Glenn Beck: Obama = Lucifer (w/ Flames)

Wingnuts • Views: 6,080

The last time Glenn Beck played the Satan card he called President Obama a “Satan worshipper.”

Where can he go after that? Well, in Beck’s loonyverse, our President has now graduated from mere worshipper to the Prince of Darkness himself: Yes, Beck did just compare President Obama to Lucifer.

Good grief. I don’t watch Beck’s show regularly, because he evokes my gag reflex. So I was struck by how crazy he’s gotten since the last time I saw him rant. He seems to be carrying on a conversation/argument with three or four inner voices in this segment.

If only Obama really was Satan he’d spare the world of Fox news, Glenn Beck, and all the other wingnut enlightenment. Sadly, he is not Satan.

Wow Glenn Beck is accusing Obama of putting forward ideas that are proven failures….

Normally we’d have to go to a movie theater to see projection this obvious!

I thought this train wreck of a show would implode. I was wrong. The wilder he gets the more tame his opposition (if any) at the network gets. How is his commercial time selling? I heard he lost most of them. Who advertises on his show?

What you fail to understand, Charles, is that Obama was always Lucifer. Beck was only trying to point out how much he worships himself, that’s all.

Jeebus! If Glenn didn’t have a t.v. show, if he was doing this on the street corner, he’d be thrown in the loony bin. What is it about the idiot-box that somehow conveys legitimacy to this kind of spastic insanity?

I say dump Beck, Springer, Reality TV, etc., and raise Alfred Hitchcock from the dead so we can have some watchable television again.

OT. Here’s a smart sane conservative politician speaking openly in favor of gay rights. Of course he’s not an American.

I know there is one other subject that the gay community is particularly interested in: marriage. As someone who believes in commitment, in marriage and in civil partnerships, my view is that if religious organisations want to have civil partnerships registered at their places of worship that should be able to happen….as we consider what the next steps are for civil partnerships and how we enable religious organisations to register same-sex relationships on their premises if they wish to do so. I think this is an important step forward and we will help to make it happen…I am proud that there are now more openly gay MPs in the Conservative Party than any other party….This is a country where people can be proud of who they are – and quite right too.

And this isn’t just any conservative politician. It’s the freaking Prime Minister of the UK. Hard to imagine any prominent Republican speaking this way…now. But they will eventually. Like Laura Bush said, “It’s a generational issue.” As such, time is not on the side of the homophobes.

re: #91 Killgore Trout

Conservatism has become a joke.

I’ve been thinking about this recently. I don’t know of a time in American history when the self-declared “conservatives” (in the public sphere) ever did, really, play a positive role for any great length of time.

That might sound a bit condemnatory, but I keep thinking of how people like Jefferson really were not conservatives. And in the early 19th century the expansionist US was just that - highly expansionist and opportunistic. By the time of the middle of that century the “conservatives” were fighting those radicals who wanted to outlaw slavery, among other things. And it goes on, to those who opposed TR as he was trying to be reformist, through Hoover, who though being a decent enough guy really didn’t understand what he had to do partly because he was too conservative in thought, through the cold war JBS/McCarthy era, through the modern “conservatism” which is largely based on reactionary theocratic thinking.

Some might accuse me of looking at history with biased lenses - yes, of course I have my own biases, like everyone. Yet I maintain that this nation has always been a crucible for change and new ideas, something which “conservatism” by its nature wants to limit. The great thrust of the American experience has been about progress.

I am convinced that people (in the US and outside) think of the US as being “conservative” (the term “center-right” is often applied) for one important reason: Americans on the whole are more religious than in other first world nations.

It is this religiosity, not political theory or economic theory, that defines why the US is thought of as “conservative.”f

If that is indeed the case, then your assertion about conservatives is really a condemnation of the attempt to maintain ancient religious thought and practices way beyond any possible era in which they were actually useful.

Strangely though it might seem to some people here, I still consider myself to be somewhat “conservative” in outlook. I really do think the United States of America was a good idea, the Constitution was a good idea, and I’d like to see both of them continue into the future.

