Creationists in Louisiana Eager to Litigate for Jesus

Wingnuts • Views: 2,496

In Louisiana, where Republican governor Bobby Jindal signed into law a stealth creationist bill (disguised as “academic freedom”) crafted by the Discovery Institute, religious fanatics are getting eager to start pushing the envelope. The Advocate has a report on the Livingston Parish School Board, where the creationists are going to have to wait another year: Livingston School Board: No creationism this year.

Why are they waiting? What could be more important than foisting off Dark Ages superstition on the impressionable young minds of other people’s children, in the name of “academic freedom?”

The fact that they’ll get sued instantly.

LIVINGSTON — The Livingston Parish School Board won’t try to include the teaching of creationism in this year’s curriculum, but has asked the School Board staff to look at the issue for possible future action, board officials said.

A decision to teach creationism could become expensive for the parish school system, said Marjorie Esman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

“If they were to do it, they could anticipate that any litigation would result in them not only losing, but having to pay enormous legal fees,” she said. “They would be wasting a huge amount of taxpayer money on a battle they can’t win.”

Nonetheless, the creationists are getting antsy. They’re ready to litigate for Jesus.

David Tate, the School Board member who brought up the matter at the board’s last meeting, said he would rather not see litigation, but added that the board gets sued on other matters.

“We don’t want litigation, but why not take a stand for Jesus and risk litigation,” Tate said.

I didn’t realize Jesus was part of the Christian creation myth. I thought he came along in later chapters of the book.

Why not?

Because you look foolish trying to do what has clearly been shown to be unconstitutional in several court cases.

Oh, and by dragging “Jesus” into you little power-play you’re making that Biblical character look like a fool too. Probably not a good idea.

It’s not the “creation” they’re interested in teaching. It’s the life of Christ and the crucifixion and resurrection they want to teach, obviously.

If they are going to teach creationism, which version will they elect to teach?

Even among those who espouse creationism, there are many different theories. If they teach “New Earth” creationism, the “Old Earth” creationists will say they aren’t representing their beliefs.

Then do we start teaching other creationist theories? Personally, I think we aren’t really doing our children justice until they learn the earth was formed by a giant cow licking ice.

Back when I was a high school English teacher, I taught creation mythology as part of the International Baccalaureate program for Freshmen. We studied the Enuma Elish, Aborigine creation mythology, Native American creation mythology, Eskimo creation myth, African creation myth, and more. Students who wanted to write a paper comparing the different creation myths to the one in the book of Genesis were welcome to do so. Bright kids. Got some great essays from them on this.

I’m guessing these other myths wouldn’t be part of the Louisiana curriculum.

They don’t care if it has been shown multiple times that the state can’t sanction sectarian beliefs.

Creationism makes no sense. Never has, never will, at least to me.

I just don’t get why it’s such a threat to these people if their kids learn about the scientific truth of evolution. Is their faith really that weak that learning legitimate science would cause it to collapse like a house of cards?

They aren’t saying how, but they got that all figured out. From the link at the top:

Martin said that a number of years ago when the issue came up, he voted against teaching creationism, but not because he didn’t want it to be taught.

He said he was concerned about whether teachers would try to introduce their own religious beliefs.

“I was worried about the curriculum,” Martin said. “I was worried about how it was going to be taught.”

How the subject would be taught has been refined since then, he said.

No more on the subject. I’d like to see this “refinement.”

Good point, I would not object to that sort of study. My dad told me all about the Greek gods when I was little, lots of good literature there. You could call it “Creation studies” and cover the dozens of creation stories, some pretty interesting ones in there too.

The Aborigine creation myth was especially interesting for the kids…creators with enormous genitalia that dragged behind them as they crossed the Outback, the moisture from the woman bringing life to the land, etc…lots of “oohs!” and “whoas!” from the kids as they read…”High school is way different from middle school!”

Well… well… well… I have a really strange schedule this week… got a 6-10 tonight, off tomorrow, 3:00-7:00 on Weds., a 9:15am-5:45pm DAY SHIFT (I never get a day shift), off Fri. and Sat. something like 4-8… strange scattered schedule.

But, I did sign up for a private gym up here in the hills today (no community centers around here, miss the 75 dollar a year fee). Lucky though, Krogers partners with this gym, so the dues is only 39 dollars a month, for a year, the place is open 24 hours a day.

Oh my…

GOP Rep. Bachmann of Minnesota forms national PAC

Republican U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is starting a national fundraising committee to help fellow conservatives running for office.

