The mix of colors in this one is really nice. I was driving on I-10 and had been noticing the cool dark blue color of the sky. Then I came over a hill and saw the incredible bright colors of the sunset reflected in the lower clouds, fading to that deep blue, and bam, there was a rest stop. I happened to have the D90 in the car, so I pulled off the freeway and snapped some photos in the few minutes before the colors went away. Lucky timing.

Magnificent shot. Nikon makes a darn fine camera. And as darthstar said above it's good to see your photography right up top. I may just bailout again later and get after a sunset here tonight. The high wispy clouds might just be good for it.

We were already out all day hunting some good shots and we got very little. I did get a crisp shot of a diamondback rattlesnake at Malibu state park.

I was reading about that. The Adams family is saying they aren't Ansel's but I don't know what's really going on.

I bought a Black Forest coo-coo clock for $13 with the original German paperwork. It's painted, too, which is unusual. An all brown one sold for $250 about 15 years ago new. That was my best find, I think.

I got a $100 Canon camera a few years ago for my birthday but I could never find any good shots, and it probably wouldn't have been able to capture the great amount of detail need for a good shot like this.

And I can't afford a Nikon right now.

I was sitting on my back porch when I was a kid in Napa Valley with the song 'I was born a rambling man' playing in the background and the clouds as far as the eye could see were shaped like little shapes of popcorn.. I have never seen anything like it again my whole life..Just amazing and I didn't have a camera

I must disagree. The camera D_L bought for her brother was only $129. Canon digital, ten megapixels. Regular AAA battery powered and simple.

I took a couple of pictures without the polarizing filter too, but they weren't as dynamic. The polarizer makes the colors more vibrant, even though it does reduce the amount of light somewhat. I compensate for it by slightly increasing the exposure.

Yes you did. I do believe the mind's camera is the best. A regular camera couldn't have captured it the way you saw it and the way your recall now sees it, and to have a photograph of it would never do justice to the memory.

I thought of your Goat Rock story when I was somewhat near your old stomping grounds early last month, but I was mainly in Mendocino. I had a fabulous and memorable time in spite of a sunburn caused by sheer mindlessness, and I hope to get back before another year goes by.

Also, I use RAW images, not compressed JPEGs, for shots like this, because you have much more flexibility in editing. But for this image, I didn't need to adjust anything -- this is right out of the camera.

When we were there we stayed somewhere out of Bend as I remember. I want to go again and stay at the lodge right there at Crater Lake, but you have to make reservations way in advance.

Isn't the blue, the deepest natural blue ever? People often think the photos have been enhanced, but no.

It looks like a very dramatic landscape up top that mountain. Crater Lake is one of those places on my list of locations I'd like to visit but doubt I'll ever have the opportunity. It's been a favorite of landscape photographers for quite a while.

I like to use the raw + jpeg feature. Really the jpegs are used as my "thumbnails" and I work from the raw files. Adding the jpegs only reduces the card capacity a little.

I know of landscape photographers, who for the very reason you cite above, avoid the better known places.

One of the better (IMO) local landscape photographers (who is an "amateur" but his photos are shown around town) visits the Grand Canyon. Now, that place has been photographed a zillion times, but it is so large that the number of different compositions is astronomical, so it is possible to find something unique.

OTOH, there are places like, say, the Statue of Liberty that probably allows for no novel photographs, simply because it has all been done before.

Which I think gets at an important point - why photograph? I know for myself that the images I treasure the most now are those with people (or places) in them that have been important to me.

Cool! A photography thread. I've been taking pictures since I was 21, I apprenticed under a graphic artist who taught me composition and how to develop B&W film. He also gave me my first camera, a Pentax K 1000. Totally basic and all manual and it still works great. Nowadays I use a Kodak Easyshare for digital shots. I got it for just under $300 a couple of years ago. I'll see what I can find and post a link.

I'd love to go back to the Grand Canyon and shoot a picture of the suspension footbridge at the bottom. The last time I was there it was lit only by the moon, and I had no camera, but it was a nice memory at the end of a long walk.

This one I took a number of years ago with my manual K1000. This is the lake down the street from where I grew up and almost drowned in as a little kid. And these are my two favorite Statue of Liberty shots. The key is to try to have your camera with you as much as possible. I've had more than a few shots before my eyes but no camera, and that just sucks.

Here's a nice quick pro tip that saves time over the channel mixer, while still getting excellent results:

1.) Create and stack two Hue / Saturation adjustment layers above the layer to be converted into B/W.

2.) The top H/S layer should be in color blending mode with saturation set at -100 (full desaturation).

3.) The lower H/S layer should be in normal blending mode, with zero (normal) saturation and zero lightness adjustment.

=Now you can use the hue slider on the lower H/S adjustment layer to apply all possible color filters in one smooth motion.

I found a whole bunch of sites that have recordings of old shows and old scripts. I love listening to them.

Some of those great old shows were incredibly creative and well written.

I love that because it was radio they had to be more creative about painting a picture through sound effects. And yet the image that was evoked was from your own imagination. Kids don't have that anymore I'm afraid.

I think if parents read to their kids, that helps. I read to the Peanut as often as he asks. Right now we're reading Harry Potter. We read the D'Aulaire book of Greek Myths prior to reading Percy Jackson so he could catch all the references.

It's not true at all. England has tens of thousands of stunning Indian and Jamaican women, gorgeous ladies everywhere you look.

That's wonderful that you do that. My mother read me the Winnie the Pooh books when I was little and we always had poetry in the house as well as various fairytale collections. It helped foster my own creativity tremendously. It didn't hurt that both of my parents were very literate and creative as well, even though they split up, I still was able to gain from their own artistic abilities.