It’s just that I accept that society has changed quite a bit in 235 years, something about which Glenn Beck’s audience is in deep denial.

That is why I think we really do need to challenge the “rugged individualism” doctrine - we are no longer pioneers on the frontier, but people who live in cities, some of which have millions of inhabitants.

Thank you.

It’s all part of the melange of ideas running through my head as I sort through what I see around me, in my society, versus what I hear other people saying/writing.

Human nature being what it is, we people tend to not tell ourselves the truth, and I think we do that in aggregate also. Indeed, we like it when people lie to us.

Thus the President goes to functions like the opening of new highways and auto plants… while he knows all along that ideas behind his administrations energy policies is to try and get people off their addiction to the automobile. The Keynesian need to spend money on projects conflicts with the science and engineering of what is needed to adapt to the future, but this sort of collective cognitive dissonance is hardly ever discussed by our leaders, in public anyway.

So many Americans are avoiding a similar discussion about their own beliefs, especially the need to modernize their religion and all that follows from that.

Disneyworld, Orlando. We just got back last week. Florida residents get one park for $50, but you have to buy a 3 day pass, i.e. spend $150. Otherwise it’s $82 for a day pass. But we have more parks than California. There’s a Magic Kingdom, a water park, Downtown Disney, MGM/Universal, Epcot. Each counts as one park.

Was it like a disco? We didn’t get there at all this trip. The last time I was there was in 93. This time, we took the kids out early, but by the time the afternoon rolled around, it was just too blazing hot. So we’d go back and nap, then take the kids to the pool, then they were done. Here’s a test.

If someone were to write the following paragraph, what first things, responses, come to mind?:

How the country class and ruling class might clash on each item of their contrasting agendas is beyond my scope. Suffice it to say that the ruling class’s greatest difficulty — aside from being outnumbered — will be to argue, against the grain of reality, that the revolution it continues to press upon America is sustainable. For its part, the country class’s greatest difficulty will be to enable a revolution to take place without imposing it. America has been imposed on enough.

Who (person or people) would write such things?

OT: Have you seen the latest sad twist of the girl that fled her Muslim family claiming she needed protection from them because she converted to Christianity? The one that saw all the Christian wing-nuts all up in arms? It turns out this poor girl has been diagnosed with uterine cancer and, though just 17, has asked a court to deny her (birth) parents wishes that she get the medical care the doctors recommend because - get this - she went to a faith healing. The court has said she’s old enough to make her own decisions. So sad, not only are these wing-nuts screwing up her life, they may be killing her:

[Link: www.dispatch.com…]

She’s turning eighteen next week. This will be out of her parents’ hands then.

IIRC, they came to the US in the first place so their child could have proper medical treatment for a problem she had as a little girl.

This is heartbreaking.

These assholes will proclaim her as some kind of martyr.

This paragraph:

How the country class and ruling class might clash on each item of their contrasting agendas is beyond my scope. Suffice it to say that the ruling class’s greatest difficulty — aside from being outnumbered — will be to argue, against the grain of reality, that the revolution it continues to press upon America is sustainable. For its part, the country class’s greatest difficulty will be to enable a revolution to take place without imposing it. America has been imposed on enough.

… is the concluding paragraph of an essay written by Angelo M. Codevilla published at American Spectator.

It is being pushed hard by Gary North, who has promoted Codevilla for some time, and by Lew Rockwell and by Rush Limbaugh.

This is where the reactionary, tea partying self-declared “conservatives” are today - into revolution and class struggle.

Seem strange?

It ought to, until we realize that the likes of North, Rockwell, Limbaugh etc. really are provocateurs for angst and unhappiness. They do what they do to make people angry, for when people are angry they become more manipulatable - strong emotions keep people from being as rational as they could otherwise be (and this is the basis for a great deal of modern advertising.)

These hard-rightists - reactionaries - use the class struggle and revolutionary language to play on the envy of what Codevilla calls the “country class”.

Envy is a strong emotion and it can be used to generate anger and hatred.

The despicable Rockwell and his friends will always put themselves as the moral and intellectual guides of this “country class”, which makes it all the more ironic. They are not common people, but rather (wealthy) elitists in their own way.