The chairwoman of the House Tea Party Caucus filed paperwork Friday to form a political action committee called “Many Individual Conservatives Helping Elect Leaders Everywhere.” The acronym is MICHELEPAC.

The committee hasn’t reported raising any money yet.
Bachmann is one of the top fundraisers in Congress. She’s collected more than $4.5 million this election cycle as she seeks a third term in Minnesota’s 6th District.

Bachmann has campaigned for GOP candidates in states including New York and California. She missed an appearance in St. Louis, Mo., Saturday after being hospitalized briefly Friday for an undisclosed illness.

Groan.

93 Randall Gross  Mon, Aug 2, 2010 4:38:53pm

Meanwhile, at the other end of the “let’s get crazy with our kids’ schools” spectrum…

[Link: www.sacbee.com…]
While enrollment climbs, the district faces a lawsuit this summer from a Northern California group that claims the Waldorf system cannot be separated from founder Rudolf Steiner’s religious philosophy, making public Waldorf schools ineligible to receive taxpayer dollars.

The People for Legal and Nonsectarian Schools filed the lawsuit in 1998, and after several appeals, a trial is set for Aug. 31 in Sacramento federal court.

“We are excited to finally make it to court,” said Debra Snell, president of PLANS. “These schools are spreading like wildfire. It’s a nationwide concern.”

Scrap ‘racist’ coin: museum

ROMANIA’S central bank has issued a special coin commemorating a prime minister and religious leader who stripped Jews of their citizenship before World War II. The move prompted protest on Monday from Romanian Jews as well as a director at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Radu Ioanid, who runs the museum’s international archives, said he was ‘shocked’ by the bank’s decision to mint the coin depicting late Patriarch Miron Cristea, who led the Romanian Orthodox Church from 1925 to 1939 and was prime minister from 1938-1939.

The patriarch was responsible for revising the citizenship law, stripping about 225,000 Jews - or 37 per cent of the Jewish population - of their Romanian citizenship, Mr Ioanid said.

Eager to litigate for Jesus. Funny, but the Pope - you know - the guy who is the Vicar of Jesus, thinks the creationist-evolution debate is absurd because faith can coexist with science.

No matter how much the creationists try to push their agendas into the classroom they’re still going to be wrong - because they do not have any science to back their position one iota. That’s in comparison to evolution, which has significant science supporting it in multiple disciplines (archeology, anthropology, biology, genetics, etc.)

why yes I think it is… so OK we are looking at a rising market and a hard date of 1/1/2011 when taxes rise…it really does not take a crystal ball to see what is unfolding… I think we can hit 11000 before the crash but knowing when the crash is coming is a great help. trust me everyone who plays will dump before the tax hikes come 11000 or no.

Why? It won’t affect folks who hold for the long term. Don’t have to pay taxes if you don’t realize the gains. Just collected the dividends. There might be some selling, but at the end of the day it’s all about the economy. The consumer is still pretty shell shocked, and that’s 2/3 of the economy.

Good point, I would not object to that sort of study. My dad told me all about the Greek gods when I was little, lots of good literature there. You could call it “Creation studies” and cover the dozens of creation stories, some pretty interesting ones in there too.

At the Catholic high school I was teaching at the last couple of years, we studied Greek myths in English at the same time the kids were doing Genesis in religion class. Lots of good crossover lessons.

I find women with German accents irritatingly adorable.

Doesn’t work for me in men, for some reason.

Once had to take a course on Jewish philosophy, and I probably would have died of boredom, except the instructor was adorable, and had a cute German accent.

Well, the literal truth of many parts of the Bible is on a lower level on the believability scale than that a father would eat his own children.

Lawyer/Heaven joke…

Lawyer shows up in Heaven. Goes right to St. Peter. “I can’t possibly be dead! I’m only 43 years old, in the prime of my life!”
St. Peter checks the book, “43? Says here you are 94.” He replies.
“No! I’m only 43!”, shouts the lawyer.
St. Peter looks again, says… “Oh goodness. We counted billable hours.’

Engineer dies and gets sent to Hell by mistake. While he’s there, he fixes the plumbing, turns down the heat, and generally makes life much more pleasant for the denizens. Meanwhile, God finds out out about the mistake, and calls Satan to get the engineer back.

Satan: “Nah, I think we’ll keep him”.

God: “You can’t do that! I’ll…I’ll….sue!”

Satan: “Oh, yeah? Who do you think has all the lawyers?”

The Church is good about science these days. This does not influence wild-eyed American Evangelical Protestants in the slightest.

Lawyer/Hell joke…

Abe Lincoln visited a tavern while riding around as a circuit lawyer. It was cold and snowing outside, but all the other lawyers were crowded around the stove and he couldn’t find a place to get warm.

