the shutters were damaged.

Here's a surprise:
ADL Comes Out Against Ground Zero Center
Anti-bigotry group sides with people it calls bigots
The Anti-Defamation League has issued a statement opposing the construction of the Islamic community center a couple blocks from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan. (Earlier this week, a community board recommended that the Landmarks Preservation Commission allow the project to go through.) The release goes out of its way to grant Cordoba House’s organizers good intentions and to condemn the bigotry of some who oppose it. So what is the problem? “The controversy which has emerged regarding the building of an Islamic Center at this location,” the ADL argues, “is counterproductive to the healing process.”
It adds:
Proponents of the Islamic Center may have every right to build at this site, and may even have chosen the site to send a positive message about Islam. The bigotry some have expressed in attacking them is unfair, and wrong. But ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right. In our judgment, building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain—unnecessarily—and that is not right.

Here's the full statement from the ADL:
Statement On Islamic Community Center Near Ground Zero
New York, NY, July 28, 2010 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today issued the following statement regarding the proposed Islamic Center near Ground Zero in Manhattan:
We regard freedom of religion as a cornerstone of the American democracy, and that freedom must include the right of all Americans – Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and other faiths – to build community centers and houses of worship.
We categorically reject appeals to bigotry on the basis of religion, and condemn those whose opposition to this proposed Islamic Center is a manifestation of such bigotry.
However, there are understandably strong passions and keen sensitivities surrounding the World Trade Center site. We are ever mindful of the tragedy which befell our nation there, the pain we all still feel – and especially the anguish of the families and friends of those who were killed on September 11, 2001.
The controversy which has emerged regarding the building of an Islamic Center at this location is counterproductive to the healing process. Therefore, under these unique circumstances, we believe the City of New York would be better served if an alternative location could be found.
In recommending that a different location be found for the Islamic Center, we are mindful that some legitimate questions have been raised about who is providing the funding to build it, and what connections, if any, its leaders might have with groups whose ideologies stand in contradiction to our shared values. These questions deserve a response, and we hope those backing the project will be transparent and forthcoming. But regardless of how they respond, the issue at stake is a broader one.
Proponents of the Islamic Center may have every right to build at this site, and may even have chosen the site to send a positive message about Islam. The bigotry some have expressed in attacking them is unfair, and wrong. But ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right. In our judgment, building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain – unnecessarily – and that is not right.

Suspicious incident at US Embassy in Paris - 2 workers exposed to tear gas in suspicious package.
Two men who work for the U.S. Embassy in Paris underwent medical tests after handling a suspicious letter Friday, the embassy said, and Paris police said it appeared they had been exposed to tear gas fumes. Both men were cleared and released after being examined at the Paris hospital Hotel Dieu, Embassy spokesman Paul Patin said. The mailroom employees identified a suspicious letter and the embassy alerted French authorities, he told The Associated Press.
The central laboratory of the Paris police identified the irritant as tear gas, according to a police official who was not authorized to speak to the media. However, Patin said he could not immediately confirm that report.
An embassy employee received a manila envelope sent as registered mail that had no mail inside, but it began emitting fumes after the employee opened it, the official said.

The 2004 Democratic presidential nominee had been dogged by charges of tax evasion since the Boston Herald first reported his decision to dock the 76-foot sloop Isabel in Newport, R.I.
...
The senator told the Globe he and his wife decided in 2006 to buy a new sailboat and signed a contract for the vessel in November 2007, stressing that it was done a time when the economy was better."Lurching for the truth...
It's all because of the mocking sea-chantey I wrote for him.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the ADL talking points in that statement seem very similar to a lot of the concerns that I've heard coming from the "Bigot Brigade." This line "But ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right" sounds as close to some of the chatter coming from the Geller/Spencer crowd as you could imagine.

I disagree with the ADL statement.
First, it's better to iron out the issue of community center construction (w/mosque) now, rather than to keep deferring it.
Second, if this particular project is defeated based upon shallow reasons such as the ADL offers up I expect it will simply embolden the shrill protesters to believe that they have "won" and thus can act the same way from there on in order to defeat any similar project elsewhere.
It appeasement.

Legendary author Anne Rice has announced that she’s quitting Christianity.
The “Interview with a Vampire” author, who wrote a book about her spirituality titled "Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession" in 2008, said Wednesday that she refuses to be “anti-gay,” “anti-feminist," “anti-science” and “anti-Democrat.”
Rice wrote, “For those who care, and I understand if you don't: Today I quit being a Christian ... It's simply impossible for me to ‘belong’ to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.”
Rice then added another post explaining her decision on Thursday:“My faith in Christ is central to my life. My conversion from a pessimistic atheist lost in a world I didn't understand, to an optimistic believer in a universe created and sustained by a loving God is crucial to me," Rice wrote. "But following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than Christianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been or might become.”

Bob Dylan says that's all we are...
/oh wait
Kansas sang "Dust In the Wind". Dylan's was "Idiot Wind", for which the refrain actually could be held to be appropriate for a lot of what we seen spoken on the media these days...
Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess.
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy,
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me.
I can't help it if I'm lucky.
People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts.
Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at,
I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me better than that
Sweet lady.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth,
Blowing down the backroads headin' south.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.
I ran into the fortune-teller, who said beware of lightning that might strike
I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like.
There's a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin' out of a boxcar door,
You didn't know it, you didn't think it could be done, in the final end he won the wars
After losin' every battle.
I woke up on the roadside, daydreamin' 'bout the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are makin' me see stars.
You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies.
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzin' around your eyes,
Blood on your saddle.
Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb,
Blowing through the curtains in your room.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.
It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart.
Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped,
What's good is bad, what's bad is good, you'll find out when you reach the top
You're on the bottom.
I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed, your eyes
don't look into mine.
The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone-faced while the building
burned.
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees, while the springtime
turned Slowly into autumn.
Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull,
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.
I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin' I was somebody else instead.
Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy,
I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory
And all your ragin' glory.
I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free,
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me.
You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above,
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love,
And it makes me feel so sorry.
Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats,
Blowing through the letters that we wrote.
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves,
We're idiots, babe.
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.

They upgraded the 1Q figures slightly, but the 2Q numbers are troublesome since it's showing that the economy isn't producing jobs sufficient to bring down unemployment anytime soon.
The concern is that the economy isn't picking up steam and that the real estate sector isn't picking up the slack.

i'm seeing all sorts of ads recently for the "adult pertussis vaccine", to protect children from the people who most often pass on the whooping cough - parents.
It's not a bad idea, but is it supposed to replace having the kids vaccinated?
Now, I think it just makes more sense to go ahead and have the kids vaccinated just in case at some point they come into contact with someone other than their parents.

Heh :) Correction Jan 2011.
But otherwise, I'm sort of half serious. Sarkozy is making a lot of tough moves lately, if you follow French politics a bit like I do, it's evidently his attempt to gain back some of the support he had going into 2007, and has lost a bit. But, I've been in Paris when the gendarmerie was patrolling Metro stations and various public places because of terrorist activity, and lately, their presence has dropped off a bit.
These kind of recent maneuvers by Sarkozy could certainly open up the country to new activity. Should be interesting.