This gets back to our discussion of “conservatives” from earlier in the thread. I find it ironic (and slightly scary) that so many leaders of self-declared conservatives really are rather extreme reactionaries.

And if Crazy Pam Gellar wanted to do some good for once in her life, she’d urge Berry to seek proper treatment. She won’t do that of course. Geller is a wingnut. She’s a kook. I wouldn’t say she’s a holy roller though, she’s in this not to be pro-Christian but, rather, to be anti-Islam (as I read it). I might have painted with the wrong word but I’m certainly open to a more semantically correct option…

I was just reading the website that bears her name. She’s in the middle of a deportation issue to Sri Lanka. As I understand it, as long as she’s under 18, she can petition for legal status through her parents. When she turns 18 (which is in a few weeks now I take it) she’s regarded as an illegal alien and will be deported unless she’s granted some kind of special status. Her parents aren’t being cooperative (so says her website) to let her become a legal resident before age 18.

It is sometimes referred to as “Q”, but I’ve not read much of late about this stuff.

I know it was also known as “Q.” Mark is probably the earliest source material, with additional foundational material from “Q”. Paul had nothing to do with it. For a matter of fact, Paul spent most of his time reinterpreting a lot of it to fit his Hellenistic leaning.

re: #339 Walter L. Newton

Paul had nothing to do with it. For a matter of fact, Paul spent most of his time reinterpreting a lot of it to fit his Hellenistic leaning.

Yes, that was often held by earlier Biblical scholars. But I’ve been under the impression that in later years, even today, that the influence of Paul - or at least of his followers, like Luke - played a larger roll in the compilation and distribution of what became known as the Gospels.

The Gospels themselves are written in Greek, though obviously the Jews in Israel at the time did not use that language (as their first language.) Thus the Gospels were written for consumption by the Greek speaking world, and it is in those areas (Asia Minor and the NE Med) where Paul and his followers preached.

There are scraps of early (2nd century) Gospel copies, found in of all places Egyptian waste dumps of the time! So these Greek Gospels got wide circulation even by that time.

Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve not kept up on this topic, though from time to time over the years I’ve read bits here and there and find it interesting.

These sort of topics are threatening to fundamentalists though, and I suspect that their fears of evolution etc. really stem from their fear of knowing more about the Bible’s own history.

I don’t get the state issue really. I don’t understand how you can be married in one state and not in the union. Certainly if I get hurt in Nebraska, my husband can speak for me. If I’m gay and married in California, I’m assuming my spouse cannot make my medical decisions in another state as we wouldn’t be regarded as marrieds.

461 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Wed, Aug 4, 2010 8:55:33pm
The rival to Senator Windrip in public reverence was a political titan who seemed to have no itch for office—the Reverend Paul Peter Prang, of Persepolis, Indiana, Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a man perhaps ten years older than Windrip. His weekly radio address, at 2 P.M. every Saturday, was to millions the very oracle of God. So supernatural was this voice from the air that for it men delayed their golf, and women even postponed their Saturday afternoon contract bridge.

It was Father Charles Coughlin, of Detroit, who had first thought out the device of freeing himself from any censorship of his political sermons on the Mount by “buying his own time on the air”—it being only in the twentieth century that mankind has been able to buy Time as it buys soap and gasoline. This invention was almost equal, in its effect on all American life and thought, to Henry Ford’s early conception of selling cars cheap to millions of people, instead of selling a few as luxuries.

But to the pioneer Father Coughlin, Bishop Paul Peter Prang was as the Ford V-8 to the Model A.

Prang was more sentimental than Coughlin; he shouted more; he agonized more; he reviled more enemies by name, and rather scandalously; he told more funny stories, and ever so many more tragic stories about the repentant deathbeds of bankers, atheists, and Communists. His voice was more nasally native, and he was pure Middle West, with a New England Protestant Scotch-English ancestry, where Coughlin was always a little suspect, in the Sears-Roebuck regions, as a Roman Catholic with an agreeable Irish accent.