They said, “Hey Abe, you look like you’ve been to Hell and back.”

“I have,” he said.

“What’s it like there?” they asked.

“Just like here,” Abe said. “All the lawyers closest to the fire.”

To renew a discussion from the last thread:

Malmo, or Malmö, or Malmø, Sweden, is seeing its Jewish population begin to flee for other parts of the world (Israel - who needs it?) because of an alarming increase in Islamofascist attacks - supported or tolerated by the tolerant Swedes - against Jewish institutions and people.

Says the august mayor of that town (note for sticklers - this is an indirect quote):

In plain text: if you are a Jew and Israel does something that people disagree with, too bad, so sad, get fucked.

How would we react if - God forfend - Pamz “Bloodlust” Geller said that the recent upswing in anti-Muslim incidents in America is just a sad but understandable consequence of Saudi Arabian policy in the Magic Kingdom?

Not so positively, I would aver.

I don’t think Pam would say the upswing is sad. And she would have to put down her half-brick to take the microphone.

Year before last, I did have a kid ask me if I thought the Greek gods were ‘real’.

Another kid, when they had to do a project on a non-classical myth, asked if it was OK to do the Ramayana, because it’s part of a still-extant religion, and she wasn’t sure if she would insult her Hindu friends by describing it as a ‘myth’. That was a really interesting discussion.

What I told her was that all mythology comes out of someone’s religion, and that as long as she was respectful, she could use a story from a faith still being practiced. We talked about how we’d used Biblical stories in class to compare to Greek myths.

The ‘do you believe in the Greek gods’ one was actually harder to answer well for ninth-graders.

I know it’s a joke, dude. So is the “kill all the lawyers” bit.

My father, an attorney all his life, has the most extensive collection of books of lawyer jokes I have ever seen. (There are alot of them.) It’s a fun profession to mock, even for those in it. You could not begin a lawyer joke in front of my dad that he couldn’t finish from memory.

And, any honest lawyer will admit, there are many, many completely irredeemable assholes in that profession. There are also some of the most noble people I have ever had the pleasure to have met. Some build empires, and some work for peanuts for people who don’t have anything to pay.

It’s a fascinating profession.

End random pontification.

Creationism makes no sense. Never has, never will, at least to me.

I just don’t get why it’s such a threat to these people if their kids learn about the scientific truth of evolution. Is their faith really that weak that learning legitimate science would cause it to collapse like a house of cards?

In a word, yes.

Their belief system absolutely depends on a very specific interpretation of the Bible. There had to be an original sin by ONE man, Adam, so Jesus, the New Man, could redeem humankind. No fiddle-faddling around saying Adam just represents humankind as a whole. That isn’t God’s plan of salvation, according to them. They have it completely figured out, God’s entire salvation plan and purpose. Any evidence that appears to suggest otherwise is a threat to their very identity.

David Tate, the School Board member who brought up the matter at the board’s last meeting, said he would rather not see litigation, but added that the board gets sued on other matters.

“We don’t want litigation, but why not take a stand for Jesus and risk litigation,” Tate said.

Why not?

(a) Render unto Caesar etc.

(b) You’ll lose.

(c) You’ll look foolish.

(d) It’s not “taking a stand for Jesus”. The book of Genesis is not in the New Testament.

(e) You’re not supposed to take a stand against the truth. You could look this up, it’s in your book.

(f) That book is not the only work of God. The Universe itself, including all those fossils carved in stone, all that light from galaxies billions of light years distant, is another. You call all that evidence lies, you’re calling the author of that evidence a liar. Big talk from a big mouth is what I call it. Or, in short, Pride.

The rich and the “experts” forecast gloom and doom so the unwary, the stupid, and the nervous will sell. Then the gloom-and-doomers buy and get some nice gains when the market rebounds.

Personally, now that I have the money to invest again, I’m back in the market. I’ve bought mainly companies with good earnings and whose operations and products I understand. Nothing is over 10% of my portfolio and only about 5 stocks are each over 5% of it. About a third of my investment money is in mutual funds, so I may benefit if smarter people than myself make the right picks. Not much “market timing”, except that when P & G came out with lower-than-expected earnings yesterday and the stock fell over two points, I couldn’t resist and bought more.

The folks in the top brackets will always complain about their taxes. So will everyone else, even those who aren’t paying any state or federal taxes. As an accountant, I make the same offer every year to my better-off clients—“Let’s trade incomes, and I’ll gladly pay the taxes.” No one has ever taken me up on the offer.