No man in history has ever had such an audience as Bishop Prang, nor so much apparent power. When he demanded that his auditors telegraph their congressmen to vote on a bill as he, Prang, ex cathedra and alone, without any college of cardinals, had been inspired to believe they ought to vote, then fifty thousand people would telephone, or drive through back-hill mud, to the nearest telegraph office and in His name give their commands to the government. Thus, by the magic of electricity, Prang made the position of any king in history look a little absurd and tinseled.

To millions of League members he sent mimeographed letters with facsimile signature, and with the salutation so craftily typed in that they rejoiced in a personal greeting from the Founder.

Depends. What if the other state has civil unions? Whatever parts of the “marriage” contract some pair have entered into in CA, or WI, or wherever, that have a valid counterpart in the other state, I would expect those parts to count in the other state.

I just finished watching Maddow this evening. I was surprised and disappointed to learn she did not know what a “Christian Re-constructionist” was.

The conversation was in reference to Sharron Engels. I have heard that she, Engels, is so inclined, probably here, but I have also seen that she is just a good old fashioned southern Baptist.

Maybe there is a distinction, I’m no expert, but I thought Maddow was an expert on everything, what with a research staff and all….

The Bucs won the Super Bowl scoring more points on defense then they did on offense. Heh.

Have you seen the stories Channel 8 is doing now on the members of that team? Boohoo, he has bad knees and had to retire from professional football at 37, he invested the millions he was paid badly too, so now he is broke…

Team member after team member, it seems like they are trying to create an “ex-buccaneers” charity or something. All they keep doing is showing the players who are now in deep financial straights due to their own poor decisions, nothing at all about the team members who are still doing fine.

Oh well channel 8 is kinda “fox news light…”

All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens…

I also like this part, since it captures my feeling exactly:

So there is reason not to relish the new project. But the rights guaranteed by the Constitution do not belong only to nice people. And whatever we may wonder about the mosque promoters, we should also remember the mosque’s users: the thousands of Muslims who work in lower Manhattan, every single one of whom is as entitled to pray as any member of Marble Presbyterian or Temple Emanu-el.

Then the evening rains came, the ones that always drive the snails up onto the sidewalk…

Now I have at least 20 snails clustered around the top rim of the can, plus the others on the ground who are too busy doing the snail mating thing to bother. Not only did I not know that snails like chicken I had no idea that it was their version of an aphrodisiac…

I’ll probably be getting a letter from the condo board about this, something about degenerate activities or something…

:) Shaun of the Dead is lots of fun.

28 Days does a pretty good job of being scary during the first half or so. The characters are great — for once, I was actually rooting for all of them (that scene with the little girl’s father is pretty despairing). The end of the movie is darkly comical, though. All hell breaking loose, a rogue zombie in the compound, the mirror scene, etc.

I say this a bit reticently, but 28 Days is probably the best “biological zombie” movie ever made. The progression of the outbreak is fairly realistic too (why is it that there are so few movies where the zombies actually starve to death?).

The thing is that Obama has taken no anti-gun actions, while Clinton did take a major such action with his crime bill. Given that lack of action, and the knowledge that the political considerations Obama faces preclude any such actions in his first term coupled with the two recent Supreme Court rulings affirming an individual right to bear arms, the threat of a gun-grab is clearly non-existent.

I think you’re overdoing it, Charles, and it’s unfair. He did not call Obama “Satan”. He said that Obama’s ideas are not knew, and proved it by citing Marx and the Old Testament.

Honestly, Charles, I have no idea how anybody sits through the GB show on TV or radio. I made it just past the 20 second mark before I had to stop viewing. I can’t even watch it as comedy anymore, because he is so self-important. And I have the distinct displeasure of knowing people who accept his underlying analysis of politics and policy. A sure sign that political life in the U.S. is near a tipping point of some kind.

After reviewing your other comments, it’s no surprise to find you making excuses for this garbage. You’re also an anti-gay bigot:

And on top of that, you were previously banned under another name. Get lost.

Did Saul Alinsky really dedicate ‘Rules for Radicals’ to Lucifer,
or is that a fabrication by Beck ?
Will anybody with this particular volume please confirm or deny this claim.
